School: (708) 758-5252 Absentee Line: (708) 757-2115 Ms. Jill Larson, Principal

A Message From The Principal

Ms. Jill Larson Let me first begin by saying Happy New Year! I hope that 2020 is prosperous for you and your family. If you are like me, you made some resolutions or goals for the New Year. As a school we have goals that we constantly strive to attain. Based on what the State of Illinois says, it would be easy to believe that our only goal is that our PARCC scores improve, but that simply isn’t the case. We also want to equip students to be lifelong learners, to ask questions, and to find amazement in the world around them. We want our students to be excellent citizens and to look for opportunities to help others. We want our students to have a chance to laugh and enjoy their Jr. high years. None of these are measured on a test, but they all count. As this New Year begins, we invite you again to work alongside us on behalf of our students to help meet these goals. Let’s look for opportunities to partner together in educating our students. Let’s make this the best school that we can be… TOGETHER! With the start of the new year upon us, it is a great time to review some important reminders regarding some of our procedures at Brookwood Jr. High School: •

Update your contact information with office personnel as needed. It is important that we have current information in case we need to contact you for an emergency;

Check on your students’ grades. Students have been working really hard and the quarter will be ending on January 30th;

Please try to call when your child is absent or will be late to school. We are trying to promote 100% student attendance, so please try to ensure your child comes to school and is on time each and every day!;

Please make sure your child is reading at least 20 minutes daily;

Please stay involved! Please join my ClassDojo, we have many activities and we hope our families get involved and stay connected. (To join call the school at (708) 758-5252 and let the secretary know you want to sign up, all you need to provide is your cell phone number or email).

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school office at (708) 758-5252 or e-mail me at jlarson@brookwood167.org. These are just a few items that may seem small, but really play an important part of our school running smoothly and creating less stress on children and parents. Thank you for your continued support!

GET INVOLVED!

Parents, Please check your child’s homework and planner everyday!

CONFLICT RESOLUTION TRAINING... Conflict Resolution Training for all 7th Graders! Research shows that when conflict occurs in middle school environments, students affected often lack the developmental maturity and interpersonal skills necessary to ensure healthy outcomes without adult guidance. Our hope that once trained, students will have the needed skills to help resolve any conflicts they might encounter throughout life.

HOLIDAY GIFT GIVING ACTIVITIES WAS A HUGE SUCCESS! On Friday, December 20th, students participated in various holiday gift giving activities. We wanted students to learn about the true meaning of the season by emphasizing the giving over the getting. Getting caught up in the commercialism of the holidays is easy. Is is important that we share that giving unselfishly can generate good feelings students will carry with them for a lifetime! In the classroom, students learned about the importance of giving instead of receiving and the unselfish concern for the well-being of others. When we give without expecting anything in return, we are improving our psychological health. Students enjoyed hot cocoa and listened to holiday music while they decorated ornaments and cookies to give away as gifts for family and friends. Every student also received an individual gift from the school! EVERYONE HAD A GREAT TIME!

By completing the survey, your child will be able to participate in a pizza party at school! This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of Brookwood Jr. High School. As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of our school. The survey gathers data related to five (5) indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five (5) indicators that affect and predict school success are: •

Effective Leaders

Collaborative Teachers

Involved Families

Supportive Environments

Ambitious Instruction

Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide improvement.
