A Message From The Principal
Ms. Jill Larson Dear Brookwood Jr. High School Families, It is hard to believe we are in the month of May already. Please know that during these times, there is no expectation of perfect. We are an extremely strong team and are here to support one another, our students and families. Our goal is to keep all students engaged and learning. If your child needs an electronic device, or if you know of any other student that needs a device, please contact me using one of the ways listed below. Try to use this time to continue extending learning, teaching life lessons, and enjoying this unique time with your family. Take time to have fun together and to show your love for one another. That is what our kids will remember for a lifetime! We will get through this. Again, if you need anything at all, please do not hesitate to reach out. Please trust that the teachers’ goal is to provide meaningful, yet not overwhelming, activities and lessons for our students. We all miss being together in our learning environment and cannot wait until we are all back together in person again. It has been great to “see” the kids engaging in Reading, Math, Science, Social Studies, Art, Music Spanish, Band and Physical Fitness activities. On May 1st, student report cards were mailed home for 3rd quarter. We are scheduling our Personal Belongings Pick Up during the week of May 18th for 7th graders and the week of May 25th for 8th graders. I will be posting a schedule this week on ClassDojo so please ensure you read all postings. Our grab and go meals for all students under the age of 18 is every Tuesday & Thursday at Brookwood Middle school from 9:30a.m. - 11:00 a.m. If you know of someone who needs food, please contact me and we can assist the family. We hope you and your family are keeping safe and connected, even in these times of social distancing. As always, please reach out to your child’s teachers for any questions/concerns. If your child needs an electronic device, or if you have any questions or concerns, I can be reached at the school number (708) 758-5252, by email jlarson@brookwood167.org or by cell phone (708) 362-0115.
STAY SAFE AND BE WELL, #BROOKWOODSTRONG 2
“Aim for success, not perfection. Never give up your right to be wrong, because then you will lose the ability to learn new things and move forward with your life. Remember that fear always lurks behind perfectionism.” --David M. Burns

SOCIAL EMOTIONAL WELLNESS
12
Brookwood Junior High School
Experts agree that teaching kids to be emotionally “smart” can help them in school and with friendships and make them less prone to violence. The good news? Parents can use simple strategies to teach children important emotional skills: identifying their feelings, handling emotions and having empathy for others. Below are some tips on how to do this.
Give Guidelines •
Once your kids can recognize their feelings, provide ground rules for managing them. A good rule of thumb is, “When expressing anger, you are not allowed to hurt yourself or others.” Also, let your kids know what they CAN do. For instance, they might want to write about their feelings, draw a picture or even jog, punch a pillow or talk to a trusted person. You can also give the strategies on how to relax by breathing deeply and exhaling slowly. Finally teach them to work through their feelings. Have them identify what they are feeling, accept it and come up with a plan to move on.
Act With Empathy •
You are probably already teaching your children this and you don’t even know it. Just by meeting their needs helps them learn to care about others. Whenever possible, find opportunities to help your child think about how they would feel being in someone else’s shoes. Recognizing feelings in themselves and others is a key part of learning empathy.
Praise The Positive •
If your child does something mean or cruel, explain why you disapprove and are disappointed. Remember it’s more effective to compliment behavior you DO want than to punish behavior you DON’T want. When your child handles their feelings well or shows concern for others, be sure to let them know they did a good job and you’re proud of them! Always lead by example. When it comes to expressing feelings and showing empathy, your example makes the biggest impression.

HELPING YOUR CHILD DEVELOP GOOD STUDY HABITS The primary purpose of homework is to reinforce the information and skills your child learns at school. It has been reported that teachers of all grades are increasing the amount of homework they assign. This makes homework time-consuming both for parents and children. It is helpful when parents can help their children develop strategies to complete homework assignments in stress-free and learning-friendly ways. It is important that parents and children find a plan that works for their family and stick with it. Here are some tips to use when developing homework strategies:
Use Checklists •
Help your child get into the habit of using checklists for keeping track of homework assignments. A small pad or notebook could be dedicated to listing homework assignments. Once assignments have been completed, crossing off items will help children feel a sense of accomplishment. Some children prefer using a calendar or even a personal digital assistant (PDA) to keep track of due dates and to help priotize assignments.
Prioritize Homework Assignments •
Before beginning a homework session, encourage your child to number the assignments in the order in which they are to be completed. Some children prefer to start with one that’s not too long or difficult. Others prefer saving the easy ones for last and starting on the longest or hardest assignments. Be sure to set realistic goals and stop along the way to check progress.
Set A Designated Study Space •
Children often find it helpful to study in the same place every night where supplies and material are close at hand. This space does not have to be a bedroom, but it should be a quiet, well-lit place with few distractions. Make sure that the television is turned off and that if music is requested, it does not create distraction.
Set A Designated Study Time •
Children should know that a certain time every day is reserved for studying and doing homework. The best time is usually not right after school as most children benefit from time to unwind first. Parents should include their child in making this decision. Even if your child does not have homework, the reserved time should be used to review the day’s lessons, read for pleasure or work on an upcoming school project.

Brookwood Junior High School
Show Interest In Your Child’s Assignment •
Ask about the subject and work to be accomplished. Try to relate homework to your child’s everyday life. For instance, fractions and measurements can be reviewed as the child helps to prepare a meal.
Be A Role Model •
Take the opportunity to read a book or newspaper while your child studies. Reading together helps encourage a life-long love of learning for your children.
Check Over Homework Assignments •
Take time to review your child’s homework with them, but make sure you are not doing it for them. Point out mistakes and help your child correct them. (Note: be sure to discuss with your child’s teacher how best to provide feedback, because they might prefer to see uncorrected work to guide their lessons in class.) Being familiar with your child’s work will help you identify areas of strength and weakness.
Meet With Your Child’s Teachers •
Be sure you understand the goals that the teachers have set for the class. You should consider yourself and your child’s teachers as partners. Also be certain that you understand the teaching methods the teachers are using in the classroom.
Take Your Child’s Struggles Seriously • If you notice your child is struggling with assignments in particular subjects be sure that you discuss this with your child’s teachers. This is especially important in the early grades when children are learning how to read and comprehend. Early help works and will save your child the pain of falling behind in school.
Give Praise •
Applaud you child for successfully completing homework. Nothing builds self-esteem like praise from parents.
