Brookwood School District 167 is creating a program during the summers that offers employment to high school students who are former graduates

MS. MARY TAYLOR, BOARD SECRETARY MR. JOHN DIXON,

of our district.

BOARD MEMBER The program title is: “Bridges Beyond Brookwood” This program invests in our community of learners who are former

graduates. Most of our high school students have limited access to

MRS. TOLEDA HART,

transportation that would allow them to get a job during the summer.

BOARD MEMBER

Many other communities have park district summer programs and hire their local high school youth to work for these programs. Our local high school students do not have this opportunity in our community.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, for every year a person works in their teens, their income raises 14-16 percent in their 20s. When teens choose to have a job, employment teaches responsibility and good work habits, improves time management and organizational skills and helps them save money. 201 E. Studies indicate that twenty (20) or less hours per week is an optimal amount of time for a high school student to work. Some

BOARD SECRETARY

studies indicate that students who balance 10-15 hours of work

per week during the school year earn higher grades than students

who do not work. •

MS. MARY TAYLOR,

DR. TIFFANY GRAHAM,

Recent research shows that working while in high school, and

then later in college, leads to higher wages than just accumulating

more years of education. Researchers at Duke University,

Pepperdine University and the University of Oklahoma claim

that “it’s a mistake to attribute college graduates’ higher wages

exclusively to their schooling, rather than the work experience

they gain while enrolled as scholars.”
