A Message From The Principal
Mrs. Shawn Jackson Dear Parents/Guardians, Governor Pritzker has announced that all Illinois public schools will be closed through the end of the 2019 - 2020 school year due to the COVID-19 health crisis. While this saddens us that we are unable to resume face to face learning, our hope is that the health and wellness of our community will benefit by everyone staying home and social distancing.
We will continue to provide education through remote learning materials, curbside “Grab & Go Meals at Brookwood Middle School ensuring that nutritional needs are met and ongoing communication with families to share information. Thank you for your patience as we plan. We truly miss you all and look forward to our return to school!
STAY WELL!!!

LEARNING IS ON...
Keep Calm, Learning Is On! Tips and Resources for Parents to Support Here are five (5) ways parents can help keep their child on track when school is closed Focus on Key Skills The Readiness Check is like a game but shows your child’s progress with key math and reading
•
skills. As part of the results, it connects you to videos, activities, and more to support learning at home and on your phone!
Keep a Routine •
Create a daily schedule with your child that includes math and reading as well as choice activities such as drawing, building, or dancing. It doesn’t have to be perfect so don’t stress. Parents and teachers have been sharing lots of great examples online and you can find examples on the Learning Hero Roadmap.
Turn Off the News and Talk •
Limit the news which can be scary, especially for young children. Remind your child they are safe and that life will get back to normal. Ask them how they are feel-ing. They can draw or write about it too.
Stay Connected •
Your school is likely creating a plan for digital learning. Stay in touch with teachers and other parents to work through it together. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Enjoy Family Time •
Play cards, cook a new or favorite recipe, make up silly songs, look at old family photos and write a story about them. Your child will be learning and having fun!

HOME ACTIVITIES
SUGGESTED HOME ACTIVITIES FOR YOUR CHILD Here are some suggested activities that you can do with your child at home. These activities can be done on weekends, vacation days, or at any other time your child wants to do something different.
•
Keep a list of groceries you want to buy at the supermarket. Print a meal menu for each day of the week. Ask your child to help with the menu and the shopping for the ingredients.
•
Write down telephone or other messages. Have the child read the messages and learn new words. Encourage him/her to write down messages for you.
•
Look at pictures in a storybook and ask your child what he/she thinks is happening. Then let your child read the story (or you read it to him/her) and compare what he/she thought was happening in the actual story.
•
Ask your child to find all the things in a room starting with a certain letter of the alphabet.
•
Teach your child (boy or girl) to read and follow a recipe.
•
Teach your child his/her full name, address, phone number, and date of birth, including the year.
•
Cut out pictures of squares, triangles, and circles. Let your child find household items with similar shapes.
•
Find words in the newspaper to cut out and make sentences.
•
Make play money (or use real money) and practice making change.

SEASONAL ALLERGIES Allergy season is here again. Allergies are common in young children, but often overlooked and thought to be a common cold.
Allergies or Cold? How do you tell the difference? Colds •
Along with nasal symptoms, you child may also complain of fever or aches and pains. Symptoms begin slowly then escalate over a few days. Symptoms clear up in several days to a week.
Allergies •
Symptoms include clear runny nose, sneezing, wheezing, and watery/itchy eyes. Symptoms begin quickly. Symptoms can last all season or all year long.
Medications used to treat allergies include; decogngestants, antihistamines and steroids. If symptoms are mild you might consider over the counter allergy relief; but remember antihistamines can cause drowsiness and may not be the best choice during school hours. If over the counter remedies don’t give relief, consult your doctor.
Some tips for home include •
Keep the windows in your car and home closed;
•
Limit outdoor activity in the early morning;
•
Set bath time just before bedtime (helps wash off pollen that may cause stuffy nose);
•
Administer allergy medication before your child’s allergy season begins and continue them on a daily basis throughout the season.
