LIFESTYLE LETTER

Let’s go explore!

April 2022 PUBLISHER

Sarah Schierkolk | sarah.schierkolk@citylifestyle.com

With the first quarter of 2022 already in the rear-view mirror, this might be a great time to take a break and hit the road. A change of scenery can be a fun way to reinvigorate your mind and body, and reconnect with your closest people. One of the many blessings we have as Broomfielders is summed up in a word: OPTIONS. And, with so many options, we decided to ask a few of our partners for some ideas to help you change gears and find a new place to go explore. One of those places is Dunton Hot Springs, described as a romantic 1800s ghost town. It also happens to be an exclusive Colorado resort, and you can rent the entire town for corporate retreats, weddings, and family reunions! Check out our cover story to learn more about that, and a couple of other hot spring getaways that you may or may not have heard about. Quick poll–if you have a dog, raise your hand! (or paw, if you’re a pooch gifted with reading ability). We love our pups here in Broomfield, so much so that they often accompany us to a local brewery (like Rails End), Home Depot, or to one of many local dog parks. Our friends at Animal Oasis spilled the kibble on some of their favorite places to visit, and a few tips on staying healthy and safe as we head into spring and summer. Speaking of staying healthy, the ladies of Wild Souls Yoga chimed in with their take on what it means to unplug and reconnect with our surroundings. Being intentional about unplugging is vital to the wellbeing of our constantly-connected culture. That being said, when you are connected and catching up on emails at the local coffee shop, you’ll appreciate knowing more about protecting your data, courtesy of our expert Chad Lemanski of Nerds to Go. Finally, I can’t express enough the appreciation I have for everyone of my partners that make this publication possible. Your contribution to our local economy and community is an essential piece of the fabric we call Broomfield, and I’m honored to represent you and your business. Thank you, be well, and please take some time to enjoy yourself and our community!

PROTECTING YOUR DATA ON-THE-GO!

ARTICLE BY LINDA BOLANDER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH DAWN PHOTOGRAPHY

So, you Renaissance person, you’re going on work-travel with your laptop now that the world is opening up again. You’re going to fascinating places to learn about interesting people, all the while using public Wi-Fi and exposing sensitive company information. Oops! If you don’t feel quite prepared, you’re not alone. That’s why Chad Lemanski, of Nerds to Go, has some advice for those of us about to “trip the light fantastic” out of town. “When you’re on public Wi-Fi, anyone else on the network can see a lot of what you do,” says Chad. “A VPN—or virtual private

network—will help you shop online, use public Wi-Fi and surf the ’net without the world snooping over your shoulder. It’s your most important security measure.” Otherwise, Chad explains, your information can be stolen, even passwords. And while it seems annoying that a hotel or airport doesn’t have high security, he says their primary job is to run hotels and airports, not get you a secure network.

USE A VIRTUAL PRIVATE NET WORK The most popular VPN out there right now is Nord, Chad says. It tends to be expensive, but it’s popular. He also likes Tunnelbear, which is a little more playful. Aside from security, you can get news or local prices directly from other countries by browsing the internet as if you are there. The third VPN he mentions is CyberGhost, which advertises that it “keeps browsing history private,” has fast speeds without limits on bandwidth, and can protect as many as seven devices on one subscription.

KEEP YOUR SYSTEM UPDATED In addition, there are some basics that will help keep you secure wherever you are. First, make sure your software is all updated because threats are always changing. This is an easy no-brainer and there is no real excuse not to do this. One of the best ways to keep software updated is to use the automatic update features. If you’re concerned about an update interrupting your work, set an alarm on your phone to schedule some downtime for you so you can update.

PA SSCODE-PROTECT DEVICES Chad also says to passcode or password all your devices so that even if someone steals it they can’t get in.

ADDITIONAL PROTECTION What else can Chad do for you? He can make sure you have the right antivirus tools, remove malware, tune-up your system, and set you up with a password manager before you leave. “With summer coming up, give us a week to get it done,” Chad says. “And always remember, if you need your tech to work, you need a nerd!”

Practical Tips • Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not in use while you’re traveling. • Keep all your devices physically under your control and supervision. • Put devices into airport scanners last so nobody can yank it while you’re waiting for the rest of your items. • Use caution when posting to social media—uploading photos from Morocco tells everyone you’re not home. • Limit who can read social media posts to friends, and if you can’t do that lock your account until you’re home. • Buy a wallet or cross body bag with protection against proximity readers (skimming devices). Waunita Hot Springs Ranch

Indian Springs Resort

Did you know there are 29 natural hot spring resorts and spas in Colorado? Seven of those are a two-hour drive from Denver and can be incorporated into a single daytrip, the remaining are well worth making it an overnight or more adventure. Of those, we chose three to highlight:

INDIAN SPRINGS RESORT, IDAHO SPRINGS The closest to Denver, this historic site was frequented by Ute and Arapahoe Indians and was first recorded in George A. Jackson’s diary in January of 1859, a few days before finding gold. Records indicate that Frank and Jesse James, William Bonney (Billy the Kid), Sara Bernhardt, Walt Whitman, Baby Doe Tabor, the Vanderbilts and Roosevelts were among the many visitors. Amenities include geo-thermal caves, private baths, outdoor hot tubs, and a mineral water pool. Lodging options range from campsites to resort rooms. At the Spa get the Maize Salt Glo Treatment and/or a massage and exfoliation with corn maize, magnesium, and castor oil. Make your reservations by calling 303-989-6666.

WAUNITA HOT SPRINGS RANCH Surrounded by Gunnison National Forest, this remote lodge is an ideal getaway for horseback riding, fishing, and swimming in the hot-springs-fed pool. This family-friendly

18

R OA D T R IP | TR AVEL

lodge is a vacation rental, hosting several horseback riding weeks (guests will need to bring their own horses). Please contact them at 970-641-1266 for availability. There are three routes to reach Waunita, a short 1-hour (ish) flight, or two scenic mountain drives coming up CO Highways 285 or 24. This is a destination worthy of repeating as their tagline of “the best week of your year” is justified and has been under operations with the current owners for over 50-years. The lodge in particular boasts units with fourrooms and complete privacy.

“Being transformed starts with not just arriving at the destination, but how you get there, and how you return. Consider letting Luxury Rides handle these details so that you can enjoy these experiences and more as a whole family.” -Jim Becker

Jim Becker, Luxury Rides

Depending on the size of your family, the logistics of mountain travel can be daunting. I know! Being a mountain native, with seven (yes 7 children), figuring out how to not just navigate to the destination, but also how to be a tour guide, an entertainer, the problem solver, and more was a regular exercise. It’s what gives us, Luxury Rides, the experience necessary to create for you a “Transformative Experience.” CONTINUED >

PREP YOUR PUP FOR WARM WEATHER SOCIALIZATION

Flowers are blooming, the sun is shining, and we’re all preparing our hearts and schedules for another beautiful Colorado summer. While you might have one metaphorical foot out the door for warm weather hiking and festivals, have you prepared your fur babies for socialization? Animal Oasis of the Rockies, a full-service animal hospital here in Broomfield, reminds us of some things to consider before you head out for a morning at the dog park or a happy hour with friends at your favorite dog-friendly brewery (of which we have many nearby!)

Love is a FourLegged Word

With so many pet-friendly parks, trails and breweries in our area, it’s easy to live “the ruff life.” BE SURE YOUR PETS ARE UP-TO-DATE ON THEIR VACCINATIONS. Double check with your veterinarian that your dog isn’t due for any shots to avoid sickness when socializing with other people or pets. Rabies, distemper (DHPP), lepto, and bordetella are all vaccines to check on. DO A SOCIAL CHECK-IN WITH YOUR DOG. ARE THEY READY TO BE AROUND OTHERS? Cold weather leaves walking trails and parks more sparse than in the summer months. How will your fur babies do around other dogs, as well as children and adults? If the question has you gritting your teeth, you may want to consider a trainer. This applies especially to puppies who haven’t yet had to adapt to social situations. DO YOUR PART IN MAKING SURE YOUR PET FEELS COMFORTABLE. Practice friendly interactions with both humans and pets that you both come into contact with. This will help your pup feel at ease. Be sure you have the correct fitting harness when out and about, and keep his favorite treats on hand to reward good behavior. CALL ANIMAL OASIS WITH QUESTIONS. Animal Oasis is known for its exceptional customer service and patient care (check out their Google reviews!). The team would be happy to provide care for your four-legged friends, as well as recommend a trainer if needed. When in doubt, call the pros. WHERE TO NOW? Get out and enjoy the sunshine with your best furry friend! Rails End Beer Company, Frolic Brewery, Wonderland Brewery, 4 Noses Brewery and Romero’s K9 Club & Tap House are all dog-friendly. For a true dog’s day out, head to the Broomfield Commons Dog Park, The Boneyard at Reliance Dog Park in Erie, or The Great Bark Dog Park in Lafayette. AP R I L 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Unplug, Reconnect Mount Princeton Retreat

WITH WILD SOULS YOGA IN BROOMFIELD IT’S SPRING, AND PEOPLE ARE ITCHING TO GET OUTSIDE. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF RECONNECTING WITH NATURE THROUGH YOGA? Yoga teaches us the natural cycles of nature, of life, and how to connect with those changing rhythms for our health. Spring is a time to cleanse physically, energetically, and mentally. We thaw ourselves from the cold, wet winter and come into a lighter, more playful way of being. A yoga practice is a great way to lighten up, to detox, and to move out stagnant energy from our being.

Yoga is a way to connect with ourselves. Yoga gives us the opportunity to understand how we feel in our hearts, our minds, and our bodies. Once we have a better idea of how we feel, we then get the chance to shift to better support how we want to feel, how we want to show up in life.

BROOMFIELD IS A FAMILY-ORIENTED COMMUNITY. HOW CAN YOGA HELP FAMILIES GET OUT AND EXPERIENCE THE NATURAL WORLD TOGETHER? Yoga is a wonderful family-centric and community centric activity! All ages and all bodies are able to do some sort of yoga practice. Our Saturday classes at Rails End Beer Company are family friendly. Heck, we even have dogs at yoga from time to time!

A busy mom or dad NEEDS to learn to take time for themselves. The better we take care of ourselves, the better equipped we are to take care of those we love. Carving out time for a moment to stop, to breathe, and to check in with ourselves is a powerful practice.

MALCOM'S EXPERIENCE.

Where Artists & Humans Blossom

Malcolm D. Hayes III

32

B ACK STAGE | A RTS + CULTURE

Initially Malcolm was a student of Colorado Conservatory of Dance’s Summer Intensive in 2020. He was so intrigued with the programming and faculty that he relocated from Indiana to join CCD as a scholarship student that fall. “Since coming to CCD, I have learned much more than just how to be a dancer but how to really move! Foremost, CCD has taught me how to be an artist. But also it’s made me a better person. I have found a safe place, a second home, and deep inspiration. Previous dance studio experiences had negative influences and attitudes that were really hard on me as a young man and dancer. This has been the opposite experience for me at CCD. I am beyond blessed and grateful. The instructors have supported me and encouraged me to find my own voice. CCD is the place where I have truly blossomed. Thank you Julia and everyone at CCD!” Free programming at the Broomfield Auditorium, includes CCD’s signature annual Anti-Bullying Ballet, with integrated social-emotional learning (SEL) components serving Broomfield student residents. THE SANDWICH GENERATION IS GROWING, ALONG WITH ITS RESPONSIBILITIES. 36

F IN A N CIA L BU Z Z | FIN ANCE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S

Across the United States, millions of middle-aged adults struggle with the dual responsibilities of raising a child and caring for an aging parent. They are members of what is commonly called the sandwich generation. In fact, a 2020 report by New York Life found that 48% of the sandwich generation are expected to be in a caregiving position in some capacity for six or more years. (1) The rise of the sandwich generation is a byproduct of two powerful trends: (1) women giving birth later in life, and (2) the increasing longevity of the U.S. population. When you combine these factors with a growing number of young adults living with their parents, it’s easy to see why so many middle-aged Americans are concerned about the future. If you are one of them, here are a few steps you can take to protect your loved ones and prepare for the financial responsibilities ahead.

HAVE A PLAN FOR ELDERCARE. Talk to your parents about the kind of care they’d prefer, and discuss it with your siblings. See which, if any, family members have the capacity to help provide care and which home would be the most accessible. In case external help is needed, research local resources to see what is available-and at what cost. Most importantly, consult an attorney and make sure you have all the legal documents needed to make sudden medical and financial decisions if the need arises.

WE TREAT YOU LIKE FAMILY.

EVALUATE YOUR RESOURCES. Before determining a course of action, make sure you know what resources are available. Can your parents pay for care on their own? Do they have long-term care insurance? Do they own any whole life insurance policies with living benefits2 that they may be able to use to pay for care? Can other family members contribute financially? Is public assistance a viable option?

PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN’S LIFESTYLE AND FUTURE. While caring for a parent is a huge responsibility, it’s important to make sure your children’s needs and your own retirement needs are also met. If you haven’t done so already, set up a college fund and make funding it a priority. If your place of employment offers a 401(k), try to contribute the maximum amount allowable, and make sure you contribute at least enough to get the full company match. Also, consider purchasing a term or whole life insurance policy that can help to protect your family’s future in case anything tragic happens to you. Caring for children and aging relatives at the same time is never easy, but with the right planning and resources, it is possible to do both. With so many people joining the ranks of the sandwich generation, now’s the time to start planning for the future.
