16 year old Timothy, (center) who received our 50th heart transplant with members of his family and care team.
We’re Celebrating with Timothy
Heart Transplants
Feeling extremely fatigued, Timothy’s parents brought him to our emergency room. A cardiac evaluation brought nearly unbelievable news—he needed a new heart. “We’re so happy for Timothy, and so proud of our entire team for all they’ve done for our 50 heart transplant patients and families,” said Maryanne Chrisant, MD, Medical Director of Heart Failure, Cardiomyopathy and Transplant. “This milestone, at the 8th anniversary of our program, would not be possible without our generous donor families and we thank them.” Watch his transplant journey at JDCH.com/50Transplant.
Brigitte Had Behavioral Challenges That Needed To Be Addressed... THERAPIES 4 KIDS WAS THERE TO IMPROVE THEM ALL
W
hen Brigitte’s family relocated to South Florida, she was having difficulties in school. She was unable to provide eye contact, lacked verbal expression and was unable to tolerate others in her space. That’s when her parents reached out to Therapies 4 Kids.
“In just eight months, the changes in Brigitte were amazing. Her separation anxiety improved, she was able to work for longer periods of time independently and the group sessions at T4K took Brigitte to a whole new level where she was able to overcome social obstacles,” says Brigitte’s mom, Stephanie. “Therapies 4 Kids ABA and Speech therapists worked to design a program to tailor Brigitte’s needs. The staff provided a nurturing, nonjudgmental environment where children are treated with dignity and respect. They engaged Brigitte in learning activities that held her attention. Above all, they didn’t give up on her and took the time to build a meaningful relationship with her.”

n South Florida, there are countless clinics where family members and caregivers can take their loved ones to receive therapeutic services hoping it will improve their quality of life. It’s likely they will see improvement but very unlikely that all the services they need will
be offered, under one roof. For over 14 years, Therapies 4 Kids has provided a spectrum of services in five South Florida locations. CALL NOW FOR A FREE CONSULTATION

BROWARD
A Good Time To Be Blue
LOCAL AUTISM-FRIENDLY HAPPENINGS SHINE A LIGHT ON THE SPECTRUM
A
pril is one sensory-friendly month for children and adults affected by autism. Not only does April 2 mark annual World Autism Awareness Day, designated by the U.N. General Assembly and first observed in 2008, it also kicks off World Autism Month. In recognition, hundreds of thousands of landmarks, buildings, homes and communities around the world will go light blue, the sensory-friendly color. Throughout the month, special events and educational activities will promote understanding, acceptance and support of people on the spectrum. Broward is no exception. Among the autism-friendly happenings around the county are: CONNECT & PLAY ON WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS DAY. April 2, 4:30-8pm,
South Side Cultural Arts Center, 701 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale The free, family-friendly event features bounce houses, carnival games, interactive activities, live performances, face painting, a balloon artist, a resource fair and a chill zone sensory room.
Activities include a collaborative, giant puzzle piece wall, a friendship color collage workshop, and the Move-it-Sunday music and movement program. All activities are included in the regular admission price, but free admission will be provided for families who take part in an on-site study benefiting autism research. The event is part of the museum’s recent initiative, YAA for ALL: Access to Lifelong Learning. For more information, visit www.youngatartmuseum.org/yaaforall.php. SENSORY-FRIENDLY SCREENING: DEEP SEA. April 20, 10am, AutoNation
IMAX Theater, 401 SW Second St., Fort Lauderdale Thanks to the Museum of Discovery and Science’s recently launched thirdSaturdays series, people on the spectrum can enjoy IMAX movies in an environment adapted especially for them. Endorsed by the Autism Society of Florida, the screenings include raised lights, lowered sound and films in 2D. The audience is free to move about, and families
are permitted to bring their own glutenfree snacks or other small items to enhance their comfort. Regular ticket prices apply. For tickets and information call 954-7130930 or visit www.mods.org/imax/sensoryfriendly. SENSORY-FRIENDLY PERFORMANCE: PETE THE CAT. April 27, 3pm, Broward
Center for the Performing Arts, Amaturo Theater, 201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale Just across from the IMAX theater, the Broward Center offers similar special accommodations for theater-goers on the spectrum. The productions include special seating arrangements, pre-curtain activities, stage and lighting modifications, lower sound and availability of noisecancelling devices. Plus there’s a quiet room for those experiencing sensory overload. Recommended for pre-K-age 3, Pete the Cat follows a new adventure of the hilarious blue feline. For tickets visit www.browardcenter.org.
SENSORY SUNDAY - CELEBRATING AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH. April 14,
10am-noon, Young At Art Museum, 751 SW 121 Ave., Davie
TOMORROW’S LIBRARY TODAY In Broward County, the library of the future is already a reality — virtual reality, that is. AR/VR headsets, a new medium for learning and discovery experiences, are now available for checkout at nine library locations. Cardholders can use the phone-powered devices made by MERGE to access thousands of VR experiences online. Plus, the MERGE Miniverse content portal streams more than 300 kid-safe VR and 360 video experiences from sources such as NASA, National Geographic and Disney directly onto smartphones. Participating branches include the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale, Carver Ranches in West Park, Deerfield Beach, Hallandale Beach, Pompano Beach, Southwest Regional Library in Pembroke Pines, Stirling Road in Hollywood, Sunrise and Tamarac.
The novel pilot program follows the launch of another innovation late last year — the MERGE Cube — which gives users the futuristic opportunity to learn, create and actually hold in the palm of their hand such virtual objects as the solar system, fossils and ancient artifacts. Cubes are available for checkout at 36 of 38 locations. One more technological advance, the Digital Memory Lab, kicked off the year at the Weston Library, making it one of only seven in the country to offer the free service. The lab offers instruction and equipment to preserve photographs, slides, audio tapes and VHS and VHS-C video tapes by converting them to digital format. Orientation sessions are a prerequisite for using the professional-grade equipment. Free digital-preservation classes are also available. The branch is at 4205 Bonaventure Blvd. Call 954-357-5420 to register for classes and lab use.

WORRIED
SICK? HOW TO BREAK THE HABIT OF FRET TING OVER YOUR KIDS BY SHANNON DEAN
I
admit it. In my filing cabinet, hidden behind medical records, I have a folder on the AFM virus — an extremely rare polio-like illness — just in case. I have always been a worrier, but when I became a mother, my fretting reached crippling new heights. Suddenly, I panicked over perceived threats like terrorism, school shootings, abductions and rare childhood diseases. I know that I am not alone. A recent survey revealed that over half of polled mothers were “obsessed” with concerns about their children. No surprise there. When I share my unease with other moms, they give me a knowing, sympathetic nod. We’re all struggling under the weight of bearing responsibility for the children we love more than anything. At the same time, we suspect our anxiety is inching toward excessive levels. HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH? A parent’s worry is instinctual and essential. We have a sixth sense about our kids’ well-being because it helps us to keep them safe. So we don’t want to silence our worries. But there is an important distinction between what’s constructive and what’s toxic. “When worry becomes toxic, it ceases to serve as the built-in alarm system nature meant it to be and instead becomes a painful problem,” says Dr. Edward Hallowell, author of Worry: Controlling It and Using It Wisely. Most experts agree that worry is destructive if it causes regular emotional distress or interferes with daily functioning. Fixating on “what ifs” and worst-case scenarios is a red flag. Such rumination can turn an innocent concern into something worse. For example, the worry “my child is struggling with his homework” could morph into “my child is not at grade level,” then move on to “he’ll never get into a decent college” and end up with “I’m not a good enough parent.” SHORT AND LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES Although many of us hope that a good dose of worry staves off disaster, the opposite is true. Misplaced worry can severely affect our health, our selfesteem, our productivity and our family’s well-being. Even worse, experts warn that chronic worriers can pass an anxious outlook to their kids. “How you live will influence how your children live,” explains Cindi McMenamin, author of 10 Secrets to Becoming a WorryFree Mom. “What you worry about, they will worry about, too.” A BREAKABLE CYCLE “It’s vital to understand that chronic worry is a habit, which with conscious effort can be broken,” says Dr. Beverly Potter, author of The Worry Wart’s Companion. Although breaking this cycle may take effort, the results are worth it. Women who learn the live now-worry later approach (used by many men) suffer much lower rates of depression than overthinking women.
Here are five tips that may help: Define The Real Issue: When concerns spiral out of control, identify what you’re truly worried about. Our darkest fears stem from scenarios that may never materialize. Rather than imagining vague, bleak outcomes, identify the specific concern at play. Once you define it, take action and move on. Regain Control: A perceived lack of control fuels worries. Instead of being paralyzed by fear, seek reliable information to determine if fears are rational. If they are, take manageable steps toward a solution. For example, address concerns about your child’s academic performance by finding one immediate action, like setting up an appointment with his teacher or guidance counselor. Reach Out: Avoid worrying alone. Share concerns with your spouse, a trusted friend or family member who can help with perspective. If no one is immediately available, ask yourself what your most trusted confidant would say. Find Productive Distractions: Lose yourself in comforting activities like scrap-booking, reading or a good movie. Exercise, yoga and meditation are also excellent options. Exercise relieves stress and releases endorphins that enhance physical and emotional well-being. Yoga reprograms your body to relax while meditation encourages your mind to follow. Surrender: Once you’ve identified, shared and addressed your worries, the last healthy step is to let go. Hand your concerns to the universe or a higher power. There are many ways to accomplish this. Suggestions are praying, meditating or watching journal pages burn. Trusting in wise, compassionate intervention releases the worries that no longer serve you. Changing the worry habit takes continuous effort and self-policing, but even small amounts of self-awareness yield noticeable results. Yesterday, not only did I allow my kids to play in the rain, but I joined them. Although I was tempted to worry about their health, my floors and our dinner, I allowed myself to enjoy the moment. My kids were thrilled and, in the end, all was well. I now realize that my compulsive worry was an attempt to prevent anything from ruining moments like this. How ironic that if I had worried a little less, I might have had them all along.

WORDS of wisdom
The Nearly Naked Truth THE REAL SKINNY ON SHOPPING FOR A SWIMSUIT IN A MOM BODY BY PAM MOLNAR I dread shopping for swimsuits. I know I am not alone when I say that. Normally, I am the kind of shopper who can find something quickly. Sales people love me because I don’t waffle back and forth when choosing new furniture. I picked out all the items for my remodeled kitchen in an afternoon. But swimwear? That takes forever. In fact, I probably spent less time looking for my wedding dress than I did looking for last year’s swimsuit. Like most women, I guess I fear being judged. Let’s be honest. We have all seen those women who clearly did not use the mirror in the dressing room. They are the highlight of people-watching on the beach. While it’s true that people may judge your choice of granite or living room sofa, it’s just not the same. You are not wearing your granite on your way-over-25-check-out-all-my-flaws-post-children body. There is something to be said for those bathing suits from the early 1900s. I normally shop for a swimsuit alone, but I wonder if it wouldn’t be better taking a friend for moral support. A friend would understand why you need to order margaritas at lunch and she would not remind you about them when you complained about your muffin top in the dressing room. No, I brave the dressing room sans friends (and margaritas). I wander around the swimwear department grabbing swimsuits that only look good on the hanger. I undress and try them on in a tiny room with bad lighting. While I criticize every wrinkle, stretch mark and pound, I make a silent promise to stop at the gym on the way home. After hitting three or four stores at the mall, I either give up and go home or settle on something that doesn’t look “too bad.” Online shopping is no better. Sure, you are in the comfort of your own home and you save yourself the embarrassment of running in and out of the dressing room looking for bigger sizes, but you open yourself up to another frustration: You have to guess how these suits will fit. The swimsuits look adorable on these tiny models with big boobs and flat stomachs but that wasn’t my body before I had children, let alone now.

The online stores offer size charts and body-type suggestions, but honestly, they are no help. The size charts are from size 2 to size 16. Wouldn’t it be nice if they could show the suit on models that fit in each size? That way, if you were a size 12, you would be able to see what your size-12 butt was going to look like in the suit versus the size-2 butt. But it’s not like that. You only see the suit on the picture of the Barbie Doll-shaped model and you have to guess. But that’s what I did this year. I searched online for what I thought looked nice and I hit the purchase button. The good news is that it is back-ordered until May, so I can put off the agony of trying it on until then.
