end a hand to a needy neighbor. Tutor a young student. Maybe volunteer at a local charity. High-schoolers have a wide array of ways to earn community service hours. Here are two engaging opportunities that are a bit out of the ordinary. TEEN ADOPTION AMBASSADOR: The Humane Society of Broward County offers a perfect program for pet-lovers. By partnering with a parent, teens provide temporary homes for select dogs, cats and even rabbits, which have been spayed or neutered and vaccinated. All food and supplies are provided for the pet. Teen Ambassadors earn three hours for every day the pet is at their home, and can pile up additional hours with activities such as walking their dog in public wearing its “Adopt Me” vest. Ambassadors also present the pet to the adopting family. Teens who can’t have a pet in their home can earn service hours as Advocates by trying to recruit Ambassadors. APP-TITUDE FOR SCIENCE: The Museum of Discovery and Science’s two-year internship on coding, app development and careers in science provides high school juniors the opportunity to not only earn volunteer service hours, but also college credit and a stipend while advancing their knowledge in STEM education. “Participating in this program has opened a gateway of innovation and enterprise for me, and I plan to fully take advantage of the skills I learned throughout my college and professional career,” says Kevin Deng, of Cypress Bay High School in Weston.

COOL SUMMER Today I was hard on myself. As I evil-eyed a pile of second-grade workbooks, most of them unfinished, I chastised myself for not making my son get through them this summer. Oh, we started out strong in June with two or more pages out of each book plus an online lesson on ABC Mouse every weekday. I had a good schedule going for my 3-year-old with preschool books, too. I even had my own “pages for prizes” program with fun dollar-store rewards for the boys after they completed enough pages. Within the first month, though, we’d all run out of steam. Fights were had, prizes got boring, brains were fried (mostly Mommy’s), viruses hit that threw us all off schedule, and basic survival with three kids (one being a baby) took precedence over pencil, paper and books. Basically, life happened. Now, with the oldest heading back to school soon, I started to get grumpy because I feel like I failed at this gettingahead education thing. Hold up … get over yourself, woman! I have to remind myself that just because my kids didn’t sit and “study” every day doesn’t mean they weren’t learning. They were just learning differently, maybe even better. So what did they do all summer and why does it matter? THEY SPENT TIME OUTDOORS. This is the simplest and easiest way for kids to learn all kinds of stuff. You can only do so much sitting at a desk staring at pages. Stepping outside leads to a whole new world of real, experiential learning. They chased butterflies, kept beetles in bug jars, dug for worms to feed our chickens, played with caterpillars and had a blast catching lightning bugs (apparently, my 3-year-old is more coordinated than I am). They dug in the dirt and played in the mud (and learned to follow Mommy’s rules for such messy activities — well, almost). I even heard the

oldest teaching his brother how to count with rocks (before they started throwing them, which ended in tears, a bit of blood and more learning about following rules). Many of us will recall spending lots of time outside during childhood, but are our own kids getting their daily dose of nature? The sad truth is, these days, most are lacking in outdoor playtime, turning instead to too much screen time. This has led to an increase in behavioral and attention disorders, not to mention obesity and health problems. “Nature-deficit disorder” is a fitting term for this situation. Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder, explains that this “leads to diminished use of the senses, attention difficulties, and higher rates of physical and emotional illnesses.” It’s easy to see that the simple act of getting outside has a huge positive impact on physical, mental and emotional development — not to mention the bonus of kids actively learning about the world around them. Science class reinvented! I feel extremely blessed to have a good amount of land for my kids to explore, but even if you don’t have much space, there are plenty of adventures to be had in a backyard, park, public school field or on vacation. You can go for walks around town or on trails or simply hang out on the porch for some fresh air. If your kid went to summer camp, you’re gold — with social skill-building added in for the win! THEY WERE ACTIVE. Those little bodies need to move — a lot! All that outside time brought active water play with slip ’n’ slides, water balloons, kiddie pools and squirt guns. The older one learned to ride his bike without training wheels (something he put off

“SCHOOL” BY LJ KUNKEL

for a long time) and finally loves it. We went for walks, sometimes with running involved, which was good for all of us. They burned off energy, had a ton of fun on the trampoline (believe me, that is a real workout!) and climbed trees. (Mom was not too excited about this one — enter more rules about not climbing too high). We all know that exercise is important for physical growth, fitness and health, but it’s a major brain-booster as well. Research shows that there is a positive correlation between physical activity and better grades. The more active they are, the better they do in school. This is really not surprising when you consider that exercise is proven to create changes in brain structure and function, which increase cognitive ability, boost mood, clear brain fog and improve memory. And it doesn’t have to be a structured workout. They get in plenty of cardiovascular and strengthening moves with all the hopping, running, squatting, stooping, bending, pushing and lifting that kids naturally do. THEY GOT BORED. Yes, this is a good thing. Boredom is not the enemy. Today’s helicopter-parent tendency is to immediately come to the rescue with ready-made crafts, activities, games and iPads when kids whine the dreaded, “I’m bored!” Those two little words don’t make me cringe, because

it’s an opportunity for them to learn something on their own. I just tell them, “OK, you can help me clean … or go find something to do.” Believe me, they will find something to do! Besides, amusing themselves is an important skill they will need for the rest of their lives. (Side note: Depending on age and maturity, you’ll need to enforce boundaries. We are still working on understanding that there is no taking things without permission, destroying anything or fighting. More rules, oh my!) Boredom has some bonafide benefits. It fosters creativity, boosts motivation and promotes independence. Bonus: It helps parents to not constantly feel obligated to entertain. You know what surprised me the most? By the end of the summer, my anti-book son started reading on his own. For fun. Because I wasn’t “making” him. Rest assured, there’s no reason to feel guilty about an academically “wasted” summer. The kids learn so much more than we realize. And when next summer comes around, I learned to just relax — and let learning happen! LJ Kunkel is a health/wellness writer and mom of three boys who fully endorse her theories on experiential education.

Back to School… Is it

SAFE? BY GREG CARANNANTE

MEASURES HAVE BEEN TAKEN BUT PARENTS’ CONCERNS LINGER

A

s the new school year begins practically six months to the day after the shootings at Stoneman Douglas High, it’s no surprise that a cloud of safety uncertainty continues to hover over Broward schools. Some sense

of insecurity could linger for years following that tragic Feb. 14. Swirling in its wake are reverberations that bring both cause for

concern and reason for hope. They range from parents’ continuing apprehensions and outcries that not enough is being done about protecting students, to uplifting victim-support outreaches like the Broward Education Foundation’s GoFundMe campaign, which recently culminated with nearly $10 million in donations from almost 37,000 people. They range from a homeschooled high school senior’s controversial allegations that the district is sitting on $100 million approved for school safety four years ago, to tangible results like the school board’s creation of an Armed Safe School Officer position and the hiring of an independent security firm. And, of course, there is the spectrum of responses to MSD students themselves. Weapons-rights advocates are sticking to their guns as the students’ efforts continue to draw acclaim, such as the comment recently offered by President Bill Clinton at a Broward Center appearance. “The Stoneman Douglas students have done something I could never do as president,” he said, “and that’s make people want to vote for people who support sensible gun legislation.” The voices of these high schoolers have been heard loud and clear. But what are the feelings of younger students and their parents? Kids in elementary school are perhaps more vulnerable and most likely don’t fully comprehend the issues or even the danger. “The hardest thing for a parent is to leave your kids somewhere without you. You expect that place to be safe,” says Sara Rogger, one of three moms and a teacher of young students who recently spoke with Broward Family Life, expressing concerns that ranged from guarded optimism to outright anxiety about the safety of kids returning to school this month.

SARA ROGGER, a database manager for the Broward Public Library Foundation, has four children. Among them is a daughter in fifth grade and a son in first grade at Croissant Park Elementary in Fort Lauderdale. WHAT WAS THE REACTION OF YOUR KIDS AFTER THE SHOOTING? It’s hard to have a conversation with kids at that age. It was basically a conversation every morning dropping them off: Just make sure if you hear something, say something. It’s not tattling on anybody, you have to make the teachers and administrators aware. They had numerous drills afterward. The first couple of weeks, my daughter did not want to go to school. She was very nervous. I was

My son’s big thing was the teachers pushing on him that if you hear something or see something, say something. DO YOU FEEL SECURE IN SENDING YOUR KIDS BACK TO SCHOOL? I went to a couple of the security meetings held by the School Board and the school. It makes me feel better knowing that their school is updating a lot of the security cameras, putting in a new system. They’re talking about replacing the windows and making one point of entry for the school, and they plan on having all that done by the time the kids go back to school, which helps. But I’m never gonna feel completely comfortable with it. It’s just so easy for people to get on campus nowadays. DO YOU FEEL ENOUGH IS BEING DONE TO PROTECT STUDENTS? I feel like a lot of these things should have been in place by now. It’s unfortunate it takes something like this to happen for them to make a safer place for our children. If all or at least some of the security measures are put in place by the time they go back to school, I absolutely do feel like they’ll be safer.

SHARI HOFFMAN is a sales person for Weatherby Healthcare and the mother of a fourth-grader at Riverside Elementary in Coral Springs, as well as a 16-year-old high-schooler at J.P. Taravella. WHAT WAS THE REACTION OF YOUR KIDS AFTER THE SHOOTING? Riverside is about six miles from Douglas. It’s a neighboring school. My niece is a senior there. She was one of the first kids who ran out of the school when the alarm went off and she continued running.

nervous myself and I kept them home for a couple of days afterward because my mind was just in shambles over it.

School Safety

It was all very close to home for my younger son. I think once he realized it, he was a little upset. But he doesn’t seem scared or stressed. I don’t think he understands the full scope of it. I immediately ordered bulletproof backpacks for my kids, and my little one and I did a couple of drills. I showed him how to put the bag to shield himself. I don’t normally freak out but I just felt like I needed to do something. I feel like there’s no security. I mean if somebody walks in the front door with a gun, there’s nothing stopping him.

Broward School District Takes Action The School District has taken the following safety measures for all schools, most of which were outlined in a June letter from Superintendent Robert Runcie. • An independent security firm is conducting risk assessments, as well as reviewing policies, training and security staffing models to provide recommendations for enhancing security. • To comply with new state legislation, the district is working to provide at least one School Resource Officer or school safety officer at each school for the new school year. A new position has been created for an Armed Safe School Officer, exclusively dedicated to serving as a guardian and located at schools where a municipality is unable or unwilling to participate in the SRO program. • Surveillance camera systems were to have been upgraded at all schools by the end of June. Expedited Single Point of Entry measures for campus visitors, which use fencing and door systems to limit access to one entrance, will be completed at all schools by the end of the calendar year or the beginning of next. • All routine safety protocols will be continuously reinforced, such as requiring the wearing of identification badges and locking of classroom doors at all times, and conducting regular emergency preparedness training for faculty, staff and students. • Enhanced active assailant training will be implemented for all staff in the new school year, as well as additional training specifically for students. • Mental health services for students and staff are being expanded throughout the summer and for next school year. • Beginning with directing administrators to ensure the proper reporting of all discipline incidents, the district will undergo an extensive review of its discipline policies and programs over the next several months, and with input from our community, make improvements. • The School Board is making efforts to get two stop-bleeding kits installed in every public school. The kits are designed to help victims of shootings and other traumatic events. • The District will continue to engage the community for suggestions and encourages parents and families to remind their children – if you see something, say something. DO YOU FEEL SECURE IN SENDING YOUR KIDS BACK TO SCHOOL? No. I work in east Fort Lauderdale, and through the end of the school year, every day I had anxiety driving to work. The further from my house I got, the more ill I was feeling. When everything happened, my son was in aftercare at school, and to be honest with you, I think the aftercare situation scared me even more because the school resource officers are not there during aftercare. There’s a little bit less of a threat at the elementary schools because the students themselves become more of a threat in a high school, and you’re not going to have that many young kids who are going to try to bring in guns, obviously. But if there’s a crazy person that just wants to go into the school and start shooting, I really don’t feel like there’s any protection. I really don’t feel safe. SO, YOU DON’T FEEL ENOUGH IS BEING DONE TO PROTECT STUDENTS? No, I don’t. They’re talking about a plan. There’s a police officer on campus but they’re not checking the bags, there’s no metal detectors, no bullet-proof glass. Yes, you have to come in the front, but you can jump a fence and get into the schools — there’s no barbed wire. I think they need a couple of resource officers at each school. They need to secure the outside perimeters. The high schools probably need a double fence. The elementary schools have these little fences — anyone can get into the playgrounds and right into the schools. All of our schools are open. They’re not closed-in schools. They should have some kind of bulletproof glass in the front office if that’s the single point of entry. If not, they need to have one of the resource officers stationed in the front office. And I really believe every school should have metal detectors. They should have better gun control, but even if the laws get passed, it’s not going to be an immediate fix. It’s going to be years until they’re able to minimize all the guns out there. You go into a courthouse, any government building, and they have all kinds of security. But schools, where you have helpless children, there’s so little security. And I don’t think the solution is arming teachers. I think that’s the most ridiculous idea in the world.

JUDITH ARRIETA works with 3- to 6-year-olds at Montessori Learning Land Child Care in Pompano Beach. She has an older daughter and a son, who is a senior at Douglas.

We’re just seven minutes away from the high school. And where my oldest kids went to preschool is right across from there. It’s really close to home. We went to the memorial. We talk about the 17 people and their families a lot. So my 9-year-old is pretty empathetic and she thinks about them and what they could be doing. Nicholas [Dworet] really enjoyed swimming and Jaime [Guttenberg] loved to dance and my daughter loves dancing. So I think being so close, they feel really connected to it. They’re not afraid like the adults are. They don’t fear going to school like we worry about, but they do think about the kids a lot.

WHAT WAS THE REACTION OF YOUR KIDS AFTER THE SHOOTING? My son jumped over the school fence and ran home with four friends, leaving his car behind. In shock they watched the events unfolding on live TV. DO YOU FEEL SECURE IN SENDING YOUR KIDS BACK TO SCHOOL? I don’t feel 100% secure, but I have to accept that authorities and the school are doing their best to keep our kids safe. I feel it’s safe but there’s always something in the back of your head.

DO YOU FEEL SECURE IN SENDING YOUR KIDS BACK TO SCHOOL? It’s like we should be very, very worried all the time. It doesn’t feel like as big a threat at the elementary level. We just have to keep telling them to be alert. It amazes me how wonderful the teachers are. I feel very very confident in any of my kids’ teachers that they would do anything they could to protect my children. And that makes me feel good. Even if there’s nothing on the outside that has changed, I do feel very, very strongly that the teachers are heroic and would protect any of my kids and any of the kids in the class — and that is something pretty special.

DO YOU FEEL ENOUGH IS BEING DONE TO PROTECT STUDENTS? Not enough. Definitely stronger gun-control laws would make a big difference..

KATIE SOLI of Coral Springs has two preschoolers in First United Methodist and second- and fourth-graders in Park Springs Elementary. WHAT WAS THE REACTION OF YOUR KIDS AFTER THE SHOOTING? We tried to keep it from them as long as possible. My 7-year-old didn’t really understand at all. She knew that there were a lot of mommies and daddies that were really sad. But my 9-year-old understood, and for the first few days she was worried about going back to school. So we kept them home.

DO YOU FEEL ENOUGH IS BEING DONE TO PROTECT STUDENTS? It’s frustrating. I would like to see some more security at the doors. I’d like to see greater fences. I think the parents really are going to have to be the ones to mobilize and pay for change. I think that the PTOs need to mobilize, fundraise what they can, and put into place whatever their particular needs are at their schools. There’s just a lot of great discussion about what we can do. Parents at our school have talked about: Can we fundraise for buzzers? Can we fundraise for additional staff to escort the children from class to class instead of the kids? The system at our school is that the kids are messengers, and if one kid has to go to the clinic two other students have to take him. That concerns me that there’s so many students out of class. And since it’s elementary school you don’t want them to feel like they’re locked-in like a prison. So we’ve talked about fundraising for an additional adult that could help them walk the students so they’re not just out and about. We’ve talked about buzzers for the front door to let people in or magnetic film for the windows. I sometimes feel like when you start to bring up suggestions to add security measures, there’s pushback — mostly coming from other parents — saying that if there’s somebody that wants to harm anybody, they can get through those barriers. So it’s hard to get much accomplished.

The Children’s Services Council of Broward County (CSC) funds programs that enhance school readiness and academic success. These initiatives strengthen early care and education programming in an effort to meet the comprehensive needs of child care centers, teachers, and families. Activities include: • Providing training and technical assistance using the Positive Behavior Support (PBS) approach specific to infant/toddler inclusion, family involvement, cultural sensitivity, and developmentally appropriate curricula. • Assisting providers with development of Quality Improvement Plans based upon needs identified by the appropriate environmental rating/scale assessment and linked to positive child outcomes. • Implementing evidence-based programming that helps support the PBS approach by focusing on training and support of preschool teachers, staff, and parents in order to prevent and/or address behavioral problems in at-risk children. For community resources, helpful websites, Broward Public Schools information, and child care options, view the interactive Broward County Family Resource Guide at www.cscbroward.org. This publication is available in English, Español, Kreyòl, and Português for the convenience of readers. The CSC’s mission is to provide leadership, advocacy and resources necessary to enhance the lives of the children of Broward County and empower them to become responsible, productive adults. The CSC funds nearly 100 programs that serve children and families, advocates for policies that protect the interests of future generations and provides leadership that brings the child-serving community together. The CSC works with community partners to help “turn the curve” in a positive direction on issues such as: maternal and child health; family strengthening; after-school and out-of-school time; kinship care; youth leadership, advocacy and employment; and support for youth and families with special needs. WORDS of

Wisdom

A Model Life at 40? NOT EXACTLY THE ONE THIS MOM EXPECTED, BUT… BY KATHRYN STREETER

I

’m in my 40th year of life, and today I sat for most of the morning at the kitchen table working on my 7-year-old son’s model Porsche, a beautiful red Boxster — at least that’s what the picture shows on the box. School is out and he and his older sister have asked: “Mom, are you going to be using the kitchen?” “Well, noooo,” I answer cautiously. Turns out that today is Car Day and the chosen venue is the kitchen. My son has decided that he’s not waiting for the weekend when Dad can help him put his new model car together. He’s emptied the contents all over the table before I realize what’s happening. Forget my personal ambitions for the day; my to-do list will have to wait. My son cheers me on as I painstakingly follow the instructions to assemble the Porsche. Then he deserts me, running off to continue a game with his sister that involves toy cars of every kind imaginable, unearthed from their hiding places around the house and now all over the kitchen floor. Unbelievable. It reminds me of games they played as 3- and 5-year-olds. But apparently that stage isn’t over, even though they have long aged out of it. Honestly, assembling model cars is not my forte. It’s mind-boggling: the absurd directions with drawings that don’t match up to the tiny pieces I’ve neatly laid out on the table, the pre-drilled holes that aren’t big enough for the wimpy, poorly manufactured screws. “Oh no!” A rebellious screw goes ping, ping, ping down onto the wood floor and immediately becomes invisible. The kids let out a sigh of dismay: “Moooom!” I lamely remind them that it wasn’t my idea to dive into the Porsche project; normally, this is Dad duty. We all scramble over the floor, brushing aside dust-bunnies and cracker crumbs until we rescue the all-important screw. But, screw it. This is my life at 40, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. These little voices begging me to stop working

on the computer — “You love the computer more than us!” — so that I can witness some new skit they have for me. Or a new house — which resembles a Dr. Seuss creation — carefully constructed out of three deserted shoeboxes for their pipe-cleaner people. Or the snake of cars winding through chair legs in the kitchen. I used to think I’d be an amazing sophisticate when I turned 40, probably too busy to put together a model car for my son. Don’t be too harsh. Forty sounded so out there — I imagined I would be this better-spoken, betteroccupied, better-disciplined, better-dressed woman. By 40, I’d actually feel a daily sense of accomplishment, enjoying a life where I was leading the agenda, not reacting to strawberry jam stains on my daughter’s favorite white shirt that needs to be perfect for school tomorrow. There’d be strict work time carved out for writing great stories, captivating articles. Shouldn’t you find yourself concentrating on things of weighty significance by 40? “Mom! We have eighty-eight cars. With the Porsche we have eighty-nine!” my daughter shouts triumphantly. How the heck can one family have so many cars? Clearly, I wasn’t entirely right about how age changes a person’s life. The scene of 89 cars in the kitchen says so. There’s quite a lot going on as I hit this milestone birthday, and much of it is sweetly familiar. It’s good to discover that, for now, time mercifully allows change to happen less drastically than I’d imagined. I’m glad I’m sitting here in jeans. After all, I’m dressed appropriately for concentrating on things of weighty significance — the kids, and yes, the model car. A sense of accomplishment? You bet. My little clients are happy, even if I couldn’t get the darn headlights attached. Kathryn Streeter is a freelance writer who’s somehow found time between putting model cars together to write articles for The Washington Post and other publications.
