It’s important to keep history alive, for our children and future generations, by sharing what we know about the people, places and ideas that have shaped the world as we know it. In an effort to do just that, there’s a new exhibit opening on Saturday, February 4 at the Museum of Discovery and Science. Lost Egypt: Ancient Secrets, Modern Science takes museum-goers of all ages on an interactive journey revealing how archaeologists use modern science and technology to uncover and understand the ancient civilization of Egypt.

BONDING RECONNECT WITH YOUR PARTNER—
without breaking the bank
I recently read about a local couple who celebrated their 75th anniversary surrounded by their six children and multiple grandchildren. As a couple together for a third of that time and right in the thick of childrearing, I wondered how they did it. After becoming parents, we get so wrapped up in the day to day that many of us forget about nurturing that part of our relationship. Jane Kahle, a licensed clinical professional counselor says, “A couple should look at their marriage as their first born.” Just as you would not disregard your child when another comes along, Kahle urges parents not to overlook their marriage. Establishing a regular date with your partner will help you to stay connected. Too often, parents forgo a much needed date night, choosing to spend their time and money on their children. Kahle advises couples to not always put their marriage last. “Time for a couple with young children is the hardest priority for a young family to fill,

especially when finances are stretched. Finding time to be away can be hard, but a date that continues to happen shows the bond between the couple is important.” In today’s economy, it can be difficult to keep the family budget in mind when planning your date. A couple may spend $100 on a simple dinner-and-a-movie date, not including the babysitter. Don’t let that stop you. Spending time together is the goal—not how much money you spend. Here are five ways you can plan a fantastic date without breaking the bank.
1
Support the Local Arts in Your Area
Head Outdoors
Check out local colleges, community centers and libraries for a variety of low-cost performances. At Broward College’s Bailey Hall, see how love finds a way even in the harshest of environments, with a spectacular orchestral production of the award-winning documentary March of the Penguins, on Saturday, February 25. Tickets start at $13 per adult. You can also find a host of concerts at indoor and outdoor venues throughout the county. Make a night of it by reviewing the show over coffee and dessert. Or put on your dancing shoes for a night of live music and beachside dancing from 7-9pm on Tuesday, February 7 at the Main Beach Parking Lot in Deerfield Beach.
Volunteer Together Rekindle your love for one another by showing kindness to strangers. Find a charity or cause that you both want to support and ask where you can help. Not sure where to start? Check out HandsOnBroward.org where you can find a lengthy list of local non-profit organizations seeking your help. Try working in an animal shelter, running a tent at a fundraising event, or serving in a soup kitchen. The experience you share may turn into a lifelong commitment.
3
Be a Tourist in Your Hometown
No matter what the season, there is plenty to do outside. Take a stroll along Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, head to a nature center with a picnic, or go for a paddle at one of Broward County’s parks that offer canoe and rowboat rentals. Looking for a unique way to celebrate Valentine’s Day? Head to Miramar Pineland on February 14 for a night hike where you and your loved one can spend quality time strolling hand-in-hand. The hike takes place from 6-7pm and the cost is $5 per person. A lowkey activity doesn’t bust the budget, and allows you to focus on what’s important, each other.

4
Grab your camera and head out to see the sights. Every town has tourist attractions in the form of statues, historic buildings and natural occurrences. Take turns snapping pictures of each other in front of the landmarks that are part of your community. The 10-foot tall I LOVE YOU sculpture outside the Young At Art Museum in Davie is a great place to capture the moment. Enjoy a restaurant crawl for two by stopping at several restaurants in town to try a specialty item from each menu.
Window Shop
5
Browse the aisles of a flea market, downtown area or your local mall. Hold hands like a new couple while you search for great bargains or dream about larger purchases. Throw pennies in the fountain or listen to the music of local performers. Enjoy a snack from a food vendor and find a good spot to people watch. Take a picture in a photo booth as a memento from your date.

Decision Vision RAISING KIDS TO MAKE WISE CHOICES BY MALIA JACOBSON
W
hether you’re helping your toddler select a snack or your teenager choose a college, guiding good decisions is central to parenting. But raising kids who make confident, wise choices can seem like a challenge — especially when your eight-year-old insists on wearing shorts in freezing weather, or your middle schooler repeatedly chooses junk food over veggies. Rest assured that an occasional poor choice is normal, even expected; in fact, making bad decisions is an important way for children to learn. But it’s also possible to encourage good decisionmaking, from toddlerhood through the teen years. Read on for age-by-age tips on helping kids choose well. EARLY YEARS 0-5: MIRROR MIRROR For parents of toddlers and preschoolers, encouraging freedom of choice is a well-known parenting rule of thumb: Asking your child whether he’d like water or milk, or whether he’d like to wear the green shirt or the blue shirt, helps exercise decision-making muscles, fosters confidence, and squashes power struggles. But many parents don’t know that simply mirroring a child’s statements can also help build and reinforce decision-making confidence, says Aida Vazin, a licensed marriage and family therapist. To put this into practice, listen for your little one’s statements about his opinions, and then reflect those statements back to him without embellishment. “For example, if a child says ‘I like green,’ the parent should repeat in a very matter-of-fact tone, ‘you like green,’ without turning the statement into a question,” says Vazin. “This gives the child the feeling of being heard and understood and highlights the choices the child is already making — and it’s a great confidence-booster for the child.” ELEMENTARY YEARS 6-12: BALANCING ACT Grade-schoolers are beginning to want more control over their daily lives, but many parents struggle to let go of the decisionmaking reins, leading to power struggles. It’s all about balance: Research suggests that a balance between independent decisionmaking and parental authority yields better outcomes for kids. Meg Hill, a licensed professional counselor and parenting coach, agrees: “As a parent, I often remind myself that it’s my kids’ job to become more independent from me. Between the ages of 6 and 12 it’s important for parents to increase responsibility along with choices, within a framework,” she says. So a child could begin to make her own lunches, selecting from a checklist of healthy foods provided by the parent, choose which after-school activities to pursue, or decide whether to do chores before or after school. Don’t let go of the reins completely, though: “Parents should still have significant oversight of time management, as well as online activity,” says Hill. TEEN YEARS 13-18: CAUSE AND EFFECT Flexing decision-making muscles helps them grow stronger, so making choices on a regular basis is vital for teens. Parents can foster long-term learning and growth by helping teenagers

begin to recognize the connections between present-day choices and future results. Encourage this type of personal reflection with a little Greek philosophy: “For teenagers, the best approach to really boost decision-making skills is to do what’s called Socratic questioning: Asking questions that are neutral and do not give judgment. For example: ‘What was important for you about that decision?’, or ‘What have you learned from this experience?’” says Vazin. “Rather than shaming, the parents are teaching the core life skill of understanding results and consequences of actions.” When teens begin looking toward the future, more confident decisions will emerge — and your teen just might develop a love of philosophy in the process. Malia Jacobson is an award-winning health and parenting journalist and mom of three confident decision makers.

To Tell the Truth COMPUTING THE CREDIBLE VS. INCREDULOUS BY CAROLYN JABS
H
ow do you make a good decision or form a sound opinion? For most adults, the answer is obvious. Find the best information you can from sources that have proved themselves to be reliable in the past. For young people, things may not be as clear. By age 18, it’s estimated that 88% get much of their news from what’s shared on Facebook and other social media. Unfortunately, many kids aren’t able to evaluate what they find according to a highly publicized study from researchers at Stanford University. “Many assume that because young people are fluent in social media they are equally savvy about what they find there,” notes Professor Sam Wineburg, lead author of the report. “Our work shows the opposite.” Middle schoolers didn’t understand the difference between reported news and “sponsored content.” High school students assumed that an unattributed photo proved the truth of a story. And college students couldn’t detect the bias in a tweet. So what should parents do? Social media means that children — and adults — are becoming information sources for each other, so we need to take on some of the tasks that used to be done by editors. Start by talking to your children about what deserves to be shared online. Point out that false and biased information comes from many sources — deceptive advertising, satirical websites or organizations with an agenda. And then there’s “click bait” — tidbits so astonishing, outrageous or implausible that people click and share without thinking. These so-called stories are created simply to generate revenue. The more clicks, the more revenue. Anyone who shares one of these items is essentially letting an unscrupulous person make money off them and their friends. No one, including kids, likes to be duped by bad information. To help your child develop the savvy to evaluate what he or she finds online, talk regularly about how important it is to be skeptical and ask the following questions: IS IT WORTH READING? According to a study at Columbia University, 59 percent of links shared on Twitter have never
20
B R O W A R D F A M I LY L I F E
| browardfamilylife.com
actually been clicked. Kids show respect for their friends by sharing only things that they were willing to read or watch. Fake news sites in particular count on mindless sharing to make more money. WHO STANDS BEHIND IT? Encourage kids to track stories back to the website where they originated. What’s the purpose of the website? How are they funded? How do they pay contributors or staff? Are they trying to sell a product or promote an agenda? To answer these questions, kids may need to do a little detective work. Check the “About Us” page and scroll down the home page to find out who owns the copyright to the material. Look at the URL. Some fake news sites reel in the unsuspecting with addresses that are deceptively close to legitimate sites. Point out extensions — .gov is a government agency, .edu is colleges and universities and .ru is a site that originates in Russia. (A complete extension list is available at Webopedia, tinyurl.com/48t5r). Lists of sites that play fast and loose with the facts are available from Snopes, a website that has been debunking Internet hoaxes for a long time (tinyurl.com/zjzvuf2) and by Melissa Zimdar, a media professor at Merrimack College (tinyurl.com/jtrnbz8). Another website, realorsatire.com allows you to plug in URL’s to find out whether an article comes from a fake or biased website. WHAT’S THE SOURCE? Help children understand sources by talking about who they trust at school. Some kids are genuine
authorities in different areas — they know the stats for the sports team or can tell you when assignments are due. Others have a reputation for spreading rumors or even telling lies. The same thing is true online. A story is worth sharing only if it comes from reliable sources. The sources should be named and, in most cases, there should be more than one. They should be people who are qualified to have an opinion because they’ve studied the topic, done research, or have relevant experience. CAN THE STORY BE CONFIRMED? Anyone can say anything online. Teach kids to Google stories and, for that matter, authors to find out whether anyone else finds them credible. A story that appears in one place or is based on a single tweet should be discounted. You can also point older kids to websites that help differentiate good information from bogus claims. Healthnewsreview.org evaluates stories about medical research. Politifact.com and Factcheck.org try to verify claims by politicians. Tineye.com helps users track down photographs to see if they’ve been manipulated. WHAT’S THE TONE? Many online stories are designed to trigger strong feelings such as fear, anger or even hatred. Encourage your child to pay attention to words that manipulate or inflame emotions. Point out that people should be especially careful about sharing stories of this kind. The question should always be: will sharing this make the world a better place? Obviously, much of what’s shared on social media isn’t serious, and kids don’t need to apply this level of scrutiny to animal videos or other playful posts. At the same time, children — and adults — should be aware that they and others are using the information they get through social media to make decisions about social, political and health issues. As the Stanford researchers put it, “Never have we had so much information at our fingertips. Whether this bounty will make us smarter and better informed or more ignorant and narrow-minded will depend on our awareness of this problem and our

They’ve learned independence, tried activities that expanded their selfconfidence, and managed to survive on food they sometimes didn’t like. Most of all, though, they have been

They’ve had to get along with kids they didn’t like and some that didn’t like them. Because of round-theclock time with each other, sometimes the dislikes turned into likes. friendships my eldest has with his roadtrip buddies, it is apparent that camp is helping them gain the skills to find deep relationships. Regarding that road trip, Benjamin and his band of merry men managed to come home in one piece. They made some mistakes, but also learned from an experience no parent can ever really teach. As we did with overnight camp, we had followed the belief that the best thing a parent can do is launch our kids, then let them learn on their own. Of course, it helps when they have good friends to go along for the ride. Gregory Keer is an award-winning

Kid Crush
PINT-SIZED ROMEOS, SIXTH GRADE JULIETS BY RICK EPSTEIN
Valentine’s Day is approaching, so it’s time for my annual report on young love. But the story begins 10 years ago... Danny, the 4-year-old neighbor boy, was sitting in our yard bawling like a baby while my daughter Wendy, then only 2 years old, sat a few feet away, ignoring the wailing boy, scratching lines in the ground with a short stick. All concern, I asked, “Danny, what’s wrong?” “W-w-wendy won’t let me go ho-ho-home!” he sobbed. “Of course you can go home,” I said. Wendy was gazing up into a tree. Danny gave her an accusing look and scurried away. I asked, “What was that all about?” She would only say, “Him a big baby.” Wendy ought to know. She had been married to him three or four times. Whenever Wendy’s big sisters got bored, they’d find Wendy and Danny, dress them up and marry them to each other. I never witnessed these ceremonies, but I’ve seen a photo. Wendy wore socks on her hands to simulate gloves and held a bouquet of weeds. For a bridal train, she wore one of her mother’s half-slips on her head. Danny had no approximation of a tuxedo, but the big girls wanted a groom with some dash, so they’d stuffed him into an old Halloween tiger suit. With tail lying limp on the ground, he looked unhappy and overwhelmed while Wendy seemed to be enjoying the game. When Danny started school, he left Wendy two grades behind and never looked back. Now Wendy is 12 and has discovered Boys. And like Christopher Columbus with Alzheimer’s, she shouts the discovery to her crew every few minutes. Although the sixth-grade girls have gone boy crazy, the boys in our little town haven’t noticed. They are interested in skateboards, sports and video games. They would be just as likely to hold hands with a girl as they would dress their cats in baby bonnets and wheel them around in strollers. Apparently there are two or three boys in neighboring towns who are interested in girls. They are like Florida real-estate speculators of 100 years ago, early and few, rushing into what promises to soon become a crowded and hotly contested field. A raised eyebrow or a sly smile from one of these precocious playboys can send waves of jealousy, pleasure or outrage coursing through the girl population. Wendy is as hysterical as the rest. Based upon what I’ve heard her shrieking into the phone, she was “going out with” a boy

named Tom at day-camp last summer. Don’t be misled by the term “going out with”; it has no literal meaning. It signifies only a commitment as thin as morning mist, but not as lasting. One of Wendy’s advisers told her that Tom was about to break up with her, which triggered a pre-emptive dumping by Wendy. The good news is that because each of these boys is responsible for the emotional excitement of a couple dozen girls, they don’t have time for deep and damaging relationships. Even so, this dizzy whirl of romance without affection, and friendship without loyalty, seems an unwholesome parody of decent human relationships. We’ve tried to interest Wendy in something besides clothes, makeup and pint-sized ladies’ men, but she appears to be obsessively training for an extreme sport — one that is rougher than ice hockey, messier than mud wrestling, and more brutal than bull-fighting. And when she makes varsity, trust me guys, you do not want to be wearing a tiger suit. Rick Epstein is the father of three girls, and author of Rookie Dad and The Right Number of Kids.
