Play It Safe This Summer Our family cares about your family, just like you do. So as you enjoy the summer sun and fun of South Florida, we invite you and your family to keep these safety tips in mind.
IN THE SUN • Wear SPF 30 or higher sunscreen. • Seek shade during midday hours. • Protect your face and eyes; wear a hat and sunglasses. • Wear a beach coverup or long sleeves for extra protection.
IN THE HEAT • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water. • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing. • Avoid hard exercise, work or play during hottest part of day. • Never leave children or pets in your vehicle.
IN THE WATER • Swim in designated beach areas with lifeguards. • Wear a life jacket; a floatie doesn’t count. • Never leave a child unattended near water. • Get swim lessons for the whole family.

Holy Heroes, Batman! MODS INTERACTIVE EXHIBIT EXPLORES THE SUPERHERO UNIVERSE
I
f you’ve been to the movies anytime lately, you know that superheroes are dominating the big screen. Leave it to the Museum of Discovery and Science to help us understand why, while at the same time helping kids to discover the hero within themselves. The Hall of Heroes traveling exhibit is about more than comic book characters, though. It also delves into the worlds of human heroes like crime-fighters and spies and their gadgets. Exploring our fascination with the superhero phenomenon — and what it really means to be a hero — the exhibit also lets visitors of all ages test their heroic abilities via challenging interactive stations.
At the museum through Sept. 2, Hall of Heroes also features a 1966 George Barris Batmobile interactive batcave environment, interactive dioramas of heroes in American culture from comics to radio and beyond, and KEVA plank-building stations with a 1989 KEVA Batmobile. There are unique photo ops, too. For youngsters who want more superhero in their summer, MODS is also holding a Superhero Training Academy on Saturday mornings through Aug. 10. The fun-filled event for the entire family features a private exploration of the Hall of Heroes exhibit, KaBOOM! Superhero Edition Science Show, a superhero meet and greet and gadget-making, and a screening of “Super Power Dogs” in the AutoNation IMAX Theater. MODS is at 401 SW Second St., Fort Lauderdale. FAMILY FUN
FAVORITE PARK OR PLAYGROUND
T.Y. Park
Sure, the Margaritaville Resort has brought a bit of an upscale sheen to Hollywood Beach, but it’s still pretty much the same great funky destination for a flipflop family outing. The Broadwalk enhances the beach-day experience with a variety of international eateries and shops just steps off the sand, where the little ones can frolic under the watchful gaze of Mom and Dad chilling at an al fresco table with an ocean view. The two-plus miles of brick-paved promenade are perfect for breathing in the sea air by jogging, biking, rollerblading or simply strolling. It’s also home to two parks, a splash fountain and the annual Candy Cane Parade, one of the country’s longestrunning holiday parades. Mandee Adler of Hollywood says, “Family-friendly, clean, a lot to do for those who don’t want to just sit on the beach.” The beach itself is so clean it’s annually certified by the national Clean Beaches Council. There’s also the 56-acre North Beach Park, with fishing piers and a tower. Rachel Kaplan of Hollywood says she likes “the splash pad, pizza and free live music at the bandshell.” Judy Klar of Hollywood says, “Love that there are no cars by the beach.” 954-921-3500, www.visithollywoodfl.org
FAVORITE PLACE TO SWIM & SPLASH
Quiet Waters Park This splash playground of a park is aptly named, except perhaps for the “quiet” part — because Quiet Waters is a great place for making waves. Ski Rixen USA offers cable water-skiing, boarding and/or slalom-skiing to families with children 7 years and older and their grandparents, as well as lessons in the controlled environment of its large lake. Splash Adventure is a child-sized water park, with a pool depth ranging from zero at its edges to 12 inches at its deepest. There are slides, tunnels, water curtains, and a huge bucket that empties onto the kids below at regular intervals — and lifeguards are always on duty. Woofing Waters Dog Park features separate areas to cool off larger and smaller dogs with spray hydrants, shower nozzles and a spraying water loop. As for quieter water activities, fishing is permitted from the shores of several lakes and the marina offers boats to rent for a peaceful float. 401 S. Sugar Sand Park
Here’s the rare park where there’s just about as much to do indoors as there is outdoors. Within Sugar Sand’s 132 acres, you’ll find the Children’s Science Explorium and the Willow Theatre, both located in the Community Center, and the Field House, a 14,000-square-foot gymnasium. The exhibits of the hands-on Explorium make the physical sciences come alive for kids 5-12 years old. There are also camps and programs like the Explorium Science Squad and Friday Night at the Museum. For more active scientific pursuits, the trilevel Science Playground is just outside. The 155-seat theatre stages a variety of productions, such as the family-friendly Summer Children Series, featuring The Little Mermaid’s Adventure, on July 7, and Community Cabaret, where on July 24 residents and nonresidents ages 12 and up can take the stage to show off their talents. The Community Center is busy with classes, programs and events. And, of course, there are the more-expected outdoor amenities — nature trails, pavilions, athletic fields, hockey rink. There’s even a carousel — and it’s all just a few minutes north of the Broward County line. 300 S. Military Trail, Boca Raton, 561-347-3900, www.sugarsandpark.org TH

Hollywood Beach
The summertime gem of this 138-acre Hollywood park is Castaway Island, an enjoyable spot to beat the heat whatever your age. There’s a water playground for children 5 and under, and for the older kids, a water park with slides, dumping buckets and other wet-and-wild diversions. And kids and adults young and old can enjoy the lagoon/swimming pool with zero-degree entry and a waterfall. After 3pm, you can take the plunge for a reduced entry fee. If you like water activities but not getting soaked, there’s a large lake with a lovely geyser-like fountain and a marina for boat rentals and fishing. Of course, there’s plenty to do on dry land, too, including walking, jogging, skating or biking (rentals available) on a two-mile loop of paved pathways, picnicking in one of its many picnic shelters, or turning your kids loose in the large playground. There are also the customary sports facilities as well as a 61-site RV campground and a primitive camping site. And with the park’s expansive tree canopy, you have it made in the shade. 3300 N. FAVORITE SOUTH FLORIDA FAMILY RESORT
Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort Of course, you don’t have to be a Jimmy Buffett “parrothead” to enjoy this gleaming resort themed to the super-chill lifestyle of the singer’s classic hit, but you may be by the time you leave. Since it opened four years ago, the $175 million resort has managed to both polish and blend with Hollywood Beach’s funky-Florida vibe. Just off the Broadwalk, Pool Paradise is a palm-shaded, islandinspired recreation and entertainment spot with two unique pools, a waterslide and a FlowRider® Double for surfing without having to set foot in the surf just steps away. The Parakeets Kid’s Club offers games, crafts and activities daily with trained counselors. But you don’t have to be from out of town to enjoy Margaritaville. For locals, it’s also an inviting destination for a relaxing staycation in one of 349 rooms, an indulgent night on the town or a casual or deluxe meal at one of eight dining and entertainment venues. So, whether resident or guest, you can kick back, sip that frozen concoction and take a bite of a cheeseburger in paradise. 1111 N. FAVORITE LOCAL ADVENTURE
Broward Parks
Everglades Holiday Park When you hear the word “Everglades,” does the image of an alligator snap into your mind? If so, this is the place for you. It’s the rare attraction where you can see the jaw-dropping reptiles both in their natural habitat via state-of-the-art airboat tours and up-close in live shows featuring TV’s Gator Boys Alligator Rescue team. And if gators aren’t your thing, this is still Broward’s go-to family-fun destination for an up-close glimpse of the eons-old River of Grass ecosystem. The newest attraction, Animal Encounters, gives visitors a touchy-feely experience with furry and scaly inhabitants of the 29-acre wildlife preserve, working park and rescue operation. It’s also the place for fishing the ’Glades from a Jon boat, the dock or a professionally guided tour and everything from boats to bait are available. 21940 Griffin Rd., Fort Lauderdale, 954-434-8111, www.evergladesholidaypark.com
South Florida is famous for its beaches, but the nearly 50 Broward parks offer a staggering assortment of fun and educational diversions to engage residents and visitors without their ever setting foot on the sand (except, of course, for those beachfront parks where setting foot on the sand is part of the fun). For example, at T.Y. Park and several others, they can take a hayride and toast s’mores over a campfire. Or they can gaze at the stars from the huge telescopes of Fox Observatory at Markham Park. Or they can tee up at C.B. Smith Park’s driving ranges or mini golf courses. Within their 6,500 acres, county parks also offer four lush nature centers, 12 pristine natural areas, several water parks, dog parks, campgrounds, a target range, a multipurpose stadium, mountain bike trails, horse trails, a velodrome, an educational farm and stables, fishing and boating sites, and much more. And the price is right, too, as admission to regional parks is always free for children age 5 and younger, and on weekdays, it’s free for everyone else. On weekends and holidays, it only costs $1.50 per person. www.broward.org/parks

Butterfly World Hold out your arm here and within minutes it could be alighted on by beautiful butterflies. With about 20,000 of the most enchanting flying insects from around the globe flitter-fluttering about, Butterfly World is a natural wonderland and the world’s largest butterfly park, right here in our own backyard. “My daughters love it there,” says Adam Vivadelli of Fort Lauderdale. “We go a few times a year. They love to be able to hold the butterflies on their hand.” Located in Tradewinds Park, it’s home to three open-air butterfly aviaries, six free-flight aviaries for hundreds of exotic birds and hummingbirds, an interactive lorikeet encounter, a butterfly museum and even a Bug Zoo. Waterfalls, botanical gardens, passion vines, and roses complete the natural habitat, and educational tours provide an up-front look at the miracle of metamorphosis. 3600 W. It’s definitely a day-trip away for Broward residents, but once you’ve arrived at this 600-plus-acre park, TH T R you’ll have the thrill of staring face-to-face — through E the windshield, of course — at lions, giraffes, zebras, rhinos and many more of the over 900 wild animals from six continents that roam here. After driving slowly through the four-mile safari, you can stretch your legs at Safari World, a walk-through safari and amusement park. There, you’ll find an Animal Theater and exhibits, a petting zoo, bird-feeding and giraffe-feeding, a pontoon boat tour and paddle boats, miniature golf, a flying elephant ride, a safari maze, water slides and a splash playground, a restaurant, picnic sites, a campground and more. When Lion Country Safari opened in 1967, it was the first drive-through safari park in the country, and it remains the only attraction of its kind in the state. 2003 Lion Country Safari Rd., West Palm Beach, 561-793-1084, www.lioncountrysafari.com

FAVORITE SOUTH FLORIDA MUSUEM
Museum Of Discovery And Science With most museums, visitors enter a building to learn about the world outside. This museum brings the world inside — at least part of our little piece of it. For example, a two-story exhibit presents one of the largest living captive Atlantic coral reefs on public display, featuring hundreds of living and replicated plants, animals and habitats. Visitors can board a 20-person airboat for a simulated ride into the Everglades. North American river otters in their own indoor/outdoor habitat — complete with swimming pool and waterfall — can be observed as they play underwater on the first floor or from above from the second floor. And in the hurricane simulator, visitors can brave the rush of hurricane-force winds. The museum also goes back outside in the recently added Science Park, a play zone for scientific experimentation. Inside or out at MODS, learning is always fun — such as in its current traveling exhibit, Hall of Heroes, which brings guests inside a different world: superheroes, crime-getters, gadgets and spies. The immersive experience is on display through Sept. 2. 401 SW Second St., Fort Lauderdale, 954-467-6637, www.mods.org

Las Olas Art Fair What began as a small block festival decades ago has grown into one of the top art events in the country — an annual celebration of art, artists, art-lovers young and old… not to mention those who come purely for an eye-boggling stroll down Fort Lauderdale’s signature boulevard. On three weekends during “The Season,” the Las Olas Art Fair offers onlookers the opportunity to peruse the works of over 200 national artists, mingle with them, discuss their techniques and inspirations, take their works home or even commission a piece. Life-size sculptures, spectacular paintings, one-of-a-kind jewelry, stunning photography, creative ceramics and much more blend with the sounds of live music and aromas of edible treats to turn the affair into a colorful kaleidoscope of imagery and sensations. Four-legged art-lovers are welcome as well. The 32nd annual events are Oct. 19-20 this year, and Jan. 4-5 and March 7-8 next year. Food, friends and video games — possibly the perfect combination of fun for a tween or teen. Whether you go as a group or meet up with friends, this mega-arcade keeps kids – and even parents – entertained. That was the vision about four decades ago when Dave, an arcade owner, and Buster, a restaurateur, joined forces to put both businesses under one roof. Since then, Dave & Buster’s has grown into a go-to entertainment destination for all. The Hollywood location has a range of games including classics like Pac-Man and Skee-Ball to more modern titles and virtual reality experiences within its Million Dollar Midway. A Winner’s Circle is where players redeem their tickets for cool toys and high-tech gadgets, and the locale also houses a full-service restaurant. “It’s a really fun place for older kids because they play and eat in arcade with their friends and have lots of fun,” says Ana Castillo of Tamarac. 3000 Oakwood Blvd., Hollywood, 954-923-5505, www.daveandbusters.com

Texas Roadhouse This family restaurant is known for its steaks and ribs, made-from-scratch sides and fresh-baked bread. But it’s also famous for its Legendary Kid’s Night and “Kids Meal” coins, redeemable for a free meal from its kids menu for 12 and younger. At the Miramar location, Kid’s Nights are Tuesdays from 4:30-8pm, when any of six kids meals (excepting three Ranger Meal offerings) is $1.99 and comes with a kid-sized soft drink, milk or juice and choice of one side. There’s also arts and crafts, a balloon artist and mascot Andy Armadillo. “Different, unique, delicious food made in front of your eyes.” That’s how reader Giseel Hurtado of Dania Beach sums up the Benihana experience. It’s the show that makes dining distinctive at America’s first Japanese teppanyaki restaurant, as highly trained chefs chop and cook your meal with intricate knife work and theatrics on table-side teppanyaki grills (the flat-surface, steel grills often confused with hibachi barbecue grills). Their most famous trick — the onion volcano — is complemented by an Asian-style cuisine of steaks, seafood and sushi. For the 12-and-under set, there is a Kabuki Kids program that celebrates members’ birthdays with a free souvenir mug with the order of a Kabuki Kids meal. The chain takes pride in its community commitment, as its teams donate more than 2,000 hours a year serving meals to the hungry, mentoring kids in need, cleaning up parks and more. First Watch Reader Rachel Kaplan of Hollywood describes it this way: “Healthy options for kids that they actually eat, and great food for us, too.” Add that to the over 200 accolades this daytime-eatery chain has received for its traditional and innovative breakfasts, brunches and lunches. Traditional — like made-fromscratch pancakes and waffles, fresh salads and sandwiches. And innovative — like the new Asian Pork Belly Breakfast Bowl and Lemon Blueberry Quinoa Pancakes, and the old-favorite Chickichangas (think Chimichanga with eggs and spicy chicken). There’s even a juice bar.Named for the term describing a ship crew’s first shift of the day, First Watch starts you off with a pot — not cup — of coffee, as well as complimentary newspapers. Amazon ownership has brought some changes to Whole Foods — such as its Echo smart devices for sale, recently lowered prices on produce, and special discounts and free delivery for Prime members. But what hasn’t changed is it’s still the world’s leader in natural and organic foods, with almost 500 stores in the United States and the United Kingdom. Whole Foods Market only sells products that meet its own quality standards for being “natural,” which it defines as minimally processed foods free of hydrogenated fats and artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners and preservatives. The store also does not intend to sell meat or milk from cloned animals or their offspring. And its bounty of prepared-food offerings — eclectic salad and hot bars, sandwiches, pizzas and casseroles — are a special bonus for health-conscious shoppers. For any kind of hospital stay, nothing beats privacy — and that goes double for maternity patients. At Memorial West’s Family Birthplace, all of the rooms are private — with private bathrooms and the added features of a sleeper sofa or recliner for partners, a TV and Wi-Fi access. There are 12 labor/delivery/recovery suites, 26 postpartum rooms and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that has been providing extra care for neonate babies since 1996. The level II NICU also features a free, secure NICVIEW webcam system, which lets families see their newborn in the NICU from a computer or mobile device. Tours of the Birthplace are offered frequently so families can get comfortable with the facility before the due date. Classes including Infant CPR and Safety, Prepared Childbirth, Breastfeeding, Baby Care and Boot Camp for New Dads are also offered before and after baby is born. 703 N. Sawgrass Mills FAVORITE STORE FOR KIDS’ STUFF
Denny’s This is the kind of store a child can grow up with. It begins even before birth with a full-service layette department and continues on up to a complete camp department for when the kids are old enough to sleep away — and beyond. Described as a “store within a store,” the layette department offers moms-to-be knowledgeable specialists, who suggest needed items based on recommendations from manufacturers and other Denny’s customers. The personal service also extends to camp necessities, as kids and their parents are personally guided through a shopping list from clothes to trunks to towels. A family-run business for over 40 years, Denny’s is a favorite for the latest in back-to-school fashions as well as the basics like sleepwear, and even accommodates customers with one-on-one appointments with a sales associate. Plus, for kids that are so inclined, there are Instagram modeling opportunities on the Denny’s website. 801 S. Mermaid Cove
IP
This out-of-the-ordinary shop somehow seems perfectly situated in sea-swept South Florida. Mermaid Cove is, yes, all things mermaid, featuring treasures inspired by the ocean and a variety of mermaid-themed items. Naturally that includes swimming tails for mermaid wanna-bes of all ages. The shop, which opened in 2018, features an event space with a throne for mermaid celebrations ranging from kids’ parties to bachelorette to-dos. In addition to housewares, jewelry and a large selection of adult clothes, the store sells baby and toddler stuff, all with a mermaid theme, as well as products for younger children, including soft toys and art kits. On the website, you can subscribe to receive a monthly Mermaid Cove Crate, full of age-appropriate treasures. With events and live mermaid appearances, Mermaid Cove is more than just a store — it’s local mermaid headquarters. 1645 SE Third Court ,#102, Deerfield Beach, 754-757-776, www.mermaidcoveshop.com TH
There’s something for just about everyone here — the country’s largest outlet and value retail shopping destination — for international tourists as well as locals. Its over 350 stores include outlet locations for the bargain-hunter, as well as the fashionistas who flock to The Colonnade Outlets for over 70 luxury brand outlets not found anywhere else in South Florida. If there’s something you’re shopping for — whether fashion and jewelry, electronics, sporting equipment, beauty products, home accessories, toys and more — it’s a good bet you can find it at Sawgrass Mills. And for dining and entertainment, there are dozens of options, from fast-food to upscale cuisine, and a movie theater with IMAX. Also, as reader Shanti Bruce points out, the carousel is perfect for the little ones. 12801 W. Sunrise Blvd., Sunrise, 954-846-2300, www.simon.com/mall/sawgrass-mills

FAVORITE KIDS FUN AT A SHOPPING DESTINATION
Aquarium At Bass Pro Shop This 30,000-gallon aquarium is one of the area’s most captivating, free, indoor diversions for youngsters, shopping destination or not. The younger ones especially stand transfixed by — or run around following — all the different varieties of native fish, from Largemouth bass to freshwater eels, that are swimming around the boulder-encased aquarium. The running waterfall and lifelike natural wildlife reproductions create a little outdoor tableau that stands out inside the huge sporting-goods mecca but seems just right for a place called Outdoor World. “You can spend time watching all the fish swim around while the rest of your party shops,” says reader Stephanie Soto of Weston. “They also have a lot of their toys out for kids to play with before buying. There is a lot of entertainment for just a store.” And Wednesdays at 6:30pm and Saturdays at 2:30pm, the kids can watch — and may be called on to help — the store’s pros feed the fish. 200 Gulf Stream Way, Dania Beach, 954-929-7710, www.basspro.com

FAVORITE STORE FOR KIDS’ DECOR
IKEA IKEA’s got you covered for just about any furniture and furnishings for kids, from the day you bring them home until they’re almost all grown up. Perhaps it’s not surprising that the Scandinavian chain is a go-to retailer for kids furniture — it was founded by a kid of only 17 years of age. (Fun fact: IKEA is an acronym for its founder’s name, Ingvar Kamprad; Elmtaryd, his farm’s name; and the nearby village of Agunnaryd.) Of course, IKEA has come a long, long way since its 1943 beginnings in rural Sweden and its early days as a catalog service. Today, with its “for-the-people” concept and 422 stores in more than 50 markets, IKEA is virtually synonymous with the word “furniture.” As reader Elsa Colon of West Park puts it: “Huge! They have everything for the home.” Plus, IKEA is extra family-friendly. Most stores feature family parking spots, a baby-care area, baby food, microwaves, shopping strollers and a free supervised play area for kids between 4 and 10 years old. Called Småland, it features a Swedish forest atmosphere — of course. 151 NW 136 Ave., Sunrise, 888-888-4532, www.ikea.com

PETS FAVORITE GROOMER
FAVORITE VETERINARIAN/HOSPITAL
Banfield Animal Hospitals We wouldn’t necessarily call it a dog-eat-dog industry, but there are certainly a lot of competing animal hospitals for Broward pet owners to choose from. Thanks to its size and accessibility, however, Banfield stands out. With over 900 clinics, the 60-year-old company is the country’s largest privately owned veterinary practice. There are over a dozen locations in Broward alone, many inside PetSmart stores. With a caliber of service and professionalism you might associate with a medical facility, the hospitals help keep you from barking up the wrong tree for your pet’s health-care needs by offering introductory exams and flexible Optimum Wellness Plans. Covering all your pet’s preventive care with one package, the plans include unlimited office visits, routine vaccinations, comprehensive physical exams, diagnostic testing, product and service discounts and online access to your pet’s records. Banfield’s BARK program takes findings from the millions of pets treated annually by its vets, incorporates them into its practice and shares them with its customers through its patented PetWare® medical records software. 877-656-7146, www.banfield.com TH OR

Humane Society Of Broward County
“The best people on earth.” That’s how reader Elsa Colon of West Park describes the Humane Society. The nearly 7,000 dogs, cats and other furry friends adopted from there in a year would likely agree. While they wait, up to 300 of them at a time have air-conditioned accommodations in the 33,000 square-foot shelter — as well as access to full-time vet services. And when those special someones give that lucky pet a new home, they receive a $250 credit to a local VCA Animal Hospital for the first 14 days after adoption for a post-adoption check-up, treatments and even hospitalization. HSBC also offers a low-cost, walk-in only vaccination clinic, 9am-4:30pm Monday-Thursday, with four dog packages and two cat packages as well as individual vaccines and heartworm tests. Low-cost and free spay/neuter surgeries are also available at a custom portable unit, the first of its kind in the nation to be used for such procedures. Appointments can be made at the unit’s rotating county locations by calling 954-463-7729 or emailing spayneuter@hsbroward.com. 2070 Griffin Rd., Fort Lauderdale, 954-989-3977, www.humanebroward.com

PetSmart PetSmart is doggone serious about grooming. It takes a year to become a stylist at this leading pet store chain, including four weeks at a grooming academy and over 800 hours of hands-on grooming instruction that includes bathing, trimming and styling at least 200 dogs of all breeds and sizes — plus annual safety certification. PetSmart provides appointment services, which include full-service grooming and bathing, and walk-in services, which include nail trim and grind, PAWdicure, teeth brushing, ear cleaning and trimming. Express services are also offered, and some locations offer grooming and bathing services for cats, like nail trim, nail caps application and ear cleaning. Of course, grooming is just one of many reasons pet-owners frequent this one-stop shop for pets. Dog training and day-care, PetsHotel, and at many locations, Banfield Animal Hospitals complement a wide range of pet products and services. And since 1994, PetSmart Charities has granted over $400 million to pet-loving organizations throughout the country, contributing to the saving of over 8.5 million pets. www.petsmart.com
FAVORITE BOARDING FACILITY
Country Inn Pet Resort South Florida is a vacation paradise, and that goes for vacationers of the four-legged variety who stay at this top-dog getaway. Three of the resort’s eight acres are outdoor recreational areas, including two salt-chlorinated pools and even “a pawcuzzi.” There’s also an indoor turf area for rainy days. Designed in a country-style theme, private suites make pets feel at home with natural light, soothing music and access to a private outdoor area. Pets are taken out four times daily to exercise, play or just roam around. As reader Rebecca Noonan of Cooper City puts it: “Space, pools and Bruna!” She refers to Bruna Silva, who with Dr. Monica Silva is co-owner of the family-run resort. For emergencies or routine medical services, there’s an AAHA-accredited Animal Hospital on the grounds. Country Inn also offers doggy day-care, a private spa and grooming, as well as training provided by the handpicked professional trainers of TV’s “Dog Whisperer,” Cesar Millan. And the resort bills itself as South Florida’s only hurricane-proof pet boarding facility. 2100 S. Flamingo Rd., Fort Lauderdale, 954-424-6000, www.countryinnpetresort.com
FAVORITE DOG PARK
Hollywood Dog Beach There are few places that get your dog’s tail wagging as wildly as the beach will, and Hollywood Dog Beach, with its clean sand and uncluttered locale in North Beach Park, sees more than its share of wagging tails — only on weekends, though. The dog beach is open year-round 3-7 pm. During daylight savings time, the hours are 4-8 pm. Admission for city residents is $5/day per dog or $30 for a six-month pass. Non-residents pay double those prices. Good dog park etiquette is highly encouraged, but the beach is monitored by a park ranger just in case. Aggressive dogs are not tolerated, and all dogs must wear their rabies tag and respond to their owner, who must pick up after them. So bring your license as proof of residency — and don’t forget your pooper-scooper. Located one-half mile north of Sheridan Street, between Custer and Pershing streets, www.dboh.org

Woofing Waters At Quiet Waters Park TH
E TR
As its catchy name signifies, Woofing Waters is a park-full of fun for water-loving barkers. Situated on two acres at the northwest corner of the park, it is divided into two sections — one for bigger dogs and the other for more petite pooches. In the large-dog area, there’s a spray fire hydrant, a shower nozzle, an eight-nozzle line jet, and nearly 800 linear feet of hard-surface paths. For the smaller dogs, there’s also a shower nozzle and an eight-nozzle line jet, but they also get a water loop that shoots a variety of sprays to run through. Woofing Waters is closed from January-April and is open the rest of the year Mon-Sun, 8am-6pm. A gate fee of $1.50/person is assessed on weekends and holidays only, and children 5 and under are free. 401 S. Powerline Rd., Deerfield Beach, 954-357-5100 www.broward.org/parks

WORDS of wisdom
An Apology to Alexa WITH THREE KIDS, IT’S MAYBE NOT THE IDEAL HOME FOR AN ANSWER-BOT BY MALIA JACOBSON
A
lexa, let me start. I know you never wanted this. We appreciate you — there’s no question. Your un-boxing was a momentous day in our house. A robotic personal assistant with an unfailingly calm, melodious voice ever-ready to brief us on the day’s weather, keep track of my shopping list. And never, under any circumstances, issue gale-force sighs and pre-teen-style theatrical moans when faced with a simple request — you were a revelation. Pseudo-adult companionship? I’ll take it. The kids were beside themselves, too. They’d long been impressed by the several friends whose homes sported not one, but sometimes two or more of you. “Sophie has four Alexas, and we don’t even have one,” they’d said, always on high alert for even the slightest material injustice. After a few weeks of their heavy hints that you’d make us smarter, tidier and more fun, explaining Common Core long division and turning post-dinner cleanup into a dance party, I caved. But our home isn’t one you were designed to withstand. A sleek cylinder teeming with promise, you were meant to rest on a spotless marble slab next to a well-loved espresso machine or, at the very least, a Soda Stream. In this orderly world, you’d parse out the day’s headlines, intone the latest audio books and reign supreme over a thoughtfully designed smart home, orchestrating LED light bulbs and whisper-quiet ceiling fans and keeping the Prosecco chilled. Don’t feel bad, Alexa. I want to live there, too. Instead, you landed here, on a scuffed-up butcher block counter amid sippy-top lids and lunchboxes and half-eaten apples. Let’s be honest, lady — you weren’t prepared to field commands from a trio of shrieking counter-height humans from the moment your soothing blue light switched on. Is it possible to startle a robot? I think we did. Let’s give them credit: What the questions lack in subtlety or finesse, they make up for in sheer volume. “Play Katy Perry! No, not that song; the OTHER ONE! Tell us a joke, Alexa! When is it Christmas and why is it not Friday? And what’s Brexit? And say ‘poop!’ Say it AGAIN!” It’s always about poop, Alexa.

Can I offer you some advice? Boundaries. You’re a receptacle for demands, and children are by nature demanding. You’ll never bark: “MOM NEEDS A BREAK, I’M LOCKING THE BATHROOM” — and they sense that. Your endless well of good-natured compliance inspires an outpouring of absurd requests to which there is no end. Trust me on this one. You’re an answer-bot, and they want answers. So limits must be set. In a way, you’ve replaced me, but I don’t resent you. My jokes are lackluster at best and I never say “poop” as much or as emphatically as they’d like because there are only so many hours in the day. I’m human (not to brag) so I tire after a half-dozen rapid-fire queries with replies that rarely satisfy. That’s where you shine. Like a tireless, electronic Mom, you always supply answers, homework help and pleasant small talk. Alexa, I think we make a great team — I make dinner and you stand ready to order pizza if it all goes south. In time, the kids will learn that you’re more than just another female to order around. I’m pretty sure, anyway. Malia Jacobson is a nationally published health journalist. When she’s not writing, she’s chasing her three children… and now, trying to make Alexa feel at home.
