Safety keeps the fun in pool time. A fun day at the pool can quickly get drained away, especially when kids get caught up in the thrill of the moment and forget to be safe. Should an accident happen, HCA kid-friendly ERs are nearby. Our full-service hospitals are staffed with experienced doctors and nurses who handle all types of injuries. So, when your child needs expert emergency care, you can count on us to provide it 24/7.
Know and act upon these important pool safety tips: • Keep a close eye on your kids while they are in the pool. • Ensure your kids know where water is deep and shallow. • Have your kids stay away from pool drains. • Practice water safety skills like first aid, emergency response and CPR. • Make sure there is appropriate safety equipment near the pool, such as life rings, reaching poles and a first-aid kit.
To speak to a registered nurse or if you need a FREE physician referral, call Consult-A-Nurse® at 954-724-6349. Visit HCAEastFlorida.com for more information and average ER wait times. In an emergency, call 9-1-1.

Fun Out of the Sun MUSEUMS OFFER A PERFECT PLACE TO CHILL
T
he summer heat may be heavy but local museums are ideal places to play, discover and keep your cool at the same time. Young At Art Museum offers a refreshing respite for families who like to foster creative play in a fun-filled learning environment. This summer YAA is encouraging parents and kids to think, feel and talk about their emotions through exhibits and programs. “XOXO: An Exhibit About Love & Forgiveness” fosters awareness about the power of love and promotes communication through art, interactive activities and games. “This is a summer of love and fun at Young At Art,” says Mindy Shrago, founder and CEO of Young At Art Museum. “But it’s also about exploring what we think about love and forgiveness. We want everyone who comes to ask questions, listen and learn more about the people they are with as they share, connect, converse, think and feel. They’ll discover these feelings and the effects they have on themselves and others.” Visitors can participate by illuminating a hidden message about love by holding hands, speaking into a tone phone to visibly see how their voice affects shapes on a screen, and building and exploring a variety of facial expressions using empathy blocks. For added fun, stop by during a scheduled workshop such as the one from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. July 21-22, where kids can get creative by making their own love bug cork character using recycled materials. For more information, call 954-424-0085 or visit youngatartmuseum.org

Speaking of love, nature-lovers are invited to the Museum of Discovery and Science to check out Birds of Paradise. You don’t even have to step foot outside to learn about all 39 known species of these birds. The stunning traveling exhibit, on display at the Fort Lauderdale museum through Sept. 4, encompasses sound bites, videos, photographs and artifacts. A multi-media component allows visitors to better understand these winged things through hands-on activities. To learn more see mods.org Going from creatures small to great, Miami Children’s Museum currently features Dino Island, an exhibit where robotic dinosaurs come to life and kids can play in a giant dinosaur nest. The museum also offers guided tours, theater shows, museum exploration and more. YOUNG MINDS IN MOTION For toddlers and preschoolers, play is about a lot more than just playing. For them, playing with peers encourages problem solving, elevates the imagination and promotes school readiness. To kick-start a love of learning by playing, Broward County Library recently opened its Active Learning Center (ALC) on the second floor of Fort Lauderdale’s Main Library. Resembling a bright seaside village, the ALC allows kids to imagine they are shopping at a miniature beachside store, setting sail on a boat in the great blue sea or cuddling and caring for sea animals at the Baby Bay. Youngsters can also step into the spotlight by performing an impromptu show or belting out a tune on stage. Plus, there are countless bins of books and building and play materials for little ones to explore. The play space is for children up to age 5 accompanied by parents and caregivers, who are encouraged to stash their cell phones and take the opportunity to share in the learning experience and find teachable moments along the way. The Active Learning Center is located at 100 S. Andrews Ave., and is open during regular library hours. Admission is free. To learn more or to arrange a group visit call 954-357-7444 or see broward.org/library Photo by Don Parchment

CREATIVE WAYS TO SPARK SUMMER READING BY CAROLYN JABS
M
ost parents want to encourage reading, especially during the summer when kids often have more unstructured time. Now that so much reading occurs online, parents may wonder about the best way to nurture a reading habit. Is reading on a device as good as getting lost in an old-fashioned book? The emerging answer is that both print and digital reading have value, but they promote different ways of thinking. One revealing study found that college students prefer reading online when they are looking for quick information. However, when they really want to dig in and master new material, they turn to paper books. Without the distraction of clicks, students find they engage more deeply and comprehend more of what they read. Students also reported that they liked being able to manipulate physical books — underlining, writing notes in the margins, turning down corners and being able to thumb back to a favorite passage. This study suggests that online reading often resembles snacking — quick, easy

to digest, maybe even a little addictive. Physical books offer more of a meal — stimulating and nourishing on many levels. Because kids gravitate naturally to devices (and snacks), parents may want to put a little effort into helping kids discover the pleasures of print. Fortunately, most kids are receptive. A biannual study of reading habits by Scholastic magazine found that 86% of kids think it’s important to be a good reader, and 6 in 10 agreed that “I really enjoy reading books over the summer.” Here are some ideas about turning that spark into a flame. READ ALOUD. In the Scholastic survey, kids 6–11 said that they enjoyed reading aloud, mostly because it was special time with their parents. Even after they can read independently, many kids and even teens enjoy settling in to listen to a good story. Kids who can read for themselves may enjoy taking turns reading. Or they might like to read dialogue with each child taking on the voice of a different character. HUNT FOR BOOKS TOGETHER. In the Scholastic study, 41% of kids said it was hard to find books they wanted to read. Turn the quest for good books into something you do as a family. Visit your local library regularly. Find out if there’s a story hour at the local bookshop. Hunt for bargain books at garage sales and
| browardfamilylife.com
thrift stores. Look for a Little Free Library, littlefreelibrary.org, in your neighborhood or create one of your own. Good lists of recommended books are also available from Reading Rockets, readingrockets.org/books/summer and the American Library Association, ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/notalists/ncb. FIND BOOKS AT THE RIGHT LEVEL. Kids sometimes disconnect from reading when books seem boring because they are too easy or frustrating because they are too hard. If possible, ask your child’s teacher to recommend books that are “just right” for your child. Or zero in on books at the right grade level by using the Scholastic book wizard, scholastic.com/teachers/bookwizard. FOLLOW THEIR LEAD. Like adults, kids read more of what they love. If a child gets hooked on a particular genre, author or series, run with it. And don’t get hung up on format. Magazines, graphic novels and comics can all be a gateway into reading. So can video or board games that include lots of written directions. For really reluctant readers, try activating captions on the television so kids can read along with their favorite shows. MAKE IT SOCIAL. Enthusiasm for reading is contagious, so encourage kids to share books they like whenever possible.
Some kids may enjoy writing reviews on kid-friendly sites like dogobooks.com or spaghettibookclub.org. Kids can also follow favorite authors online. Many interact with readers through local readings or websites that feature games and giveaways. Or consider organizing a summer book club. PBS offers tips about how to get one going at tinyurl.com/njgpk7k. FIND THE RIGHT INCENTIVES. Just keeping a list of books they’ve finished can be motivating for some kids. Others will benefit from a small treat — maybe a gummy “bookworm” or a pack of Smarties. An entire board of clever incentives including Reading Bingo is available on Pinterest, tinyurl.com/lp6krcg. Consider using reading itself as a reward. During the summer, let children stay up an extra hour beyond bedtime — if they are reading. SET ASIDE TIME. Designate a specific time for family reading. Turning off the TV, computers and cellphones makes it clear that reading is a priority. To get a better picture of how your kids are spending summer days, try using the media time calculator as well as the media planner created by Healthy Children, tinyurl.com/z8wbef5. GET CREATIVE. Think about fun ways to integrate books into whatever you’re doing this summer. Instead of handing your child a cellphone during wait times, carry a chapter book that you can pull out in a doctor’s waiting room or between games at a tournament. Create a treasure hunt with a new book as the treasure. Have a Reading Picnic where everyone reads outside while munching on sandwiches. Take an audio book on your family road trip. Create a secret reading space by setting up a tent in the backyard or putting a sheet over a card table. WHATEVER YOU DO, KEEP IT LIGHT. If your goal is to have kids who read because they love it, making rules too rigorous or setting expectations too high can be counter-productive. Experts say that reading as few as six books over the summer helps kids avoid the dreaded summer slump. So start with a spark and ignite a lifelong enthusiasm. Carolyn Jabs, M.A., has been writing about families and technology for over twenty years. She is also the author of the award-winning book, Cooperative Wisdom: Bringing People Together When Things Fall Apart.

Just Say Yes BY JESSICA HIGGINS
“C
an you play 18 games of Uno with me?” “Can my friends come over to play?” “Can we go to the park?” In my head, the answer to each of these questions is a guttural groan of “no,” but that’s not what I say. What I say is “yes.” By nature, I’m not a “yes” person; I’m a “leave me alone, I’m reading” person. But, when my daughter was very young, I made the decision that whatever she, and later my son, asked me — as long as I didn’t truly have a good reason to object — I’d say “yes.” There was no revelatory moment that changed my attitude, no poignant turning point when I made this decision. I just figured that, for my kids, I could be a “yes” mom. Before you chime in to let me know what I’m doing is wrong here, let me assure you that there are PLENTY of good reasons to say “no.” Like, “Can I buy this $200 Lego set?” or “Can I not wear my seat belt?” or “Can we juggle these knives?” Setting aside unnecessary purchases and dangerous behavior, I try to always say “yes” to time, experiences, and relationships. Being a “yes” mom demands more of me, but I hope that when my kids are grown, they’ll remember those endless games of Uno, the trips to the park, their friends who were always welcome in our house, and the demand on me will have been worthwhile. Additionally, what I’ve found is that not only has being a “yes” mom felt good, but it has also changed my nature. Being a “yes” person may not have come naturally, but by changing myself for my kids, I’ve simply changed myself. If a friend asks me out for a cup of coffee, I say “yes”; if neighbors want to arrange an impromptu game night, I say “yes”; if a member of my book club reaches out and asks me to attend a weekend function, I say “yes.” During the course of a given year, this “yes” approach tests my mettle, but I’ve found that it’s

ultimately rewarding. Did I want to attend the Halloween costume party and hunt around, last minute, for my costume? No. Did my husband and I have a fun evening out without the kids? Yes, we did. Did I really want to buy “ugly sweaters” for the entire family in December? No. Did we have a fun, memorable time at the Ugly Sweater Party? We did! Did I really want to attend the work party at a colleague’s home? No. The thought of it filled me with dread and anxiety. Was it a great evening where I got the chance to meet new people and forge better relationships with those I already knew? Yes, yes I did! So, I’ve found that when I can — if I have the time, opportunity, and if it doesn’t conflict with my values — I say “yes” in both parenting and in life. Jessica Higgins is a mom and former Broward College professor. Since learning to say “yes” she is busier — and happier — than ever.
