Movie Magic with a Message

F

inding a seat in an air-chilled movie theater with a box of hot popcorn is one of summer’s go-to family pastimes. And if you can sift through the barrage of peak-season blockbusters and find just the right film, it can add up to a lot more than just keeping the kids entertained for a couple of hours. One such film is Backyard Wilderness, which recently opened at AutoNation IMAX 3D Theater in Fort Lauderdale. The documentary reveals the unexpected delights of nature hidden in our own neighborhoods by following a young girl’s backyard journey of discovery. Living in a suburban home next to the woods, Katie and her modern family are preoccupied with their electronic devices and blind to the real-life wonders just outside the door. Katie gradually discovers that Wi-Fi is not the only connection that matters. Spanning the seasons of a year, the film displays Katie’s secret “neighbors” in rare and stunning intimacy captured by cameras mounted inside dens and nests and along the forest floor and pond bottom. Created by Emmy Award-winning and Oscar-nominated filmmakers Andrew Young and Susan Todd, Backyard Wilderness will be shown with the new technology of IMAX with Laser. Tickets are available at the box office at 401 SW Second St. or by phone at 954-713-0930.

A SPLASHING SUCCESS AT CASTAWAY ISLAND T.Y. Park’s water park turns into a “theme park” this summer during Castaway Island’s Splashtacular Family Fridays. The Hollywood park’s evening events will feature themes of “Under the Sea” (July 13), “Winter Wonderland in July” (July 27) and “Fall Out of Summer” (Aug. 10). In the tradition of the Family Fun Fridays held at the park for several years, Splashtaculars will include games and splash times but also add thematic decorations and dress-up. “There will be new team games,” says Paula Finlayson, park coordinator of the events. “So there will be lots of cheering.” Splashtaculars are held from 6-8pm. Admission is $7 plus sales tax per person, with children under 13 months free. For more information, call the park at 954-357-8811.

Come

...the water’s a blast! It’s another one of those steamy summer days that’ll melt the makeup right off your face. It’s just too hot to be outside — unless you’re in the water. But finding the right place to take the plunge can be a sticky predicament in South Florida, where the phrase “water, water everywhere” applies almost literally.

n Broward County, there are a gazillion options for swimming, snorkeling or any other water activity. From its 23 miles of beaches to its five water parks and all the municipal,

community and private pools in between, the county is a water-lover’s paradise. It’s not for nothing that it’s home to the International Swimming Hall of Fame. But if the obvious choices of beach and pool leave you with that “been there, done that” feeling, there are ways to make a splash that are a little out of the ordinary … and possibly a lot more exciting. One is the FlowRider® Double at Margaritaville Beach Resort. Situated on Hollywood Beach’s Broadwalk, it lets surfers and surfer wannabes ride the waves with an ocean

view but without having to actually set foot in the sea. You don’t need to be a resort guest to enjoy the adrenalinepumping surfing-simulator experience — you just need to be at least 42 inches tall for bodyboarding and 52 inches for stand-up surfing. FlowRider is open Monday-Thursday 11am-6pm and Friday-Sunday 9am-6pm. Prices for 30 minutes are $30 weekdays and $45 weekends. One of many promotions is the Thursday Locals Special, which gives residents an extra 30 minutes free with the purchase of a 30-minute session from 3-6pm. There’s also the Florida Residents Special, which offers a day pass for $95, 11am-6pm Monday-Thursday. Protect your Family

N

ow that their days of sitting in classrooms are over for the summer, kids love to jump into the pool. But before they hit the water, think about what you can do to protect them from the germs that may be lurking there. Recreational water illnesses are caused by germs in swimming pools, hot tubs, water parks, water play areas or fountains, and spread when people swallow or come in contact with the contaminated water. They can cause a number of health issues, such as gastrointestinal, skin, ear, eye and wound infections. The most common of these illnesses is diarrhea, which can be caused by germs like cryptosporidium (crypto), giardia, shigella, norovirus, and E. coli. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently released new information warning parents about crypto, as outbreaks linked to swimming have doubled since 2014. This parasite is the most common cause of diarrheal illness linked to swimming pools, and can put a swift halt to summertime fun with symptoms of watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting. Crypto spreads when people swallow something that has come in contact with the feces of an infected person — commonly, pool water contaminated with diarrhea. Unfortunately, crypto’s symptoms can last for up to three weeks and can lead to dehydration if not addressed properly.

Crypto can be problematic because it is not easily killed by chlorine and can survive up to 10 days even in properly treated water. Swallowing just a little water that contains these germs can make anyone sick. CDC recommends closing pools and treating the water with high levels of chlorine, called hyperchlorination, when responding to a pool-contamination issue or a crypto outbreak. Not nearly as troublesome as crypto but still unpleasant are the itchy irritations that can cap off a long day in the pool. Referred to as swimmer’s itch, these itchy red bumps with tiny blisters can show up on areas that were not covered by a swimsuit. If little red bumps appear around hair follicles under the child’s swimsuit, most likely on the butt or thighs, the problem may be something called “hot tub folliculitis” from a poorly chlorinated pool. Sitting in a wet bathing suit for extended periods can cause such problems as jock itch or a yeast infection in girls. If your child’s wet bathing suit comes in contact with dermatophytes, a type of mold-like fungi, it can spread to their genitals, inner thighs and butt. This irritation will be a red, itchy rash that may grow in the shape of a ring. These issues may be difficult to avoid without making your kids change out of their wet suit into dry clothes (and back again if they want to swim later on). Thoroughly washing their bathing suit after each time they wear it can help to prevent rashes from forming. It’s necessary to wash bathing suits even if they do not go in the water because sweat and sunscreen seep in. Experts recommend not washing bathing suits in the washing machine. Instead, hand-wash them with a capful of mild detergent or white vinegar. Let the swimsuit soak in the solution for up to 30 minutes and rinse with cool water. To dry, gently roll the suit in a clean dry towel, lightly pressing to remove the excess water. Lay the suit flat to dry. Finally, kids can get athlete’s foot from walking around barefoot on warm, damp surfaces like the pool deck, or from using a damp towel carrying the fungus. Signs of athlete’s foot include itching; burning; bumps on the feet; cracked, blistered or peeling areas often between the toes; redness and scaling on the soles of the feet; skin between the toes that appears “cheesy” and has an unpleasant odor; or a rash that spreads to the inside part of the foot. Make sure your kids dry their feet properly after swimming. Most of these rashes should clear up on their own but you can help out with over-the-counter antihistamines and soothing or anti-itch products, such as hydrocortisone, colloidal oatmeal products, and menthol/camphor creams. And don’t hesitate to call your pediatrician or dermatologist for a complete evaluation.

Crypto Prevention Tips • Starting from a young age, teach your kids not to swallow pool water. This can be challenging when they are really young, and accidents do happen, but add it to your list of pool safety tips.

• Rinse off your children in the shower before and after they are in the water to help remove any germs on their body.

• Check out the pool to make sure it is clean, safe and well-maintained. Only swim where there are trained staff and lifeguards consistently checking the pool water.

• Be sure to give your kids bathroom breaks throughout the day and make

sure they are wiped thoroughly. For those still in diapers, check the diapers in a changing area and not next to the pool to keep the pool area germ-free. Also, be aware that swim diapers are not foolproof and can still leak in the pool.

• Finally, if your kids are sick with a stomach issue, keep them out of the

If having something to hang on to is more your style when skimming the water, then an outing to Ski Rixen USA at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach may be your wet and wild ride of choice. At South Florida’s only cable water-skiing and wakeboard park, fun-seekers 12 and older don’t need a boat to be pulled silently over smooth water. And they can also slalom, trick-ski, kneeboard or even surf without a wave. Strategically designed to provide the best water conditions possible, the huge cable park is open daily except Mondays. Depending on whether you’re skiing or wakeboarding, basic passes range from $25 for an hour to $65 for a day. Advanced passes range from $45-$85. Group rates and military discounts are available. For more info, call 954-429-0215 for hours and visit www.skirixenusa.com or www.broward.org/parks/quietwaterspark to watch a YouTube video of the attraction in action. If your idea of a smashing good time falls — keyword: falls — somewhere between TV’s American Ninja Warrior and Wipeout, the new Tigertail Aqua Challenge at Broward College Tigertail Lake Recreational Center will put you in the action. The 8,000-square-foot inflatable water obstacle course and playground in Dania Beach will test your balance, strength and concentration with a trampoline, balance beam, jungle gym, a 25-foot bouncing dome and a 12-foot-tall freefall climbing wall with a breathtaking slide. The first Aqua Challenge in South Florida, the course’s other special features include the 12-foot-wide octagon-shaped Universal Thunderdome and The Ultimate Catapult, a 16-foot swing that launches participants into the water. And then there’s the 20-foot-wide Cyclone, an obstacle that fits up to four people and allows the rotating wheel to act as a super soaker. It also provides an ultimate spinning workout. When it’s time to chill, the multi-level enclosed splash zone is just right for playing or relaxing. Participants must be at least 7 years old and be able to swim. Sessions are one hour and include a 15-minute safety briefing. The Aqua Challenge can be a stand alone attraction or included in a full-day package at Tigertail Lake Recreational Center, which also features watersport rentals, SCUBA, sailing, lifeguarding courses and regular outdoor adventure trips. Bittersweet The coming-of-age M heartbreaks of an Asperger’s child By Lisa A. Beach

y heart both rejoices and breaks every year when we celebrate my firstborn’s birthday. I rejoice as I think back to my son’s earlier birthdays when he was about 4 or 5 years old. Each year he’d pick a new theme for his party reflecting his favorite passions. One year he loved Blue’s Clues. Another year, trains. The next, magic. I’d plan fun activities, crafts, games and goodie bags to go with the year’s chosen theme. Yes, I was that mom. I loved collecting ideas of how to make every DIY birthday feel special for my son and his friends. No matter the theme, each birthday party shared one thing in common: a group of friends from preschool or elementary school at our home helping my son celebrate his big day. They played silly games in our living room, ate cake on our back porch and chased one another in our back yard. Laughter filled the air against the noisy backdrop of the slightly uncontrolled chaos. To see my son’s face light up, to know he felt valued and accepted by his friends, to hear the shared laughter — that was a birthday gift in itself. My heart swells with happiness when I look at photos of preschool party-goers standing next to the life-size, wooden Bob the Builder cutout my husband created for a party photo opp. And I can’t help but smile when I watch the video of birthday attendees wearing their handcrafted cardboard-box race cars as they zoomed around our back yard crashing into each other. Those truly were the happiest of birthdays. Flash forward to middle school. Around sixth grade, we began to notice my son’s friends drifting away, one by one, like balloons just floating up into the sky. They stopped inviting my son to their birthday parties, to go to the movies or to just hang out. By high school, social invitations ceased, except from the neighborhood teen whose family we’ve known since our boys were toddlers. Not only did my son’s old friendships fade away, but new friendships weren’t taking their place. A gaping social hole existed in his life. What happened? Around ninth grade, we discovered that my son — always a shy, socially awkward kid — has Asperger’s Syndrome. He’s a talented artist and a smart kid, even qualifying for the gifted program in elementary school. Although quirky, he was such a high-functioning kid that we didn’t connect the Asperger’s dots until high school. With social and communication difficulties at the crux of Asperger’s, this autism-spectrum disorder often spells a death-sentence to a child’s social life and delivers a devastating blow to self-confidence. Being socially awkward and missing out on the hidden nuances of body language, facial expressions and social cues, people with Asperger’s struggle to connect with others, making it difficult to make and keep friends. And this brings me to the bittersweet tinge of celebrating my son’s birthday. Every year since fifth or sixth grade,

Birthdays birthday parties have gotten noticeably smaller. In preschool, a dozen or more kids filled our back porch. By middle school, we could fit the entire birthday party (including our family of four) in our Honda Odyssey. The very last birthday party was an awkward gathering with two of my son’s friends who knew (but did not like) each other. Painful to watch, it was like a page right out of Agatha Christie’s novel And Then There Was None, as one by one, the attendees vanished from our once-burgeoning RSVP list. The heartbreak of it all actually mirrored a scene in Little Man Tate. In that 1991 movie, 7-year-old Fred Tate, whose intellectual and artistic giftedness made him not fit in with his peers, threw a birthday party and no one showed up. You could just see the anguish on the face of his mom, Dede, played by Jodie Foster. Fred could be my son, and I could be Dede Tate.

I am mourning the birthdays of yesteryear filled with squeals of laughter in my back yard. I am yearning for those days when my son felt accepted and included by his peers. I am missing the days when birthdays felt 100% like the celebrations they should be. As my son’s birthday approaches each year, I still cry a little inside for what should be for him the happiest day of the year. Parties once populated by friends have been replaced by family-only celebrations. But I also celebrate my son, now 19 and in college, as he prepares for the next phase of his life. I am his biggest cheerleader and in awe of the man he is turning into, as I watch his self-confidence slowly rebuild. And I silently thrill at the flicker of college friendships I see beginning to take shape. Birthdays serve as bittersweet reminders, now and forever, to be my son’s best friend, regardless of whether or not anyone else steps up to fill that role.

I am mourning the birthdays of yesteryear filled with squeals of laughter in my back yard.

WORDS of

Wisdom

Penny-pinching Parenting THE POETIC JUSTICE OF ONE FAMILY’S FRUGALITY BY KARA MARTINEZ BACHMAN

W

hen I was young, I was sure my parents had to be the cheapest people to ever walk the earth. Ever. It used to disgust me. Until I had kids. The groundwork for my embracing of frugality probably began when I met my husband. I hadn’t believed anyone could be cheaper than my parents were, or that there could be anything at all good about it. I heard stories of how he grew up. Cultivating a huge garden to have free vegetables. Saving slivers of soap to melt down into new bars. Reusing plastic food containers. And what must be the worst of all, the absolute pinnacle of cheapness: recycling Christmas tree tinsel for 20 years (it was so old, it just looked like gray transparent plastic, with no shine). His parents made mine seem downright normal in comparison. I remember the day I told him my parents had made me and my three siblings share a Coca-Cola at Disney World. “What are you complaining about?” he asked. “You at least got to go to Disney World.” This story, though, always stuck with me. I’d tell it — until I had my own children old enough to complain while at Disney World. “You’ve got perfectly good water bottles,” I’d said to my own little kids when we’d made our trips to the Magic Kingdom. “Fill up those bottles at the next water fountain. You’ll be fine.” I’ll be darned if I’ll spend triple what a Coke costs in the rest of the known universe, in the kingdoms that are less magical, and where people have mortgages to pay. We’d sit on a bench right outside “Pirates of the Caribbean” and snack on trail mix and affordable odds and ends we’d brought in our backpacks to tide us over. My husband and I would always laugh at how much we had become like our own frugal parents. We’re not gonna stop going, though, are we? We need the Disney magic. I’d never suggest otherwise. Since I guess it’s in my DNA, I’m frugal with my kids. It’s OK.

It’s for their own good. Generic-brand chips and cereals with lame rip-off names have never caused lasting PTSD. The tradeoff for us cheapskates is we teach our kids through action how to make smart money decisions. We teach ourselves something about it, too, and feel proud when we notice others struggling to pay the bills, while we — the frugal, the planners, the budgeters and the sharers of Cokes — can relax. When you’re on vacation with your children — standing in line at an amusement park, or feeling frustrated by the cost of something as simple as a movie, drink and small popcorn — remember that it’s OK to stand firm. The rides will still be thrilling, or the movie still great, without all the extras. It’s OK, parents, if you’re cheap — forgive yourselves. Your kids will grow up to be just fine. They might need therapy, but they’ll be just fine. (Only kidding. They’ll be strong, resilient people who know the value of a dollar.) So … when your little ones nag a time too many and you’ve had enough, just tell them to shush up and be grateful. It could be worse — they could at that very moment be eating generic-brand Vienna sausages from a can next to Cinderella’s Castle. Kara Martinez Bachman is author of the women’s humor essay collection on parenting and relationships, “Kissing the Crisis.” Don’t ask her for a sip of her Coke.
