Safety keeps the fun in pool time. A fun day at the pool can quickly get drained away, especially when kids get caught up in the thrill of the moment and forget to be safe. Should an accident happen, HCA kid-friendly ERs are nearby. Our full-service hospitals are staffed with experienced doctors and nurses who handle all types of injuries. So, when your child needs expert emergency care, you can count on us to provide it 24/7.
Know and act upon these important pool safety tips: • Keep a close eye on your kids while they are in the pool. • Ensure your kids know where water is deep and shallow. • Have your kids stay away from pool drains. • Practice water safety skills like first aid, emergency response and CPR. • Make sure there is appropriate safety equipment near the pool, such as life rings, reaching poles and a first-aid kit.
To speak to a registered nurse or if you need a FREE physician referral, call Consult-A-Nurse® at 954-724-6349. Visit HCAEastFlorida.com for more information and average ER wait times. In an emergency, call 9-1-1.

f sea turtles could speak, they would tell you that their struggle is real. With only about 1 in 1,000 hatchlings surviving to adulthood, our flippered friends have a lifetime battle against predators, pollution and human impact. (MEEC) at Hollywood North Beach Park has beat the odds, but it hasn’t always been easy sailing for her. Partially paralyzed after being struck by a boat, Captain can no longer survive on her own in the great big blue, but instead serves as the Center’s Sea Turtle Ambassador where kids learn the importance of caring for our marine and coastal environments. The newly opened Center, located at the historic Carpenter House, is a partnership between the Broward County Parks and Recreation Division and Nova Southeastern University. In addition to giving non-releasable sea turtles a forever home, the facility also features displays, interactive activities and educational programs. MEEC is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with specialized programming scheduled during operating hours. Admission to the center is free, although a $3 donation is suggested to offset operational

costs and to support environmental outreach. For information visit cnso.nova.edu/carpenter-house-meec. Sea turtle themed fun continues at a variety of locations this summer. With Florida accounting for 70 percent of the nation’s sea turtle nesting, and the season in full swing, there are a number of programs from which to choose. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park hosts a Sea Turtle Awareness program at 9 p.m. Wednesday and Friday nights through July 28. Participants ages 6 and up can gather around a campfire to learn all about sea turtles through ranger-led discussions and displays. Pre-registration is required. 6503 N. Ocean Dr., Dania Beach, 954-924-3859 Another option is the Moonlight Sea Turtle Walk at the Museum of Discovery and Science. For $21 on select nights June 13 through July 13, sea turtle fans can spend some time learning about the creatures with an indoor program followed by a guided trek on the beach to watch for turtles that have come to lay eggs. The adventure begins at 9 p.m. and goes into the wee hours. Though it’s not a guarantee, with some patience and luck, you just might spot a nesting turtle. This program is designed for those ages 9 and up. For reservations or information call 954-467-6637 or visit mods.org. And finally, who can resist the hatchlings? The Sea Turtles and Their Babies program at Anne Kolb Nature Center gives participants a chance to witness a hatchling release (conditions permitting) on the beach. The program begins with an educational presentation then culminates on the sand where tiny hatchlings make their way into the surf. The program starts at 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays July 5 through September 1. Pre-registration is available online, but hurry, this program fills up fast. The cost is $10 per person. Words of Wisdom »
Do I look fat in this Fitbit? BY LISA A. BEACH
T
apping into the latest trend, my wellintentioned husband recently bought me a Fitbit, one of those omnipotent fitness tracker wristbands. The Fitbit monitors your every move (literally) with a built-in GPS and loads of features, making it a top-seller that (supposedly) fits every lifestyle. That is, every lifestyle but mine. I practically hung my head in ungrateful shame as I returned his gift, because isn’t it all about the thought that counts? What does this say about me if I returned a gift, not because it didn’t fit or it’s the wrong color, but because I just didn’t like it? What kind of monster am I? And yet, I’m ready to be branded with a scarlet letter as I returned my Fitbit to the sporting goods store (where my husband scored a 20% discount, no less!). I’m probably the only person in the world who’s jumping off the Fitbit bandwagon. Why? For starters, I’m just not into exercise. I mean, I occasionally walk and do yoga, but only because I know I should. And I’ve given up trying to master the Dance Off the Inches Hip Hop Party DVD I bought a few years ago, foolishly thinking I could do complex choreography “so simple anyone can do it.” Well, thanks for making me feel like an idiot, girlwith-rock-hard-abs-on-the-DVD-cover. When Fit Blonde Girl instructs her hip-hop wannabees to “pop it,” the only thing that pops (and cracks) is my arthritic hip. And I do try to incorporate movement into my daily life. I kick butt in word games, throw a fit when my teen mouths off to me, run daily errands, jump to conclusions and dance around uncomfortable conversations. These activities don’t really burn many calories, but at least I’m not totally sedentary. But the fitness tracker is a little too Big Brother for me, with my every movement being monitored 24/7. To get the most out of my Fitbit, I need to wear it all the time, even when I’m sleeping, shackling me like an I’m-on-house-arrest ankle bracelet. It just dangles on my wrist all day, recording every arm swing as I walk or reach for another glass of wine. Who needs that judgment all day long?

I feel like I should be wowed by this “wonder product” chock-full of features that track not only your exercise, but also your sleep patterns, your water consumption, your calories and your heart rate, but then there’s the whole guilt factor. On days when I think I’ve been fairly active, I check my Fitbit only to discover that I racked up an unimpressive 415 steps today, and it’s already 3 p.m. This sets off a mini-rage, as I yell at my wrist monitor, “Why are you silently judging me? Who are you to tell me I’m below my goal today?” On top of all this, I’m always just a few steps behind what’s trending. Case in point — Breaking Bad was three seasons old before I even heard about it. And I just read a fashion article that pantyhose are coming back in, which made me wonder, when were they out? So it feels a bit premature for me to jump on the Fitbit bandwagon just yet. I’m also not what marketing experts would call an “early adopter.” I don’t upgrade my cell phone every year. I have zero desire for an Apple Watch. I don’t want a drone. And, after great resistance, I finally forced myself to get on Twitter now that it’s almost 10 years old. I’m always late to the trend party by choice. Now, if my husband can find me a Witbit to monitor my sarcasm, I’d be all over that. But a Fitbit? Thanks, but I’m good.
