Larger than Life DINOSAUR EXHIBIT INVADES LOCAL BOTANICAL GARDENS

I

f you have a pint-sized paleontologist on your hands or a kid who just digs dinosaurs, this prehistoric adventure is a must see. Starting May 27, those who roam the lush land of Flamingo Gardens will encounter realistic dinosaur replicas along the way. The life-sized Jurassic creatures, nestled amongst the jungle setting, are part of the Lost World of Dinosaurs exhibit on display at the attraction through September 4. Guy Darrough, a seasoned fossil collector and preparation expert, created the likes of the 27 visiting dinosaurs, while Paleo artist Shane Foulkes carefully painted the authentic details that brings each one to life. The exhibit has toured botanical gardens throughout the country, but this is its first stop in South Florida’s tri-county area. “We are really excited to host Guy Darrough’s life-like dinosaurs in our tropical gardens, as part of our 90th Anniversary Celebration,” says Keith Clark, managing director and director of development for Flamingo Gardens. “We hope it inspires a new generation of paleontologists and is an engaging way for our visitors to learn more about Florida’s prehistoric plants, animals, and history.” The experience also includes hands-on activities where kids learn about modern day plant and animal descendants, unearth bones in a Dino Dig area, touch real fossils and view an actual fossilized dinosaur egg.

SLOWING THE SLIDE With a lengthy school break rapidly approaching, parents are preparing for those two dreaded words. No, not “I’m bored” (although those are cringe-worthy too), even worse — Summer Slide. As the lazy days of summer set in, learning loss becomes inevitable. If you aren’t planning to incorporate an academic camp or program into your family’s summer plans, an easy way to reverse that regression is to keep kids reading. Broward County Library’s Summer Learning Program is a fun way for kids of all ages to keep up their reading skills while

For added fun, stop by May 27 through May 29 during the exhibit’s opening weekend as Flamingo Gardens simultaneously celebrates its annual Memorial Day Kidzfest event featuring games and entertainment for the whole family. The Lost World of Dinosaurs is a precursor of new things to come, Clark adds. “This is our first national traveling exhibit in the gardens. We look forward to hosting similar exhibitions in the coming years.” The exhibit is included with paid admission of $19.95/adult, $12.95/child. Flamingo Gardens is located at 3750 S. Flamingo Rd., Davie. For more information call 954-473-2955 or visit FlamingoGardens.org

earning prizes and playing interactive games. Online registration begins May 18 prior to the program’s official June 1 start date. Kids can also sign up and participate in special programming at local library branches throughout the summer. Another way to inspire a love of literacy is at Children’s BookFest, taking place this year on Saturday, May 6 at the West Regional Library in Plantation. This free event celebrates the joy of reading by way of local authors, music, storytellers, performers, arts and crafts and more. The first 1,000 children receive a free book. For families who are fortunate enough to have too many books at home, or titles your children have outgrown, consider donating them to a local library branch. The library uses donations to add to its collection, and for fundraising efforts geared toward programming and resources. It’s a great way to share the love of reading. Wish List 5 Gifts Every Mom Wants

The truth is, most moms I know don’t want gifts that you can buy in a store. Instead, they want the simple things in life, like sleep, privacy, peace, cleanliness, harmony, and cooperation. The best part? These mostly no-cost gifts fit every budget.

GIFT #1

Let Mom sleep in

Seriously, this is not the day to cut the grass at 8 a.m., slam the bathroom door, blare the soccer game that you recorded on ESPN last night, practice your armpit farts, stand next to Mom and stare at her to see if she’s really sleeping, or loudly whisper outside Mom’s bedroom door, “SHHHHH! MOM IS SLEEPING!” No, Mom was sleeping before you all woke her up.

GIFT #2

Buy breakfast, make lunch & dinner

If you’re going to treat Mom to anything today, feed her addiction to caffeine and make an early-morning coffee run. More importantly, do this before Mom wakes up because she’s a bit of a grouch if she’s got to wait 20 minutes for a cup of joe. While you’re at the coffee shop getting Mom an extra-large travel mug of hazelnut coffee, grab bagels for the whole family and enjoy breakfast. (NOTE: Do NOT wake Mom to tell her that breakfast is ready. This is counter-productive to Gift #1.) For lunch, keep it

14

B R O W A R D F A M I LY L I F E

| browardfamilylife.com

simple and just make a big salad or some sandwiches. For dinner, skip the raucous restaurant filled with lots of other noisy families. Just work together and make dinner while you bring Mom a glass of wine and a good book to enjoy on the back porch. (It wouldn’t hurt to give her a five-minute shoulder rub either.)

GIFT #3

Adopt a W M W philosophy

Mom is bone-tired from making hundreds of family decisions every day, so don’t burden her with even one choice today other than “do you want another glass of wine?” (And of course, you already know the answer to this, so keep pouring.) Instead, adopt a “What Mom Wants” (WMW) philosophy when you stumble into a decision-making quandary. For example, not only does Mom not want to cook any meals on Mother’s Day, she doesn’t even want to think about what to cook, even if you’re doing the cooking. (Frankly, after all these years, you should know a few of Mom’s favorite foods. Dip into your memory bank, think of what Mom orders when the family goes out to eat, and BOOM, there’s your answer. It’s not rocket-science, people.)

GIFT #5

GIFT #4

Maintain a conflict-free day

No fighting over chores, video games, whose turn it is to do something, who put the six-inch scratch on the side of dad’s car, who gets to eat the leftover Chinese food, who broke the sprinkler head again, who left the bag of pretzels open from last night, or who used the TV remote last because now no one can find it. If you absolutely cannot help yourself (which is very likely), know that Mom can still hear you if you try to whisper-fight in the next room. Instead, retreat to the car with dad, lock yourselves inside, and let dad referee your verbal battles so Mom doesn’t even have to hear it. Note to kids: It doesn’t make Mom feel good when you fight about whose turn it is to do something nice, as in, “I just got her a glass of water, so you take her book to her.” “No, it’s your turn. I just ran upstairs for her reading glasses.” “That’s not fair, why do I have to do everything?” Mom now feels like a big fat burden, so let’s not fight about not wanting to do more than your fair share of nice things. Kinda kills the moment.

Pick up the slack

When Mom takes even one day off, the state of the house takes a quick nosedive. The sheer volume of daily messes that Mom needs to pick up, step over, or avert her eyes from overwhelms her. Would it kill you to throw in a load of laundry, hang up your towel, replace the toilet paper roll, unload the dishwasher, put away your soccer cleats, throw away the empty bag of tortilla chips, wipe up the milk you spilled on t he counter, cap the toothpaste, or rinse out the sink after you spit? It’s all in the details, people. Bonus Gift Idea: With all that being said, Mom wouldn’t refuse a gift card for a massage or an exquisitely good bar of sea-salt-caramel-filled dark chocolate that she doesn’t have to share. Just sayin’.

AWARDS

You hear it a lot — “family-friendly.” Just two words, but really meaningful to parents and their children — and the places that attract them. But what does the phrase really mean? We asked our readers and they gave us a pretty good idea by sharing their favorite spots in Broward County and beyond, for everything from ice cream to health care, places where they felt like one of the family. We hope you will, too.

FAMILY FUN favorite attractions Butterfly World

Miami Seaquarium Opened in 1955, this 38-acre tropical playground on Biscayne Bay is a South Florida landmark. That’s, of course, thanks largely to its most famous mammal, Flipper. Nearly 90 episodes of the eponymous ’60s TV show and two movies starring the dolphin thespian were filmed at the park. Today, it remains one of the region’s premier entertainment and educational attractions. Eight marine animal shows feature sea lions, Lolita the Killer Whale and dolphins — and yes, the Flipper show is still making a splash! Visitors can get into the action with penguin encounters and into the water with tropical reef, seal and dolphin encounters. The Dolphin Odyssey is highlighted by a thrill ride hanging on to a dolphin’s dorsal fin. The Shark Channel has kept guests fascinated since the park opened, while other exhibits feature penguins, manatees, crocodiles, stingrays, sea turtles and tropical fish and birds. 4400 Rickenbacker Causeway, Miami, 305-361-5705, miamiseaquarium.com

Imagine seeing a butterfly or two — or three! — flutter down and rest right on your child’s arm. That happens all the time and is just part of the magic at this wonderland for 20,000 of the most enchanting flying insects from around the globe, all here in our own backyard. The largest butterfly park in the world is home to three open-air butterfly aviaries, six free-flight aviaries for hundreds of exotic birds and hummingbirds, an interactive lorikeet encounter, a butterfly museum and even a Bug Zoo. “Amazing! Nothing like it in the world,” says Sarah Myles of Plantation. Waterfalls, botanical gardens and a butterfly farm enhance the habitat that in 1988 became the fascination-come-to-life of Dutch immigrant Ronald Boender. Educational tours give an upclose look at the miracle of metamorphosis, as expert guides lead youngsters through the entire life cycle of the butterfly — one could even lay its eggs right before their eyes. 3600 W. Sample Rd., Coconut Creek, 954-977-4400, butterflyworld.com

Palm Beach Zoo You’re snuggling into your sleeping bag when suddenly from somewhere in the night comes a deafening roar. Is it a lion, a tiger, a bear? Oh my! Well, it wouldn’t be a lion, but it could be a tiger or bear because you’re at one of the zoo’s Family Overnights. Spring and fall overnight guests experience animal encounters, a tour and wild games. They’re just one of many activities at the 23-acre habitat, home to over 550 animals and 190 species, many endangered. Zoo Camp, Zoo School and animal experiences featuring capybaras, flamingoes and — awww! — koalas go hand-in-hand with more unusual events like last month’s Brew at the Zoo and this month’s Stacey Konwiser Memorial Save The Tiger 5k run. “Great animal variety, splash pad for break time, easy to walk around and easy parking,” says Tina Babos of Davie. 1301 Summit Blvd., West Palm Beach, 561-547-9453, palmbeachzoo.org

FAMILY FUN favorite free or low-cost fun Broward County Parks When it comes to fun in the South Florida sun, it would be hard to find a more hands-on experience with Mother Nature, a more colorful assortment of activities — and a better bargain — than Broward parks. Admission to regional parks is always free for children age 5 and younger, and on weekdays, it’s free for everyone else. On weekends and holidays, it only costs $1.50 per person, and same-day re-entry is free with receipt. Depending on which park you choose, the range of free or low-cost activities includes basketball, racquetball/handball, tennis, volleyball, disc golf, hiking nature trails and fishing. And there’s a lot more than playgrounds to keep the toddlers and preschoolers happy — nature programs, water parks, pony rides and even model steam train rides. Some parks offer other special attractions as well. “Campfires and hayrides at T.Y. Park are fun for the whole family,” says Pat Raglin of Hollywood. “S’mores and good music.” (This activity is also at three other parks from October through March.) At Markham Park, there is “an amazing observatory open to the public on certain days of the week,” says Jonathan Wolfe of Weston. “They have 4 huge telescopes that are focused on different celestial bodies such as stars, moons, comets, etc.” Anabel Herrera of Davie adds: “Secret Woods Park has a trail with crabs walking all around you.” Now, doesn’t that sound like fun? Visit broward.org/parks for a list of locations and activities.

NSU Alvin Sherman Library Two distinctions make this one very special library: It’s the largest public library building in the state and the country’s only library shared by a private university and a county government. When Broward and Nova Southeastern University joined forces to open it in 2001, they did it up right for families. “Always lots of fun things going on. SeussFest, story time for kids, movie nights for teens, GREAT!” says Tanja Rodriguez of Plantation. A few upcoming events give you a good idea. On May 13, master puppet builder Holli Rubin leads the interactive Three Billy Goats Gruff Puppetry Workshop, and on July 15, Fantasy Theatre Factory presents a wacky retelling, Cinderella, A Fractured Fairy Tale. These complement recurring programs like Seussical Stories, Teen Crafternoon and Afterschool Adventures. And a May 16 Scholarships & Awards Workshop helps older kids dig up funds for college. There’s plenty to do for Mom and Dad too — writing workshops, theatrical presentations, discussion groups, art exhibits and computer camps. 3100 Ray Ferrero, Jr. Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, 954-262-5477, sherman.library.nova.edu

Family Fun Fridays at Gulfstream Park Gulfstream Park’s evolution into a south Broward entertainment mecca has been a winner for families, thanks mostly to these free weekend kickoffs. A cast of characters from Goofy to Dora get the party started with interactive DJs and lots of games Fridays from 7-9pm in Champions Plaza. “My kids love the characters and the music,” says Jessica Sanchez of Hollywood. Other family-friendly events at the park include junior chef cooking classes at Williams-Sonoma and free cartoon drawing classes at Barker Animation Art Gallery. Also, several restaurants offer “kids eat free” days. 901 S. Federal Hwy., Hallandale Beach, 954-454-7000, gulfstreampark.com

favorite beach Hollywood ArtsPark A longtime oasis of green in the roundabout heart of downtown, the park is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its reemergence as an interactive blend of culture, nature and free fun. Within its 10 acres, paved promenades pass under rare Baobab trees and within the mist of a striking fountain designed by Japanese artist Ritsuko Taho. Children splash in an interactive fountain of their own and cavort in an innovative playground near Romero Britto’s “Garden Butterfly” sculpture. The Amphitheater’s main stage and lawn host concerts and events such as Movie Nights. The Visual Arts Pavilion is home to gallery exhibits, glass-blowing demonstrations and classes in dance and martial arts. There are Food Truck Nights and Funtastic Fridays, featuring a DJ, bounce houses, face painting, games and more. Jessica Klahr of Pembroke Pines sums it up: “Free and fun for kids!” Young Circle, Hollywood Boulevard and Federal Highway, 954-921-3500, hollywoodfl.org

Hollywood Beach Broadwalk Jimmy Buffett may have brought some “changes in attitudes” to Hollywood Beach. But despite being the new big kid on the block (and adding muchneeded parking), his Margaritaville resort hasn’t really changed that flip-flop funky vibe that makes the Broadwalk the laid-back, family-friendly cousin of the flashier beachfronts to its north and south. Not only is the beach so clean it’s annually certified by the national Clean Beaches Council, but take just one step off the sand and you immediately experience what makes Hollywood Beach so special — you don’t have to cross a street to get to the Broadwalk. And yet that one step takes you back a few decades into a smaller, casually kitschy South Florida seaside, one still lined with mostly modest inns and rentals and eateries diverse in ambiance, cuisine and price. Yet almost all of them afford parents the distinct pleasure of dining al fresco while watching their kids play in the sand a few steps away. The two-plus miles of brick-paved promenade are perfect for jogging, bicycling, roller-blading or just strolling. It’s also home to two parks, a play fountain and the annual Candy Cane Parade, which for 62 years has set enchanted youngsters scurrying after candy tossed from the dozens of lighted floats in one of the country’s longest-running holiday parades. 954-921-3500, visithollywoodfl.org

FAMILY FUN favorite parks T.Y. Park You’ve got it made in the shade at Topeekeegee Yugnee, Seminole for “gathering place,” and well-named for its many shady picnic areas and shelters and big covered playground. There’s even a gazebo for weddings. And as Alicia D. of Fort Lauderdale says, “Their two-mile walking path is great for getting your daily walk in, and the trees provide an abundance of shade so it’s not too hot.” Of course, much of the 138 acres is out in the open, such as Castaway Island water park and the lovely large lake with a geyser-like fountain and a marina for boat rentals. Bike rentals are available too. And there’s a 61-site RV campground as well as a primitive camping site. 3300 N. Park Rd., Hollywood, 954-357-8811, broward.org/parks

Vista View There are some things here you won’t find any other place in the county — rolling hills. They help to make the 272-acre park and its fitness trail popular as a challenging athletic training ground and site for cycling or running events that require more than flatland. Among other distinctions are a horse trail and an airfield for paragliders and electric-powered plane enthusiasts — and the site’s backstory as a reclaimed landfill monitored by the EPA. One of two canopied playgrounds is Universal Access and can be used by kids of different ability levels. “Great playgrounds, awesome place to enjoy outdoors with the whole family,” says Tanya Alves Otero of Weston. “Love the space to fly kites, ride bikes, bbq or even just to kick the ball around outdoors,” adds Carmen Beltran of Pembroke Pines. 4001 SW 142 Ave., Davie, 954-357-8898, broward.org/parks

Tree Tops Park Part of this site was previously owned by golfer Sam Snead, who envisioned it as a golf course. Luckily for park-goers, the county stepped in, bought the land in 1980 and turned it into one very special place. “Love the trees. My kids love swinging on the vines,” says Anabel Herrera of Davie. “The viewing tower is awesome and the trails are great. It’s a great place to take pictures.” Its Pine Island Ridge is the county’s highest natural elevation — 29 feet above sea level. By contrast, 23 acres of the 243-acre park are restored freshwater marsh with a 1,000-foot boardwalk. And there’s also seven miles of horse trails, three nature trails, 15 acres of lake and waterways, a marina and a large, naturalwood multipurpose building. 3900 SW 100 Ave., Davie, 954-357-5130, broward.org/parks

favorite places to swim & splash Paradise Cove at CB Smith Park Where do families turn when the summer temperatures soar and the kids are groaning that they’re bored? Paradise Cove is a go-to for locals looking for a cool day of summer fun. The largest water attraction in Broward County’s park system, this water playground features Paradise Pipeline, made up of four waterslides that ascend five stories high, and Sharkey’s Lagoon complete with slides, spouts and waterfalls for all ages. The park also has a meandering Crazy Creek tube ride and a 12-inch-deep pool with two small slides designed for kids 5 and under. The park is open weekends through May and daily during summer break. Admission is $10/day, or $6.75 after 3pm. 900 N. Flamingo Rd., Pembroke Pines, 954-357-5170, broward.org/parks

Rapids Water Park

Plantation Woods Park

If plummeting down a near-vertical chute or rocketing through a raging flume is your kind of fun, then you understand why Rapids Water Park is a top pick when it comes to making a splash. Rapids has some of the biggest thrill rides around with a zero-G experience, a pitch dark vortex funnel raft ride, and a vertical plunge where riders accelerate to speeds reaching 35 mph. If you don’t feel the need for speed, no worries, the 30-acre park has plenty of options for all ages, and adventure levels. Cheree Liebowitz of Hollywood sums it up: “The place has everything for kids — water slides, Flow Rider, splash pad...we can spend all day there.” Stop by May 7th for La Fiesta, a day of music and fun for everyone. The park is not open year round though, so be sure to check the website. 6566 N. Military Trail, West Palm Beach, 561-848-6272, rapidswaterpark.com

With a little imagination, kids who enter the gates of this 2.5-acre whimsical woods-themed park can pretend to be in a friendly forest while climbing through woodland-inspired playground equipment and cooling off in a steady stream of mountain… err…fountain water. In the center of the park is a zero-depth splash pad that includes ground sprays, cattails and colorful loops to keep kids cool. Surrounding the water play area are several playgrounds with tree houses, grizzly bear structures and specialty tree swings. Plantation Woods has plenty of space for kids of all ages to run around and have fun, says Anabel Herrera of Davie. “This park has three different play sets for toddlers through big kids. It also has a wonderful splash pad with great features and is long enough for plenty of kids to enjoy.” 5555 Palm Tree Rd., Plantation, 954-452-2510, plantation.org/parks

FAMILY FUN favorite adventure Everglades Holiday Park It’s just a short hop from the relatively young enclave of Weston to the eons-old ecosystem of the Everglades and its Holiday Park, one of South Florida’s must-see destinations for family fun. Famous for its gator shows and airboat rides through the “River of Grass,” its newest attraction, Animal Encounters, gives visitors a touchy-feely experience with the park’s furry and scaly inhabitants. Of course, the most popular of them is the alligator, and this is one of the few places where the jawdropping reptiles can be observed both in their natural habitat and up-close in the shows. The gators share the spotlight with the Gator Boys of Animal Planet fame, and many episodes of the popular reality TV show are filmed here. favorite museum Museum of Discovery and Science “This museum allows children and families to learn outside of the classroom in meaningful ways,” says Nicole Jobson of Weston. Indeed, this 25-year-old monument to the idea that learning is fun is as much an experience as a museum. Its exhibit space more than doubled a few years ago with the addition of the EcoDiscovery Center. In its five exhibit areas, visitors can take a ride on the Everglades Airboat Adventure, experience hurricane force winds in the Storm Center and dig for fossils alongside a giant prehistoric megalodon in the Prehistoric Florida area. Or they can take a simulated trip to Mars in the recently expanded space hall or explore the miracle of the human body in the permanent exhibit, Powerful You. Beginning this month (May 27 – Sept. 5), the traveling exhibit, Birds of Paradise, captures all 39 known species into a hands-on, multimedia showcase. And if ever the young ones tire of playing in The Discovery Center, designed especially for children under 7, everyone can take in a movie on the biggest screen in South Florida at the AutoNation IMAX 3D Theater. 201 SW Second St., Fort Lauderdale, 954-713-0930, mods.org

favorite family festivals Orange Blossom Festival Davie’s big February celebration is more than just a weekend “festival” — it’s a community extravaganza fitting for Broward’s “Wild West” town. Sure, there are the festival mainstays, such as an arts and crafts show, musical entertainment, green market, etc. But also among the 250 free displays at this year’s 80th annual event were “Cowboy Town,” a Native American display, an animal farm, a western carriage display and a kids’ corner with inflatable rides, face painting, puppet shows and other activities. And don’t forget the Friday kickoff golf classic and free concert, the Saturday morning parade and the championship rodeo on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. Whooeee! “Great event for the whole family to enjoy,” says Risa Steward of Davie. “Local vendors and fun stuff for the kids to do.”

Las Olas Art Festival

Florida Renaissance Festival

It’s an immersive experience — moseying through the colorful crowds along the trendy Fort Lauderdale boulevard, your senses bombarded from all sides by the kaleidoscope of eye-catching paintings and photographs, life-size sculptures and one-of-a-kind jewelry from 150 top artists and artisans. Not to mention the sounds of live music and smells of festival treats. In its 29th year and rated as one of the country’s top 30 art festivals, this South Florida tradition has grown so popular that in recent years it’s expanded into two weekends, Part I in January and Part II in March. “Great art festival,” says Fort Lauderdale’s Julie Simons. “I love introducing my kids to art, and this is a fun way to do it.”

Parks can provide great escapes from the pressures of the modern world. At Quiet Waters Park you can escape the modern world completely. This quarter-century-old festival brings the 16th century back to life as, for seven weekends a year, catapults hurl, blacksmiths clang and armored knights with lances joust on steeds or battle with swords for their honor. “It’s fun to step back in time,” says Debby Bitting of Fort Lauderdale. In the Craft Village, over 100 merchants and artisans demonstrate and sell their wares, while all about the fairgrounds, hundreds of costumed performers re-enact the experience of 16th-century life on — and off — twelve stages. EATS & TREATS favorite frozen treats The Magic Cow The reviews are in on this mom-and-pop ice cream shop and the consensus is: yum! “It’s very good and the owners, Andy and Allison, make you feel like they’ve known you forever... very sweet,” says Debbie Bitting of Fort Lauderdale. The longtime proprietors with friendly Scottish accents scoop up a menu full of lip-lickin’ guilty pleasures like fresh homemade ice cream with mix-ins served in cups, cones, sundaes and shakes. There are even smoothies and ice cream cakes, customized for birthdays, if you like. Oh, and don’t forget the cupcakes. 2571 S. University Dr., Davie, 954-382-1677, themagiccow.com

favorite breakfast place Bake Shack “Their breakfast sandwiches are amazing,” says Jessica Sanchez of Hollywood. Perhaps she’s speaking of the amazing Dough Boy, an egg sandwich on doughnut bread. Yes, doughnut bread! That’s just one specialty of this family-owned bakery that in just a little more than a year has become popular for its small-batch baked goods — especially gourmet doughnuts like the raised maple-glazed one that’s topped with applewood smoked bacon. Ownerbaker Keith Freiman draws upon an impressive culinary resume for his from-scratch signature breakfast and lunch dishes, such as the California egg sandwich, a fried egg with a soft yolk, avocado, and mixed greens on house-baked challah; chicken and waffles; and a pretzel burger. And, did we mention the doughnuts? 238 S. Federal Hwy., Dania Beach, 754-217-4235, bakeshackfl.com

favorite farmers market Yellow Green Farmers Market Quick — think of something you can eat. Chances are you’ll find it at one of the 300-plus booths of this warehouse-sized marriage of green market and bazaar. Infused olive oil? Check. Micro greens? Check. Quail eggs? Knishes? Amish butter? Check. Check. Check. These are just some of the more uncommon goodies overflowing from this cornucopia of seasonal, fresh foods and artisanal products from local artists and craftsmen. And there’s much more than edibles under the market’s outdoor roof: clothing and jewelry, home and garden goods, beauty and pet products, and ceramic painting and balloon art for the kids. “Great atmosphere, lots of try-before-you-buy,” says Cynthia Murray of Lauderhill. “And so family-friendly.” 1940 N. 30th Rd., Hollywood, 954-513-3990, ygfarmersmarket.com

Rob’s Family BBQ The motto here is “Real Pit, Real Wood, Real Smoke, Real Good,” and apparently it’s been working real well. The Scruby family has been serving up quality BBQ with a side of downhome Southern hospitality for over two decades in South Florida. Their highest-grade baby back ribs are imported from Denmark and, along with their beef, pork and chicken specialties, are seasoned and slowsmoked daily. And, of course, it’s all slathered with BBQ sauce from their own recipe. Rob’s can accommodate parties of up to 35 and catering is also available. “Great food, centrally located, great service and a pleasant environment with memorabilia on the walls,” says Lisa Bennett of Davie. 8990 W. IMACS Does your child need a challenge beyond math class? For over 20 years, the Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science has been expanding children’s minds by developing critical thinking, logic and reasoning skills. Unlike the mundane memorization of mathematical facts, formulas and theories, IMACS creates an interactive and fun learning atmosphere. Students are challenged to reach their highest potential using games, logic puzzles, virtual robotics and other engaging activities. The Computer Programming & Virtual Robotics class teaches students to write computer programs and then apply their skills in the Virtual Robotics Lab, while the self-paced University-Level course gives middle and high school students an outlet for their academic talents, and a head start for college. In addition to after school and weekend programs, IMACS offers a Hi-Tech Summer Camp and homeschool and online options. South Florida locations include Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Weston and Plantation, 954-791-2333, imacs.org

He’s a multipleyear recipient of the American Medical Association’s Physician Recognition Award. favorite special needs provider Nicklaus Children’s Dan Marino Pediatric Outpatient Center “I was there the other day for an appointment,” says Risa Steward of Davie. “Everyone was very nice and the place had a beautiful comforting motif and friendly atmosphere for children.” Risa’s visit was one of over 60,000 made each year to the integrated neurodevelopmental center from as far away as South America and Europe. Named for two sports legends, the center has been scoring big for infants, children and teens with neurological disabilities since it was founded in 1998. Specializing in diagnostic and rehabilitation services, it also offers an internationally recognized autism program. Plus, there is after-hours pediatric urgent care with access to top specialists from Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, South Florida’s only healthcare system exclusively for children. 2900 S. favorite pediatric hospital Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Imagine how many smiles have brightened the faces of children and parents since 1992, when baseball legend Joe DiMaggio raised over $4 million to open the doors of the children’s hospital at Memorial Regional. Well, you don’t have to imagine. Here’s a pretty good idea: In that first year, 2,000 patients were admitted. Jumping ahead 24 years, admissions and observations totaled over 8,700 in fiscal 2014. Now it’s one of the region’s leading pediatric facilities, with 224 beds, more than 650 physicians on staff and the area’s largest and most diverse group of board-certified pediatric specialists. And with its expansion in 2011 into a four-story facility, Joe DiMaggio became South Florida’s newest freestanding children’s hospital. Designed with kids in mind, the 180,000-square-foot building features a colorful, whimsical décor and large murals to invite young patients into an uplifting environment that helps turn the “Power of Play” into a healing force. The playful approach is extended to each floor’s theme of sports, arts, games or dreams, as well as to the patient rooms, all of which are private and wired for movies, video games, the Internet and educational programs. And here’s a cool plus: Room-service meals are available any time of day. Conine Clubhouse, named for ex-Marlins great Jeff Conine is located on-campus to provide a convenient temporary home for patients’ families. “Such a wonderful children’s hospital,” says Anabel Herrera of Davie. “Gives each child such warm and loving attention.” Thanks, Joe. 1005 Joe DiMaggio Dr., Hollywood, 954-265-5324, jdch.com

HEALTH & FITNESS favorite pediatric dentist Dr. Marisabel Olivera, Journey Kids Dental A child’s smile is her top priority, says Dr. Olivera, and the winning smiles at her practice are a result of its personal, kid-friendly approach as much as its gentle, expert dentistry. As Nikki Dyer of Fort Lauderdale describes it: “I have been taking my son to this amazing pediatric dentist for years. She is so warm and loving towards him always. It feels more like an extended family rather than a dental office.” Certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Olivera completed dental training from Nova Southeastern University and post-doctorate training in pediatric dentistry at Brookdale University Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y., where she was chief resident. “I am passionate in caring for those with special needs,” she adds. Attesting to that is Wilma Correa of Pembroke Pines: “Dr. Olivera and her staff are the most caring and loving. She has been taking care of my autistic son for over 5 years and I would not change her for anyone.” 4800 NE 20 Terrace, Fort Lauderdale, 954-727-9865, journeykidsdental.com

favorite urgent care Baptist Health Urgent Care Let’s say you wake up on a Saturday morning with a bad bout of the flu. You sure don’t want to spend the weekend at the emergency room. No appointment is necessary to be treated for minor injuries and ailments such as earaches, fevers, sore throats or flu symptoms. Patients are seen in order of medical priority, and the charges are less than those of Baptist Health hospitals, which have been serving the South Florida community since 1960. PETS

favorite boarding facility favorite groomer Barker’s Lane Make no bones about it, Barker’s Lane is first-class when it comes to making pets look and feel fabulous. Not only does the business provide high-quality, professional grooming, but the locale also touts specialty services including canine massages, dog yoga classes, pawdicures and teeth brushing. If a basic bath, blow dry and brush is what you are looking for, Barker’s does that too. Alicia D. of Fort Lauderdale says her pet “comes out looking great and smelling fantastic.” 6963 Stirling Rd., Davie, 954-581-1177, barkerslane.com

Country Inn Pet Resort When the humans are away, the dogs will play. With three acres of outdoor recreational space, there is plenty of room for Fido to run free with his four-legged friends while you are at work, on vacation, or simply treating your dog to a day of indulgence. Pooches can doggiepaddle through one of the bone-shaped pools, frolic in the field, or kick back in the pawcuzzi during their stay. Pampered pets can also receive some posh add-on extras including private spa packages, nail services and TLC in their suite. Owners can tune into one of many web cams throughout the day to see what their furry family members are up to. Country Inn also accommodates feline guests with Kitty Cabins and private play sessions. Debbie Shapiro of Plantation says the amenities here are unmatched and staff members are “people who love the animals.” 2100 S. Flamingo Rd., Fort Lauderdale, 954-424-6000, countryinnpetresort.com

favorite dog park Barkham at Markham For dogs that dig the social scene, this is the place to be. Here, canines can play leash-free with fellow tail-waggers in the smooth Bermuda sod. The dog park includes two spacious fenced-in spaces for pups to explore depending on their size. There are also asphalt paths for walking or running with your pooch, shelters for shade, water fountains and a dog wash area. You might expect Barkham to be boisterous, but not so, says Lisa Bennett of Davie: “It is quiet and peaceful.” If you plan to go, make sure to purchase a dog park pass at the park office ahead of time. The cost is $5/day or $25/year. Proof of current vaccinations is required. 16001 W. State Road 84, Sunrise, 954-357-8868, broward.org/parks

Sleep-away FACINGyourFEARS BY HEIDI SMITH LUEDTKE, PH.D.

If your kids are going to sleep-away camp this summer, you may be wrestling with worries and what-ifs. What if he wets the bed? What if the other kids are cliquish or mean? Will the camp director call me if she’s miserable?

“M

uch of our anxiety as parents stems from the fact that there are so many things we cannot control in our children’s lives,” says Paul Donahue a clinical psychologist and author of Parenting Without Fear. You may worry that without structure kids won’t be able to handle routine tasks like showering, brushing teeth or getting dressed. One mom I know felt so sure her son wouldn’t change clothes at camp that she packed his items — one pair of underwear, shorts, shirt, and socks — in gallon-size Ziploc bags, labeled with the days of the week. Because parents focus so much on kids’ needs, it’s hard to step back. Coverage of natural disasters and child predators makes the world seem scary. “Concern about the safety of children has become something of a national obsession,” Donahue observes. Even though our protective instincts keep us on edge, sometimes we have to trust others to care for our kids, and trust our kids to look out for themselves. Fear of letting go can also be driven by our own uncertainty about who we are without our kids and what we’ll do while they’re away. Without baseball practice, piano lessons, bedtime routines and movie night, our lives would be slower and saner and… emptier.   Don’t let worries weigh you down. Use them as an opportunity to confront your own needs for safety, control, and closeness. Here’s how: STEP BACK. Anxieties have a way of sucking you in. Your thoughts and emotions may be swirling like a tornado around you. Get out of the eye of the storm and reflect on your feelings. What (exactly) are your worries? Write them down so you can face them head on.

camp jitters

QUESTION YOUR ASSUMPTIONS. Fears may be fueled by irrational beliefs. Kids don’t suffer serious malnutrition from week-long candy binges. And wearing dirty clothes won’t kill them either. Concerned your temperamental child won’t fit in socially? Allow for the possibility she’ll find buddies to hang out with all on her own. Don’t let your beliefs limit kids’ potential. KEEP GOALS IN MIND. Ultimately, parents want kids to become self-reliant, says Donahue, and building self-reliance requires parents do less, not more for their kids. Camp builds competence and independence. Give your kids time to stretch beyond their comfort zones.   HAVE A PLAN. Keep anxieties in control by making a plan for how you’ll use your “time off.” Schedule special time with siblings who aren’t going camping. Plan a romantic date or overnight getaway with your spouse. Learn something new or catch up on your favorite shows. Stay busy (but in a good way). You deserve a change of pace, too.   SHARE STORIES. One sure-fire way to break out of anxiety

is to remember and share the fun times you had at camp with your kids. Tell them where you went and what you did. The time you flipped your canoe over and got sopping wet in the lake shouldn’t be a secret. Kids love to hear about parents’ camp adventures.    STAY CONNECTED. The kids will be gone but not forgotten. Find fun postcards, print pictures of family pets, and collect care-package items to send. Getting mail from home makes kids feel special. Resist the urge to check in every day: kids need space. Send supplies so your kids can mail letters home. They’ll want to share their experiences and you’ll treasure their letters forever. Anxiety is understandable, but it shouldn’t stop you from sending kids off to camp. It’s likely that many of your cherished childhood memories involve nature, new friends, and time to explore on your own — summer camp offers all these opportunities and more. It’ll be okay if they stay up too late, eat burned marshmallows, or lose their swim goggles in the lake. Really.

Words of Wisdom »

The Multitasking Mama BY LISA A. BEACH

“I’ll be back out in a minute,” I said to my husband Kevin as we were sitting on the back porch reading the Sunday paper. “I need to go throw a load of laundry into the washer.” On my way upstairs to gather a load of white clothes, I notice my son’s soccer cleats on the steps. I gingerly pick up the smelly footwear, toss them onto his bedroom floor and run for the Lysol to eliminate that “teen boy smell” from his room. After spraying a hefty dose of disinfectant, I see a sports bottle sitting on my son’s dresser. The bottle’s dripping condensation just taunts me with the threat of an impending water stain, so I whisk it away to the dishwasher where it belongs. As I load the bottle into the dishwasher, I notice the haphazard way that things are just shoved into the top rack. Small ice cream bowls sit right-side-up, just waiting to collect water. Knives perch precariously, ready to slice off a fingertip at any moment. Cups lay sideways, as if they were just tossed in arbitrarily. For God’s sake, does no one in this family have spatial awareness? You can fit eight more glasses in here! While rearranging the top rack, I notice an open box of cereal that someone left on the counter from breakfast three hours earlier. Would it kill anyone to close a box around here? Or put it away? Hoping the Frosted Flakes have not turned to floppy flakes, I close up the box and put it back in the cupboard. I look on the shelf below and realize we’re down to our last can of cat food.

As I write “cat food” on our grocery list posted above the phone, I notice a reddish smudge (blood? ketchup?) stuck to the receiver. Ew, gross. I grab the canister of wipes and clean the phone smudge with the vigor of a surgeon’s pre-op scrub. Since I used the last wipe, I toss the empty canister into the recyclable container, causing the overflowing plastic bottles to fall all over the floor. I gather up the bottles, carry everything out to the larger recyclable container outside, and dump it all in. On my way back inside, I step over a puddle. A puddle on a rain-free weekend? Who left the hose on? I wonder, as I walk over to shut off the faucet and head back into the house. Feeling productive, I realize that I’ve just prevented a fall on our stairs, a smell overtaking our second floor, a water stain, a finger amputation, a box of cereal from going stale, a starving kitty, a communicable disease from spreading via our phone and a higher water bill next month. I am one multitasking mama, I think as I walk with a get-’er-done swagger. “What took you so long?” Kevin asked, as I walked back out to the porch 30 minutes later. “I thought you were just starting a load of laundry.” Oh crap.
