Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital | Pediatric Heart Transplant Program

Celebrating Seven Years of Second Chances Ariana was 2 years old when she was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy – a rare heart condition. During her teen years she started to experience symptoms of heart failure. “We determined she would need a mechanical heart device to get her strong enough for a transplant,” says Maryanne Chrisant, MD, Medical Director of Heart Failure, Cardiomyopathy and Transplant.

Ariana is one of 40 children who have received successful heart transplants since our Pediatric Heart Transplant Program was launched seven years ago.

In the summer of 2017, Ariana became the first child at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital to be implanted with a ventricular assist device, called the HeartWare. Two months later Ariana’s family got the call at 3am. “They said they had a heart,” her mom Adriana recalled.

Watch Ariana’s heart transplant journey at JDCH.com/Transplant

After a successful heart transplant, Ariana is ready to start the next chapter of her life. “Words have not been invented to describe how I feel,” says Adriana. “Ariana’s going to have two birthdays now.”

Here Come the Clydesdales

I

t doesn’t seem like coincidence that the advent of St. Patrick’s Day is aligning with the arrival of the horses that beer made famous. Maybe it’s just the luck of the Irish — but the Clydesdales are parading back to Fort Lauderdale. There will be three occasions to see the world-famous four-legged stars of Budweiser commercials. The first is the more family-friendly of two March 7 appearances at the FLPD Stables at Holiday Park. From 10am-6pm, visitors to the free public viewing can not only see the celebrated horses but also meet the Fort Lauderdale Police Department

horses and tour their stables. There will also be a petting zoo and, naturally, pony rides. From 7-11pm, the event transforms into An Evening With the Clydesdales, with an Irish band and dancers, private tours of the Clydesdale stables and refreshments included in the $50 per person ticket price. Proceeds benefit the Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale St. Patrick’s Day parades. Speaking of which, the Fort Lauderdale parade is the third way to see the eight-horse team in action, starting at noon March 10 along Las Olas Boulevard. For more info, visit www.stpatsftl.com

MODS TAKES IT OUTSIDE Visitors to the Museum of Discovery and Science will soon have a whole lot more to do outdoors than marvel at the Great Gravity Clock out front. Beginning March 23, its new Science Park will expand the museum’s hands-on learning experiences out into a family-based, fresh-air oasis of discovery. The Science Park’s giant, full-body exhibits will demonstrate key principles of physics and engineering while also providing entertainment and group interaction. The skill-based experiences and environment are intended to encourage open-ended experimentation in the physical sciences and the development of sciencethinking skills.

12

B R O W A R D F A M I LY L I F E

Among the engagingly named interactive exhibits are: Bottle Rockets, Cool Fan, Giant Levers, Kaleidoscopes, Pulleys, Roller Coaster, Solar Tree, Sound Station, Sun Spotter, The Forest, Wheel Roll — and the sure-to-be-popular, Tennis Ball Launcher. The Science Park features an activity guide created by 50 students from Deerfield Beach Middle School who participated in an innovative museum program, Science in Action, in which they learned the exhibit’s design process. The Museum of Discovery and Science is at 401 SW Second St., Fort Lauderdale. For more information call 954-467-MODS (6637) or visit www.mods.org

THE 4-1-1 on H2O From the Everglades to the ocean to all the pools, lakes and canals in between, there aren’t many areas of the country whose identity is as wed to water as South Florida’s. But the connection runs even deeper than that — and that’s where Water Matters Day comes in. Highlighting the importance of water as a precious resource, Broward County’s premier environmental event will be held for the 16th year on March 10 at Tree Tops Park in Davie. With workshops, exhibits and other activities, the free, familyfriendly celebration focuses on the need to conserve and protect water for people, plants and animals. It also demonstrates the impact daily activities have on water resources and the natural environment. In small-group sessions, landscaping and gardening experts explain how to make yards less water-dependent and more inviting to native wildlife. One of the most popular covers how to create a NatureScape of environmentally friendly landscaping, with tips on plant selection and placement, proper use of fertilizer, pesticides, and more. There’s also plenty of entertainment and, for the kids, there are activities like planting flowers to take home. Freebies for the entire family include the popular Native Tree and Plant Giveaway, in which attendees visit at least 12 booths to “earn” native and drought-tolerant plants. Approximately 2,400 trees, shrubs, groundcovers and tree seedlings were given away at last year’s celebration, which was attended by a record 4,320 residents and 57 exhibitors. The park is located at 3900 SW 100 Ave. For more information, visit www.Broward.org/WaterMatters or call 954-519-0328.

Fun in the Sun Expo SENIORS vs. SENIORS in Margate So, maybe you watched the Winter Olympics last month and got motivated to get up, get out

In the outdoor sports and recreational mecca that is South Florida, the sun shines as invitingly on those who have disabilities as those who do not. For those who do — those who’ve suffered strokes or other traumatic injuries — March 31 is the day to get out and be a part of it all. That’s the day the fourth-annual Adaptive Sports and Recreation Expo gives them the opportunity — for some, the rare opportunity — to enjoy such activities as wheelchair basketball, hand cycling, disc golf, remote-control airplanes, fishing, and adaptive soccer, sailing, water skiing and scuba diving. From 11am-3pm at Markham Park in Sunrise, the free event is designed to boost the physical and mental health of people who’ve suffered strokes, lost the use of limbs or are coping with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. The expo, attended by more than 300 last year, also includes Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Kids Play Zone, as well as resources designed to provide adaptive equipment for a variety of sports, activities and lifestyle management. Registration is required for the adaptive scuba diving, adaptive water-skiing and remote-control airplanes. Markham Park is at 16001 W. State Road 84. For more information, call at 954-357-8868 or visit mhs.net/calendar/rehab/adaptive-sports-expo

Welcome to Burger Heaven OK, if you love burgers — no, we mean if you LOVE burgers — you just may want to stop eating altogether sometime before March 23. We’re not talking about going on a diet. We’re talking about getting in training — because it’s time for Riverwalk Burger Battle™ IX. A smorgasbord for burgerlovers, the event is also a challenge for top local restaurants and burger joints whose chefs show off their culinary creativity and grilling skills for about

1,200 people along theNew River at downtown Fort Lauderdale’s Huizenga Plaza. A $45 general admission ticket includes unlimited burger-tasting, a French-Fry Bar and three drink tickets. At $125, VIP tickets throw in an open bar, speciality bites and other amenities. The battle also includes a burger-eating contest, live music and plenty of adult beverages. A trophy will be awarded to the winning eatery by a team of industry judges, and guests will select a Fan Favorite. For many chefs, this is serious business. One recent winner said he worked on his prize gourmet creation for a month. Now, that’s a burger fit for a king. For more information, call 954-468-1541, ext.208, or visit www.goriverwalk.com

and be something more than just an armchair athlete. Well, here’s something just for you — the Margate Senior Games. Held March 5-9 at various locations throughout the city, the 39th annual event is open to anyone age 60 and older. Unless you just want to watch others compete though, you’ve got to hustle — entries are only accepted until March 1. Endorsed by the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, the event pits hundreds of seniors in individual and team sports competitions, including horseshoes, shuffleboard, golf-putting, pickleball, Pinochle, mixed doubles tennis, basketball free throw, petanque and bocce ball. Indoor games such as Wii Bowling, Wii Table Tennis, billiards, poker, dominos and bowling will also be featured. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be presented at a March 12 awards ceremony at the Northwest Focal Point Senior Center, which hosts the event with the Margate Parks and Recreation Department. Entry applications and a schedule of events are available at www.margatefl.com; the parks department, 6199 NW 10 St.; and the senior center, 6009 NW 10 St.

MINDINGthe GRANDKIDS? A lot has changed since grandparents raised their own little ones. A local pediatrician explains seven new rules every grandparent should know.

T

ell me if this ever happens to you: You’re trying to engage your grandchild in conversation — How are you? How’s school? Is that a real tattoo? — but you

can’t make eye contact because that precious face is glued to the laptop monitor or cell phone screen. When that happens, and it happens a lot, it’s hard not to think about how much things have changed since today’s grandparents raised their own kids. And that goes for babies and toddlers, too. The changing rules on raising the young ones may not be as hard to keep up with as, say, new apps for your cell phone, but they do continue to evolve at a rate that can even catch parents off-guard from the birth of one child to the next. So imagine how they can confuse grandparents,

1

SLEEPING AND SOLIDS

OLD RULE: If you want babies to sleep longer and not feed so frequently, you can add some rice cereal or oatmeal to their milk during bottle feeds. It may help fill them up and also help calm their fussiness. NEW RULE: The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends not adding foods other than breastmilk or formula to the diet until babies are at least 4 to 6 months old. Introducing solids before 4 months is associated with increased weight gain and obesity, both in infancy and early childhood. When solids are introduced, a variety of flavors and textures is recommended. Children also generally need to be exposed to foods multiple times before they accept them. So, start a particular food for three to four days in a row before trying something different.

who may be set in their ways yet are more and more called on to babysit or, in many families, help with rearing their grandchildren. Even if the call to duty is only temporary — for example, giving an exhausted new mom an extended break to catch up on her sleep — it’s important that grandparents are familiar with not only the parents’ ideas about safety but also the recommendations of pediatric experts. To help set the record straight, we consulted one — Dr. Tamika Maxwell, the lead physician in Pediatric Associates’ Lauderdale Lakes office. She examines seven old and new ideas about caring for children — and why the rules have changed. 36

2

PACIFIERS

OLD RULE: Binkies interfere with breastfeeding. NEW RULE: Put babies to sleep with a pacifier, even if they’re being nursed exclusively. There are not sufficient studies showing pacifiers cause interference with breastfeeding. If a baby wants to suck beyond what nursing or bottle-feeding provides, a pacifier will satisfy that need. Plus, the routine sucking action of a pacifier while sleeping also appears to protect against Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The use of pacifiers is supported up to 1 year. In an exclusively breastfed baby, the AAP recommends waiting to introduce the pacifier until after breastfeeding is established, usually by 4 weeks and before the peak age for SIDS. A pacifier should not be used to replace or delay meals, nor coated with sweeteners — and to prevent strangulation, it should never be tied to the crib or the child.

3

4

SAFE SLEEP OLD RULE: It’s OK to put babies to sleep on their side. NEW RULE: Healthy babies should always be put to sleep on their back. Peaking at 2 to 3 months and occurring until 1 year, SIDS still remains the leading cause of death for infants outside the newborn period. Original AAP recommendations in 1992 discouraged tummy positioning during sleep and encouraged back or side positioning, which cut SIDS cases in half. In 2000, AAP emphasized back-only positioning after research showed that further decreased SIDS incidence. The golden rules for safe sleep: Place babies on their backs on a firm mattress in their own crib or bassinet, co-rooming — but not co-sleeping — with their caregivers in a moderate to cool temperature environment.

BEDDING

OLD RULE: Crib bumpers keep babies from banging their head. NEW RULE: Keep all soft bedding, including bumpers, out of the crib. Many studies show that bumpers and fashionable bedding pose a suffocation risk. It’s also recommended that infants sleep on a flat, firm mattress with only a fitted sheet. No pillows, stuffed toys or blankets other than one used to swaddle the infant should be in the crib.

5

6

ALLERGIES OLD RULE: Don’t give allergenic foods like peanuts until the child is 3. NEW RULE: Give small amounts of peanut butter to babies in their first year. Studies have shown that the rate of food allergies in children has risen significantly since the onset of delaying food introduction. In countries where a variety of foods, including peanut products, are introduced as early as 6 months, there are fewer children with food allergies. U.S. pediatricians now recommend introducing a mixture of foods, including peanuts, to infants early on, because it’s not only safe to give a spoonful or two of peanut products but it also decreases the risk of allergy by 80 percent. Never give a baby whole peanuts until after age 5 as it poses a choking hazard.

TOOTHPASTE

OLD RULE: Use fluoride-free baby toothpaste until age 2. NEW RULE: Use fluoride toothpaste as soon as baby gets a tooth. The old rule was driven by concerns that children would swallow unsafe amounts of fluoride. Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in U.S. children and has become more common over the past 10 years. A 2014 AAP report stated that fluoride is effective for cavity prevention in children and the recommendation changed, but fluoride is still to be used sparingly. A smear of toothpaste the size of a grain of rice should be used up to age 3. After that it can be increased to pea-sized. Over-the-counter fluoride rinse is not recommended for children younger than 6.

7

CAR SEATS OLD RULE: Babies should sit in a rear-facing car seat until their first birthday. NEW RULE: Keep a baby facing backwards until at least 2 — or until exceeding the seat’s height or weight limit. A rear-facing car seat helps to properly support the head, neck and spine of infants and toddlers in a crash by distributing the force of the collision over the entire body. The rule of turning the seat at 20 pounds and 1 year of age is not the best option and should only be considered a minimum standard.

Evenings Out KICKING BACK WITH MUSIC UNDER THE STARS BY GREG CARANNANTE

I

t’s a balmy winter evening. Onstage a country rock band is playing — what else? — Sweet Home Alabama. A lone couple dances arm-in-arm in the large area in front of the crowd and, back by the entrance, a woman and her young granddaughter swing their hands together to the beat. Just off to the right, kids frolic in a bounce house next to a fenced-off area where grown-ups play a serious game of cornhole. On the opposite side sits a small, pungent pen of goats, available for petting. It’s the inaugural Sounds of the Town concert, and a little petting farm and a country rock band seem just about right. After all, we are in Davie — in the most appropriate of venues, the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. On the hard-packed dirt infield where more often cowboys rope calves and daredevils stand on galloping horses, over 200 folks mostly of parent or grandparent age spread out in folding chairs, grooving to one of two bands and imbibing in fare from food trucks and vendors out in the courtyard. Folding tables with various

wares form a makeshift bazaar at the indoor/outdoor arena. It’s a laid-back scene, and the band isn’t bad either. The Sounds of the Town concert series is just one of many free outdoor music parties thrown by cities or other organizations throughout the year. They often not only reflect the personality of their community but also provide an enjoyable evening out as South Florida weather hits peak-season form. Davie’s quarterly concerts kicked off in January, with upcoming shows May 11 and Sept. 14, from 6-10pm at the rodeo grounds, 6591 SW 45 St. The series replaces the “Concerts In The Park” that were held at the Old Davie School Historical Museum. “We were always running out of room there,” says Anna Francis of Davie’s special events department. “So we started the series at the rodeo grounds, which is a covered venue and where there’s plenty of room.” Apparently, it was a good move, as the new location drew twice as big a crowd as the old one did, she says. And there’s plenty of room to grow — the stands at the 5,000-capacity rodeo arena were completely empty for the January show. Here is a sampling of music series presented throughout the county. You are encouraged to bring your lawn chair or blanket. Please consult each city’s recreation department website for more information.

My lifelong BFFs — the ones I’ve known since my high school days — live in the Northeast. They have nursed me through everything, from braces to heartbreaks. If I didn’t live a thousand miles away, I’m sure we’d still be meeting every few weeks for drinks. But as a stay-at-home mom, my circle of local gal pals has ebbed and flowed over the past 18 years. Recently, it’s ebbing more than flowing. Many of my “mommy friends” have drifted away, and as I transition back to a freelance-writing career, there’s the final nail in my social coffin: I can’t tap into the built-in communal network of a brick-and-mortar job. So what’s a socially starved middle-aged woman to do? Enter, The Dating Game – Friends Version. No game show host needed this time around, but the same rules still apply: Meet new people; Ask questions; Find a match. PHASE I: GET IN THE GAME For starters, I join a few local groups to dip my toe in the waters. I’m an introvert at heart, so I need a very large pool noodle to keep me afloat in these sink-or-swim social situations. But I’m putting myself out there anyway. I got this! PHASE 2: BUILD ANTICIPATION With two active teens, our color-coded family calendar is filled with lots of the boys’ green and red entries. The lone, ironically blue entry: my upcoming dentist appointment. Seriously? That’s the extent of my social engagements? I right this wrong by adding “Mom’s Night Out” in big blue letters — on a weeknight! I’m giddy. PHASE 3: PREPARE The night of my “first date” arrives — Bunco night, a few hours of drinks and dice guaranteed to yield more fun than my typical night doing a last-minute load of laundry.

As I anticipate my Big Night Out, I face a first-date dilemma. What should I wear? I want to evoke just the right image so I search my closet for something that doesn’t scream “I-haven’t-been-out-since-the-Friends-finale.” I realize that my clothes can be separated into three categories: Church Service/ PTA Meeting, Former Career (dating back to even a few ’80s relics complete with shoulder pads) and Comfortably Casual. Do I own nothing fun and trendy? Apparently not. I opt for a few “timeless” pieces (striped T-shirt and forgettable pants) from my no couture casual collection. PHASE 4: SHOW UP I arrive at Bunco and do a quick scan of the ladies. OK, good. No one looks like a serial killer. (Of course, two wines later, everybody looks friendly.) As the night progresses, I meet about a dozen women, who — just like me — want to get out of the house and have some fun. We exchange war stories (i.e., strayed career paths, divorces, health issues) with a bit of a filter — we don’t want to get too intimate on a first date. We share appetizers and sip. And we laugh. A lot. The best part? I score two phone numbers. It looks like I’m going on a second date. Tonight’s Special… Delivery MEAL SERVICE COMES WITH A SIDE OF SANITY BY SARAH BROUSSARD WEAVER

M

y family recently began receiving boxes from one of those companies

that send overpriced preportioned ingredients and a recipe in environment-killing packaging. We signed up for this even though I could buy more groceries for less money. Even though these companies are arguably a sign of First-World laziness and privilege. Even though I could shop for and cook the same meals myself from recipes on the Internet. The fact is, I’m at a time in my life where I just won’t do it. I’m finishing up my bachelor’s degree. My husband has a job in IT that requires late nights and travel. We have four children 13 and under, and they all need help with their homework and wear clothes that must be washed. The dishes pile up even though I buy paper plates. I try to write in my spare time. I’m just not going to regularly research recipes, load up my grocery cart and actually cook the stuff before it goes bad. I am exhausted just thinking about it. Even with all these excuses, I couldn’t make myself pull the trigger on a meal-delivery service. I fantasized about it but it was my husband who signed us up. He saw an ad and thought it sounded like a good idea. He said it would teach our 13- and 10-year-olds how to cook. This brought visions of burned fingers and fires, but I agreed. Their first recipe was made under the watch of a babysitter. We came home to delicious roasted cod with coconut basmati rice and bok choy. The cod had been turned over too often and broke into small chunks but it tasted better than a lot of restaurant food. I was in love. Not all the recipes have been that good, but they were all way better than hot dogs or frozen lasagna. And my kids have learned what bok choy is and how to cook it, something that would never have happened under my watch. They now know what “sauté” and “brown” mean. An unforeseen plus is that I am also learning new cooking terms and skills. Yesterday I had to make homemade aioli. It

was very easy but it would have never occurred to me. Last week I made fish that wasn’t fried (I’m from Louisiana, so fried fish is the definition of fish). I roasted a mix of three kinds of mushrooms — cremini, shitake, and maitake — without having to search for them in the store and garnished — garnished! — things with chopped parsley and lemon. My kids are learning how to cook and so am I. I save the recipes so that I have good dishes I feel confident in making later because I have done it before. It’s worth paying more at this point. This is my reassurance to myself that I’m not awful for paying extra for convenience, and a reminder that the frozen lasagnas were convenient too (also full of preservatives and lacking in vegetables). And if anyone out there is in the same boat, I want you to know that I’m with you. If you need an expensive box of ingredients delivered to your front door, I get you. We’re doing a good job. We’re making it. Sometimes we make it from scratch and plate it and sometimes it’s a frozen meal, but the bellies are full and the faces are happy. Good job.
