YESENIA GOMEZ ’ 25 Mercedes Domenech BULAC Endowed Scholarship recipient Yesenia Gomez ’25 is a Brown-RISD dual degree candidate from Fullerton, California, studying mechanical engineering and industrial design. She serves on the e-board of Brown/ RISD’s STEAM club and is active in Environmental Justice at Brown, Providence Youth Advocacy, Society of Women Engineers, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and the U-FLi Scholars. Yesenia also works as a Brown RISD Dual Degree Peer Advisor.
“ As a low-income, queer, first-generation chicana student, the groups that I identify with are severely underrepresented in engineering. I want to be the change that I wish I saw in the field. I bring experiences to the table that others may not be able to, and I use these experiences to amplify the voices of those who are unheard. “Being a recipient of the Mercedes Domenech BULAC Endowed Scholarship has allowed me to join multiple extracurricular activities that foster change both on College Hill and the surrounding community. I’ve also been able to take advantage of the Open Curriculum and spend more time studying. Because I don’t have to worry about the cost of tuition, I can focus on my classes.”
“ Students change me in so many positive ways. They inspire me and give me perspective. It’s reciprocal; that’s how life is—an exchange of ideas and experiences, with a common goal of being useful to society.” Mercedes Domenech
