Brown Medical Annual Fund Impact Report

2021–2 2

I am thrilled to have joined the Brown community during an incredibly exciting time for The Warren Alpert Medical School. This past academic year, we kicked off 50 Years of Medicine, which honors the distinctive elements of Brown’s approach to medical training and biomedical innovation and celebrates decades of impact in medical education and research. We also announced the planning of a new integrated life sciences building that will provide state-of-the-art laboratory space and infrastructure to translate cutting-edge science to patient care and positively impact the health of individuals and society in Rhode Island and beyond. At the core of all these milestone are the people — our 2,500 biology, medical, and clinical faculty; more than 600 medical students; nearly 1,000 residents and fellows; and a community of over 10,000 alumni, parents, and friends whose ongoing support provides us the necessary resources to fulfill our mission of improving the health and wellness of all.

Thanks to donor support, the Brown Medical Annual Fund (BMAF) raised over $1.4 million, providing the foundation for innovative medical education by supporting scholarship and financial aid, funding for the Doctoring and Scholarly Concentrations programs, and enhancing a variety of research and enrichment opportunities. We also exceeded our goal of $25,000 and were able to award the Advancing Diversity in Medicine Term Scholarship, providing financial support to a student underrepresented in medicine. The medical school community is strengthened when we have students of diverse backgrounds and experiences, and this scholarship ensures that we are able to attract and retain them. I am humbled by the generosity of the community and inspired by what lies ahead. Thank you for your continued support.

Mukesh K. Jain, M.D. Dean of Biology and Medicine

The Brown Medical Annual Fund (BMAF) is the foundation for innovative medical education at Brown. It provides students with the resources needed to pursue a variety of research, educational, and clinical experiences. Every BMAF dollar is put to use immediately, ensuring a robust experience in the classroom and beyond while providing our students with valuable opportunities for growth. The BMAF supports financial aid, the Doctoring program, Scholarly Concentrations, and summer research stipends. Approximately 55% of donations go directly to medical student financial aid.

The Advancing Diversity in Medicine Term Scholarship is a critical part of the BMAF and provides financial aid to students underrepresented in medicine. Over $31,000 was raised in FY22, helping Brown attract and retain the most talented students.

STUDENTS IN THEIR OWN WORDS

“ The Doctoring course has been instrumental in my time as a medical student. It reminded me of why I chose to go into medicine — to treat patients. Between the weekly in-class sessions and community site visits, Doctoring has given me the opportunity to practice my clinical skills and actively engage with patients. Because of this course and your generous support, I feel better prepared for clinical years and a career as a physician.” Jasmine Gibson ’21 MD’25

“ Pursuing the Translational Research in Medicine Scholarly Concentration and conducting structured basic science research at the Diane N. Weiss Center for Orthopaedic Trauma has helped me to take great strides in becoming a physician-scientist. The future of health care requires collaboration between clinical practice and basic science research — one informs the other. I strive to become a physician who can bridge the gap between these two domains of medicine in the pursuit of improving patient outcomes. The Warren Alpert Medical School is preparing me to do just that.” Benjamin Stone ScM’20 MD’25

“ The summer stipend was fundamental in my ability to stay in Providence after my second year to conduct research aimed at improving referral rates to cardiac rehab for patients who had recently undergone percutaneous coronary interventions. This project was instrumental in connecting me to interventional cardiologists and learning more about the interdisciplinary connections of cardiology to other fields, which was monumental in shaping my interests in pursuing a career in cardiology. None of this would have been possible without the Brown Medical Annual Fund.” Preston Nicely MD’24

“ I am a medical student who comes from a small town in the mountains of rural New Mexico. When I was growing up I dreamed of being a doctor, but I never imagined doing so at such a prestigious institution so far from home. The scholarships I have received from The Warren Alpert Medical School have opened my horizons and created countless opportunities that I never would have had otherwise.” Alayna Barela MD’24

DONORS IN THEIR OWN WORDS

“ I’ve had a meaningful career in primary care medicine with the opportunity to work with patients from underserved communities. While in leadership roles at various Community Health Centers, it was frustrating to see the continued dearth of young, Black physicians and other underrepresented groups in medicine. I support this scholarship because diversifying the medical student body and ensuring their success is critical to creating equitable health care for all.” Kamau E. Karanja ’90 MD’94

“ Seeing the tremendous work by these talented students makes it all the more rewarding to contribute to the Brown Medical Annual Fund.” Ritesh and Bharti Rathore P’24 MD’28
