GREAT THINGS

3

I’m very excited about the year that we are beginning together. I believe the opening of our new spaces is part of a larger work God is doing in the life of our church. It’s a time full of possibility for each of us who call Browncroft home and for those who God may lead to our church in the days ahead. This magazine holds key information about the events surrounding the opening of our newly renovated auditorium building and newly expanded children’s theater. I hope you’re planning on taking part in our special dedication service and grand-opening celebration this fall. It’s our hope that these spaces will be used to bring new people and families into a life-changing relationship with Jesus. You will also find here key dates and times for our fall launch. With our reopening scheduled for late September many of our adult offerings will not begin until early October, but all kids and students will move up to their new classes September 9th. In the early fall I will be sharing a series of messages from the early chapters of the Book of Joshua. These chapters are about the preparation of the next generation of God’s people inheriting the promises given to their ancestors. The Jordan crossing represents a new beginning for the people of God. I believe we are at such a moment in the life of our ministry. Like the second generation in this account, we have before us the opportunity to go to new places as a church. God has also made promises to us, yet ones that will require new levels of commitment from each of us. ROB CATTALANI

SENIOR PASTOR

My prayer is that as individuals and as a congregation we will choose to trust God with more of ourselves. To go deeper in our commitment to Him and wider in our reach to the many around us who do not yet know peace and freedom found in a relationship with Jesus. Praying for you and for great things in our church.

“Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before.” JOSHUA 3:4A

INVITING PEOPLE INTO A LIFE-CHANGING RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS

“I learned about how others view God, their need for Him, their bravery to trust and believe in Him despite how it may negatively impact their lives.” KRISTEN BECK

THE REACH INITIATIVE: WOLOF UPDATE BY: KAREN WOOD Browncroft has a special focus on and concern for the Wolof people, an unreached people group in Senegal, West Africa. Out of over 3 million people, there are only about 200 Wolof believers. It is our passion to give every Wolof person an opportunity to consider the good news about Jesus in a meaningful way. Starting in 1999, Browncroft has steadily built a network of missionaries, organizations and churches who have the same vision. As such, we currently fund and engage actively with five missionary households, a private K – 10 school, a vocational training center for women, and a radio ministry. This year, as we near the 20th anniversary of our Wolof Partnership, we are renewing our commitment as a Reach partnership. In Pastor Rob’s words, “It is my hope to see a new generation from Browncroft engage the important work God is doing in Senegal today.” This is exactly what happened earlier this year as Family Ministry staffer Kristen Beck spent six weeks in Senegal assisting at the women’s vocational center. Kristen writes, “We are really in a unique position where the people who have come before me/us serving here have built trusting and loyal relationships, and that is SO important. That is a gift from God that has set us up to hopefully serve here as long as that relationship remains consistent and desiring honest feedback about what works and what doesn’t.”

Our missionary partners in Senegal were encouraged and helped by Kristen in their own ministry, as Kristen served in an extremely faithful and effective way. Not only that, she herself also grew as a disciple of Jesus. Kristen says, “I learned about how others view God, their need for Hime, their bravery to trust and believe in Him despite how it may negatively impact their lives.” We pray that 2019 will be a year of significant involvement in Senegal. What about you? Is God nudging you to join this strategic ministry? To get involved in the Wolof partnership, start on your knees! Ask God where he would lead you. Could you sponsor a child’s education, or a young woman’s vocational training? Could you follow our missionaries on social media and write encouraging words and prayers to them? Your involvement might be getting your small group to adopt one of our Wolof missionaries for prayer, or giving to the Wolof Fund (now available online). Perhaps 2019 might even be your year to go with one of our short-term teams: to work with a dental team, help at the women’s vocational center, teach ESOL, or even join with our newest initiative at a school for the Deaf in the capital city of Dakar. Talk to God about all this. Then get in touch with karen@browncroft. org to see how you can be a part of our Wolof Reach partnership!

FAMILY BAPTISM CELEBRATION November 11 | 6pm The day a child makes the decision to trust Jesus as their Savior is a huge milestone. There is no greater single decision that they could make. We believe that baptism is an important next step for them. Baptism is their way of telling their friends and family, “Hey, I’m a follower of Jesus!” Our baptisms for kids and students take place at an event we call Family Baptism Celebration. SMALL GROUPS REMIND US OF THE POWER OF THE GOSPEL Andrew, the pastor that oversaw small groups, approached me. At the time, I was in my twenties and working as a college admissions counselor in the Philadelphia area with a busy schedule. He began to walk towards me with that focused look of an important topic – you know, the “I’m about to ask you to take on a project” walk.

“Peter, would you be open to leading a small group?” Andrew asked me. As a single twenty-something, I did not feel I had much to offer the church. The questions started coming to me. Who would come to a small group I led? Do I have enough time to do it? A few weeks later, I found myself leading a small group. It included two couples with no kids and a college student. One of the couples graciously decided to host the group at their apartment as opposed to my trailer that looked like a twenty-something male lived there. The first two meetings felt strange. The talkers talked and the observers listened. The awkward silence was met with two people starting a sentence at the same time. It took us time to get to know each other. Soon the conversation flowed and we began to develop genuine care for each other. I will always remember the one night we had dinner together. We planned a potluck of eclectic proportion. One couple provided a spicy Indian curry dish. The other couple brought BBQ meatballs. The college student brought baked goods. I probably took an easy road by bringing drinks and paper products. That night we reflected on the past few weeks. We went from a small group of misfits and strangers to people who became like family. We prayed together. We cried together. We laughed together. Ultimately, each of us shared how we experienced the Gospel together. Though we eventually went our separate ways, this group has kept a very special place in my heart. As I think back to my experience in small groups, the person that changed the most was me. It took Jesus placing me in a group of people to see how His love could connect those who appear to have very little in common. I made mistakes as a leader in this group, but to my amazement people offered grace. More importantly, we cared for each other in a way that Jesus seemed present.

PETER ENGLERT

ADULT MINISTRIES DIRECTOR

We talk a lot about small groups at Browncroft. I hear a lot of the reasons why people hesitate to participate or lead. You’re busy. You’re an introvert. You’re afraid of commitment. What if on the other side of participating in a small group was experiencing the Gospel in a way you never have before? The Gospel is the Good News of Jesus’ Death and Resurrection: life-change in Jesus. Small groups are where life-change in Jesus happens. Jesus devoted three years of His life to 12 disciples.

“What if on the other side of participating in a small group was experiencing the Gospel in a way you never have before?”

When you commit to a small group of 6-12 people, you engage Scripture together, pray together, share life together, and have fun together. Opening our lives up to other people challenges us to change. In the Bible, there are over 40 verses about relating to “one another.” Because Jesus created us for community, we learn to become like Him in the context of other people. If you’re in a small group, I pray that you commit to grow personally and to encourage those around you to become more like Jesus. If you’re not in a small group, I hope you take the risk and the leap. You never know how God will work in your life and how God might place you to make a difference in the lives of others in your group.

MISSIONS AT BROWNCROFT Missions. . . Missionary. . . Hearing those words may catapult you back to images of pith helmets and Ugly Americans. But no! “Missionary” simply means “sent one.” In this case, the person doing the sending is Jesus, and the people being sent are his disciples: “As the Father has sent me,” Jesus says, “I am sending you” (John 20:21). Just as God the Father sent Jesus into the world to bring love, healing, hope and salvation, so Jesus has sent us, his followers, into the world for his glory. At Browncroft, we take this reality seriously and hold Global Engagement as one of our core values.

So. . . . . that means we’re all headed off to Papua New Guinea next week? Not necessarily (though don’t rule it out!). Missions at its simplest is Jesus sending us to take His Good News across barriers wherever and whatever they might be. It means beginning by praying for God’s grace-filled Message to run freely in the world, and for ears and hearts to be open. It means people willing to go in person to all the places where the Message hasn’t fully penetrated. It means encouraging, caring for, and funding such people in their work, even if it takes decades. It also means helping to light a fire in a new generation of men and women willing to go. Each of these five elements – praying, encouraging, giving, going, mobilizing—are at work in missions, and each also intersects with our five Browncroft missions environments. Take a look! MISSIONARIES: Know and help our missionary partners Take a mission trip to help our partners on the field. Complete your small group by adopting a missionary for care and encouragement. Celebrate their joys and empathize in their frustrations. Give to their support through the Missions Fund. Praise and worship God for what he is doing! It’s all part of missions! PERU PARTNERSHIP: Connect with an urban church in Lima. Learn about global Christianity from our sister church in Peru. Share with them what God is teaching us, and learn from them in a peer-to-peer relationship. Host your Peruvian brothers and sisters. Spread the Good News together here in Rochester, in Peru, and wherever God leads us to go!
