Report of Giving 2023-24

Page 1

Friends,

Last spring, current parents, faculty, alumni, and our Building Our Future Campaign Co-Chairs, were invited to take hard hat tours at 337 East 64th Street, the location of Browning’s new Upper School. I was privileged to be at one of those events. This year brings a myriad of additional opportunities for community members to see the spectacular work happening at the active construction site. The new building, scheduled to open, at least in part, in Spring 2025, will be nothing less than transformative for Browning and our boys.

To reach our $50 million Campaign goal, we need all members of the community to reach deep into your pockets and hearts and make Browning a philanthropic priority. This can be achieved with unrestricted stretch gifts to the Annual Fund for each remaining year of the Campaign and/or by pledging a larger, multi-year commitment

for a restricted purpose that is meaningful to you. However you choose to get involved, your gift will exemplify your faith in Browning’s mission and future. Thank you for joining us in this important endeavor. In closing, I specifically want to thank our Campaign Executive Committee, Owen Boger P ’30, ’32, Carolyn Lamphier P ’24, ’27, Elizabeth Miller P ’22, Jodi Schwartz P ’22, and Rachel Small P ’27, ’30, and again, our departing Trustee and Advancement Committee Chair Elizabeth Miller P ’22, for their amazing work and dedication this past year.

Members of the Browning Community,

There is much to affirm of our work over the last year. We were busy not only with our Upper School building project, but also expanding and refining our academic and extracurricular programs to better serve our students. Clearly, we made some headway, as 95% of our current parents— the highest in Browning history—showed their support by participating in the FY24 Annual Fund drive that ended on June 30, 2024. Thank you for your vote of confidence.

It was another Browning year characterized by excellence and enthusiasm across our academic and co-curricular programs. Our boys again gave us ample cause to be proud of their achievements, inspired by their efforts, and optimistic about the care and creativity they will bring to our world. None of this is possible without the support of our families and friends, and all of us at Browning are grateful for the generosity that enables our wonderful school to express itself so fully.

On the following pages I highlight some of our innovations and successes, from our work with our youngest students, to our Middle School students and to updates of the new Upper School building.

Sincerely,

CELEBRATIONS OF LEARNING

Lower School “Celebrations of Learning” invited families into classrooms to better experience the learning process. Presentations included personal timelines created in Grade 1, social studies research

on individual states undertaken by Grade 2, historical fiction writing and artwork produced in Grade 3, and creative writing and math projects incorporating the study of perimeter and area in Grade 4.

The Grade 1 boys published the inaugural issue of The First Grade Gazette, which included an exploration of newspapers and magazines, an informational session with one Grade 8 writer, and a morning “Coffee and the News” with families.

THE FIRST GRADE GAZETTE

MIDDLE AND UPPER SCHOOL LANGUAGES

Beginning fall 2024, Browning will no longer require Middle School students to study two languages. Focusing on one language will enable them to increase their proficiency through additional class time. Grade 6 students will choose among French, Spanish, or Latin, giving them 50% more instructional time for

the target language in Grades 7 and 8. This will also allow them to devote 60 more minutes each week to English, math, history, and science. Once students enter Upper School, they will have the option to add a second language, including introductory Mandarin, which will be offered beginning in Grade 9.

This past spring, as part of the History curriculum, Grade 6 boys embarked on an excursion to the China Folk House Retreat, a farmhouse saved from a dam in Yunnan, China and relocated to Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia. In this living classroom and museum, the boys engaged in hands-on study of ancient Chinese culture and cosmology through investigating architecture, folk art, and agriculture.

Meant to deepen students’ understanding of ancient China, the field trip also fostered community bonding. Students engaged in activities like basket weaving, gardening, wall building, fire starting, buckskin magic pouch making, and a hike to local waterfalls. Along with six faculty members who chaperoned the fourday trip, three seniors were invited to participate as counselors, providing guidance and fellowship.

CHINA FOLK HOUSE RETREAT

WORLD CELEBRATION DAY

Our schoolwide World Celebration Day continues to grow in popularity, and encourages students and families to share their cultures and background with the Browning community. Engaging with varied global traditions expands students’ understanding of the world beyond their immediate environment, and promotes empathy, respect, communication, and appreciation for diversity. Last spring, we showcased professional dancers from Ireland, Filipino table games, a Korean violin performance from a Grade 4 boy, an Indian henna tattoo station, and numerous cuisines from around the world.

ATHLETIC SUCCESSES

This past year sported a plethora of athletic successes, with 80% of Browning students participating in athletics, a figure much higher than both NYC public and independent school averages.

BROWNING’S MIDDLE SCHOOL CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM WERE THE NYCAL CHAMPS, WHILE THE TRACK TEAM CONSISTENTLY FINISHED AT THE TOP OF MANY EVENTS.

BROWNING HAD TWO NEW YORK CITY ATHLETIC LEAGUE (NYCAL) MVPS, ONE IN TABLE TENNIS AND THE OTHER IN GOLF.

OUR GOLF TEAM WON THE NYCAL TITLE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN BROWNING HISTORY.

ATHLETIC SUCCESSES

VARSITY SQUASH ADVANCED TO THE ATHLETIC CONFERENCE OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS (ACIS) FINAL AND WENT TO NATIONALS, BOTH FOR THE FIRST TIME IN BROWNING HISTORY.

VARSITY BASEBALL FINISHED WITH ITS BEST RECORD IN A DECADE, REACHING THE NYCAL CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL.

THE GRADE 7/8 BASEBALL TEAM FINISHED FIRST IN NYCAL, BECOMING CO-CHAMPIONS OF THE REGULAR SEASON.

THE NEW UPPER SCHOOL

In order to fund the new Upper School project, Browning borrowed a tax-exempt bond through Build NYC which consists of $20 million in long-term and $24 million in short-term debt. This financing is in addition to $20 million in expected philanthropic gifts, which accounts for 40% of our comprehensive Building Our Future Campaign $50 million goal. Alongside the $20 million in Facilities funding, other Campaign Priorities are $15 million in Annual Fund donations, and $7.5 million for each Financial Aid

and Programmatic support. As of June 30, 2024, we raised just over $26.1 million (52.2%) in gifts and pledges, which includes $8.9 million (44.7%) of our Facilities goal.

The eight-year Campaign is expected to conclude on June 30, 2027. While many spaces have already been spoken for, numerous naming opportunities are still available. For more information about the Campaign, please contact Bobbi Mark, Browning’s Chief Advancement Officer, at bmark@browning.edu or 212-935-4238.

THE NEW BUILDING WILL EXPAND OUR CURRICULAR AND EXTRACURRICULAR OFFERINGS

“It’s rare for a school in New York City to have the opportunity to build a learning space from scratch. The East 64th Street project has enabled us to do so. We’ve designed classrooms and gathering spaces based on research about how boys best learn, to encourage visible thinking, collaboration, and group presentations. By more than doubling the square footage of our school, we are able to extend course offerings so our boys are better able to gain distinctions in subjects about which they are most passionate.”

“The new facilities will enable Browning to attract and retain more student athletes, promoting enhanced sportsmanship and healthy lifestyles. A home-court advantage will build school spirit, allowing our athletes to feel good about themselves and justly proud in front of the community.”

CERTIFICATES OF DISTINCTION

Our successful Upper School Certificates of Distinction Program continues to build and attract intellectually curious students. This unique curriculum allows students who are self-directed and consistently

probe beyond assigned coursework to be recognized for their singular achievements, all while building both their knowledge base and their sense of agency.
