When Comments are Hateful and Contemptuous
Words spoken at a recent meeting of the Temecula Valley School Board about the late gay rights activist and icon, Harvey Milk, was stunning in its ignorance and hateful in its intent.
Perhaps what made the comment even more egregious was that it was made by the school board’s president, Dr. Joseph Komrosky.
Milk and a direct besmirching of his legacy for no reason other than to make a public display of Komrosky’s own small minded homophobia, an obvious indication he is possibly insecure in his own manhood.
By all accounts, the comment was not only over the top, it was unnecessary considering the conservative school board had enough votes to reject usage of an elementary school social studies book that included information about

In a contentious meeting at the Temecula Valley School Board, tensions ran high as a 3-2 vote resulted in the rejection of an elementary school social studies book featuring pioneering California gay rights activist, Harvey Milk. What made the scene even uglier was the accusation made by the board's president, Dr. Joseph Komrosky, labeling Milk as a pedophile just before the vote to ban the book.
Dr. Komrosky's remark sent shockwaves through the meeting, prompting concerned community members to question the motive behind his statement. "My question is, why even mention a pedophile?" demanded Dr. Komrosky,
as the room filled with a mix of confusion, anger, and disbelief.
Unfortunately, this emotionally charged gathering in Temecula is not an isolated incident. Similar scenarios have played out across Southern California and the nation, as communities grapple with demands to restrict discussions on race and sexual orientation within school boards.
The ongoing conflict over books has become a hot-button issue, particularly in states controlled by Republicans. Governor Gavin Newsom of California, aware of the growing tension, intervened last summer through a series of commercials aired in Florida. Newsom, along with California State Superintendent Tony
freedom we all must protect and cultivate," the letter emphasized.
Support for the letter has emerged from concerned parents, such as Jenna Schwartz, a mother within the Los Angeles Unified School District, who played a key role in establishing a group called Parents Supporting Teachers. Schwartz expressed her concerns, stating, "I think that our governor and the AG are looking at what's happening in these red states, and we can see the future. We know what happens when you dilute education for children. They become uneducated adults. We can't let that happen here."

In 1849, Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman to earn a medical degree in the United States. Despite the backlash and obstacles she faced, Blackwell went on to open a New York Infirmary for Women and Children in 1857 with her sister and a colleague.
“She played an important role in both the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as a social reformer, and was a pioneer in

promoting education for women in medicine. Her contributions remain celebrated,” Dr. Desiree Reedus shared during the annual community outreach woman’s symposium, hosted by the University of California, Riverside (UCR) Doctor’s Corner, a community outreach program after being canceled for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the symposium returned on May 27, 2023.
Dr. Reedus is the co-chair of UCR Doctor’s Corner which partnered with the Riverside Woman’s Club, the oldest continuously running nonprofit organization in Riverside. The program was created in 2013 to mentor UCR medical students and provide several community outreach opportunities. The program also awards scholarships to UCR medical students.
Dr. Reedus explained that UCR’s Doctor’s
Corner decided to center this year’s program on local female medical pioneers because of Riverside’s rich history on which the foundation of UCR’s Medical School was created in 2013.
“So even though [the] school is young, it’s been hundreds of years, basically, of medical providers that were holding the reins until the school was established to continue the legacy of medical excellence in Riverside,” Dr. Reedus said during the program.
This year’s symposium focused on early medical female pioneers in Riverside and beyond. The event also welcomed descendants of female medical pioneers who were awarded certificates by the city and council members.
Members of the Riverside Woman’s Club each presented different female medical pioneers throughout history and shared
the impact of their legacies on the medical field. These women paved the way for new reflections on approaches to health, serviced underrepresented communities and created a path for female physicians today.
In 2021, there were approximately 351,117 female practicing physicians across all specialties in the U.S, roughly 37% of active physicians in the country, according to the 2022 Physician Specialty Data Report by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC).
The symposium recognized and honored the legacy and contributions of several female physicians including Dr. Sarah French Maloy, who was one of Riverside’s first female physicians, a founder of and the first president of the Riverside Woman’s Club; Dr. Anna Snider

Pro-public service legislation introduced by Assemblymember Tina McKinnor’s (D-Inglewood), Assembly Bill (AB) 1, moved closer to becoming law when it was passed by the Assembly with a 66-3 vote late last Month.
It is now under consideration in the Senate.
If passed by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Newsom, the bill will permit California legislative staff to unionize and collectively bargain for wages, benefits and working

conditions, regardless of their political affiliation.
“Legislative staff aren’t looking for special treatment. They are looking for the same dignity and respect afforded to all represented workers,” said McKinnor in a statement after her colleagues voted to advance the legislation.
“To the staff in our district offices and Capitol offices - including our dedicated committee staff - that honorably serve the people of the State of California every day, know this: We see you and we respect you,” McKinnor continued. “With AB 1, we are taking action to make sure that current and future legislative staff, regardless of their member’s political affiliation, are afforded
a safe, equitable and fair opportunity to build a noble career in public service.”
”McKinnor, a former legislative employee herself, said at the Women In California Legislature” speakers series on March 8 that she was an original signer of the “We Said Enough” letter in 2017. The correspondence led to the “Me Too” movement to address workplace sexual harassment, retaliation and intimidation within the California Legislature.
Mary Virginia Watson, chief of staff for Assemblymember Liz Ortega (D-Hayward), supports AB 1. Watson has been a campaign director, campaign, director, and political organizer.
“Congrats to #CALeg staff! I was proud to speak in favor of #AB1 in (the) policy committee, and as a chief of staff, I 100% support Leg staff’s right to unionize. A union would improve recruitment and retention and help the legislature better serve Californians!,” Watson tweeted.
If AB 1 is approved, it will take effect on July 1, 2024.
Another bill, dubbed the “Ebony Alert” bill, would help locate missing Black youth and Black women in California also made it out of the Senate last week with a 39-0 vote.
Senate Bill (SB) 673, authored by Sen. Steven Bradford (D-Inglewood), establishes a notification system to address the issue of missing Black children and young Black women in California who do not receive enough attention.
“The Ebony Alert would ensure that resources and attention are given so we can bring home missing Black women and Black children in the same way we would search for any missing child and missing person,” Bradford, Vice Chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC), stated in March.
The Black and Missing Foundation Inc. (BAMFI), reports that 38% of missing children in
occurring across the country, the letter emphasizes the need for the state's warning to any district considering limitations on educational content. Governor Newsom also criticized Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for signing the "Don't Say Gay" bill into law, which restricts instruction about sexual orientation or gender identity for students until eighth grade.
Schwartz passionately argued, "Talking about families is not a sexual conversation. Talking about two moms or two dads—or a diverse family—none of that is sexual."
The controversy has ignited discussions regarding whether parents should have the sole authority to determine when their children are exposed to potentially sensitive subjects.
Jonathan Keller, president of the California Family Council, weighed in, stating, "Obviously, I think that children need to be taught about the birds and the bees and everything that goes beyond that, especially in the society that we have today. There are a lot of different issues that kids do need to learn, but I think parents should be the primary driving force behind their kids' education when it comes to gender and sexuality."
Governor Newsom's letter also cites legal precedents, asserting that banning books or instruction based on gender and race is unlawful. Inviting school boards to challenge his
stance, Newsom makes it clear that he is ready to engage in this debate head-on. The battle over educational materials and inclusive teachings shows no signs of abating, as communities nationwide grapple with the delicate balance between respecting parental authority and fostering an inclusive and diverse educational environment.
Growing the Game of Tennis in the Inland Region and Beyond
by Prince James StoryThe University of North Carolina Tar Heels took home their first Division 1 victory during the 2023 Women’s Tennis Championship last month — a first in the program’s history.
Looking at the schools that competed in the NCAA tournament and many others around the state of California, one thing that stands out is the need for more African American women in Division 1 Tennis programs.
According to the NCAA demographics database, in 2022, African Americans made up 2% of Division 1 women's tennis players, not including Historical Black Colleges and Universities.
There were ten African American head coaches for Division 1 tennis programs; of that number, seven were
men, and three were women coaches.
Even though tennis is still a White dominant sport, you can still recognize some of the early successes of young Black women playing professional tennis right now, like Naomi Osaka, Coco Gauf, and Sloane Stephens, and you may ask yourself why the numbers are so low at the collegiate level. What barriers may keep African American women from competing in this sport and furthering their education at a high level?
The National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) network was started by Arthur Ashe, Charlie Passerelle, and Sheridan Snyder in 1969. The purpose of the NJTL was to instill not only the benefits of tennis and encourage Brown and Black youth to play tennis,
Growing the Game, continued from page 9 but to encourage them to think about education.
“Not every child that plays tennis is going to be a Venus Williams or an Arthur Ashe,” said Esther Hendershott, Director of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) for Southern California.
“Realizing that education can open many doors, they felt [it was] very important to make sure that our youth, especially in our underserved communities, think about education, along with playing sports, whether it's basketball, baseball or tennis.”
Hendershott praised pioneers in tennis like Katrina Adams and Arthur Ashe, who were victims of verbal abuse and racist attacks.
“You see more faces of color playing tennis, and I attribute that to the pioneers of the past that stuck with the sport, despite all the discrimination and racism that existed at the time,” Hendershott said.
Without the bravery of such tennis trailblazers, the world may not have witnessed the emergence of two sisters from Compton, California who also changed the game of tennis.
Serena Williams is arguably the greatest tennis player of all time. She is a four-time Olympic gold medalist, has won 73 WTA singles titles, and is currently second on the list of Grand Slam singles titles with 23 wins, behind Margaret Court (24).
Venus Williams is also one of the greatest women’s tennis players of all time. She was the first African American woman to be ranked No. 1 in the world. Also, a four-time Olympic gold medalist. She has won 7 Grand Slam singles titles, 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, and 2 Grand Slams mixed titles.
The Williams sisters are undefeated in Grand Slam doubles finals (14-0). The sisters also won three gold medals in the Olympics doubles event.
Hendershott said the emergence of Venus and Serena Williams turned the tide on the sport and helped grow the sport in communities of color.
“They were young, happy girls. They had their beads. They didn't care what anybody thought. They were genuinely authentic in their

“I think Venus and Serena were able to handle that and manage that because of the parents’ support that they had. They were smart girls because they tuned out all the noise around them, and they focused on what they wanted to do, and that was to play tennis.”
The adversity they faced playing tennis as young Black children helped them thrive under pressure and win at the highest levels of competition.
“It didn't matter — all the stares when they were going into these White clubs and tennis tournaments, and people looking at them. They walked tall and proud,” Hendershott said. “That really impacted so many Brown and Black youth.”
Similar to the Williams sisters, Denise Campbell is familiar with how it feels to be Black and judged for her love of tennis. Campbell is 18 years old and a 2023 graduate of J. W. North High School in Riverside, CA.
“I always felt like the other people were expecting me to be a certain way or like they were judging me because a lot of White people do judge [you] before they've ever even talked to you,” Campbell said.
“Especially because it was such a Whitedominant type of sport. I always felt uncomfortable, and I didn't really feel like joining,” Campbell said.
Campbell has been playing tennis since she was five years old despite feeling judged and outcasted by others. Campbell excelled in tennis.
Campbell finished her senior year as the Ivy League singles champion and Ivy League MVP. She also made it to the second round of the CIF regional tournament.
Another barrier that can keep those interested in tennis from competing is the cost of playing the sport. For example, Campbell’s tennis rackets cost around $350 each, not including the costs of paying someone to string the tennis racket. Additionally, quality tennis shoes can cost about $140 a pair.
Tennis is a year-round sport, and to climb the rankings, players need to compete in as many tournaments as possible, stated Campbell’s mother, Synthia Campbell.
Tournament fees, traveling expenses, and personal training sessions are costly. Coaches can charge anywhere from $50 to $200 for a session, and tournament fees may cost $50 or $100, depending on whether she was competing in a singles or doubles tournament.
Hendershott said her goal is to collaborate with more tennis programs in the Inland Empire to address the lack of diversity across the sport and create more opportunities for Black and Brown youth.
In the past, USTA has provided tennis equipment to schools, parks, and recreational centers and helped them train PE teachers, coaches, and parks and recreational staff to become tennis coaches or learn tennis to better enable them to work with kids.
They also provide support to families or participants who can't afford the cost of playing

Brown Corr, an early physician whose family continues to carry her legacy. The Corr family of Riverside is recognized for establishing the Riverside Medical Clinic founded by her son, Dr. William Corr; and Dr. June McCarroll, who was a physician in the Coachella Valley, known for serving five American Indian reservations in the region and a member of the Woman’s Club of Indio.
Descendants of the Corr and McCarroll families were invited to the symposium where members of the Corr family spoke about their family history. The great grandson of Dr. McCarroll attended the symposium and was awarded a certificate of recognition by the city in his great grandmother’s honor.
Each year, the Riverside Woman’s Club awards several scholarships to students, including two UCR medical students who are in their first or second year of medical school. Students can learn more about the scholarships by visiting the Riverside Woman’s Club website.

Black news publishers in California are watching lawmakers closely, anticipating that they will include provisions in a projournalism bill that would benefit their businesses.
On June 2, the California Assembly passed Assembly Bill (AB) 886 with a vote of 46-6.
The bill would mandate that social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Google to pay a “journalism usage fee” to news organizations for sharing their content.
Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland) said she authored the bill with the goal of supporting California’s local news media outlets including ethnic media and small news publishers throughout the state.
“Free press is in our constitution, and it is at risk right now. That is what this bill is about,” Wicks told the Assembly. “Publishers deserve to be paid a journalism usage fee relative to how much their content is used on these platforms.”
According to the text of the bill, newspaper advertising has decreased by 66% over the past 10 years, and newsroom staff have declined 44%.
“Given the important role of ethnic media, it is critical to advance state policy that ensures their publishers are justly compensated for the content they create and distribute,” the bill’s language asserts.
AB 886, also known as the California Journalism Preservation Act, would require outlets receiving funds to use 70% of it on journalists and support staff. The bill was cosponsored by the California News Publishers Association (CNPA), and the California Labor Federation (CLF).
“When local newspapers shutter, civic engagement goes down, corruption goes up, and the ability to combat disinformation erodes further,” CNPA wrote in a statement of support for the bill.
“Like all workers, journalists’ labor produces value. News workers win their fair share of it through collective bargaining with employers, as protected by the National Labor Relations

Act. But, if that value is unfairly captured by third-party tech websites instead of the news publishers that employ journalists, these workers cannot bargain for pay that reflects their actual economic productivity. Meanwhile, newsroom jobs keep disappearing,” wrote CFL’s Mitch Steiger in a press release.
AB 886 also references a document written by the African American journalist and abolitionist Samuel Cornish in 1827. It highlighted the need for African Americans to have their own platform to express their grievances, advocate for their rights, and challenge racial inequality.
“We Wish to Plead Our Own Cause,” Cornish wrote and Wicks references in the bill language. The bill language goes on to state, “This call to action spurred the establishment of numerous

Black-owned newspapers and publications, solidifying the role of the Black press as a powerful tool for empowerment and social change, and laid the groundwork in our country for other ethnic media to plead their own cause.”
The Bill has faced opposition from multiple organizations such as the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), the California Chamber of Commerce, CalMatters and Facebook’s parent company Meta.
According to Meta, news accounts for less than 3% of the content appearing on most Facebook users’ feeds. They also state that the media’s struggles were not in direct correlation with the growth of social media platforms.

People like Komrosky, and others like him, help fuel the hate that results in the terrorizing of members of the LGBTQ+ community across this country. As a result, since 2015, gender orientation related crimes have continued rising across the country.
Fortunately, despite such hateful bias, attitudes towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals continue evolving to be more open and affirming.
In addition to these changing attitudes it is also important that we continue speaking out against bigots like Komrosky, letting them know their bias may sometimes win at the margins but in the long run, their hatred and bigotry is destined to fail.
There will be no more pink triangles.

Black News Publishers, continued from page 13
“If the Journalism Preservation Act passes, we will be forced to remove news from Facebook and Instagram rather than pay into a slush fund that primarily benefits big, out-of-state media companies under the guise of aiding California publishers,” Meta said in a statement.
An analysis conducted by the tech industryfunded group Chamber of Progress shows that the biggest beneficiaries of the proposed law would be news outlets such as Fox News, the New York Post and Newsmax, all of which have faced accusations of spreading misinformation in the past.
According to the study, these outlets would receive four times more in revenue than major California news organizations, 151 times more than Latino news outlets in the state, 643 times more than newspapers located in the state’s worst news deserts and 844 times as much as California Black news outlets. The bill will now be considered by the state Senate.
“
Free press is in our constitution, and it is at risk right now. That is what this bill is about.

tennis.
“We’re looking for more representation out there, as far as tennis directors, tennis coaches, tennis teachers and volunteers go. We need that representation from our Brown and Black communities,” Hendershott said.
“Imagine going into a tournament, you’re a kid, and everyone around you is White, and you’re the only Brown or Black child. You sense it, and you see the stares. You hear the people. It can affect a child and so, it’s important for kids to see someone that reflects and represents them.”
the U.S. are Black, despite Black people making up 14% of the population. Black children are disproportionately classified as “runaways” in comparison to their white counterparts who are classified as “missing.” Therefore, when Black children are reported missing, law enforcement does not always treat those cases with urgency or issue Amber Alerts.
The AMBER moniker – which stands for America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response – was created as a legacy to nine-yearold Amber Hagerman, who was kidnapped and murdered while riding her bicycle in Arlington, Texas.
“When someone who is missing is incorrectly listed as a runaway, they basically vanish a second time. They vanish from the police detectives’ workload. They vanish from the headlines. In many ways, no one even knows they are missing.
How can we find someone and bring them home safely when no one is really looking for them,” Bradford said.
Bradford’s Ebony Alert bill is inspired by a similar bill, the Feather Alert, introduced by Assemblymember James Ramos (D-San Bernardino), the only Native American serving in the California Assembly. The Feather Alert law, which took effect in January, assists law enforcement to quickly notify the public when Native American Californians are reported missing.
Black women and girls face a higher risk of being harmed and trafficked. According to a report by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation on human trafficking incidents in the U.S., 40% of sex trafficking victims were identified as Black women.
