Climate Brownsville has a subtropical climate just outside of a humid semiarid climate. The nearby waters of the Gulf of Mexico help keep Brownsville cooler during the summer relative to cities further inland such as Laredo and McAllen. Thus temperatures above 100 °F (37.8 °C) are uncommon, with an average of only 1.1 days reaching that level of heat.

History & Culture

Brownsville Heritage Trail The Brownsville Heritage Trail is a series of trails organized to take you past Brownsville’s most important historic homes and buildings. Each walking tour takes about ten to twenty minutes to complete. Many locations will have official markers with text descriptions to interpret the significance of these historic sites and events. A good place to begin is the Stillman House Museum or the Historic Brownsville Museum. A second part of the Heritage Trail is a self-guided tour provided by the Brownsville Historical Association. This guide also provides reference points and directions to other historical sites and battlefields such as the Palo Alto National Historical Park and the Battle of Palmito Ranch. In addition, other attractions such as the Commemorative Air Force Museum and Costumes of the Americas can be found in the city.

Palo Alto National Historical Battlefield Park The course of Mexico and the United States was forever changed by the opening battles of the U.S.-Mexican War at Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma in 1846. At the end of the U.S.-Mexican War, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed and the area where Brownsville is now located was confirmed as being American territory.

Page • 6

Battle of Palmito Ranch With the onset of the Civil War, Confederate cotton exports left via neutral Mexico (from the Port of Bagdad, at the Mouth of the Rio Grande,) to evade the Union blockade. Brownsville traders and intriguers prospered as part of the lifeline of survival for the Confederacy. The last battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Palmito Ranch was fought May 13, 1865, five weeks after the Confederate Army surrendered at Appomattox.

Historic Brownsville Museum Brownsville has attained a notable record for its adaptive use of old structures that resemble nineteenth century Mexican- Spanish Colonial architecture. Traditions with formal and folk building practices from Texas forge a unique, Rio Grande Valley architecture style as seen in the reuse of the Southern Pacific Depot, which now serves as the Historic Brownsville Museum.

History & Culture

Stillman House Museum / Heritage Complex Built in 1850 for Henry Miller, the Stillman House Museum is a brick Greek Revival structure reputedly occupied by Brownsville’s founder Charles Stillman. Additionally, the Heritage Complex next to the Stillman House Museum provides a broad perspective of the history of the area.

Historic Rabb Plantation House The Rabb Plantation is a 19th-century sugarcane plantation on the bank of the Rio Grande - at that time, a river deep enough to float light steamboats. The plantation’s produce was shipped directly from the riverbank; the successful plantation’s Queen Anne mansion, built by Frank and Lillian Rabb in 1891-1892, was adaptively remodeled in 2013 to serve as the Sanctuary’s visitor center. Visit the historic Rabb Plantation House to get a sense life during this time.

Exactly the port T

he Port of Brownsville moves more steel into Mexico than any other U.S. port. It’s the largest land-owning port in the nation with 40,000 acres. And it has full congressional authorization to deepen its channel to 52 feet. Its FTZ ranks second nationally in value of exported goods, and its railroad continues impressive growth trends. Because of the steady South Texas breeze, the wind energy sector selected the port for its base of operations. And with Mexican petroleum reforms a reality, more of our shippers are experiencing measurable success. The port is in easy reach of a growing consumption zone of more than 10 million on both sides of the border, benefiting our customers with unparalleled rail and heavy haul logistics solutions. It’s the most important cargo transfer point on the Gulf of Mexico. The port that works – the Port of Brownsville.

We are all on this journey together - to make the world a better place, to see issues in a new light, to solve problems and to be of service to our community. We have awarded more than 10,000 degrees since our inception two years ago, and our graduates already are making a difference in healthcare, engineering, teaching, marine and coastal studies and so much more. Take notice, because we are out to inspire the world.
