Star Wars - The Old Republic Test: We Discover Our Destiny in this MMORPG By Kyle Hayth It has always been the dream of young and old alike since the first Star Wars hit the theatres in 1977 – to become one of the legendary characters seen in the film and experience the Star Wars universe firsthand. Now, with Star Wars: The Old Republic, it is possible to do just that in an MMORPG setting. Sure, there have been other titles that have come and gone, but ones that allow you to write your own story and become a part of the universe itself? We decided to fulfill our own childhood (and adult) dreams by putting this AAA title to the test since it will be going free-to-play in the fall of this year.
Creating Our Own Legend in the Star Wars Universe The time has come to create our own character in Star Wars: The Old Republic. As we take a look at the options, we have one very important decision to make right at the beginning – will we fight for The Republic or The Sith Empire? We here at browsergamez.com tend to have a darker side, so we decided to fight for the glory of the Sith Empire and take back the galaxy that is rightfully ours!
Who will you fight for?

After we chose our side, we had a number of race and class choices to select from. Each race has a passive racial trait, which can be a bonus or special skill. We chose the red-skinned and ancient Sith race to begin our story and as for our class, well, we can only say that we found the Sith Inquisitor to be the most appealing. Who doesn’t want to shoot lightning out of their hands?
The Sith Inquisitor and the class options.
Dark or Light Side? The Choice Is Yours One of the most interesting aspects of Star Wars: The Old Republic is that there are consequences to your actions. During the in-depth conversations we were a part of, we had the opportunity to either choose “light side”, neutral or “dark side” answers, regardless of what faction we are. By choosing light or dark, we were able to increase our overall “dark side” alignment. This is important because as we progressed further into the game, there were certain gear items that required a certain level of light or dark side points to use. That meant we had to live with the consequences of our choices as well.
Our First Real Adventure Awaits – Black Talon Flashpoint
As the story goes, we are travelling to Dromund Kaas on the Black Talon. However, we encounter a Republic ship along our way and find out that a high-priority target is on board – a defector. After taking down a number of bosses and battling our way through the cargohold and various hallways, we finally made it to our goal, the traitor. Now, this is where the light side and dark side decisions play a big role… were we willing to kill him or do we let him live to fight another day? Being Sith and evil, our group decided that the general was too much of a threat to let him escape and there is only one punishment suited for traitors. Death!

Entering the Black Talon...
Flashpoints are the Star Wars: The Old Republic version of dungeons. These special areas can only be entered by groups and will challenge the group to make it from the start to finish, while completing special objectives. Although the Black Talon flashpoint was action-packed, we found it to be a little too easy but that was to be expected for the first flashpoint. The make-up of the group was not so important as was just destroying anything and everything around us. On the other hand, because it was easy, it was fun and allowed us to get a feel for how the game mechanics function and what we can expect later on.
Our Trusty Companions Were Always at Our Side In Star Wars: The Old Republic, there is more depth to the story than your average fantasy or sci-fi MMORPG. One of the finer examples of story depth is the companions we encountered during our adventures. These companions will always be at our side at we could have one of them by our side at any given time. Some of your companions may be droids, which are better suited for crafting and technology, while the others, like our incredibly powerful Khem Val, are meant to simply be our muscle. Each class will have the opportunity to meet and recruit different companions.
These side stories are a way to build your own story in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Khem Val was not so easy to get at our side and there was quite the adventure. Before we boarded the Black Talon and before we got our first real intergalactic experience, we had to delve deep into the tombs of Korriban to unlock this powerful assassin. The fight was long and hard, but as we later figured out in some pretty hairy situations, it was well worth it.

Work, Work, Work... Like most other MMORPGs out there, Star Wars: The Old Republic has quite an extensive crafting system. Depending on what craft we chose, we were able to create a wide variety of items ranging from new lightsabers, rock-hard armor and valuable minerals. We were allowed to choose three different professions. When choosing professions, it is wise to make sure that all of your professions work together one way or another. It wouldn’t be very helpful to collect powerful crystals for lightsabers but be an armorsmith. Just like leveling, you can improve your skills in your various professions, letting you create new and powerful items. Your companions are also very helpful in the professions of Star Wars: The Old Republic. You see, as a struggling Sith rising through the ranks and going on long adventures, we did not always have time to go collect rare items or make a stop at a crafting station. Therefore, we can send our companions (up to two at a time) to do those jobs for us. That way, we can level our crafting while leveling ourselves.
Crew skills pane. We decided to level our Synthweaving and create armor.
Lush Worlds, Expansive Galaxy As we continued to become an ever more powerful Sith, we discovered that we would have to journey around the galaxy a bit to find new challenges. One of the coolest things we found out is that every player receives their own starship in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Depending on your class, the ship will be different. Since we decided to fulfill our destiny as a Sith Inquistor, we had the chance to command a swift fighter: Fury.

Our beloved starship.
Our starship functions as our base of operations. Here, we can talk to our companions, give our superiors (mighty Sith Lords… we didn’t want to disappoint them) updates on our progress and even partake in epic space battles. These battles function much like “missions” – you must complete the objective given, while having the chance at a bonus. Some may even compare the style of space combat to that of the famed Star Fox series. After we successfully escorted a convoy and took out an enemy space station, it was time to check out some other worlds. Each star system has a different range of levels that can go there. The starting zone in the Korriban system is designed for players up to level 15, while other worlds range from 15-20, 20-25 and higher. Each world that we visited featured lush, detailed environments with plenty of challenges to face.
Balmorra - the third world we visited.

Conclusion Star Wars: The Old Republic gives players the chance to live out their Star Wars fantasies like never before. We found the soon-to-be, free-to-play title very appealing to many types of players. On one hand, the stylized graphics give it a somewhat light-hearted feeling while the incredible voice acting brings the story to life as we went on our adventures. Giving players the chance to not only travel, but to fight with their very own starship was a major plus. Sometimes, it was difficult to find a group and we felt like we were playing a massive single player game, but all-in-all, we would definitely recommend this title to players who are on the lookout for a new free-to-play title in the near future.
