World of Tanks Test: Tactics Are the Key – Not Money By Kyle Hayth Tanks are one of those things that all boys and men somehow have an affinity for. The calls to command our own tank lead us to put the free-to-play title, World of Tanks, to the test. With this title, publishers Wargaming.net have challenged players to use tactics on the battlefield and the players seem to like it. From being the first of its kind on the market to a title with over 25 million registered players, it seems fighting in your tank is something everyone can enjoy.
Driving a Tank – A Dream of Boys and Men Alike In World of Tanks, we slide into the role of a tank commander. We find ourselves fighting on the battlefields of the Second World War and we already feel at home. At first glance, it doesn’t seem that we have the option to choose a side to fight for or, for that matter, a solution to the most terrible conflict of the 20th century. To us, it felt more like we were going to be playing the role of mercenaries with a choice of American, Soviet, French or German tanks. A model of each nations tanks already stands in our garage, which is the starting point for all things in World of Tanks, and is ready to be driven out onto the battlefield. The choice of tanks, at least in the beginning, doesn’t play a big role, as they are more or less similar in nearly every way. That means it is up to us and what tank we think looks the best will be our choice.
On the open field without cover... never a good idea.

We Are Fighting… On Which Side? The base of all military operations in World of Tanks is our garage. From there, we can purchase new tanks, load up on ammunition, research new tech, add new crew members, join up with a clan or add friends. At the same time, we can join up in the chat and prepare to head into battle once again. After a hard-fought battle, we can also repair our tank in the garage, which happens to be a lot in our case. The garage is also our area for keeping track of how much experience and money we have. However, before we really get to jump into battle for the first time, there is not a whole lot to do. We have the choice of either heading into a training battle or get right into it. During the training battles, it is important to remember that you don’t earn any experience, but you also do not have to pay for ammunition or repairs. After playing for a while, it became quite clear that the training mode is more groups of players who are looking to improve on their group tactics. That is why we decided to just head right into the battle!
Tanks Are Hard to Turn, Hard to Defeat The game mechanics of World of Tanks are somewhat reminiscent of a first-person shooter. A tank is inherently slow, at least with our starting-out equipment which we had to use in our first battles. Regardless, we took our tank and headed towards the enemy base.
In a straight-forward, simple battles there are two primary goals. Either we take over the enemy’s base or we eliminate all opposing players. Additionally, we are able to prove ourselves in the Assault and Encounter battle modes. In Encounter, two teams fight for one control point on the map, while in Assualt, players of one team will have to attack the other. Sounds pretty simple if you ask us. However, it can be more challenging when trying to maneuver a giant tank around on the battlefield. Wargaming.net made sure to keep the gameplay life-like and set the bar for the reality of the title above that of many other games. What that means for us is that we cannot simply charge into battle and drive around like madmen. We have to approach battles with tactics and strategy – using cover and camouflage in bushes, using the terrain to our advantage.
Rommel Rather Than Rambo Because of the necessity of cover and tactics, the battles tend to work like the handling of your tank – sometimes slow. However, there are times when the safety you feel by the pace of the game gets rudely taken away as the shells start flying. This is where your tactics as a team come into play. Some types of tanks are used to provide support for the group, while others are used for all-out assault and the success of the team lies on the ability of us, the players, to work together and know our vehicles. In order to get our hands on some of these other kinds of tanks, such as light tanks for quick attacks or medium tanks for firepower, we first needed to have some purchasing power. For every battle fought, we received experience points and money, both of which are necessary for new tanks and new tech.

Using terrain to our advantage.
To Your Battle Stations – There Is Chocolate for Everyone Researching new technologies offer us new modules, which mean better equipment for our tank. Right from the beginning we noticed, as new players, that we were essentially cannon fodder for the more experienced and better equipped tanks. There is no such thing as beginner’s protection. In World of Tanks, the motto is kill or be killed. That meant that our most important goal was to improve our tank enough so that we could put up a good fight against our opponents. Although, upgrading our tank is a lot easier said than done. A large portion of the little money we are earning after each battle goes to purchasing more ammunition and repairing our tank so that it can head out on the battlefield again. We are stuck in a repeating cycle which can only be broken by having patience, if we do not want to purchase in-game currency with real cash. It does help that there are regular tournaments and clan wars which offer up other ways to earn the in-game currency. We can also improve the crew of our tank when the need arises with special items like the morale-boosting chocolate. There are 22 abilities that you can improve or better for your crew.

We Are Coming Europe and We Are Not Alone! It is hard to stay motivated when fighting alone the entire time, even if the battles are rather short sometimes. That is why we searched out a few players as friends who we could go into battle with. In this case, it was also finally possible to work out some tactics as a team. The light, quick tanks move across the battlefield acting as scouts while the medium tanks prepare to unleash their firepower on the identified enemy tanks. That is when the heavy tanks come into play as well, launching powerful artillery attacks from the back. Finally, we got to see what World of Tanks really offered. However, the battles are even more intense in the clan battle mode. On a European map, the battle movements are laid out on which players plan their strategies in order to secure the valuable points and resources. Even diplomacy is needed in this game mode, challenging players on and off the battlefield.
Money Isn’t Everything, Strategy Is the Deciding Factor During our test phase we naturally didn’t shy away from spending a little money to get our hands on the good stuff. With a completely outfitted tank from one of the higher-level classes, we dove right into battle. The question was… how would it look if we really went all-out on the upgrades? We, of course, did just that and decided to try our luck with our new, fancy tank. We realized one thing fairly quick: with a better tank, the difficulty level rises as well. This meant that there was really no difference if we took to the field in a higher or lower level tank. To understand World of Tanks, players have to understand the principle of gameplay – even with a fully upgraded tank, you cannot simply charge into battle. Tactics are the deciding factor, no matter what sort of super-mega tank you are driving.

Conclusion It takes a while for World of Tanks to really be a fun game but once the tanks started rolling onto the battlefield, the action-packed title delievered what it promises. Until that point however, beginners should bring a lot of money with them into the game and be very patient. Rather than charging head-long into the battle, the necessity of tactics and strategy are really what had us getting into the gameplay. This, of course, was helped by the realistic quality of the game mechanics and the textures of World of Tanks. The environment and battlefields are life-like and let you feel like you are actually controlling a powerful machine of war against your opponents.
