Bruce Darling is a pivotal figure in disability rights, having established himself as a co-founder, President, and CEO of the Center for Disability Rights (CDR) in Rochester, New York. Over nearly four decades, he has dedicated his career to championing the cause of independent living and ensuring that individuals with disabilities receive essential support and resources, solidifying his role as a crucial advocate for disability justice. His educational experiences influenced Bruce's entry into disability rights advocacy as a neurodivergent individual at a time when educational systems lacked broad testing and accommodations for disabled students. His mother, Norita, played an instrumental role in supporting him through these challenges, helping him to harness his potential and thrive academically. His educational journey led him from McQuaid Jesuit High School, where he graduated in 1983, to the University of Rochester, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1986. Bruce's university education was expansive, covering literature, psychology, sociology, photography, filmmaking, history, and business courses at the Simon School. His academic path continued at Syracuse University, where he achieved a Master of Science in Public Relations Management in 1989, equipping him with robust public relations, communications, and management skills that would later enhance his advocacy work. 1990, Bruce E. Darling brought his vision to life by co-founding the Center for Disability Rights (CDR). Under his leadership, CDR has evolved into a significant advocate in the disability rights movement, addressing critical issues such as accessible housing, public transportation, and alternatives to institutionalized care.
