WELCOME TO EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to our visitors from Kent.
Hopefully we will manage to go into October with a point or three on the board but even if we don't it's not time to press the panic button yet. Looking at the league table, some clubs have played as few as three of their 38 games - it will take a long time before it starts to take shape.
Having said that, after another good (but ultimately) unrewarded performance against Bridges it would be nice to see our efforts rewarded this afternoon. Finally, please read the club notice elsewhere and our zero tolerance approach to the bad behaviour experienced at recent games.
East Grinstead Town FC is an unincorporated association / members club and a Community Amateur Sports Club (reg no CASC 02270).

MANAGER’S NOTES
We welcome everyone back for the last game of this month against what will no doubt be a very strong Ashford United side who will be in the hunt for automatic promotion.
We managed to play an in-house game last week which allowed us to try a couple of different options with players and also team shape. It is always very difficult when you find yourself on the wrong end of results. You sometimes start to overthink and question what you have worked hard on as a management team and as a squad. Losing to Three Bridges didn’t help and it was the first time in management I’ve actually lost that fixture so it was hard for me personally.
But full credit to Jamie Crellin, the Bridges manager, and his lads, they were no doubt the best team on the day. They are top of the league for a reason, but we will hopefully avenge that defeat later in the season.
We have worked the lads hard this week, but we are still struggling with a few absences. Tom Summerfield is off travelling to New Zealand so we wish him all the best and we will do well to replace him as players like him just don’t come along often.
Ben Aubery is absent this week and both Kiye and Connor have struggled with slight strains. But we welcome back Dean Perana who will add size and power to the squad. We have also brought in young full back Dom Kaja who was at Hastings United.
Obivously we need to start picking points up, but we are only four league games into a long season although having no points to date for me is not acceptable. As ever we ask the fans to stick with the squad and back the boys in both good times and hard times, they thrive off the positive support.
Lastly, I just wanted to mention Darren Hadlum is leaving his role as goalkeeing coach. Darren has been a loyal servant to the club both under my tenor and previous managers. He is massively respected by all the goalkeepers in all the squads and he will be hugely missed but least I'll now be able to finish a bag of sweets to myself in the dugout! We wish you all the best Darren and look forward to seeing you at some of the games.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to East Court for this afternoon’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Ashford United. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all Wasps supporters, the Ashford players, management, officials and supporters as well as today’s referee Elliot Spencer and his assistants Joshua Plumb and Piotr Zachwieja. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality.
Unlike Wasps, Kevin Watson’s Nuts and Bolts were in action last Saturday in the FA Trophy away to Met Police. The match finished all square at 1-1 after 90 minutes, but Ashford progressed through to the next round away to Beaconsfield Town after winning the penalty shoot-out 5-4. Ashford have played three league matches winning the first two against Erith & Belvedere and Sevenoaks Town and losing to Phoenix Sports 5-3 a fortnight ago and are in ninth spot. Drew Cooney’s Wasps are yet to record a point in the league after four matches. Today will be another tough fixture but Drew and his lads will be looking to put an end to that run and kick-start Wasps’ season. Although we can say that performances have been good and chances created in every match to deserve more, we need to find the back of the net, even scruffy deflections that go our way for a change, to get a win under our belts and to boost confidence.
endorsed by the NSPCC and will be supported this weekend across every level of English football, including the Premier League, EFL, Barclays Women’s Super League, Barclays Women’s Championship, National League and across the grassroots game.
This year’s Play Safe campaign focuses on the safeguarding role that everyone can play –coaches, players, parents/carers, spectators or volunteers – to keep children and young people safe, no matter what the football setting.
This weekend, all our teams’ captains will be wearing Play Safe armbands and coaches will wear Play Safe pin badges.
I’d like to make another appeal for more volunteers on match days. Areas where we could really do with more support include bar, stewarding, turnstiles, media etc so if anyone wants to get involved, please speak to me or one of my colleagues.
Thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home.
Enjoythematch

Our next match is next Saturday when we make the long trip to Horndean, who we will meet for the first time. The following Tuesday (10th October) we visit another newcomer to the Isthmian League, Broadbridge Heath (ko 7.45pm) who we last played in the then Sussex County League.
This weekend, we unite with all in English football to promote Play Safe, the FA’s countrywide nationwide campaign to focus attention of the vital importance of safeguarding across our national game. The Play Safe campaign is

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST
As we reach the end of the month I’m going to have a look at programmes produced in the past for games played in late September.
First up is a Sussex County FA RUR Charity Cup match down on the Sussex seaside –Southwick v East Grinstead on Saturday 30 September 2006 - with both teams in Division Two of the County League.
The programme is a decent one with lots of different statistics and, not surprisingly, one of the first items to look at is the league table. We were doing okay in seventh place (out of 18 in the league) with three wins, two draws and two defeats. Southwick on the other hand played two more matches than us but were fourth from the bottom with just one win, three draws and five defeats already. We hadn’t yet played each other in the league. We had brief comments on both teams’ matches on the previous Saturday. Southwick had gone 2-0 up in the first 10 minutes against Seaford Town only for the opposition to be given a “dubious penalty” to get back in the game from which they went on to win 3-2. Our match on the same day had seen a few more goals – at home to Midhurst and Easebourne we had won 5-4 with our current manager Drew Cooney scoring one of his rare goals. The programme looks back at Southwick’s first RUR Cup match in 2005 where they had won 4-0 and they were to repeat the win against us, though by the only goal. We didn’t play at all well in the game and some of our team were to apologise for their poor performance.
Next up it’s East Grinstead v East Preston on Saturday 29 September 2012 in the County League’s top division.
A look at the programme’s league table shows that we were likely to be having a difficult afternoon. East Preston were top of the league with eight wins and one draw (and the only team with no defeats as yet) while we are in the bottom six with two wins, two draws but five defeats.
However the programme was able to offer some hope with match reports “on two great
away wins in the last seven days.” One of these two wins came in the RUR Cup when the only goal was an extra-time header from Michael Belli while the second win came in the league down at Pagham with goals from George Hillier and Sam Cane. Manager Simon Funnell was of course very pleased with these wins, especially as we were suffering from lots of injuries as well as players coming and going for various reasons. For example we had already used four different goalkeepers. So did we make it 3 consecutive wins and give East Preston their first defeat of the season? Well no we didn’t. East Preston were a good team and dominated things and after an hour they scored what turned out to be the only goal.

CLUB NOTICE
Supporter Behaviour
In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match.
Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the recent fixture against Three Bridges foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.
Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.
Verbal warnings by committee
members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA.
We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead.
From today's fixture against Ashford United, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour.
Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.
