Good afternoon one and all. No one needs reminding what an important game this is for both teams. The equation for us is simple enough: three points and we will definitely be a Step 4 club next season. Even a point would not be a bad result. Defeat to a Beckenham team with wins in their last two and the gap is down to a point - allbeit we'd still have a game in hand. That last scenario is one we need to try and avoid! Drew, rightly in my opinion, prioritised today with his team selection on Tuesday but in the event as young side did themselves proud. It certainly didn't feel like a 6-2 defeat with two late goals flattering the visitors. We certainly frightened them in the first half, not only by going in front but then equalising to make it 2-2. We conceded some soft goals though, and that is something we need to stop doing in these final four games. Nonetheless, the spirit and energy we showed could not be faulted. When we've needed a result this seasonAshford and Littlehampton spring to mind - we've dug one out.

MANAGER’S NOTES

A warm welcome to East Court. Today is without doubt our biggest game of the season.

The lads and the backroom staff know how important a win is against Beckenham who remain four points behind us although we have a game in hand.

Everything is very much still in our hands and victory today would make sure we stay in this league next season, but we have been saying this for several weeks now and with Beckenham's fine run of recent results this really is a huge game and a difficult one as well. Everyone will need to be at the top of their game and stand up and be counted.

We hope to have Glenn Wilson and Henry Sinai back fit to start and if we can take the positives out of the first hour at home to league leaders Ramsgate on Tuesday and reproduce that level of performance we should be able to get what we need from the game. We can then look forward to the final three games and to finishing the season strongly.

As I have mentioned before, now more than ever we need as many people supporting the lads in this game and the remaining three matches. You really got behind the lads on Tuesday and helped us create a tough atmosphere for Ramsgate so let's have more of the same today, but with a different result.

Good luck to us! Drew

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to East Court for today’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Beckenham Town.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to Darren Anslow, the Beckenham players, management, officials and supporters as well as this afternoon’s referee Red Egan and his assistants Pete Andrews and Gareth Walker. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality.

We were all deeply saddened to hear of the passing of League President Lord Richard Rosser on Wednesday. On behalf of the club, I would like to offer our condolences to his wife, family and friends. We will ask that everyone observes a minute’s silence before the match and players will be wearing black armbands as a mark of respect.

Since ex-Wasp Louie Theophanous returned to Beckenham, today’s visitors lost the first three matches but have won the last two with Louie scoring a hat-trick in their 5-2 win over Hythe Town last Saturday and another two in the 4-2 win over Sheppey United on Tuesday. Those two wins have put them three points clear of bottom club Erith & Belvedere who have a game in hand. Erith play Three Bridges tomorrow.

With three matches to play including today, Beckenham are currently four points and one place behind us but we have a game in hand. Both teams have the same goal difference, and it doesn’t need me to say how important this afternoon’s match is for both teams.

If we win we cannot be caught by Beckenham who would then have to rely on Littlehampton losing their final four matches and they in turn would need to win their remaining two against Horndean and Burgess Hill Town to avoid relegation.

Should Beckenham win today, then to be guaranteed safety we would need to win two of our remaining three matches if Beckenham and Erith win all their remaining fixtures.

Next Saturday, we travel to Merstham, who are now safe and then we host Horndean the following Tuesday with Sheppey United our visitors on the final day of the season.

Although Tuesday night’s 6-2 defeat against leaders Ramsgate appears a walkover, it wasn’t. Even with key players missing, we took the lead through a great goal by Matt Daniel after 11 minutes and a cool finish from Ollie Spinks levelled the scores before half-time following two goals from the Rams. We then shot ourselves in the foot 12 minutes after the break from our own goal kick which went straight to Joe Taylor who put the ball away and he then scored three minutes later from the spot after a needless foul. The Rams then went on to score another two, one deep into added time, which put them top on goal difference.

Everyone appreciates your enthusiastic support both home and away through thick and thin, none more so than the players. We we look forward to you getting behind Drew and the lads this afternoon.

Thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home.

Enjoy the match

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST

We've got a couple of programmes to talk about for games played in the past on today's date. I'm going to start by going back 22 years for East Grinstead v Shinewater on Saturday 13 April 2002. This was a Sussex County League division two match.

On opening up the programme the first item to read was the two teams – and I had a bit of a surprise. Listed in the substitutes for East Grinstead were Alan Woolley's son Scott and my own son Daniel. However, whether either of them actually took any part in the game I don’t know.

Bruce Talbot's club notes “Talk of the Town” welcomes our visitors (who were an Eastbourne team). They weren't having much of a season, but a recent change of manager had brought them wins over two teams in the top three. We were in fact in fourth place and so we hoped Shinewater wouldn't extend that recent run to make it three wins over the top four clubs.

Our own most recent game had been a bit of a disappointment in our bid to get into the top two places in the league. At home to middle of the table Oakwood we found ourselves 1-0 down with the last kick of the first half and for almost all the second half that looked as it would be the only goal – until our centre-half Andy Rabbetts popped up to equalise just as the referee got ready to blow his final whistle. However, dropping two points now meant that to stand any chance of getting into the top two we must win all four of our remaining games. I've told you that we were fourth in the league –Shinewater were third from bottom. We had visited them at the beginning of November, and we came home with a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Matt Thorpe and Steve Greig. But I'm sorry I can't tell you how we did in April 2002 as I don't have any programmes for our last four games.

Moving on we have Sidley United v East Grinstead on Saturday 13 April 2013 in division one of the Sussex County League. The programme used very shiny paper and started by welcoming us to Gullivers Sports Ground.

The club notes soon get on to talking about Sidley's most recent two wins which means that Sidley had now won five of their last six games with the hope that “relegation fears have eased somewhat”. All six of those games had been home games – and indeed they were part of a run of just one away match in 16 Sidley games. I believe that cricket took priority at the ground and meant that Sidley couldn't play home games in August, September and most of April.

The programme's league table shows Sidley now in 14th place (out of 22 in the league) while we were five places above them. The programme doesn't talk about our home game played at the beginning of December. It finished at 1-1 with Ben Chick scoring our goal

– the Sidley programme results list tells me that their scorer was Jack Cooper. So how did our visit to Sidley go? Well, we didn't make the journey. Sidley's pitch was flooded and so they came up to East Court instead and with some ten minutes to go we took the lead through George Hiller-Jones. Dave Gellatly then added a second in the last couple of minutes. LESTERMEDCALF.

On this day in 2013 we beat Sidley 2-0 at home.

CLUB NOTICE

Supporter Behaviour

In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match.

Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the fixture against Three Bridges earlier this season foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.

Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.

Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA.

We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead.

As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour.

Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.

BECKENHAM TOWN

A POTTED HISTORY OF BECKENHAM TOWN Origin

Beckenham Town Football Club is one of the older non-league clubs still in existence, being first affiliated to The Kent Football Association in 1887.

Records show the club played in the London League from 1923 to 1933 and 1951 to 1961 and the Aetolian League from 1961 to 1964 before moving to the Greater London League from 1964 to 1969. In addition to its presentday participation in the FA Cup and FA Vase, it also competed in the FA Amateur Cup from 1926 to 1967.

Amongst the club’s past Presidents is exPrime Minister the Rt. Hon Harold Macmillan MP and amongst the club’s Vice Presidents is Sydney Wooderson, one of Britain’s greatest middle-distance runners.

Famous players

Amongst Becks’ ex-players are goalkeeper Ray Potter, who played over 220 games for West Bromwich Albion, Frank “Dot” Morris, who played over 70 games for Crystal Palace, and Pat Saward, who played for Aston Villa in the 1950s, managed Brighton & Hove Albion and captained The Republic of Ireland. More recently, ex-Charlton Athletic star Jason Euell wore Beckenham’s colours.

Achievements

Honours include the London League Championship in 1927-28 and runners-up in 1930- 31. Unfortunately, the club folded in 1969 merging with Bromley FC. The club was subsequently re-formed and joined London Spartan League in 1975 and enjoyed some early success being runners-up to Fisher Athletic in the Spartan League Senior Division in 1977-78.

Town also reached two Spartan League Cup Finals, losing to Welling United and Farnham Town. More recent successes have been two previous appearances in the Kent League Cup Final in 1984-85 and 1992-93 and runners-Up to Maidstone United in the Kent League Premier Division in 2005-06.

After three previously unsuccessful attempts in 1981/82, 2004/05 and 2007/08, Beckenham finally secured a victory in the Kent Senior Trophy after a 4-0 win over Ashford United.
