Good afternoon and welcome to everyone who has made the journey along the A264 from Broadbridge Heath, regular opponents of ours in our County League days of course. While we were left frustrated by another postponement on Tuesday when the Lancing game was called off, Heath and Merstham were sharing no fewer than 12 goals! Not sure we'll see such riches today but you never know. Drew was keen to take the momentum from last Saturday's win over Ashford into Tuesday. It was a 50-50 call for the referee who carried out the inspection. My hunch was that if the match ref had got to the ground (and Lancing were happy to travel) we would have played, but there were some very wet areas down the left-hand side of the pitch. Anyway, let's hope we get today's game on and also this Tuesday's when Sittingbourne visit us. COME ON THE WASPS!

MANAGER’S NOTES
Drew Cooney
We welcome everyone back for today's game against Broadbridge Heath. It was only pointed out to me on Sunday by my assistant Ian Nichols that last Saturday’s game at Ashford was my 100th game in charge. I’d like to thank everyone at the club for their support over this time and to all the fans and players who I have worked with. More importantly, thanks to Ian, Sarg and Matt who make my life easier and who are always on hand to help and advise when things don’t quite go to plan. I think Ian worked out that during these 100 games we have managed to secure points in just over half of those matches played. For a club like ours that’s a stat we as a management group should be proud of, but as ever we will look to improve. The weekend’s win away at Ashford United was very much needed as we had found ourselves in a real slump in form of late, not helped by several key players missing but nevertheless a really disappointing period. I said to the guys after the game at the weekend that was seven goals we have put past Ashford this season, they would always be looked upon in pre-season as one of the certainties to make the playoffs or automatic promotion. We cannot do that to teams like them and then underperform against the sides in and around us, that’s not fair on us as a management team or as a club! We need more consistency from now till the end of the season. We were keen to build on the Ashford result on Tuesday night but the match against Lancing at East Court was postponed because of a waterlogged
pitch. The left-hand side of the pitch was pretty wet but we felt with a bit of forking of the surface water that we could have got it in a playable condition. Lancing were prepared to travel and accept that the match referee might call it off when they got there but he made his mind up, to the frustration of all concerned. I think the game has been called off three times now - let's hope it's a case of fourth time lucky! As ever we thank to all the Santas that made the trip to Ashford on Saturday and look forward to seeing a few more today and again on Tuesday when we welcome high-flying Sittingbourne.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES I would like to extend a warm welcome to all Wasps supporters, the Bears’ players, management, officials and supporters as well as this afternoon’s referee Redmond Egan and his assistants Perry Hart and Pete Andrews. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality. Chris Simmons’ Broadbridge Heath have picked up a good number of points in January with two wins, a draw and one defeat and they are just above the two relegation places on 18 points after 20 matches. They are six points from safety with a game in hand over Erith & Belvedere who are 3 points better off than Beckenham Town who have played 20. The Bears started the year with a 4-0 win at Phoenix Sports, then beat Ashford United 1-0 at home, lost to Sittingbourne 2–0 at home and on Tuesday evening had an astonishing 6–6 draw at home against Merstham. The visitors were 2-0 up, then 3-1 up and the first half ended 2-3. Broadbridge Heath then drew level, but Merstham regained the lead before scores were then level again at 4-4. It then went 4-5, 5-5 before the Bears took the lead for the first time with three minutes to go only for the Moatsiders to grab a late equaliser. Scorers for Broadbridge Heath were Mason Doughty who got the first three, then Tadley Bromage with a brace followed by Ashley Mutongerwa.
season. Matt Daniel who scored on Saturday had also scored our only goal in the 20th match last season, which was followed by two home games and two wins so hopefully that sequence will continue. We host Sittingbourne here next Tuesday and then travel to Chichester the following Saturday 3rd February and back here again the following Saturday for the first ever visit by Horndean. We welcome Kate Moss as our physio this afternoon. It’s Kate’s home debut following her first match with us at Ashford last Saturday. Thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home. Enjoy the match Richard Tramontin (Chairman)

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to East Court for today’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Broadbridge Heath.
Following last weekend’s win at Ashford United, Drew Cooney’s Wasps are currently in 13th place with 23 points from 20 matches which is exactly the same number of points after the same number of matches as last www.egtfc.co.uk

meant that we hadn’t been promoted in the season above) - though we sat on top of the league by some margin. Broadbridge Heath were well down the table The programme talked about one of the club’s unsung heroes on the occasion of his 80th birthday - Geoff Harris. He did more or less everything but perhaps “I have lost count of the number of times I have painted and decorated the clubhouse” tells what he did best. Here in 2024 Geoff is no longer with us. We had already played Broadbridge Heath away twice - in October in the Sussex Senior Cup followed by the away league match in the middle of November. In the Cup match we saw stacks of goals with the match going to extratime before we won 6-5 ! In the league match there was just one goal - from our Tobi Hutchinson. Here in March, it was a bit of a struggle with very few clear chances coming either team’s way. Broadbridge Heath would probably have settled for a goal-less draw, but with just a minute or two to go our Tom Saunders scored to give us our second 1-0 win against them. Lester Medcalf
Cover from our game with Broadbridge Heath in 2006
It’s been a few years since we last welcomed Broadbridge Heath to East Court - and even when we were both in the Sussex County League we seemed to quite often miss each other by being in different divisions. But here are the only two programmes I have for past games played here at East Court. We’ll start with East Grinstead v Broadbridge Heath on Saturday 11 November 2006 in division two of the County League. The programme was a busy one with a look back at four recent events. On the previous Friday evening (November 3) we had the first of these events when we played league leaders Wealden (now AFC Uckfield) here at East Court and had beaten them 2-0 with Dave Gellatly and Phil Thompson scoring. Friday night games were a bit unusual weren’t they? Well yes but the next evening saw the second of the four events - and the biggest of them - when a crowd of some 3,000 came to our annual fireworks display. I fully remember the work required to set things up on the Saturday and then do the tidying up on the Sunday. Event number 3 came on the Monday evening when our reserves played Epsom & Ewell and won 2-1. A significant event as it was our reserves’ first win of the season. And lastly on the Wednesday evening our under 18 team had been at home to Salisbury City in the first round proper of the FA Youth Cup - the first time we’d got that far. Not quite as many spectators as there had been for the fireworks but 257 people saw our visitors wining 2-0. So would the Broadbridge Heath game make it a special fifth event ? We were second in the league table - Steve Norris had been in charge for 6 weeks or so - while Broadbridge Heath were some way below in 15th place. 2 goals from James Horner and a third from Adam Dart gave us a 3-0 win. It had been a rather special 8 days. Next up we’ll talk about East Grinstead v Broadbridge Heath on Saturday 8 March 2008 - still in the County League division 2 (which

CLUB NOTICE Supporter Behaviour In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match. Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the fixture against Three Bridges earlier this season foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.
Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA. We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead. As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour.

Outnumbered: Two take on one against Phoenix Sports.
Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.
Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.

TODAY’s GUESTS
BROADBRIDGE HEATH Broadbridge Heath Football Club was founded in 1919 by local ex-members of the armed forces who had just returned from the 191418 Great War. In the very first season of competitive football, with only 12 registered players, the club won the Horsham and District Championship and Challenge Cup. In 1970-71 the Horsham League amalgamated with the West Sussex Football League and Heath joined Division Three. Promotion was won to Division Two the following season. In 1978-79, following promotion from the Premier Division of the WSFL, Broadbridge Heath joined the Southern Counties Combination League which at that time was a feeder to the Sussex County Football League. The SCCL amalgamated with the County League in 1983-84 with Heath becoming founder members of Division Three. The club moved to the Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre in Wickhurst Lane in 1987 where we had exclusive use of the stadium pitch, bar and social area. At the end of the 1987-88 season the club were promoted to senior football in Division Two for the very first time. Heath remained in senior football for 20 years, with one season (1998-99) in Division One. Despite succeeding on the pitch off the field events deteriorated when the club’s landlord decided not to renew the lease to run the bar and social area and for several years with no home and no assets, the club struggled to survive. At the end of the 2007-08 season Heath were relegated to Division Three and things got even worse when the team finished second from bottom two years later and only avoided demotion because there were not enough clubs in the feeder leagues with facilities to satisfy County League requirements. Season 2010-11 saw an improvement with the team finishing in sixth position and a year later they finished one place higher behind some very good intermediate sides. As a result of restructuring in the leagues above, and despite finishing fifth, Broadbridge Heath were promoted back to senior football in Division Two at the end of the 2011-12 season. The finished in sixth position and reached the
12
www.egtfc.co.uk
final of the SCFA RUR Cup where they narrowly lost 1-0 to Division One runners-up East Preston. A year later the team went even better by finishing the season as runners-up to Eastbourne United AFC and with that promotion back to Division One for only the second time in the club’s history. In the first two seasons Heath came ninth and eighth followed by a slight dip in 2017-18 to 15th, but they bounced back a year later to end in sixth place which at the time was our highest ever finish. Things also improved off the field when, on 2 August 2019, the club took possession of their new purpose built facilities, a ground to satisfy the grading requirements for Step 5 football with two further pitches for use by our adult and youth teams for matches and training. In January 2020 former Heath player Chris Simmons took over as First Team manager, initially on an interim basis but with performances improving he was offered the position on a permanent basis three months later. COVID then struck and two seasons became null and void, after his first full season in charge the team finished in seventh place and last season they were crowned Southern Combination League champions with promotion to the Pitching In Isthmian League South-East Division, a new challenge and experience for everyone at the club.
