WELCOME TO EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN

Good afternoon and welcome to all those who have made the trip up from Burgess Hill. They had a good 3-0 win over Ashford on Tuesday to end a run of disappointing results so it ain't gonna be easy today!

Tuesday's match at home to Hythe was certainly entertaining. We probably deserved something from it given that we twice led and had other chances.

I didn't think much of Hythe as a footballing team - they were route one with bells and whistles - but they were always a threat from set pieces and created quite a few chances. Shame we couldn't get a point but it was good to see four under-21s in the team by the endthe future is bright as Matt, Zack, Jasper et al are all getting used to football at this level and improving as a result.

COME ON THE WASPS!

MANAGER’S NOTES

Welcome everyone to today’s local derby against Burgess Hill.

We have had a busy spell with this being our third game in a week and we will have three more in six days when Ramsgate come to East Court next Tuesday. In our last three matches we’ve had one win, one draw and a really unfortunate loss on Tuesday in the 92nd minute to Hythe, which was a really tough one to take.

We managed to get ourselves in front twice against Hythe, but having not learned from the first long throw when they scored we conceded a second goal from another. The game was then snatched away from us in the dying minutes with another goal to Hythe through our own mistakes.

There were plenty of positives to take out of the game and plenty of chances created, we just need to learn quickly that defending set pieces is a huge part of this league and we need to be a lot better at it.

Injuries are still hampering the group, with skipper Glenn Wilson a doubt for today’s game and he joins Cads, Terriq and Deano on the injury list. Neither Spinks and young Adam are available for selection today, but we welcome back in Bobby Dunn, Remi and Greeny.

The bottom of the league is really starting to tighten up with both Beckenham and Erith still picking up points. We know that today’s and Tuesday’s game against Ramsgate won’t define our season but we need to make sure we put everything on the line to get as much as we can out of both these matches so we go into next weekend’s busy Easter bank holiday

fixtures in as strong a position as possible, both on and off the pitch. As ever the lads need every bit of support so, please make plenty of noise today. Six of our last nine games are at home and we need to take advantage of that.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to East Court for today’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Burgess Hill Town.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the Burgess Hill players, management, supporters and officials as well as this afternoon’s referee Dennis Torres Miranda and his assistants Daniel Cooper and Matthew Pollington. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality.

Gary Mansell’s Burgess Hill are currently 13th with 36 points from 30 matches. After losing six of their seven previous matches and drawing the other, they had a good 3-0 win over Ashford United on Tuesday with goals from Jay Beckford, Reece Hallard and Dan Perry with goalkeeper Fin Holter voted man-of-the-match. Mansell has made a number of additions lately including ex Wasp Tahjae Anderson and more recently Jake Goodman, loan defender Oliver Downs and centre back Nico Jones.

We were bitterly disappointed in Tuesday evening loss at home to Hythe Town, conceding in the 90th minute after leading 1-0 and 2-1. A draw was probably a fair result but the lead up to the winning goal was a major controversy. Henry Sinai broke from just inside his own half and was bundled over by the chasing defender just outside the box when he would have been one-on-one with their keeper. How that wasn’t deemed as a foul and a red card, I do not know. Play was waved on and Hythe went up the other end, got a free kick and scored the winner. A bitter pill to swallow.

We come into this afternoon’s match three places below the Hillians on 28 points from 29 games and Drew and the lads will be looking to shake of the disappointment of the Hythe match and produce a similar performance that brought us the 5-1 win here over Littlehampton two weeks ago.

We are at home again on Tuesday when we host Ramsgate. We then travel to Herne Bay on Easter Saturday and our visitors on Easter Monday are Erith & Belvedere (ko 3pm)

Thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home.

Enjoythematch

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST

I have a couple of programmes for games played in the past on either side of today's date. I'll start with East Grinstead v Eastbourne United on Saturday 22 March 2003 in division two of the Sussex County League.

The club notes (presumably written by Bruce Talbot who was then our Chairman as well as our programme editor) are a very busy couple of pages starting by welcoming our visitors from Eastbourne with the news that they won't exist next season – or rather that the club name will not exist as they are going to merge with another Eastbourne club Shinewater. Here in 2024 there is a club called Eastbourne United Association in the Sussex County League – indeed our under-23s will be playing them in the Sussex FA cup final on April 8. The notes go on to talk about recent form. We were lying in second place in the league though a couple of losses in our last three games was a bit of a setback. However, we are reminded that having lost just five league games in the last 16 months was “a record that everyone involved should be proud of” and especially manager Bobby Smith. Even the loss of four first-team regulars for the game didn't seem to bother anyone – the “squad is big enough” with young players being given an opportunity to make their mark.

Elsewhere much was made of the work being done around the ground to improve our facilities. In particular a first attempt was being made to put some seating in the stand. (In 2002 there was no seating there at all – it was standing only.) We were hoping that club members would buy one of the planned 75 seats – 21 had so far been bought. We were 14 points behind the league leaders Eastbourne Town while Rye in third place had seven games in hand over us (and over Eastbourne Town as well). Second place would need to be fought for. Eastbourne United were just below halfway and we had beaten them 32 in the away match in November with a couple of goals from Ben Burns plus one from James Horner. But here at East Court we were to lose 3-0.

Moving on some nine years – Dave Gellatly the only player appearing in both 2003 and 2012 teams - we have East Grinstead v Hassocks on Saturday 24 March 2012 in division one of the Sussex County League.

In the very wet winter we have had in the 2023/24 season you will perhaps be surprised that Richard Tramontin's notes back in 2012 tell us that we have just one home match (and two away matches) left to play in 2012. And we had only played twice in February.

Manager Simon Funnell talks warmly of our two most recent games, especially getting a point in a 1-1 draw down in Pagham against one of the league's stronger teams. This had followed a hard-fought home match against relegation-threatened Ringmer where we had won 3-2. We also have a page talking about past games against Hassocks with the heading that we had never beaten them at home in division one with the last two meetings ending 0-0.

Here, we completed a league double with a home 3-0 win with goals from Dave Gellatly, Tony Reid and Ben Chick. LESTERMEDCALF

CLUB NOTICE

Supporter Behaviour

In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match.

Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the fixture against Three Bridges earlier this season foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.

Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.

Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA.

We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead.

As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour.

Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.

An unusual but effective challenge by Matt Wearie on Tuesday

BURGESS HILL TOWN

HILLIANS IN THE 21st CENTURY

The new millennium season saw Hillians take the County League championship with the team remaining unbeaten in the league until April; the club also had its best ever run in the FA Vase only being beaten after extra time by eventual finalists Tiptree United in the last eight, before a then club record attendance of 1598. With plans being laid for Southern League football, club directors, Gary Croydon and Eddie Benson appointed Danny Bloor as manager for season 2002–2003. The club was rewarded with yet another championship, the fifth in seven seasons.

Gary Croydon took over the Hillians again as the club entered the Southern League for the first time. After just missing out on the play offs, Burgess Hill Town moved over to the Isthmian League after the restructuring of the non-league pyramid.

For the next few years, the club established itself as a Ryman League club with a few midtable finishes and twice just avoiding relegation. In 2011/12 with the Hill struggling and with seven games to go manager Simon Rowland was sacked and goalkeeping coach John Rattle was put in charge. The club survived relegation with victories in the last two games of the season against Whitstable Town and Dulwich Hamlet.

For the following season Hillians returned to their original green and black colours. Former Brighton & Hove Albion player Ian Chapman was appointed as manager, and he guided the Hillians to eighth place.

In 2013/14 the Hillians achieved their highest ever finish in the pyramid, finishing sixth and just missing out on the play offs by one point and 2014/15 saw the club enjoy the greatest season in their history. Chapman’s side were unbeaten in the league until mid-March and went on to win Ryman League Division One South title by 11 points and gain promotion to the Ryman Premier League for the first time. They also equalled their best FA Cup run, eventually losing away to Dartford in the fourth qualifying round but having gained a memorable 3-1 victory at Sutton United in the previous round. In the FA Trophy, they beat

Aldershot Town of the National League 1-0 before losing narrowly to Dartford. A confident start to the Hillians’ first season in the premier division saw the team eighth in the league, but a disappointing second half saw them finish in 20th position. The club avoided relegation due to Farnborough being relegated for financial irregularities. The following two seasons saw the Hillians avoid relegation on the last day, but they did enjoy excellent runs in the FA Cup and in both seasons narrowly missing out on the first round.

After four seasons in the premier division, the club were relegated in 2019. The season was full of mixed emotions, with the long-standing management team of Ian Chapman and Stuart Tuck leaving the club after six very successful years. Ian was replaced by ex-Lewes manager Simon Wormull. Under Wormull the team also reached the Sussex Senior Cup for the first time in some 30 years but lost 2-1 to Bognor Regis Town in extra time at the Amex Stadium. The 2019/20 season started off with a 7-2 opening day victory over Hythe Town. Unfortunately, disappointing results followed, as well as early exits in both the FA Cup and FA Trophy, which saw Wormull depart in late October. Jay Lovett was appointed as First Team Manager the following month and guided the club to successive mid-table finishes.

Now, there is a feeling of optimism around the club with Gary Mansell installed as the club’s new manager as the Hillians look to improve on recent seasons.
