FOOTBALL MANAGEMENT Manager

Good afternoon and welcome back to East Court for the visit of a Chichester side who have made a great start to the season, and are tucked in nicely behind surprise early pacesetters Three Bridges. The table still has a lop-sided look with two clubs, because of their cup exploits, only having played three games. As for us, it's amazing what three wins in a row has done to transform the mood and lifted us 13 places in a fortnight. Today's game, against a side who only conceded their first league goal in their seventh fixture on Tuesday (against Bridges) will be a good test of our confidence. We've had the better of home meetings with Chi since their promotion so let's hope that trend continues. A reminder that we are back here on Tuesday against Hassocks in the Sussex Senior Cup.

MANAGER’S NOTES

Sussex Senior Cup on Tuesday and this will give some of the lads who have sat on the bench the opportunity to put themselves in the frame for these league games. As ever we thank the supporters for your support. It’s been nice to see a few more fans at the games and sticking around after the games to speak to the lads and management group, it goes a long way. People forget it’s not just me Sarg and Ian, but Matt Wheeler has played a huge part already this season with me personally and our other youth teams in terms of player recruitment. We must not forget people like him who give up their time during the week and on Saturdays for the club. Good luck to us - Drew

We welcome everyone back for today’s game against high-flying Chichester City, who start the day in third place and who have won four of their last six games, only losing once against top of the table Three Bridges on Tuesday night 1-0. It has been a good couple of weeks for the lads with three wins in three but more importantly two clean sheets and only a soft penalty given away at Horndean stopping us from having three clean sheets. The lads have worked hard in training and, as easy as it sounds, we have just gone back to some fundamental basics, playing from front to back at pace and getting in and around Omar up top. There have been a couple of standout performances from Greeny, who has come back into the squad, and a special mention to Omar for his performance against Ashford in our last home game. A really rugged performance away at Broadbridge Heath on Tuesday was very pleasing. We were without Omar (through concussion suffered at Horndean) and had Ben Aubery just coming back from a niggle so we were fairly lightweight up top. They are a good little team and on that small pitch we struggled to get runners in behind, but I thought they defended very well. We must take the momentum from the last three games into the remaining fixtures this month, starting today. Cray Valley, who no doubt will be strong league favourites, are the visitors next week so getting maximum points today would put us in great shape for that challenge. We also have Hassocks wedged between these fixtures in the

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES Good afternoon everyone and welcome to East Court for this afternoon’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Chichester City. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all Wasps supporters, the Chichester players, management, officials and supporters as well as today’s referee Joshua Langley-Fineing and his assistants Martyn Milligan and Nathaniel Roff. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality. Miles Rutherford’s Chichester lost their unbeaten run in the league on Tuesday evening at home when table topping Three Bridges beat them 1-0. Noel Leighton’s 56th minute goal was the first league goal Chi have conceded this season. They are currently in third place with 13 points from six games, having beaten Lancing, Broadbridge Heath, Hythe Town and Beckenham Town and drawn their opening match against Phoenix Sports. When I wrote my last programme notes a fortnight ago, we were pointless and at the foot of the table and I said that our performances had deserved more, and we needed that first win to boost confidence and kick-start our season. We faced tough opponents in Ashford United that day and confidence certainly was rekindled after Max Walsh’s goal set us on the path to a comprehensive 6-0 win with Max netting four. We then made the long trip to league newcomers Horndean on Saturday and came away with a 3-1 win and then travelled the much shorter distance to Broadbridge Heath on Tuesday evening and won 1-0. These three wins have taken us from the foot of the table to seventh with nine points after seven matches and Drew and the lads will want to continue that winning run this afternoon against what will be stern opposition. A repeat of last season’s 3-2 win here on 2nd January would be most welcome. I would like to give a special thanks to our fans that travelled all the way to Horndean. Your support is truly appreciated and we were so pleased the journey back was with a smile on everyone’s faces. Our next match is a second round Sussex Senior County Cup tie against Hassocks here on Tuesday evening (kick off 7.30pm) – season tickets are not valid for this cup match. We are at home again next Saturday in the league against Cray Valley

PM. We were then due to the be away at Ramsgate the following Saturday (28th October) but as Ramsgate are playing in the FA Trophy that day, the fixture will be rescheduled but the date has yet to be set. Our Under-23s will be in action here on Thursday 26th October when they host today’s opponents’ U23s in the second round of the Sussex Under23s County Cup (ko 7.30pm). It was great to see the number of volunteers our colleagues at Horndean and Broadbridge Heath had helping them and I’d like to make another appeal for more volunteers to lend us a hand here on match days. Areas where we could really do with more support include bar, stewarding, turnstiles, media etc so if anyone wants to get involved, please speak to me or one of my colleagues. Thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home.

were back then) and we have a copy of a newspaper report. Arsenal won 12-0. 2017/8 was Ashford’s first season in the Isthmian League and for most of the time since then they have been one of the stronger teams, though never quite making it to the top Isthmian league. But when they started back in 2017 they were struggling – and the programme is full of uncomfortable noises – “it’s been a real difficult 10 days. We’re playing players who are not ready or not good enough” though they hope that the signing of four new players will help. The programme’s league table shows us that Ashford are third from bottom with seven points and who were bottom of the league? Well it was us with one win and a couple of draws for five points. So how did the game go? With neither side really creating much. We did take an early fifth-minute lead through Charlie Ponstance only for Ashford to equalise in another 10 minutes. And that was it – I guess we would have settled for a point. If you’ve had your memories jogged by this piece then I’d be happy to hear from you at lestermedcalf@btinternet.com

We played Sidlesham on this day in 2006, winning 2-1

As we approach the middle of October I have picked out a couple of programmes for games played in the past on today’s date. First up is East Grinstead v Sidlesham on Saturday 14 October 2006. This was a County League division two match and of great significance to ourselves was that it was Steve Norris’s third game as our manager. He was of course to play a significant role in our improvement over the next few years – an improvement which played a big part in our promotion to the Isthmian League. We still see him from time to time here at East Court, and in fact he was here for the 6-0 Ashford match a couple of weeks ago. Not surprisingly the programme carries details of Steve’s first two matches in charge – a 1-0 defeat away to Lancing in the Sussex Senior Cup and then a 1-1 draw away to Wealden (now called AFC Uckfield). A penalty after only five minutes saw Ben Burns put us ahead, only for Wealden to be awarded their own penalty some 15 minutes later. The programme’s league table shows us in the middle of the table with three wins, three draws and two defeats. Sidlesham had played a couple of game more than us and had avoided drawing any of them – 5 wins and, as you’ve probably worked out, five defeats as well. Did Sidlesham break their win or lose habit? An early goal came their way but we managed to equalise just before half-time thanks to Ben Burns. And some 15 minutes from the end Ben was in the right place again to score what turned out to be the winning goal. I’m going to move on 11 years for the next programme when we made the journey into Kent for Ashford United v East Grinstead on 14 October 2017. An Isthmian League match of course. It was an excellent programme with lots to talk about. It had its own look back at Ashford games played in the past on 14 October, one of which was an FA Cup first qualifying round match in 1893! They found themselves drawn away to Arsenal (or Woolwich Arsenal as they

CLUB NOTICE Supporter Behaviour In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match. Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the recent fixture against Three Bridges foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.

Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA. We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead. As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour. Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.

Max Walsh scores the first of his four goals against Ashford.

Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.

TODAY’s GUESTS

CHICHESTER CITY The first Chichester Football Club was formed in 1873 and added the title 'City' to its name in 1948. The club’s original home was Priory Park but it relocated to Oaklands Park in the early fifties. The club was represented at the inaugural meeting of the Sussex County FA in 1882 and featured in the first ever Sussex Senior Cup in the same year, losing 5-0 to Storrington. In 1896 Chichester became members of the newly formed West Sussex League and remained there until they joined the Sussex County League in 1920. The first major honour was achieved in 1926 when they won the Sussex Senior Cup but inter-war success was limited. In 1960 Chichester clinched their first Sussex County League title and then retained it the following season, shared the Sussex RUR Cup with Brighton & Hove Albion after a 2-2 draw and reached the first round of the FA Cup, only to lose 11-0 to Bristol City. Chichester beat Eastbourne in the RUR Cup final in 1964 and recaptured the league title in 1968. In the 1970s Chichester’s fortunes were mixed; the high point being another league championship in 1973 and a good run in the FA Amateur Cup. At the end of the decade, City faced relegation for the first time. However, the appointment of ex-Plymouth and Portsmouth player Richie Reynolds as manager sparked an amazing revival which saw City claw their way to safety. The following season was one of City’s best ever as Reynolds masterminded a league championship win. The club was relegated though in 1983 after a dismal season. Promotion and Division Two Cup success followed in 1985 but they returned to the Second Division for the 198788 campaign, winning the Division Two Challenge Cup again in 1988. Steve White took over as manager in 1990 and the side enjoyed another promotion campaign alongside Division Two Challenge Cup success. The club struggled for several seasons in the County League before again being relegated to Division Two in 1994. In 1997, City returned to Division One after

12

www.egtfc.co.uk

finishing runners-up. Permission was finally granted for floodlights at Oaklands Park and they remained in the top flight of the Sussex County League in one guise or another for over 20 years. Following a millennium merger with Portfield FC the club became known as Chichester City United FC and in 2004 Adie Girdler and his assistant Gary Brockway led Chichester to their first Sussex County League title since 1980. The club also won the RUR Cup for a third time in 2007. At the start of the 20092010 season, following discussions with Chichester District Council, it was agreed to revert back to the name of Chichester City FC as this more clearly reflected the club and the city. The club faced challenges after this, both on and off the pitch, for a number of years. But a top five finish in the Southern Combination premier division in 2015-16 was followed by third place in 2016-17, a six month unbeaten run in the league and a record fifth round appearance in the FA Vase. In 2018 Chi gained promotion to Step 4 for the first time after clinching the SCFL premier division title in 2018-19. Darin Killpartrick joined the coaching staff in 2019 and an exceptional start to life in the Isthmian League was complemented by an extraordinary FA Cup adventure as City made it to the first round. In a unique FA Cup first round draw Chichester, the lowest ranked team left in the competition, were given the bye into the second round, only to lose 5-1 away at Tranmere Rovers.
