East Grinstead Town FC is an unincorporated association / Community Amateur Sports Club. Good afternoon and a warm welcome back to the OHOB Community Stadium, and in particular to our first-time visitors Hollands & Blair. At the same stage of the FA Cup last season we suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Alfold, the prelude to a season which started badly but improved gradually and ended up with the lads comfortably securing Isthmian League football for a ninth season - no mean achievement. The squad has largely remained intact and Drew, Sarge and Ian have been working the boys hard in pre-season. Results in friendlies have been mixed but we have played a lot of opponents from higher leagues. The overall signs are positive. A reminder we start the new league season against Chatham next Saturday, kick off 3pm.

MANAGER’S NOTES We welcome everyone back to the OHOB Community Stadium for our first competitive game of the 2022-23 season as we take on Hollands & Blair in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup. Myself, Ian [Nicholls] and Sarg [Steve Sargent] have worked really hard over the past eight weeks to put together what we see as a very competitive squad for the new season. We have managed to fend off much interest from other clubs in a few of the lads who were with us last season and we have strengthened in keys areas with players who have bought into what we will be about this season and what we want to achieve. As this is my first full season in charge it was important to get the group organised as early as possible and we spent the first 2-3 weeks of pre-season working mainly on fitness. We started the pre-season games fairly early into the schedule and facing a Crawley Town team very early on wasn’t ideal with a heavy defeat at home.

year's battle to stay up that the lads have the fight in them, now we have brought back their natural ability to playing good football so its been really enjoyable. We appreciate the league is going to be very competitive this season, probably more than every with the addition of three teams with big budgets but we are very confident that the squad we have put together over the course of the season will be very competitive and we ask the local fans to carry on supporting us and building on the growing numbers we have had back down at the club watching us last season. The support of our fans is never underestimated by me, Ian, Sarg or the players and we are all looking forward to a good season with you all. Good luck to us! Drew

Since then we have played several other teams in leagues above and have performed very well. We have also scored plenty of goals against the teams in similar leagues which is also promising. The last 2-3 weeks of pre season though have been the most encouraging as we have worked a lot on our shape and the lads have really taken on board how we want to play this season. We know as a coaching team from last www.egtfc.co.uk

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

away kit. My sincere thanks go to Kieran Duggan and O’Halloran & O’Brien for their third year as sponsor of The OHOB Community Stadium and all our other loyal sponsors. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ben Harwood and his team at Complete Turf Care for a fantastic job on the pitch. I would like to thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to The OHOB Community Stadium and I wish you all a safe journey home. A reminder that we start our league campaign next Saturday here at home against newly promoted Chatham Town (ko 3pm). May I lastly point out that the consumption of alcohol in the ground or premises is permitted during the period of a match but under FA rules and in compliance with our licence, glasses, glass bottles, or cans containing alcohol are not permitted outside of the Clubhouse and must not be brought into the ground.

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The OHOB Community Stadium for today’s FA Emirates Cup Extra Preliminary Round tie against Hollands & Blair. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our visitors from Hollands & Blair as well as to today’s referee Peter Dingle and his assistants Adrian Hudson and Kirk Ritchie. It’s also a very special welcome back to all Wasps supporters for the new season and many thanks for your continued and loyal support. Hollands & Blair play in the Southern Counties East League Premier Division where they finished ninth last season. They played their opening league match of this season last Saturday and drew 1-1 away at Holmesdale. Ben Brown put them ahead after 15 minutes with a header from a free kick. Wasps’ fans will probably recognise two ex-Grinstead players today: George Benner and coach Darren Anslow. Prize money for today’s tie is £1,125 to the winners and £375 to the losers. The winners will travel to either Lancing or Roffey on Saturday 20th August for the Preliminary Round. If the scores are level today after 90 minutes, the tie will go to a replay at Lordswood FC on Tuesday evening as works continue to replace Blair’s home grass pitch with a 3G surface. It’s great to see such a high number of last season’s players returning and we welcome to the Wasps family the new players that have joined. Drew, Ian and Sarge have a great bunch of lads who work hard for each other, and they had a very impressive final pre-season friendly last Saturday against a full- strength Eastbourne Borough of the National League South, dominating the first half and coming in at the break 1-0 up, even though we then conceded three times in the second half, one just on the final whistle. Today sees the launch of our new home kit. My thanks go to Tech Intellect, our front of shirt sponsors this season and their sister company Amarti, the front of shirt sponsors of our new

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST It’s the opening round of this season’s FA Cup – with the eventual winners being decided a long time ahead in some 9 months time. Of course neither of the teams that we will see today are likely to feature on that far away day at Wembley.

more recently, in fact in the previous year 1957 against Aston Villa. And they had both lost. In Bolton’s 1953 final they had been 3-1 ahead 10 minutes into the second half and then been pulled back to 3-3 with a couple of minutes to go.

But I was fortunate enough to see four finals back when I was still at school – my school being in Southend-on-Sea – and, using the programme that I bought on the day at Wembley Stadium, I’d like to tell you about the first cup final that I went to London to see. It was the 1958 final between Bolton Wanderers and Manchester United.

But with extra-time looming Stanley Matthews provided the cross that produced a winning goal for Blackpool. Manchester United’s defeat in 1957 owed a lot to a challenge on their goalkeeper Ray Wood by Aston Villa’s Peter McParland in the first few minutes – a challenge that would probably have earned him a red card in today’s football. Ray Wood was left unconscious with a broken cheekbone.

The programme has a photo of the old Wembley Stadium on the front cover. For those of you who don’t know the stadium it was also used for greyhound racing. And that greyhound area became part of the athletics track used for the 1948 London Olympic Games. By the way which city has hosted the Olympic Games three times ? Yes London - in 1908, 1948 and more recently of course in 2012.

TURN TO PAGE 11

My copy of the programme is in pretty good condition with no fold at all, although the staples holding the 20 pages together have left a mark on the front cover – the technical term is that the staples are bleeding. The programme reminds us that both of the finalists had been in FA Cup finals in the not too distant past. Bolton had played in the 1953 FA Cup Final against Blackpool – this game being shown on television. We didn’t have a television in 1953 but a neighbour of ours had recently bought one and, knowing our family’s keen sporting interests, we were invited in to watch the 1953 final. (For many people the Queen’s coronation one month later was the first time they watched something on a television – for me it was the Cup Final!) Manchester United had appeared in the final

10

www.egtfc.co.uk

EastGrinsteadTownFC

@egtfcwasps

Centre-half Jackie Blanchflower took over in goal – we didn’t have substitutes in those days – before Ray Wood came back on to the pitch on the left-wing before taking over in goal again in the last few minutes as Manchester United pressed hard for a late goal. The afore mentioned Peter McParland had scored two second-half goal for Aston Villa with Tommy Taylor scoring for Manchester United a few minutes from time – the reason Ray Wood went back in goal. Let’s get back to the 1958 final and pick up on the programme’s notes on Manchester United when it talks about “that shattering disaster at Munich, which robbed English football of so much grand young talent”. On their flight home from a European Cup match in Belgrade in February 1958 the plane needed to re-fuel in Munich. The airport was covered in ice and slush and on the third attempt by the pilots to take off the plane crashed, with over half of the 50 or so passengers (including several of the players) dying. Somehow the club was able to make it to that year’s FA Cup final. In the aftermath of the Munich crash there was of course considerable support for the Manchester United team in the Cup Final but on the day it was a 2-0 win for Bolton with both goals from Nat Lofthouse (who had played in that 1953 loss to Blackpool). His second goal was somewhat controversial as he bundled the United goalkeeper Harry Gregg over the goal-line – at a time when players could shoulder charge goalkeepers. And a small side issue. In the last month of the football league season both Bolton and Manchester United had league matches away to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. I went to see both of these matches and was absolutely convinced that Bolton were a better team than Manchester United.

TODAY’s GUESTS

HOLLANDS & BLAIR THE LAST FEW YEARS … In May 2016, Blair won the Macron SCEFL Challenge Cup Final and it was after the cup triumph that Paul Piggott called time on his seven-year spell as Blair boss. Following with tradition Blair made the decision to promote from within and named Bryan Greenfield as the new manager. The Scottish left-back he'd made more than 300 appearances for the team and had has the full backing of the club. YOUNG BLOOD Although not a memorable season on the pitch, Blair finished down in eighth in the SCEFL table but quickly went out of all cup competitions. That said we did play in the FA Cup for the first time in our history, beating Horsham YMCA down in Sussex in the Extra Preliminary Round before losing to Ryman South Whyteleafe away in a replay. The one big boost for the club was the progression of numerous youngsters from the Under-16 squad into Greenfield's first team but after a promising start things unfortunately didn't work out for Jock and after a poor start to the 2017-18 SCEFL season he departed. NEW MANAGERS COME AND GO Clint Gooding, formerly an assistant to Paul Piggott during his spell as manager of Blair, took over in November 2018 and the former Gravesend & Northfleet striker led the club, who only had two points on board at Christmas, to the safety of 18th in the table picking up 29 points to move above both Rochester United and Rusthall, quite a remarkable feat that he and the players should be proud of. However, following the end of the 2018-19 season, Clint took the decision to step down as Blair boss with Reserve Team Manager Darren Blackburn being immediately installed as his replacement. Darren was no stranger having previously played for the club for a number of seasons and has also had a big part in the emergence of our youth section. Unfortunately for both parties this didn't work out, despite Daz putting his heart and soul into the job, the struggles on the pitch which saw

12

www.egtfc.co.uk

Blair fighting another relegation battle, eventually saw him leave his role in March 2019. Co-Chairman and former first team manager Paul Piggott took over first team duties for the remainder of the season and steered the club to safety. HALSEY ERA Having confirmed their SCEFL Premier Division status with a 3-0 victory over Rusthall late in the 2018-19 campaign, Blair announced that former Herne Bay boss Simon Halsey will be the new manager for the 2019-20 season. After a few seasons struggling at the wrong end of the table, a new manager, aided by experienced assistant Luke Harvey, brought an influx of new players, a mixture of youth and experience, which gelled very quickly and the team spent most of the campaign, that was unfortunately ended early by Covid-19 in March. The start of the 2021-22 season saw the club struggling at the wrong end of the table, although a new club record attendance of 504 watched the home game against neighbours Chatham Town. PORTER ARRIVES... When Halsey departed in late October, Scott Porter was brought in to replace him after another caretaking stint as manager for Paul Piggott. They went on to finish ninth in the SCEFL Premier and also reached the final of the Kent Senior Trophy where they were narrowly beaten by Sheppey United 2-1.
