On Tuesday we travel to Cray Valley PM, which won't be easy, kick off 7.45pm.
2022-23 line-up Good afternoon and welcome to our opening game of our ninth season as an Isthmian League club. Our opponents today are back at this level for the first time since 2017 and it looks as if they have built a pretty good squad for their return to Step 5, so we're expecting a difficult start to the League campaign. Last Saturday's hard-fought but deserved 1-0 win over Hollands & Blair means the first hurdle on the road to Wembley has been cleared. Next stop is Lancing in the preliminary round next Saturday.
The Bank Holiday weekend brings us a trip to Ashford United on the 27th followed by Haywards Heath Town's visit to the OHOB two days later. Good luck to Drew and the lads today. East Grinstead Town FC is an unincorporated association/CommunityAmateurSportsClub.

5 MANAGER’S NOTES
www.egtfc.co.uk
As ever I'd like to thank all the fans that were at last week's FA Cup and ask them all to spread the word about the new team we have put in place this season and continue to grow the numbers watching at our home games. The local support is not only very welcome for the lads but is imperative for the progression of the club. Good luck to us!
EastGrinsteadTownFC @egtfcwasps
DREW COONEY We welcome everyone back to the OHOB Community Stadium for our first league game of the season. After last week's1-0 win at home to a strong Hollands and Blair side it will be nice to get the league campaign underway. Last week was the first time in 22 years I haven’t started the season playing so was a very surreal day for me Ipersonally!thoughtthe lads did great last week. It's always difficult playing in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup as your first game of the season. There was obviously a fair amount of pressure on myself and the guys to get the win against a team from a lower league. To be fair to Hollands and Blair they are a strong side and will be pushing in their league for promotion this season. If you look at their side on paper most of that team have played at our level or above so to get the win and more importantly a clean sheet was a great Westart.welcome Chatham this week who are newly promoted to this league, but were runaway winners in their league last season and have added even more fire power to their already impressive squad. Our lads will have to be at their best again this week and have continued to build on what we have been drilling into them in training. We will have to put that into practise if we are to get what we want out of today's game.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES EastGrinsteadTownFC @egtfcwaspswww.egtfc.co.uk 7
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The OHOB Community Stadium for this season’s Isthmian League South East Division opener against Chatham Town. I would like to extend a warm welcome back to all our visitors from Chatham Town as well as to today’s referee Aleczander Ovens and his assistants Jack Phillips and Shawn Barclay. It’s also a special welcome back to all Wasps supporters for the new league campaign. The Chats won promotion back to the Isthmian League after an absence of five years, finishing second to Sheppey United in the Southern Counties East Premier League at the end of last season. They notched up 100 points and finished with a positive goal difference of 102. Like Wasps, the Chats were involved in the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup last weekend and they too won their way through to the next round. They beat Little Common 2-1 and next travel to Colliers Wood United in the Preliminary Round. A couple of former Wasps players may possibly feature for the Chats this afternoon - Ainsley Harriet and Malachi Robinson. I’m sure they’ll get a warm reception from the East Court crowd. It was great to start the 2022/23 season with a win in front of the home fans last Saturday in the FA Cup, beating Hollands & Blair 1-0, despite missing a penalty and hitting the bar. We travel to Lancing next Saturday in the Preliminary Round. It was Drew’s first FA Cup match in charge, and he will be pleased to have notched up the win and to get a positive start to the season. Let’s hope the same will be true today as we start our league campaign although we know that Kevin Hake’s team will be a stern test this afternoon. I see we have been predicted to finish bottom come the end of the season by Isthmian South East Division supporters –I regard that as an added incentive as I’m sure Drew and the players will as well. Our next three matches are away – on Tuesday we travel to Cray Valley PM (ko 7.45pm) then as previously mentioned we are in FA Cup action at Lancing next Saturday and then play at Ashford United the following Saturday before welcoming Haywards Heath here on bank holiday Monday, 29th August (ko 3pm).

I would like to thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to The OHOB Community Stadium and I wish you all a safe journey home. Enjoy the match Richard Tramontin (Chairman)

The front cover of the programme tells us that our 2006/07 programme was considered to be the best County League programme and it also tells us that it was 40 years ago that we first played at East Court. To mark these occasions the front cover of the 2007/08 programme used the drawing that was on our programmes 40 years ago (and for a few years after). I am an admirer of programmes that use drawings rather than photos on their front Thecover.programme goes on in several places to talk about the substantial amount of work that had been done over the summer to improve our facilities – new stands, barrier round the pitch as well as hard standing all the way round, new dugouts and one or two other bits and pieces. As well as this improvement in our facilities our manager Steve Norris tells us that he had spent much of the summer recruiting new players with the hope of gaining promotion to the County League’s top division - the previous season’s mid-table ending had been a disappointment. The programme included brief details of where the summer’s new players had come from and what they could be expected to bring to the team. And the Rustington match? I wasn’t at the game but there were lots of goals with our four from Dave Gellatly, Ben Burns, Mannie Neville and Chris Day just outweighing Rustington’s three
First up is East Grinstead v Rustington on Saturday 11 August 2007 – 15 years ago. This was a County League division two match and, as it happens, it was to be Rustington’s first match as a senior club. They had gained first place in the third division of the County League in the previous season – by the small matter of 11 points. (Division 3 of the County League is intermediate status).
Rustington had also come up with something special in that in the year 2006 – the second half of the 2005/06 season and the first half of the 2006/07 season – they were not beaten in any County League match.

The league season gets underway and I bring you a couple of programmes from my collection for matches we’ve played in the past during the second week of August.

Simon Funnell also talks about the improvement in facilities, but not surprisingly he concentrates on the task ahead on the pitch – it’s going to be tough. In the County League “we knew there would be games when we could coast to three points. That won’t be the case this season.” And travelling to “places like Herne Bay and Guernsey will not be easy”. We have a match report of that first Isthmian League game away to Redhill - possibly our easiest journey of the season. We had a bright first 20 minutes but Redhill then dominated the rest of the first half, missing a number of chances. But inevitably they were to take the lead with a goal a few minutes before half-time. The second half was a bit closer with both sides missing chances and we really should have equalised five minutes from the end when a header into an open goal somehow went wide. But the footballing gods must have been with us when in the last minute Dan Turner curled in a shot from the edge of the Redhill penalty area. The programme continues with features about our visitors from Horsham – a good history of the club followed by pen pictures of their players. And then programme editor Bruce Talbot has the last page of the programme (his 29th year with the club) to again talk about the work that had been done in the last few years, while reminding us that help would be needed even more in the future to maintain and, where appropriate, improve what we now had. And the match? Well we celebrated our first Isthmian League match with our first Isthmian League win. Horsham had much of the first half but it fell to our Steve Sargent to open the scoring just before half-time. And a few minutes into the second-half we scored a second with John Sinclair scoring. And in the very last few seconds Horsham took advantage of a defensive mistake to score. But no time to think of equalising so it finished 2-1 to us. If you’ve had your memory jogged by this article then I’d be happy to hear from you at lestermedcalf@btinternet.com.
notes again concentrated on the work done to bring the facilities up to the standard required for the Isthmian League, with much of the work needing to have been completed before the end of the previous Managerseason.
