WELCOME TO EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN

Good afternoon and welcome to today's visitors Erith Town.

A glance at the league table shows just how tough today's game will be. Ten games in and we have taken just one point against teams above us so we can expect The Dockers to really test us.

As Drew mentions in his notes, November gives us a great opportunity to sort out our home form with five games out of seven here at East Court.

Is it still a factor that opponents turn up, see a really good playing surface (the best grass pitch in the league probably) and raise their game? If it is then we need to match them and use the energy of our supporters to make the difference!

Come on the Wasps!

MANAGER’S NOTES

We welcome everyone for today’s game against newly promoted Erith, who have had a great start to the league campaign.

I know Woody, their manager, well from our playing days here at East Grinstead and he has put together a very experienced team that will no doubt be competing in the top half of the league.

Today is the start of a very busy month. We have seven games in November, six of those in the league and five at home.

We have spoken a lot to the lads lately about our home form which, if I’m honest, has been nowhere near good enough and not acceptable.

We must be fully focused on turning this around and putting some back to back wins together in front of our own supporters. If we can do that continue to pick up results on the road we will climb the table.

We welcome back Charlie Harris this week who was suspended for the Three Bridges game, but now loose Alex for three games due to his red card. With him and Tom Cadman out now this is going to no doubt cause us problems but also gives opportunity for someone within the squad to step up.

The rest of the squad is looking good. Two new lads made their debut last week. Jabari, who is on loan from Chatham, was superb and got his first of many goals hopefully for the club. Khalifa also made his debut in the middle of the park and

showed his class and leadership which again will help bring on some of our youngsters.

We thank everyone for their support down in Chatham last week and ask that you get behind the lads both today and on Tuesday at Broadbridge Heath as we start a very busy month.

Thanks, Drew

PAST PROGRAMMES

I have a couple of programmes to share with you today for games played in the past in early November. We'll start by going back some 22 years for East Grinstead v Worthing United on Saturday 2 November 2002. This was a match in division two of the Sussex County Leaguewith our 2024 team manager Drew Cooney in our team for the match.

We had only lost one of the six home matches we had so far played in that one month– a “debacle” was how Bruce described it as we had lost to Steyning in a Division Two Cup match 6-0! He and manager Bobby Smith were probably somewhat relieved that in our most recent match (at home of course) we had beaten Peace Pottage 3-0 in what had been 17-year-old Drew Cooney's second game for the club.

The programme's match report tells us that our three goals had come from Jamie Liddell in the first half with second-half goals from Dave Gellatly and a rare goal from full back Kevin Wright - only his second in 150 games. The legaue table showed us in fifth place while Worthing were also fifth – but fifth from bottom. So, a bit of a surprise to find Worthing going home with a 1-0 win.

Moving onward a few years we have the programme for East Grinstead v Carshalton Athletics on Tuesday 3 November 2015 in our second season in the Isthmian League.

Richard Tramontin's club notes have a lot to tell us about the previous Saturday. Firstly we had played Bognor Regis Town in the FA Trophy. When the draw was made we were the home team. However, because of another event which I'll come to in a minute, we played the match down in Bognor. And not surprisingly against the very strong Bognor side we lost 3-0 with all the opposition's goals coming in the first hour. Probably because Bognor eased off we had more of the game in the last 30 minutes and might have scored a goal or two. But we didn't. So why was the home match played down on the Sussex coast? As Richard tells us we were holding our annual fireworks display on that

Saturday evening, which we'd been running for just over 15 years. Richard thought the display was the best we had put on. However, we had been unable to find a sponsor and the number of people who watched the fireworks for free from the top of the East Court hill was getting bigger and bigger. We had made a loss – for the first time – and we would have to consider if we would organise it for next year. (We didn't hold it in 2016 – or indeed have we organised it since.)

The programme's league table shows us third from bottom while Carshalton were in the middle of the table. And with 89 minutes gone we were leading 2-1 with goals from Callum Emptage and Greg Cundle. However, games don't last 90 minutes these days and in the last four minutes Carshalton scored twice to beat us 3-2.

ERITH TOWN

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DOCKERS

Formed in 1956 as Woolwich Town, the Dockers attained senior status in 1995-96 upon reaching the London Spartan League Premier Division in 1995-96. By then the club had already changed their name to Erith Town, reflecting a move to Erith Stadium.

After one year in the Spartan Premier, the Dockers successfully applied to cross the pyramid to the Kent League.

After struggling in the lower reaches of the League for three seasons, the Dockers celebrated the new Millennium with a then best seventh place in 1999-2000 and reached the London Senior Cup Final, losing 5-1 to Bedfont.

In the following seven seasons Erith only once reached such heights again, finishing seventh in 2003-04.

The appointment of former Fisher Athletic player Mark Tompkins as player-manager midway through 2006-7 saw an upturn in fortunes and the following season he led the team to fifth in the Kent League. He also brought the club their first silverware as a senior club as record appearance maker Alan Hanlon lifted the Kent League Cup after a 1-0 win over much-fancied Hythe Town in the final at Folkestone FC.

Tommo’s departure on the eve of 2008-09 lead to the appointment of Steve O’Boyle who took the Dockers back to the Kent League Cup Final for a second season. After drawing 1-1 after extra time against Croydon, the Dockers went down 3-1 on penalties.

Tony Russell took over the reins when O’Boyle departed in October 2010 guiding the club to a third successive mid-table finish but bringing the Kent Senior Trophy to the club after a 3-1 win over Tunbridge Wells in the final.

Having achieved a new best of fourth the following season, Russell departed for neighbours VCD Athletic with Erith Town top of the League in November 2012 and after a brief spell with James Collins in charge, Tompkins returned to take the Dockers to new personal best of third spot.

Tommo repeated the feat in 2013-14 before

departing and a turbulent 2014-15 saw three managers and a Houdini style escape from relegation under Martin and Joe Ford. Two further seasons of struggle followed before Mark Deveney took over the club in the summer of 2017, immediately appointing former owner Albert Putnam as President for his work as player, manager and Chairman in over 50 years with the club.

On 26 August the club took part in the last ever game at Brentford’s Griffin Park ground, losing 6-3 to the Bees’ B team in the London Senior Cup semi-final.

After a fourth place finish in 2022-23, their best for ten years, the Dockers moved to share with Sporting Club Thamesmead at Bayliss Avenue as they bid to progress on and off the field.

With this in mind, the Dockers appointed Kay Deveney as their first female Chair in 2023, with Mark Deveney continuing as CEO. Under their stewardship the club has just experienced the most successful season in their history, finishing with two trophies – the SCEFL Challenge Cup and the Kent Senior Trophy – and winning the SCEFL Play-Off Final which saw The Dockers promoted to the Isthmian League South-East to play football at Step 4 for the first time.

We now look forward to the 2024/25 season with huge optimism.

We were deserved winners over Bridges last Saturday and could have won more comfortably had we taken our chances. Top pic shows goalscorer Jabari Christmas firing in a shot and, below, Bridges scramble to clear a corner in the second half. Photos: Stuart Gibson.
