WELCOME TO EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN

Good evening and welcome back to the OHOB Community Stadium and a warm welcome to all those who have made the midweek trip from Faversham.

Another big game - as they all seem to be in this congested league - tonight but we go into it in good heart after a vital 1-0 win on Saturday against Corinthian, secured by a well-taken early goal from Sam Greenwood, rightly celebrated with our fans behind the goal!

Like Corinthian, Faversham's lowly position is not reflected in their recent results. We will have to be at our best to get a win but the incentive is there to climb to 14th if we can.

We're down at Littlehampton on Saturday before welcoming Three Bridges here next Tuesday. Make sure you get behind the boys again tonight! Come on you Wasps!

MANAGER’S NOTES

Good evening everyone and a warm welcome back to the OHOB Community Stadium for our game against Faversham.

We’re now into a run of SaturdayTuesday-Saturday fixtures and, providing the weather behaves, the chance to play regularly and build some momentum in our season after a frustrating few weeks.

It was good to be back here on Saturday for the first time in a month. Good home form is vital if we’re to keep climbing the table so it was great to get three points against Corinthian thanks to Charlie Greenwood’s early goal.

I thought we started the game really well but there were always going to be periods when we came under pressure. I think anyone who watches us regularly and monitors the league that there is little to choose between two-thirds of the teams. We knew Corinthian would be tough and so it proved. We had to work hard for the three points and at times it wasn’t pretty, but I think we got what we deserved.

Faversham will be just as tough tonight. They had an excellent win at Littlehampton last week and then took a point off Sheppey on Saturday so they will come here quite confident of getting a result. But beating Corinthian was great for our own confidence and I know the lads are looking forward to tonight’s game and the opportunity it gives us to climb the table.

Finally, congratulations to D’Armando

DREW COONEY

Lawrence who made his debut on Saturday. Everyone at the club is committed to bringing players through from our under-23 team, otherwise there is no point in having one. Grant and Andy do a great job with the boys, the same as Jay with our under-18s. I know it gives them as much pride and pleasure when we promote from within to the team as it does me to be able to give them their opportunities. Long may it continue.

Thanks again for the support on Saturday, be loud and proud again tonight.

Good luck to us! Drew

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

Good evening everyone and welcome to The OHOB Community Stadium for tonight’s rearranged Isthmian League South East Division match against Faversham Town after the originally scheduled fixture on 21st January was postponed due to a frozen pitch.

We extend a warm welcome to Sammy Moore, his players and staff, the Lilywhites’ officials and supporters, as well as to today’s referee Benjamin McDonald and his assistants Christopher Stobart and Stephen Ryan. We trust you all enjoy your short stay and our hospitality.

Sammy Moore left Potters Bar Town in November when they were sitting at the top of the Isthmian Premier League to replace Simon Austin at Faversham who himself had replaced John Embery and Jermaine Darlington just five weeks earlier. Lilywhites didn’t have a good first half of the season, but things have picked up in 2023. They are still propping up the table with 13 points from 24 games played, four points behind Corinthian who have a game in hand. Then come Sittingbourne, five points ahead and then Burgess Hill on 25 points from 22 games.

Faversham took a 2-0 lead after just six minutes on Saturday at seventh placed Sheppey United with goals from Michael Ademiluyi and Kieron Campbell, but then conceded twice and had to settle for a draw. This followed a 2-0 away win at Littlehampton who played the second half with ten men. Sammy Moore recently wrote that he was targeting today’s match against Wasps as a must win.

Drew Cooney will be thinking along the same lines and will be encouraged after our win on Saturday against Corinthian which followed two defeats against Sevenoaks and Chatham where we had played much better football and were very unfortunate to not have won at least one if not both matches. Charlie Greenwood topped off his recent consecutive man-of-the match displays scoring his debut goal for us on Saturday.

Grinstead are currently in 16th place on 26 points after 21 matches, 13 points ahead of the Lilywhites and with three matches in hand. Things

continue to be very tight in and around us and a win tonight would see Wasps move up three places and still with games in hand over most of the teams around us.

It was encouraging to see 18 year old D’Armando Lawrence make his first team debut off the bench on Saturday following a good performance for the under-23s in their Sussex Under-23s County Cup 4-2 win against Peacehaven & Telscombe. They are back in action here on Thursday against Faversham Town in the Development League.

Tonight is the first in a run of ten consecutive Tuesday-Saturday games for the First Team. We travel to Littlehampton on Saturday and are at home again next Tuesday evening when we host Three Bridges, followed by trips to Lancing and Sittingbourne.

Whatever the outcome of this evening’s match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to The OHOB Community Stadium and I wish you all a safe journey home.

Enjoy the match

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST

I don’t have too many programmes for matches played in the past in early February –which perhaps suggests that the weather tends to be at its worst at this time of year. However, I do have a couple of games to share with you helped by the programmes we produced for the matches. First up we have East Grinstead v Shoreham on Saturday 6 February 2010. This was a Sussex FA RUR Charity Cup third round match.

Both teams were in division one of the Sussex County League, though we still hadn’t played each other in the league. But only two weeks before this RUR Cup match we had met in the Sussex Senior Cup at Shoreham’s Middle Road ground. It had been our first game for five weeks following some horrible wintery weather - Shoreham won that match 1-0.

Since that Senior Cup match we had played a further three games, all of which we lost – with some horrible performances as well. Away to Mile Oak where “there didn’t seem to be too much desire” and then a 7-0 defeat away to Crawley Down – where we didn’t seem to make things too difficult for them.

Richard Tramontin’s notes tell us that this would be the fourth attempt to get the RUR match played and, if it was played, it would be our first home match for eight weeks. The league table in the programme shows us fourth from bottom though we did have games in hand over most of the teams surrounding us. Shoreham were doing much better in seventh place.

We were missing a number of players for the match and also had goalkeeper 18-year=old Liam Lindsay making his first team debut. And one of our players was sent off on the stroke of half-time for retaliating after he was fouled. But we were still in the match after 90 minutes with neither side having scored.

Extra-time included a penalty to Shoreham –but Liam Lindsay marked his first appearance with a save – and there were still no goals when the ref blew his whistle after 120 minutes. So penalties to decide things – over the years we don’t seem to have been too successful with penalty deciders. And this was one of those occasions with Shoreham winning 4-3.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10

Moving on some five years to our first season in the Isthmian League match we have East Grinstead v Ramsgate on Saturday 7 February 2015 with John Sinclair on the front cover of the programme.

The club notes tell us that we are having a very bad run with five successive defeats so far in 2015, including a 6-0 defeat on the previous Saturday against Whyteleafe. Rather disappointingly this bad run had come after four wins in December.

So no great surprise that the programme’s league table shows us four places off the bottom - though one of the teams below us was indeed Ramsgate (and Horsham were also below us). Burgess Hill were at the top and were unbeaten in their 28 games so far.

We had already played down on the Kent coast on a “very wet and blustery October day” and had taken a lead only for Ramsgate to come back at us to win 3-2 – our goals coming from Michael Belli and Layton Schaaf.

So this February game was one that both teams would have liked to win. In fact nobody won because it was a 1-1 draw with Kareen Boyle scoring our goal.

If you would like to share any memories of the above games with me then please contact me at lestermedcalf@btinternet.com.

FAVERSHAM TOWN

FAVERSHAM – THE LAST FEW YEARS

The 2016/17 season was one of transition for the Lilywhites on the pitch, and success off it as they forged ahead with Phase One of their ambitious rebuilding programme

A tenth-place finish was achieved with a young squad as manager Ray Turner dealt with a number of unexpected player departures, which led to a mid-season wobble.

However, in May 2017 MP Helen Whately opened the new changing rooms as the first stage of the stadium redevelopment was finally completed. Another significant advance came when, for the first time, the club were able to field Kent Youth League standard squads at every age group from Under 13s upwards in the 2017/18 campaign, a mark of their growing stature in the region and of their commitment to a successful youth policy.

In 2018/19, a disappointing start to the season led to Turner stepping aside Phil Miles and Dan Chapman were appointed as jointmanagers in his place. The lacklustre season continued, and in the end the team finished 17th, two places and ten points clear of relegation.

After an indifferent start to the 2019/20 season, Town parted company with their joint managers in October. In their place, new manager James Collins brought in assistant Nick Davis and Coach Brad Sandeman. A huge influx of players, coupled with the departure of players including club stalwart Matt Bournethe club’s record appearance holder - meant that by December a new-look squad was taking to the field and a new era had begun.

The curtailed 2020/21 season saw Town finished their six games unbeaten, despite playing all of the promotion favourites, indicating that the club had turned the corner. And ahead of the 2021/22 campaign the club signed its biggest ever shirts deal with Smart

Office Solutions.

Despite a creditable 12th place finish the season ended on a low with Chairman (Paul Bennett) and Manager (James Collins) resigning within days of each other. In came Gary Smart owner of SOS (shirt sponsor) who then appointed John Embery and Jermaine Darlington as joint managers.

The club parted company with the two jointmanagers after another disappointing result on Saturday 15th October. Current boss Sammy Moore was appointed on 29th November 2022.
