WELCOME TO EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN
East Grinstead Town FC is an unincorporated association / Community Amateur Sports Club
Good afternoon and welcome to East Court as we take on Herne Bay, who will be keen to make an immediate return after a one-season stay in the premier division.
Our own season has yet to really get going, although against Hythe in the FA Cup last Saturday we created enough chances but the Cannons were more clinical in front of goal. A warm welcome back to Tom Cadman, whose grandfather Peter and dad Antony have both played for us in the past. This is Tom's second spell here and with all his experience at this level I'm sure he will make a big impression this season. Because of their FA Cup replay, our League Cup tie against South Park last Tuesday was postponed. This game will now be on Tuesday 12 September, kick off 7.30pm. COME ON THE WASPS!

MANAGER’S NOTES
We welcome everyone back for today’s league game against Herne Bay. After relegation last season Herne Bay will be right up there with a hope of bouncing straight back into the premier division so it will be another hard game. Since the Pagham away game it’s been a frustrating couple of weeks, conceding seven goals with the same team over two games just isn’t good enough. We can have all the possession in the world and play decent football but if we don’t start to take our chances and learn to defend set pieces we will find ourselves in a similar league position to last season, which is something none of us want. The ambitions of both the management team and the lads are much higher than that so we must put the last couple of weeks behind us, move on and improve –starting this afternoon.
We have secured the services of Tom Cadman this week which sums up our ambition, young players like him Matt Weire and Michael Wilson alongside last season’s regular Max Walsh are a true measure of where the club wants to be and these lads, alongside the experienced boys, will no doubt secure a really good future for the club.
We have got a busy September coming up and I think every game scheduled is at home so getting a positive result here today and then going away to faststarting Sevenoaks on Monday could leave us with a really good month in front of our home fans and the chance to get good points on the board.
As ever, we thank the fans who make the effort to come home and away and ask that they buy into this young and exciting
squad. There will be ups and downs but you need to stick with what we are trying to do.
Good luck to us!
Drew

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to East Court for our first home Isthmian South East Division match of the 2023/24 season against Herne Bay.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our supporters, the Herne Bay players, management, officials and supporters as well as today’s referee Billy Woods and his assistants Abdul Olol and Ericsson Temu. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality.
The last time we played today’s opponents here was in October two years ago, the season Bay won promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division through the play-offs. The match finished 0-0. Two of our starting XI that evening will feature today, Matte Pierson and Glenn Wilson, while now manager Drew Cooney was on the bench.
Steve Lovell’s Herne Bay drew their opening match back in the South East Division at home to Burgess Hill a fortnight ago. They trailed by 2-0 on 90 minutes. Former Wasp Gil Carvalho then pulled a goal back in the third minute of added time and Archie Burnett completed the comeback with an equaliser in the 96th minute.
They also drew their FA Cup Preliminary Round tie last Saturday away at Bedfont 1-1. Theo Osinfolarin opened the scoring from the penalty spot on the hour mark, but Bedfont equalised in added time. Steve Lovell’s men won the replay on Tuesday evening 3-0 and will travel to Redhill in the next round.
It’s not been such a great start for Drew Cooney’s Wasps, despite winning their competitive opener in the FA Cup 4-0 at Pagham with a truly impressive display. We since faced Hythe Town twice – firstly away in the league opener losing 4-0 followed by a 1-3 exit in the FA Cup here last Saturday.
Drew and the lads know it will be a tough encounter this afternoon, but they are determined to kick start the season and get some points on the board. I’d like to welcome Tom Cadman back to East Court. Tom started the season at Whitehawk. Hopefully his grandfather will be here today watching him make his return – Peter is known to many at East Court during his many years at the club where he was a player, manager, chairman and groundsman and is a Life Member.
We are away to Sevenoaks Town on Bank Holiday Monday (ko 3pm) and at the time of going to print, we didn’t have a match next Saturday but that may change – see website and twitter for any updates. Weare at home on Saturday 9th September in the FA Trophy First Round Qualifying against Sheppey United.
Our Under 23s are here at home this coming Thursday the 31st August against Tooting & Mitcham in the Suburban League Central Division (ko 7.30pm).
I won’t apologise for again repeating that we are always on the lookout for more volunteers on match days. Areas where we could really do with more support include bar, stewarding, turnstiles, media etc so if anyone wants to get involved, please speak to me or one of my colleagues.
Thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home.
Enjoy the match

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST
I have a couple of programmes to share with you for past games played on today’s date. We start with East Grinstead v Pagham on Saturday 26 August 2006 in the second tier of the Sussex County League. (And of course we played Pagham only a few weeks ago in 2023 in the FA Cup.)
The front cover of the programme shows our 2023 team manager Drew Cooney in his younger days together with Kevin Wright and Ben Burns. In case you can’t read it the front cover tells us that our programme was voted the best in the County League for the previous 2005/06 season. Lee Quinn was our main programme man in those days - with a bit of help from Bruce Talbot (who was then also our chairman).
In his Chairman’s column Bruce spoke about the work done by a small but busy team of helpers to get the pitch ready over the summer – and now that is done there are a number of improvements needed on other parts of the ground. For example, back then we didn’t have any seating.
The programme’s league table shows us in the middle of the table with one win and two draws in our first three games while Pagham were a couple of places above with two wins and one defeat. There are brief match reports of those two drawn matches – I can remember watching one of those draws 1-1 away to Storrington.
So did we maintain our unbeaten start to the season or did Pagham pull further away from us ? We normally struggled against Pagham in those days and this game was no exception with Pagham taking home the points in a 2-1 win. Our goal came from Grant Rigler. Coming much more up to date we’ll have a look at the programme for East Grinstead v Corinthian Casuals on Saturday 26 August 2017 in the Isthmian League. This was our fourth game of the season and would be followed quickly by our fifth match away to South Park on the Bank Holiday Monday. In all three of our previous games we had at one time been in front, but in the two league
matches we were unable to hold on to that lead, losing away in the Channel Islands to Guernsey and drawing at home to Molesey. However we’d had better luck at home to VCD when we won 3-2 in the FA Cup - the Corinthian Casuals programme contains a full report of this FA Cup match together with a number of action photos of our three goals. In welcoming Corinthian Casuals to East Court much was made of their strength with a number of players coming to the club from higher level teams. They had won one and lost one in their two league matches so far. And they were to show that strength by taking us apart with a 5-0 win. Things didn’t get better in the Bank Holiday Monday game when South Park beat us 3-1.
If any of you have had your memories jogged by this piece then I’d be happy to hear from you at lestermedcalf@btinternet.com

AROUND THE CLUBS
A last-minute own goal gave Ashford United victory over Sevenoaks Town at Chatham Ashford United hope to be back at their own Homelands Stadium at the start of September, but in the meantime the Nuts and Bolts are borrowing Chatham Town's Bauvill Stadium-and they welcomed Sevenoaks Town last night, both sides knowing that a win would take them top. The Nuts and Bolts made the breakthrough ten minutes after the break, Danny Parish with the goal, but they weren’t ahead for long, Emmanuel Mensah scoring his second of the season. It looked like the sides would have to settle for a point each, and then right at the end an own goal gave the hosts three points and a spot at the summit.
United have now won four of their last five matches against Town, whom we meet on Monday. ***
Burgess Hill Town gave a debut to defender Jack Taylor in Saturday's goalless FA Cup draw with Erith Town.
Taylor, who moves to the More Than Tyres Stadium on loan from Sutton United, isn't new to Sussex. The centre back is a graduate of the Bexhill College Football Academy, and whilst studying went on to play Under-18 football for National League South side Eastbourne Borough before becoming part of their first team squad as they made it into the Play Offs at the end of the 21-22 season. This brought him to the attention of the folks at Gander Green Lane, and he signed for Sutton in summer of 2022.
He was part of the United side which took on
Merstham in the Surrey senior Cup last November, and indeed scored the opening goal for his side in a 3-0 win.
***
Ashford United welcomed Beckenham Town in an all Isthmian South East clash at Chatham Town in the FA Cup preliminary round last Saturday and we got a five goal thriller. An own goal gave the Nuts and Bolts the lead, but Becks quickly scored at the right end through Anthony Adesite. Shortly after the restart ex-Wasp Tom Carlse restored home advantage, but immediately George Goodwin drew Becks level, and on the hour mark Dieko Falade got what proved to be an away winner for Town. Lancing came from 2-0 down to beat Badshot Lea 3-2 thanks to goals from Charlie Bennett, Henry Watson and Tyrone Madhani with the goals. Bedfont Sports welcomed Herne Bay to the end of the runway and Theo Osinfolarin earned Bay a midweek replay which they won 3-1. After a goalless draw last Saturday, Burgess Hill won their replay at Erith 2-1 thanks to Lewis Finney’s extra-time goal. Erith & Belvedere hit Littlehampton for six in the last round and managed another cup clean sheet, but could only score two this time around. Finn O’Mara and Chris Dickson’s penalty saw them defeat Stansfeld 2-0. Faversham, Sheppey United, Ramsgate, Horndean, Cray Valley PM and Sevenoaks also progressed.
