A warm welcome to everyone who has made the journey up from Hampshire for the first meeting between our clubs here at East Court. Horndean have been one of the most improved teams in the division since the turn of the year but we will go into the game in good heart after a tremendous - and much needed - 5-1 win here on Saturday against Littlehampton.
Considering the number of experienced players absent it was an outstanding performance but we can't rest on our laurels. The division is starting to throw up some strange results each matchday and our job of making sure we're still a Step 4 club next season still needs to be finished.
COME ON THE WASPS!

We welcome everyone back for tonight’s rescheduled league game against Horndean.
They come into the game in fine form off the back of three wins and a draw in their last six so we know we will have another testing 90 minutes this evening.
We made a welcome return to our home ground on Saturday. As I’ve mentioned previously it’s been a tough run of late so the weekend’s game against Littlehampton produced a much needed performance with goals to go with it.
The overall display and attitude was what impressed me more than anything else and we need to carry the positivity from Saturday into tonight and Saturday’s game against Phoenix Sports.
Special mention to Henry Sinai for his performance. I thought he was superb on his home debut, was a constant threat on either side and showed he has a real eye for goal.
Terriq Hall-Anderson also performed very well and has waited patiently for his opportunity for a start. He grabbed that with both hands.
We hope to have skipper Glenn Wilson and Jerson de Santos back this week after injury which will strengthen us further for a really important and busy period we have coming up for the rest of March.
As ever we thank all the fans from the
dressing room for their brilliant support on Saturday and ask for more of the same in the upcoming games, starting tonight!
Drew
Good evening everyone and welcome to East Court for today’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Horndean.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the Horndean players, management, officials and supporters on their first visit to the home of East Grinstead Town. A warm welcome also to all our Wasps fans, who went home extremely happy on Saturday, and to today’s referee Ciaran Fidler and his assistants Joshua Plumb and Greig Walker. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality.
Michael Birmingham’s Deans scored in the first minute at Hythe on Saturday through Connor Duffing, with Zackary Willett then scoring a hattrick in an impressive 4-0 win. That followed two losses against Three Bridges and Ashford United following two wins over Broadbridge Heath and Sevenoaks Town. Dean’s top scorer, Zachary Willet with twenty two goals this season, has scored eight in the last five matches.
Horndean are currently in 14th spot with 31 points, with games in hand over all teams around them having only played 25. They are two places above Wasps with four more points and two games in hand. Wasps won the reverse fixture in October at Five Heads Park 31 with two goals from Connor Tighe and one from Kiye Martin. Tommy Scutt scored from the spot for the Deans, following an extremely dubious penalty decision for an alleged handball by Michael Wilson.
Like today’s visitors, Drew Cooney’s Wasps also had a great early start on Saturday against Littlehampton Town with Alex Andrade-Filipe scoring in the second minute with a great strike following a corner. Despite then conceding in the ninth minute, we dominated play and went on to win 5-1. It was an impressive all-round display with Henry Sinai voted man-of-thematch – he scored twice with Harrison Parker and Camron Lawson the other scorers.
The win was well deserved and crucial after a run of five defeats and Drew was particularly pleased being without the likes of Glenn, Wilson, Tom Cadman, Michael Wilson, Bobby Dunn, Jerson Dos Santos and Ryan Green.
We are away at Phoenix Sports on Saturday, another crucial match with Boyley’s third from bottom side currently just three points and two places below us, although we do have two games in-hand. We then have three home matches on the bounce - we host Hythe Town next Tuesday, the following Saturday our visitors are Burgess Hill, followed by Ramsgate on Tuesday 26th March.
Thank you all for coming along this evening and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home.
Enjoythematch,
RichardTramontin(Chairman)AUGUST

APRIL
Helped by the programmes we produced I'm going to talk about a couple of games played in the past on either side of today's date. First up is East Grinstead v Mile Oak on Saturday 13 March 2010 in division one – then the top division of the Sussex County League. John Sinclair features on the front cover of the programme – I seem to remember that he used to find himself on many of our front covers.
On looking at the programme for the first time in 14 years I was immediately struck by the thin-ness of it. Including the front and back covers there were only eight pages to read. Chairman Richard Tramontin explains that those normally responsible for the programme were away and Richard had been left to put the programme together at fairly late notice. He also welcomes the team's new manager Tony Beckingham to the club. He had brought most of his own support team with him and in fact had been in charge for our two most recent games, both of which had been away (and both of which we had lost). Tony had his own page and included brief comments on those two defeats. He was a little disappointed that in both games we had scored the first goal in the match but still lost, though he also talked about “a penalty that never was”. Obviously, the referee had thought differently. We did have a league table taking up one of the programme's pages which showed us at the bottom of the league with five wins, four draws and 15 defeats – our most recent win having been in the middle of December. The programme doesn't have a fixture list but a look at an earlier programme shows that we had played away to Mile Oak at the end of January and we had lost 2-1. Here at East Court we came up with our sixth league win. Goals from Luke Piscina, Dave Gellatly and Lucas Mann gave us a 3-1 victory. Moving on a few years we come to East Grinstead v Dorking Wanderers on Tuesday 11 March 2014, again in division one of the County League. (We had avoided relegation in the above 2009/10 season.)
We were having a much better season and really thought we might get into the top two –East Preston in top place had a big lead and were unlikely to be overtaken. However, we had only taken one point from our last two games.
Richard Tramontin didn't have to produce the programme for this game and spent much of his piece talking about work being done on the pitch and on the increase in the capacity of the stand – the existing seats not being available at the moment.
Manager Simon Funnell was disappointed with those dropped points and would like to see some improvement though he recognised that there were still lots of game to play – 13 in fact – and inevitably first choice players would miss games here and there.
The programme's league table shows us in fourth place with Dorking eighth (20 teams in the league). We had played the away game in the middle of September and had been beaten 2-0 but here at East Court a couple of goals from Sam Schaaf and a third form Marc Pelling gave us a 3-0 win

In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match.
Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the fixture against Three Bridges earlier this season foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.
Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.
Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA.
We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead.
As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour.
Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.
The club was established in 1887 and played their first match on 27 October against Red Star from Havant. They initially played at Blendworth Hill before moving to their current ground.
The club only played friendly matches until World War One, after which they joined the Waterlooville & District League, They won the league title in 1926–27, 1929–30, 1930–31 and 1931–32. They went on to join the Portsmouth League, winning Division Two in 1953–54. They were later promoted to the Premier Division, which they won in 1968–69, 1969–70 and 1970–71.
In 1972 they moved up to Division Four of the Hampshire League. By the mid-1980s they had reached Division One and became founder members of the Wessex Football League in 1986. The Deans struggled to make an impact on the league and in nine seasons never once managed to finish in the top half. After finishing bottom of the league in 1994–95 they were relegated back to the Hampshire League, where they remained until rejoining the Wessex League as founder members of the new Division Two in 2004.
In 2010–11 they were promoted to the Premier Division after finishing as runners-up in Division One. In October 2015 long serving manager David Carter left the club and on Portsmouth Academy Coach Craig Pearce and Simon Chamberlain were appointed as successors. Pearce and Chamberlain took the team to fifth place, Horndean's highest ever position in the Sydenham's Wessex premier league at the time.
The start of the 2016–2017 season Horndean FC saw the arrival of Michael Birmingham, Dutchy Holland, Jason Mann, and Matthew Driver. The season finished with Horndean in sixth place in the Sydenham's Wessex Premier division. The 2017-2018 Season saw the first team finish in fourth and in 2018-2019 second, its highest ever position in the Sydenham's Wessex Premier League. The following two seasons were curtailed due to the COVID pandemic, before Horndean recorded another strong season, ending the 2021/22 campaign in fourth place.
The 2022/23 saw the Deans make history with a League and Cup double. The club's first Wessex Premier title since joining as founding members in 1986 was secured on the final day of the season in a 1-0 win over Portland United. A club record attendance of 1,359 watched on when Zack Willett headed a late winner as Horndean were crowned champions. Just two weeks later the Deans won more silverware in the form of the Portsmouth Senior Cup, after defeating Fareham Town on penalties in the final at Fratton Park. The double was complete.
GROUND
Horndean play their home games at Five Heads Park. The ground was fully enclosed in 1981. In 1986 a 50-seater stand was added and a new building housing changing rooms and hospitality facilities was constructed inside the ground, to meet Wessex League standards. Previously the changing rooms had been in the social club, on the other side of the car park. A new turnstile shed was installed along with a decking area for spectators ahead of the 2021/22 season.
The club's promotion to the Isthmian Football League for the first time ever meant significant upgrades were made to Five Heads Park. The ground would be rebranded as the Stanley Chase Stadium and improvements came with a new seated stand, relocated tea hut and committee rooms as well as new dugouts with an additional covered standing area constructed in between. The existing tea hut and boardroom would become the club's management office and physio/ media room.
