A warm welcome to everyone who has made the journey up from Hampshire for the first meeting between our clubs here at East Court. Horndean seem to be adapting nicely to life as a Step 4 club if you look at the current form chart with four wins in their last six games. Ourselves, on the other hand, urgently need to get back the winning thread as the teams towards the bottom of the table start to bunch up. Erith's 3-1 win on Tuesday at Herne Bay was a surprise, but both they, Beckenham and Phoeinix Sports have shown that they are capable of winning in recent weeks. With the top two on the horizon, we could do with the boost of three points today. On Tuesday I thought the only difference between us and fourth-placed Lancing was they were more clinical in front of goal. Had we taken our chances we would have won - the margins in this league week in, week out are often very slender. COME ON THE WASPS!

MANAGER’S NOTES Afternoon all. We welcome you along to what is now a very important fixture for both teams. Points and positions at the bottom have tightened significantly so our recent run of poor results has added a bit of pressure to me and the squad. After a Saturday to forget last week, we made several changes for Tuesday night’s fixture against Lancing and all in all, given we had over seven players under the age of 21 on the pitch, I thought we played very well and were unlucky not to come away with at least a point.
Drew Cooney
I have set the group a two-week period where we need to see drastic improvement with everything they do on and off the pitch. If we don’t see this we will improve and update the squad. We hope to have Tom Cadman back in a week’s time and hopefully Glenn won’t be far behind him. More than ever at the minute we really need everyone’s support, the lads need to know we have the full backing of our fans through the good results and the not so good ones. Thanks again, Drew
A great strike for their first goal, we then had at least three clear chances which on another day puts us in at half time ahead. We pushed again in the second half but conceded to another good finish to lose the game 2-0.
It’s been a difficult week and off the pitch we have had to remind the squad as a whole what it means to play for this club and what goes on behind the scenes from not only myself but the other management staff to prepare for not only the games but the training sessions we put on during the week. We will no doubt lose a few players this week but that is part and parcel of taking responsibility for the recent results. But for me and more importantly for the club the likes of Spinksy, Zak, Remi and Jasper are the future of this club and they will now be given opportunity to stake a consistent place in the first-team squad. www.egtfc.co.uk

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES Good afternoon everyone and welcome to East Court for today’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Horndean.
We travel to Cray Valley PM next Saturday and then host Ramsgate the following Saturday.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the Horndean players, management, officials and supporters on their first visit to the home of East Grinstead Town. A warm welcome back also to all our Wasps fans and to today’s referee David Spain and his assistants Oliver Westgate and Owen Lawrence. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality.
Before those matches, our Under 23s host Eastbourne Town in the semi-final of the Sussex County U23 Challenge Cup here on Thursday 15th (ko 7.30pm). It would be great to get your support as we try to reach the Final for a second consecutive season, which will again be held at the Sussex County FA in Lancing and is scheduled for 8th April.
Michael Birmingham’s Deans have notched up four wins and a draw in their last six matches which has seen them move up to 13th spot with 28 points from 22 games and leap-frog Wasps. Their most recent win was on Tuesday evening against Broadbridge Heath (4-0), following Sevenoaks (3-0), Chichester City (3-1) and Erith & Belvedere (2-0), interspersed with a 1-1 draw at Cray Valley PM and a 1-0 loss at Burgess Hill. Top scorer Zachary Willet with eighteen goals this season, scored seven of Horndean’s thirteen goals in those last six matches.
Thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home. Enjoy the match Richard Tramontin (Chairman)

Drew Cooney’s Wasps have recently slipped to 16th place with 24 points from 24 matches. We have picked up five points in our last six matches but none in our last three. Our performance was much improved against Lancing on Tuesday evening and we created the chances to win the match. Drew will be demanding further improvement this afternoon and targeting a repeat of the win in the reverse fixture in October. Our scorers in the visit to the Stanley Chase Stadium were Connor Tighe (2) and Kiye Martin. EastGrinsteadTownFC

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST We’re going to have a look at the programmes produced for games played in the past on or close to 10 February. We’ll start with East Grinstead v Crowborough on Wednesday 10 February 2010 in division one of the County League - with, as normal, our midweek games starting at 7.30. Both teams were at the wrong end of the league table. Crowborough were in bottom place, though a recent change of manager had brought a couple of wins and a draw in their last three games while our last three league matches had seen three single goal defeats. The programme has a lengthy report on our most recent game - a cup match at home to Shoreham. Our Matt Crane was sent off on the stroke of half-time when the score was 0-0 and that was also the score at the end of the 90 minutes. And guess what? It was also the score after 30 minutes of extra time. But penalties saw Shoreham winning 4-3. Goalkeeper Liam Lindsay was making his first appearance for us and kept out a Shoreham penalty in the extra-time period. So what happened against Crowborough? The night was bitterly cold with some snow on the pitch and we didn’t look as if we wanted to be out there. Crowborough did look as if they wanted to be out there playing. They won 3-1 and overtook us - though they had played five more games than us. More or less a year later it’s East Grinstead v Arundel on Saturday 12 February 2011, again in division one of the County League - from which you will gather that we didn’t get relegated at the end of the above 2009/10 season. Manager Tony Beckingham recalls a 10-2 win at the end of January against Shoreham and so is rather disappointed with the recent defeats away to both Lingfield and Redhill, despite us leading at half time in both matches. Richard Tramontin’s chairman’s notes also talk about that win and those defeats but adds something that still surprises me - that our keeper Danny Harwood had been sent off in
10

the match at Lingfield and apparently he was our fourth goalkeeper to be sent off since the start of the season ! Was this true? Richard also tells us that, following damage done to our clubhouse by burst water pipes in a very cold winter, the clubhouse flooring had been re-laid. More work was still needed in the tea bar and the clubhouse kitchen. The programme’s league table shows us in ninth place and visitors Arundel three places below. We had played them in the RUR charity cup at East Court in October and they had beaten us 1-0. Here in February goals by Richard Sinden and Liam Baitup were now to give us a 2-1 league match victory. Lester Medcalf
COVER FROM THE PAST A simple cover from the 1995-96 season with almost a retro feel to the yellow shirt. Note - no Town in the name back then and who remembers calling the Waspsline? I certainly remember updating it on Saturday evenings!

CLUB NOTICE Supporter Behaviour In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match. Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the fixture against Three Bridges earlier this season foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.
Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA. We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead. As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour.

Oluremi Onabanjo in action against Chichester last Saturday.
Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.
Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.

TODAY’s GUESTS
HORNDEAN The club was established in 1887 and played their first match on 27 October against Red Star from Havant. They initially played at Blendworth Hill before moving to their current ground. The club only played friendly matches until World War One, after which they joined the Waterlooville & District League, They won the league title in 1926–27, 1929–30, 1930–31 and 1931–32. They went on to join the Portsmouth League, winning Division Two in 1953–54. They were later promoted to the Premier Division, which they won in 1968–69, 1969–70 and 1970–71. In 1972 they moved up to Division Four of the Hampshire League. By the mid-1980s they had reached Division One and became founder members of the Wessex Football League in 1986. The Deans struggled to make an impact on the league and in nine seasons never once managed to finish in the top half. After finishing bottom of the league in 1994–95 they were relegated back to the Hampshire League, where they remained until rejoining the Wessex League as founder members of the new Division Two in 2004. In 2010–11 they were promoted to the Premier Division after finishing as runners-up in Division One. In October 2015 long serving manager David Carter left the club and on Portsmouth Academy Coach Craig Pearce and Simon Chamberlain were appointed as successors. Pearce and Chamberlain took the team to fifth place, Horndean's highest ever position in the Sydenham's Wessex premier league at the time. The start of the 2016–2017 season Horndean FC saw the arrival of Michael Birmingham, Dutchy Holland, Jason Mann, and Matthew Driver. The season finished with Horndean in sixth place in the Sydenham's Wessex Premier division. The 2017-2018 Season saw the first team finish in fourth and in 2018-2019 second, its highest ever position in the Sydenham's Wessex Premier League. The following two seasons were curtailed due to the COVID pandemic, before Horndean recorded another strong season, ending the 2021/22 campaign in fourth place.
12
www.egtfc.co.uk
The 2022/23 saw the Deans make history with a League and Cup double. The club's first Wessex Premier title since joining as founding members in 1986 was secured on the final day of the season in a 1-0 win over Portland United. A club record attendance of 1,359 watched on when Zack Willett headed a late winner as Horndean were crowned champions. Just two weeks later the Deans won more silverware in the form of the Portsmouth Senior Cup, after defeating Fareham Town on penalties in the final at Fratton Park. The double was complete.
GROUND Horndean play their home games at Five Heads Park. The ground was fully enclosed in 1981. In 1986 a 50-seater stand was added and a new building housing changing rooms and hospitality facilities was constructed inside the ground, to meet Wessex League standards. Previously the changing rooms had been in the social club, on the other side of the car park. A new turnstile shed was installed along with a decking area for spectators ahead of the 2021/22 season. The club's promotion to the Isthmian Football League for the first time ever meant significant upgrades were made to Five Heads Park. The ground would be rebranded as the Stanley Chase Stadium and improvements came with a new seated stand, relocated tea hut and committee rooms as well as new dugouts with an additional covered standing area constructed in between. The existing tea hut and boardroom would become the club's management office and physio/ media room.
