WELCOME TO EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN
East Grinstead Town FC is an unincorporated association / Community Amateur Sports Club
Welcome one and all to East Court for our first home game of the season. A warm welcome to our visitors from Hythe, let's hope the Cannons have fired all their big shots against us last week and we can progress to the first qualifying round of the FA Cup - which would put Wembley next May only 12 more wins away!
The programme remains an online only product for this season and there is always space in it for contributions from anyone with the club at heart. I'm sure the Chairman would be happy not to have to write a column every week if his page could be filled by someone else.
A reminder that this is the first of three games this week with South Park here on Tuesday in the Velocity / League Cup before Herne Bay are the oppposition in the league next Saturday.

MANAGER’S NOTES
We welcome everyone back for this season’s first home game. We will know the visitors well after playing them only last week away in the first league game!
Hythe is never an easy place to go at any time of the season and this proved the case last week. After a promising performance against Pagham in FA Cup we were very much looking forward to this game, but Hythe, who finished last season in the play-off final, proved a really well organised unit yet again.
A really poor start and conceding after just 90 seconds seemed to seal our fate. We had a good chance to equalise straight after the goal, but this along with several other good opportunities weren’t taken and we were punished three times from clinical set pieces.
We have had a good week this week with boys and explained that this year although we want to get the ball down and play good football, we need to be able to adapt and mix it up as well. This will allow us to have a more consistent season.
We welcome Michael Wilson and Ben Aubery back this week who will no doubt make a huge difference. On the flip side of that we lose Omar Folkes (family issues) and Tommy Summerfield (tonsillitis). It’s been a really difficult preseason with injuries with seven out at the moment. This just shows the importance of a good healthy-sized squad which as always is hard to keep everyone happy. But in fairness to the lads, they are buying
in to what we want to achieve this season.
We have a busy schedule coming up with four games in under 10 days so will look to get back to winning ways in both cup competitions and take this form into the league.
As ever your support is critical for me and the rest of the management team along with the players. We ask you all to bring as many people down to the club this season to support the lads, your local team and to make East Court a tough place for opposition teams to visit.
Good luck to us!
Drew

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to East Court for today’s Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round tie against Hythe Town.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our loyal supporters, the Cannons’ players, management, officials and supporters as well as today’s referee Adam Merchant and his assistants Harvey Ransome and James Goodall. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality.
If today’s match finishes in a draw at the end of ninety minutes, there will be a replay at Reachfields on Tuesday 22nd August with a 7.45pm kick off, which would then be played to a conclusion with extra time and penalties if required. The winners of this Preliminary Round tie will go into the draw for the First Round Qualifying to be played in a fortnight, on Saturday 2nd September.
The Cannons enter the competition at this round whereas Wasps have already played Pagham in the Extra Preliminary Round a fortnight ago and won 4-0 with Conor Tighe netting a hat-trick after Max Walsh opened the scoring in the second minute.
It was the same 4-0 scoreline when we travelled to Reachfields on Saturday to face today’s visitors in the opening game in the Isthmian League campaign, but unfortunately not in our favour. Steve Watt’s team took an early lead from a long throw in and we conceded two more in the first half and never recovered after that.
Drew and his team will be looking to avenge that defeat this afternoon and progress to the next round. We welcome Michael Wilson back today after serving his one match suspension after his two added time yellow cards at Pagham.
Barring an FA Cup replay, we will be back here in cup action on Tuesday in the first round of the Velocity Cup when we host South Park (Reigate) (ko 7.30pm). We are at home again next Saturday in the League against Herne Bay and away to Sevenoaks Town on Bank Holiday Monday (ko 3pm).
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the small group of volunteers who put in so much work here to get the facilities ready for the season and our first pre-season friendly on 11th July against
Crawley Town which we narrowly lost 2-1.
I would also like to thank Ben Harwood and his guys at Complete Turf Care for their superb work on the pitch after removing the entire surface in May. Great job guys. We have had nothing but complements.
We are always on the lookout for more volunteers on match days. Volunteers are the backbone of grassroots football across the country. Why not support your local community club, get active and meet new people. Areas where we could do with more support include bar, stewarding, turnstiles, media etc so if anyone wants to get involved, please speak to me or one of my colleagues.
On a very sad note, we all offer our sincere heartfelt condolences to Grant Hearn and his family for the passing of his mum on Thursday.
Thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home.
Enjoy the match

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST
It’s FA Cup day and I’m going to bring you a couple of programmes from a couple of recent East Grinstead FA Cup matches.
We start with East Grinstead v South Park played on Saturday 25 August 2018 in the preliminary round of the FA Cup. You can see that the programme was also to cover the home league match on the Bank Holiday Monday two days later.
Chairman Richard Tramontin’s notes tell us that the South Park manager Mick Sullivan had seen us play – in a friendly match on the previous Monday evening against Mersthama game we had won 3-1. Let’s hope that we hadn’t given away any of our secrets.
Richard’s notes go on to say how much the winners and losers of our FA Cup match would receive (winners nearly £3,000 and losers nearly £1,000. 2018 would be the first time that a losing side in this early round of the FA Cup would receive anything.) He also goes on to tell us why Marcus Elliott, who had played in both of our league matches, would not be playing in the FA Cup match - he was on loan to us and, if he were to play for us, would be unable to play in the Cup for his first-claim club.
Manager Matt Longhurst’s notes look back at our first 2 Isthmian league matches which ‘have been very frustrating, with players missing through injuries and suspensions’. We had lost both and had conceded three goals in each of them. South Park had also lost their first two league matches. The programme’s league table shows that we were one of four teams who had lost both of their opening league matches.
And which of the two teams took another step on the way to Wembley? Just one goal was enough and it came from our Ben Wilson. The draw for the next round sent us along the M3 to play Fleet Town though I don’t have a copy of the programme for the match. By the time of the match we had played another two league matches – both of which we lost - and Fleet Town had also lost all their league matches. It was probably a match between the
two weakest teams still in the FA Cup!
Fleet Town had much the better of the first hour and had taken the lead after about 30 minutes and should have gone two goals up after missing an open goal after some 70 minutes. But with 13 minutes left we equalised with a powerful shot from George Landais and a few minutes later Jody Mongoy powered his way through the Fleet defence to score what proved to be the winning goal.
What happened in the next round? I’ll tell you that we came out of the hat with a trip into Essex to play Hornchurch and that I have a copy of the programme – but that’s all I’ll tell you for now.
If you have any stories about FA Cup matches that you have seen then perhaps you’d like to tell me at lestermedcalf@btinternet.com.

HYTHE TOWN 4, EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN 0
Hythe were victorious on the opening day of the season as they comfortably beat East Grinstead Town 4-0 at Reachfields. The Cannons lined up with a fairly similar team to last season, as seven players from last season's play-off final started the match, along with new signings Adam Molloy, Brad Schafer, Aaron Barnes and Jake Embery. It was a perfect start for the Cannons, as they took the lead after just two minutes, with Jack Steventon's long throw in being knocked onto Aaron Barnes, who guided the ball into an empty goal.
The visitors very nearly made it 1-1 on 21 minutes, as Max Walsh darted forward on the counter-attack, squaring it to Kiye Martin, who blasted his shot wide of the post from close range. Hythe managed to score their second on 33 minutes, when Ethan Smith rushed forward on the counterattack and slotted past Matte Pierson. It was Ethan's brother Liam who put the Cannons 3-0 up in the fourth minute of added time, glancing a header in from a Frannie Collin corner.
In the very first minute of the second half, the visitors had a good chance to get back into the game, as Connor Tighe strode forward and lifted his shot above Adam Molloy and onto the crossbar.
However, it didn't take long for Hythe to extend their lead, as Brad Schafer recieved the ball on the edge of the box on 53 minutes, skipping past the defenders and hitting a pinpoint shot
past the goalkeeper. On 63 minutes, the Cannons had a chance to make it five, when Frannie Collin stepped up to take a free kick, which he drove past the wall before it was tipped away by Matte Pierson.
On 83 minutes, Hythe had one final chance to add to the goals, when Johan Caney-Bryan had the ball in the box, firing his shot over the bar from close range.
Speaking after the match, manager Steve Watt said: “East Grinstead are a good side, they've made some good additions to their team this year and they always pose a threat.
"I just thought our intensity was too much for them at times with the way we set the tone, particularly from the front players, and how they pressed from the front. East Grinstead couldn't get a foothold in the game - we scored in key moments, and we obviously got the goal straight away, but we kept pushing and I thought in the end we ran over them a bit, with no disrespect to East Grinstead.”
