Good afternoon and a warm welcome to our loyal supporters and the travelling contingent from Hythe. Enjoy your visit and have a safe trip home. We could do with some belated festive cheer after a disappointing result on Boxing Day. Did a three-goal margin flatter the visitors? Possibly. But they were more clinical than us and, in truth, we never really recovered from conceding inside the first 20 seconds. Hopefully we will have a few experienced heads back today. Not Glenn Wilson perhaps, but Max Walsh and Omar Folikes - who are so important to how we play. Anyway, the games come thick and fast with a Jan 1 trip to Erith & Belvedere - managed by Matt Longhurst - another opportunity to pick up points and keep that gap between us and the bottom two. Come on the Wasps!

MANAGER’S NOTES Good afternoon everyone and we welcome you for today’s tough encounter against Hythe. Hythe boss Steve Watt is someone I’ve got to know well in my short spell in management. Our paths crossed a couple of times at the end of his playing days but he has been on hand to help and advise over the past 18 months which I very much appreciate. Hythe have won four from their last six and given our recent form this is going to prove a really tough test. We hope to have a couple back from injury (Omar Folkes and Jerson Dos Santos) but are still without Mr Reliable Glenn Wilson and are also missing Harrison Parker which is a huge void to fill at the back.

I was unfortunately away for the Sevenoaks game but have sat down with Ian, Sarg and Matt to run over the game and to be honest it’s more of the same from previous defeats. It was a really poor start as conceding after 20 seconds is unforgivable and gave us a huge uphill battle against a tidy Sevenoaks team. There were lots of chances created yet again and not taken and again that has come back and bitten us. We really need to learn fast that if we do go a goal behind in games we then need to fight hard to stay in the game not go gung ho for a fast equaliser and get caught on the counter. Too many times this season we have been well in games or even on top in games and have gone one down and then conceded quickly thereafter and all of a sudden we find ourselves out of games from a EastGrinsteadTownFC

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES Good afternoon everyone and welcome to East Court for today’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Hythe Town. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our supporters, the Cannons’ players, management supporters and Charman Gary Johnson and his fellow committee members as well as this afternoon’s referee Aaron Conn and his assistants John Pike and Stuart McKenzie. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality. Steven Watt’s Cannons have won four of their last five league matches, the most recent being a 1-0 away win over Ashford United on Boxing Day after having lost their previous match at home 2-0 to Chichester City. They sit in seventh place on 26 points from 14 matches, two points behind Sevenoaks Town with 3 matches in hand and three points behind Sheppey United with 4 games in hand. They won the corresponding fixture at Reachfields, which was the opening match of the season, as well as our FA Cup Preliminary Round tie the following week so Drew Cooney and his team will be looking to make it third time lucky and avenge the two defeats this afternoon.
debuts on Boxing Day. We are currently 13th in the table with 16 points from 15 matches. I would like to thank our all our supporters and all our volunteers for their fantastic support throughout 2023. It would be great to increase the numbers of volunteers this coming year – without their help and enthusiasm, we simply would not have a club. We start 2024 with an away fixture on New Year’s Day at Welling’s Park View Road Stadium against Erith and Belvedere. They are currently just one point outside the relegation zone and are playing Ashford United away this afternoon. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year. Thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home. Enjoy the match Richard

Wasps were chasing the Boxing Day game against Sevenoaks Town from the start having conceded after just some 20 seconds. After a shaky first half, we came back into the game created chances and come mighty close to scoring but were denied by the crossbar and a couple of goal line clearances and ended up losing 3-0. Injuries continue to take their toll, with the likes of skipper Glenn Wilson still missing after being concussed during the Sheppey United match three weeks ago, Omar Folkes injured in the warmup for the same match, Alex Andrade-Filipe longer term, and Max Walsh, Jerson Dos Santos, and Harrison Parker also out injured. earlier., which had been postponed (because of rain). We had played the away match in Chipstead at the end of October and had lost 4-0 – and the programme offers just a few words in remembering it. However rather more space is spent in remembering our two most recent December matches. A 1-1 draw away to Horsham and then another draw, this time at home, 3-3 against Thamesmead. We also get a few photos from that Thamesmead game where we had come back from being 3-1 down with a couple of goals in the last 20 minutes. We have a photo of Marcus Elliott picking the ball out of the Thamesmead net after he had scored our third goal – looking as if he thought there was still time for him to score again. The programme’s flyer gives us a league table updated to include Boxing Day results and showed us 22nd (out of 24) with Chipstead 16th. Jordy Mongoy put us ahead but early in the second half former Wasps player Allan Tait equalised. For a long time it looked as if this might be our third consecutive draw but with five minutes to go Marcus Elliott sealed a 2-1 win. LESTER MEDCALF
The Chips were downed 2-1 seven years ago today
As we come to the end of the year I’m going to look at the programmes for a couple of matches played in the past on 30 December. I’ll start with a Sussex County League division two match Westfield v East Grinstead on Saturday 30 December 2006. If you aren’t sure where Westfield is then it’s more or less in Hastings – so it was a longish trip for us. I made the trip down to Westfield on what was a rather horrible day with heavy rain and a very strong wind blowing straight down the pitch. The Westfield programme didn’t have much to read. However, there were a couple of pieces from their manager and captain looking back at their Boxing Day game away to Seaford – Westfield’s first game for three weeks. That match ended goal-less but extended their unbeaten league and cup run to 11 games. We had also played on Boxing Day – at home to Lingfield – and had lost 1-0. This was our first defeat in 10 games since Steve Norris took over as manager. So, given that recent form, no surprise that the Westfield programme’s league table (updated for Boxing Day results) showed us in third place and Westfield fourth with a couple of games in hand. To the game and the wind and the rain. In my playing days if it was windy and I won the toss I would choose to kick into the wind in the first half. I don’t know who won the toss in Westfield, but we had the wind behind us in the first half. 20 minutes and James Horner gave us the lead and 10 minutes later Ben Burns made it 2. With the last kick of the first half Ben chipped the ball over the keeper but it hit the bar and bounced over. Second half would be hard and for the first 20 minutes we just about held our own. But in the last 25 minutes we conceded five goals – one a penalty which saw Bobby Buckingham sent off (handball) and two goals in the last couple of minutes. Moving on a few years we come to East Grinstead v Chipstead on Saturday 30 December 2017 – though you see from the front cover of the programme that it also covers the match v South Park three days

CLUB NOTICE Supporter Behaviour In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match. Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the fixture against Three Bridges earlier this season foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.
Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA. We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead. As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour.

Old safe hands himself Matte Pierson makes a save
Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.
Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.
