Good evening and, after two postponements, let's hope it's a case of third time lucky and we can get the game on tonight, against a Lancing side who have been the surprise team in the league this season with a very strong possiblity that they can be in the end of season play-offs. Going back to our respective County League days, Lancing must be one of our most frequent opponents in the last 70 years or so. Congratulations to Drew on achieving 100 games as manager and what a way to celebrate as we beat Ashford for the second time this season on Saturday to pick up three much-needed points. The aim now, with three home games in a week, is to build on that excellent result and performance to see if we can climb into the top half of the table. Victory tonight won't improve our position but it will also increase the gap between ourselves and the bottom two, so plenty to play for. COME ON THE WASPS!

MANAGER’S NOTES

Drew Cooney

the start of the season as a team that would spend most of the season in similar positions to ourselves. But fair play to them and their new management team they have put together an excellent squad who clearly believe in what they are doing and work extremely hard in and out of possession. Added to this recently they have added without doubt one of the best No 9s in my opinion at step three or four in Ben Pope they will cause problems as they are proving for everyone in the league. We will have to be at our very best tonight to get something from this game but after Saturday we go into it with a bit more confidence. As ever we thank to all the Santas that made the trip to Ashford on Saturday and look forward to seeing a few more tonight and over the next three games which are all at home.

We welcome everyone back for tonight’s rescheduled fixture against high-flying Lancing. It was only pointed out to me on Sunday by my assistant Ian Nichols that Saturday’s game at Ashford was my 100th game in charge. I’d like to thank everyone at the club for their support over this time and to all the fans and players who I have worked with. More importantly, thanks to Ian, Sarg and Matt who make my life easier and who are always on hand to help and advise when things don’t quite go to plan. I think Ian worked out that during these 100 games we have managed to secure points in just over half of those matches played. For a club like ours that’s a stat we as a management group should be proud of, but as ever we will look to improve. The weekend’s win away at Ashford United was very much needed as we had found ourselves in a real slump in form of late, not helped by several key players missing but nevertheless a really disappointing period. I said to the guys after the game at the weekend that was seven goals we have put past Ashford this season, they would always be looked upon in pre-season as one of the certainties to make the play-offs or automatic promotion. We cannot do that to teams like them and then underperform against the sides in and around us, that’s not fair on us as a management team or as a club! We need more consistency from now till the end of the season. You don’t have to look too far to see what consistency and hard work can achieve, Lancing would have been looked upon at

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES continue. Tonight is the first of three consecutive home matches with Broadbridge Heath our visitors this Saturday and Sittingbourne next Tuesday. We then travel to Chichester the following Saturday 3rd February and are back here again the following Saturday for the first ever visit by Horndean. Thank you all for coming along this evening and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home. Enjoy the match, Richard Tramontin (Chairman)

Good evening everyone and welcome to East Court for tonight’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Lancing. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all Wasps supporters, the Lancing players, management, officials and supporters as well as tonight’s referee Oliver Morris-Sanders and his assistants John-Patrick Kane and Harvey Ransome. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality. David Altendorff’s Lancing are in a great run of form despite Saturday’s defeat at home to unbeaten Cray Valley PM, who they also drew against earlier this month. That loss and draw are the only points the Lancers have dropped in their last eight matches! They currently sit proudly third spot in the League with 41 points from 21 games, which is only two points less than both today’s teams had earned by the end of the 2022/23 season, Today’s two teams played each other four times last season with Drew Cooney’s Wasps winning both league matches and an FA Cup Preliminary Round tie but losing out in the Sussex Senior Cup. Drew will be looking to replicate Saturday’s all-round performance and three points away at Ashford United which we clinched thanks to Matt Daniel’s 48th minute goal. Wasps are currently in 13th place with 23 points from 20 matches which is exactly the same number of points after the same number of matches as last season. Matt Daniel had scored our only goal in the 20th match then as well, which was followed by two home games and two wins so hopefully that sequence will

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST

www.egtfc.co.uk

So moving on a couple of years later we’ll talk about Ringmer v East Grinstead on Saturday 22 January 2011 - in division one of the County League. The Ringmer club notes unfortunately have some bad news. “It’s been a strange week here at Ringmer. We lost £4,000 when someone broke in and stole not only the money but also the safe it was in from behind the bar. Bad guys do win.” The writer goes on to lighten the mood by welcoming us to Ringmer with a question about us - “How many more times do we meet this lot?” This would be the fourth time that we had played Ringmer in the 2010/11 season, with two wins for Ringmer and one for us. The programme’s league table shows us in ninth with Ringmer five places below us. So how did our game go? Richard Sinden gave us the lead. In the second half John-Paul Collier, who had conceded the penalty which made it 1-1, was given a red card but we held on for a point. If you’ve had your memory jogged by any of the above then please contact me on lestermedcalf@btinternet.com.

Cover from our visit to Ringmer back in 2011

With the help of the programmes let’s look back at games played in the past on or about 23 January. We start with East Grinstead v Eastbourne United on Saturday 24 January 2009 in division one of the Sussex County League with a very young Marc Pelling on the front cover of the programme. Steve Norris had recently retired as our manager with Steve Johnson taking over - this would be his first game in charge. On opening up the programme we find the first item to look at is a division one league table - a table that makes pretty hard reading. It tells us that our Eastbourne visitors on that day are second in the table (behind Horsham YMCA). We are also second - but second at the other end of the league table with just Worthing United behind us. Though the programme also reminds us that we had already played the away league match in Eastbourne (at the end of November) with a goal from Liam Bull giving us a 1-0 win, one of only three wins so far. We had actually played the league leaders from Horsham - at East Court - on the previous Tuesday evening. The programme’s match report for that game tells us that 15 seconds after the ref blew his whistle Horsham YMCA scored. We did equalise with a penalty from Mannie Neville and Simon Funnell was to score for us later in the game to pull us back to 3-2 but two late goals gave Horsham YMCA a 5-2 Tuesday evening win. So did we ease our season and begin to climb up the league? We again conceded an early goal - after some 10 minutes - and Eastbourne then scored a second after some 30 minutes. But 5 minutes from half-time a rather needless handball gave us a penalty which Simon Funnell converted. Into the second half with both teams looking to score but it was Eastbourne who increased their lead with 20 minutes left. An immediate response saw Marc Pelling get us back in the game - but unfortunately there were no more goals as we lost 3-2. However, by the end of the 2008/09 season we had done enough to avoid relegation.

CLUB NOTICE Supporter Behaviour In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match. Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the fixture against Three Bridges earlier this season foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.

Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA. We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead. As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour.

Outnumbered: Two take on one against Phoenix Sports.

Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.

Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.

TODAY’s GUESTS

LANCING LANCING - THE LAST FEW YEARS In the 2017/18 season, first team manager Jon Sharman, assisted by Nigel Geary and Malcolm Saunders, led the Lancers to 10th place in the Southern Combination Premier League. At the end of the season, chairman Jon Rea resigned from his role, in addition to Sharman and Geary. For the 2018/19 season, Steve Taylor was elected chairman and was joined by Daniel Fuller-Smith as secretary, whilst Barry Sutton was promoted to the role of vice-chairman. With four new teams – Ladies, two Under-18 squads and a Veterans side – joining the existing First Team and Under-23s, the club gained FA Charter Standard Community status in February 2019. Unfortunately Ash Bailey was forced to retire from his post as manager in September for family commitments, and was replaced by Mark Pulling who led the team to 13th in the final SCFL Premier Division table. During the season, the club launched a new mental health initiative, named the ‘You’re Not In This Alone’ campaign, through offering free entry to supporters with mental health issues, raising over £400 for Mind Lancing, supporting the Time to Talk Day in February 2019 and raising over £1,000 for CALM – The Campaign Against Living Miserably. In addition, Lancing supported the Fairtrade Foundation through the purchasing of Fairtrade-certified footballs for the new Ladies squad. The club came runners-up in the Active Sussex ‘Club of the Year’ category in November 2018. In February 2019 the club was saddened to hear about the passing of long-serving committee member, Michael Clark, who managed the 100 Club, manned the turnstile and supported the club in the later years of his life. In the 2019/20 season, the club introduced a

12

www.egtfc.co.uk

new Disability team, and appointed a new management team consisting of Naim Rouane, David Altendorff and Kane Louis for the season. The first team had an excellent campaign, the best in the club’s history, however the season was brought to a premature end following the Covid-19 outbreak. The Lancers were top of the league looking to be promoted but with the season voided by the FA they were left to compete in the SCFL for another season. Ahead of the 2020/21 season, Kane Louis and James Rhodes were appointed Joint Managers of the first team following the departure of Rouane and Altendorff. James and Kane kept the existing backroom staff of Matt Evans, Mark Stuart, Lloyd Osland and Georgina Hill. Following a second curtailed season due to Covid-19, and thanks to FA restructuring, Lancing were promoted to the Pitching In Isthmian League South East Division after finishing top on points per game in the SCFL Premier Division over the course of two seasons. This movement from Step 5 to Step 4 in the English pyramid marked a huge achievement for the club, in what was appropriately also their 80th anniversary. Altendorff returned to the manager's role this season after former Brighton and Crawley player Dean Cox had a spell in charge last season.
