Good evening and a warm welcome to everyone who has made the trip up from Lancing. I'm not sure quite how many times our clubs have met over the years but if it's not more than a hundred I'd be surprised. In fact we were in action against each other 25 years ago on this very day down at Culver Road in the County League - a seven-goal thriller that was (as you can read in Programmes From The Past). I wasn't at Three Bridges on Saturday but speaking to Drew on Monday it appeared an injury-hit squad acquited themselves pretty well against free-scoring opposition. We could certainly do with some better luck on the injury front at the moment but this is the first of three home games before 2023 is ushered out and it's important we take advantage. Happy Christmas to all our readers and we look forward to seeing you here on Boxing Day against Sevenoaks. FRONT COVER: Jerson Dos Santos in action during the recent win over Merstham. MANAGER’S NOTES We welcome everyone back for tonight's home game against Lancing. They have had a really good start to the season under their new management team and new-look squad. A couple of familiar faces in their squad will be making their return to East Court today and it will be interesting to see how the game pans out. We go into tonight's match with quite a few injury concerns. Our captain Glenn Wilson is still out after suffering a concussion at Shepped United a couple of weeks ago. We lost Omar Folkes when he rolled his ankle in the warm-up in the same game and we're also without Michael Wilson and Max Walsh as well at the moment. That's a lot of experience that we could do with but as always we will not use it as an excuse. We have been working hard to add to the squad in the last couple of weeks and I'd like to welcome Jhon Murillo-Castillo and Adonai Dacruz, who both made their debut on Saturday at Three Bridges.

Drew Cooney

Anyway, it's done and we must focus on tonight, the first of three home games over Christmas. It's unlikely we'll have too many of our players fit for this evening but hopefully things will be better for the Sevenoaks game on Boxing Day. May I finish by making an appeal to anyone who has the necessary training and experience and wants to join the backroom team as physio to get in touch. It's a position in our set-up we're urgently looking to fill. Finally, as this is the last home game before Christmas I'd like to wish everyone associated the club a Happy Christmas and we look forward to your support tonight and on Boxing Day against Sevenoaks. Good luck to us - Drew.

As many of you will have seen, we lost that game 4-2 but I was pretty pleased with the overall performance against a side who have scored a lot of goals this season. That was where the main difference between the teams was; in the rest of the pitch I felt we matched them. But our habit of conceding avoidable goals was evident again, although I didn't agree with the referee's decision to award them a penalty and when Matt Daniel got clean through late on and was brought down we missed the chance to make it 4-3, which would have made the closing stages interesting, and they potentially could have been down to ten men at the same time.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES Good evening everyone and welcome to East Court for tonight’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Lancing, which will be our last match before Christmas. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all Wasps supporters, the Lancing players, management, officials and supporters as well as today’s referee David Spain and his assistants Robert King and Thomas Murray. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality. David Altendorff’s Lancing lost their first game on Saturday after a run of five unbeaten during which they won four. Saturday’s defeat was against Sheppey United after the Lancers went in at half time one up but conceded twice in the second half. They are ninth in the League with 22 points from 14 matches, six more points than Wasps who are in 13th place after the same number of games.

been our physio over the last few seasons and is now involved full-time with a Premier League club. We wish him all the best but his progression has of course meant that we are left without a physio. If anyone is interested in stepping in, please do get in touch. We are back here on Boxing Day (ko 3pm) when we host Sevenoaks Town and then again on 30 December against Hythe Town. We start 2024 with an away fixture on New Year’s Day at Erith and Belvedere. I would like to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you and your families a Merry Christmas. Thank you all for coming along this evening and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home. Enjoy the match Richard Tramontin (Chairman)

Today’s two teams played each other four times last season with Drew Cooney’s Wasps winning both league matches and an FA Cup Preliminary Round tie but lost out in the Sussex Senior Cup The Lancers could well have two ex-Wasps in today’s line up in Jack Meeres and Andrew Briggs, who was one of the East Grinstead scorers last year in our 2-0 league home win. Photo courtesy of Stuart Gibson

Injuries and suspensions have taken their toll in the last couple of matches, but Connor Tighe is available after suspension as is Michael Wilson, who missed Saturday’s match at Three Bridges. Glenn Wilson will not be available as he continues his recovery from the head injury he sustained at Sheppey which needed hospital treatment. next home game is scheduled for the first Saturday in February with six consecutive away games before then. His notes also remind us that we had played our away league match in Hailsham in September - when we had won 3-1. But the match had also seen a bad injury to our Kris Trevor. “Only the quick thinking of our own staff and the Hailsham officials prevented a tragedy.” So, our sincere thanks to Hailsham. Kris had not yet re-started playing. But one of those six away games in January was a cup match away to Hailsham and this would see Kris returning. He came on as a sub and scored two goals in our 3-1 win. We have a match report from our match on the previous Saturday at home to Sidlesham which saw two red cards for Sidlesham and one for us (Kevin Wright). We had video evidence that Kevin should not have been sent off and we would make a protest. Anyway, we welcomed Christmas with a thumping 5-1 win thanks to two goals from Steve Banks and one each from Dave Gellatly, Adam Simpson and Phil Thompson. Lester Medcalf

Cover for our programme at Lancing 25 years ago

With the help of the programmes let’s look back at games played in the past on or about 19 December. And one of the games just happens to be exactly 25 years ago against our 2023 opponents this evening. Lancing v East Grinstead on Saturday 19 December 1998 in division two of the County League. The programme is a very busy one which would have needed a good couple of hours to read. We get an early welcome in the programme with an interesting reminder. Lancing had been elected to the County League in 1948 (some 50 years before the 1998 game) and guess who their first ever game was against? It was against us - and we obviously did the decent thing in 1948 by losing the match 7-4! We also get a couple of early pages full of statistics – one of which tells us that in our 10 most recent games we had won just two and lost the other eight. The programme’s league table shows us in 13th place out of the 18 teams in the league – only one point from our six away games not helping – while Lancing were eighth. One of the programme’s features that caught my eye was that Lancing had reached the season 1954/55 in their history. They had a difficult season and a list of their results included a 7-6 defeat. And we gain another mention as we played them in their last match of that 54/55 season – a 1-1 draw gave Lancing the one point they needed to avoid relegation. (We finished third that season – in our home match we had beaten Lancing 5-3.) So what happened in December 1998? First thing is that my son Daniel played for us while Richard Tramontin’s son Marc was one of the subs – I don’t know if he was called upon. Goals from Keith Bradshaw, Nick Flint and John Richardson had put us 2-0 and then 3-2 up - and it was still 3-2 with a couple of minutes to go. But somehow, we lost 4-3! Five years later we have East Grinstead v Hailsham on Saturday 20 December 2003 in the top division of the County League. Bruce Talbot’s club notes start by telling us that our

CLUB NOTICE Supporter Behaviour In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match. Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the fixture against Three Bridges earlier this season foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.

Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA. We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead. As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour.

Jerson dos Santos scores in the 4-1 win over Merstham,

Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.

Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.

TODAY’s GUEsTs

LANCING LANCING - THE LAST FEW YEARS In the 2017/18 season, first team manager Jon Sharman, assisted by Nigel Geary and Malcolm Saunders, led the Lancers to 10th place in the Southern Combination Premier League. At the end of the season, chairman Jon Rea resigned from his role, in addition to Sharman and Geary. For the 2018/19 season, Steve Taylor was elected chairman and was joined by Daniel Fuller-Smith as secretary, whilst Barry Sutton was promoted to the role of vice-chairman. With four new teams – Ladies, two Under-18 squads and a Veterans side – joining the existing First Team and Under-23s, the club gained FA Charter Standard Community status in February 2019. Unfortunately Ash Bailey was forced to retire from his post as manager in September for family commitments, and was replaced by Mark Pulling who led the team to 13th in the final SCFL Premier Division table. During the season, the club launched a new mental health initiative, named the ‘You’re Not In This Alone’ campaign, through offering free entry to supporters with mental health issues, raising over £400 for Mind Lancing, supporting the Time to Talk Day in February 2019 and raising over £1,000 for CALM – The Campaign Against Living Miserably. In addition, Lancing supported the Fairtrade Foundation through the purchasing of Fairtrade-certified footballs for the new Ladies squad. The club came runners-up in the Active Sussex ‘Club of the Year’ category in November 2018. In February 2019 the club was saddened to hear about the passing of long-serving committee member, Michael Clark, who managed the 100 Club, manned the turnstile and supported the club in the later years of his life. In the 2019/20 season, the club introduced a

12

www.egtfc.co.uk

new Disability team, and appointed a new management team consisting of Naim Rouane, David Altendorff and Kane Louis for the season. The first team had an excellent campaign, the best in the club’s history, however the season was brought to a premature end following the Covid-19 outbreak. The Lancers were top of the league looking to be promoted but with the season voided by the FA they were left to compete in the SCFL for another season. Ahead of the 2020/21 season, Kane Louis and James Rhodes were appointed Joint Managers of the first team following the departure of Rouane and Altendorff. James and Kane kept the existing backroom staff of Matt Evans, Mark Stuart, Lloyd Osland and Georgina Hill. Following a second curtailed season due to Covid-19, and thanks to FA restructuring, Lancing were promoted to the Pitching In Isthmian League South East Division after finishing top on points per game in the SCFL Premier Division over the course of two seasons. This movement from Step 5 to Step 4 in the English pyramid marked a huge achievement for the club, in what was appropriately also their 80th anniversary. Altendorff returned to the manager's role this season after former Brighton and Crawley player Dean Cox had a spell in charge last season.
