Hopefully it's a case of fourth time lucky tonight as we welcome Lancing to East Court after three previous attempts - one in each of the last three months - to play the fixture. One of our oldest rivals stretching back to postWar days, it's an important game for different reasons. Well that hoary old football adage that a game a few days later after a heavy defeat will no doubt be used tonight. We've had some bad days in Step 4 in recent years and Saturday at Chi was right up there. But our players and management have often reacted well to adversity and I guess they will need to do so again tonight! The bottom of the table is tightening up with teams like Broadbridge Heath and Horndean making a move. There's still a comforting gap to the bottom two for us, but we don't want it to get any narrower. Over to you lads... COME ON YOU WASPS!

MANAGER’S NOTES

Drew Cooney

Evening all and hopefully it’s fourth time lucky after three postponements against our visitors Lancing. Firstly, I want to apologies on behalf of the players for the performance they put in down at Chichester on Saturday. It was without doubt my lowest point in management and hopefully something that I will never have to go through again. Bizarrely we were very well prepared with everyone on time and a good warm up. But the game couldn’t have got off to a worse start with the mistake by Matt at the back after what must have been 45 seconds! From there onwards was just one mistake after another. Sometimes in life you just know it is going to be a horrible day and this certainly was. What was more worrying for me, though, was how different a performance we got compared to last Tuesday’s home game against Sittingbourne. I have questioned the group before about our ability to perform back to back and yet again I am questioning that. This week will be a decisive one for several of the group. We will make some changes as we have to after a result like that. This may mean a few of our youngsters getting more game time, which they deserve. It may also be through some departures and arrivals. It’s a hard one, as after a result like Saturday you massively question everything you are doing. I had a few reassuring messages from previous managers who have been through results like that which I must admit helped. I am confident we have a group that can compete on the football pitch, but they now need to prove mentally they have

the right mindset too. There is no hiding from the fact we hugely miss Glenn Wilson and Tom Cadman and adding to that we had Kiye suspended and Max carrying a niggle. But as a group we must, and we will, be better. For all the travelling fans who went to Chichester the players have given up their matchday expenses and this will go towards the cost of all of your travel and entry. As ever we thank you for your support and please stick with us.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES Good evening everyone and welcome to East Court for tonight’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Lancing. This is the fourth attempt at staging this match, which has previously succumbed to the weather conditions.

was a lost cause.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all Wasps supporters, the Lancing players, management, officials and supporters as well as tonight’s referee Oliver MorrisSanders and his assistants John-Patrick Kane and Harvey Ransome. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality.

We are back here again at East Court on Saturday for the first ever visit by Horndean who are at home to Broadbridge Heath tonight and we then travel to Cray Valley PM the following Saturday.

David Altendorff’s Lancing have been in a great run of form of late despite two recent home defeats to unbeaten Cray Valley PM and Herne Bay on Saturday. Those two losses and a draw away at Cray Valley last month are the only points the Lancers have dropped in their last ten matches! They currently sit proudly in fourth place in the League with 44 points from 24 games, which is one more point than they had at the end of the 2022/23 season.

I’m sure Drew and his team will put that last match out of everyone’s minds and be focussed on tonight’s task of getting all three points.

Thank you all for coming along this evening and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home. Enjoy the match, Richard Tramontin (Chairman)

We are currently in 15th place with 24 points from 23 matches. Following a win, two draws and a narrow defeat in the previous four outings, the wheels fell off on Saturday at Chichester City on their new 3G pitch. We never really recovered from conceding in the first two minutes and were then not helped by decisions that didn’t go our way for the next three goals including a clear offside goal, and we subsequently went in 4-0 down at half time. PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST

10

www.egtfc.co.uk

So moving on a couple of years later we’ll talk about Ringmer v East Grinstead on Saturday 22 January 2011 - in division one of the County League. The Ringmer club notes unfortunately have some bad news. “It’s been a strange week here at Ringmer. We lost £4,000 when someone broke in and stole not only the money but also the safe it was in from behind the bar. Bad guys do win.” The writer goes on to lighten the mood by welcoming us to Ringmer with a question about us - “How many more times do we meet this lot?” This would be the fourth time that we had played Ringmer in the 2010/11 season, with two wins for Ringmer and one for us. The programme’s league table shows us in ninth with Ringmer five places below us. So how did our game go? Richard Sinden gave us the lead. In the second half John-Paul Collier, who had conceded the penalty which made it 1-1, was given a red card but we held on for a point. If you’ve had your memory jogged by any of the above then please contact me on lestermedcalf@btinternet.com.

Cover from our visit to Ringmer back in 2011

With the help of the programmes let’s look back at games played in the past on or about 23 January. We start with East Grinstead v Eastbourne United on Saturday 24 January 2009 in division one of the Sussex County League with a very young Marc Pelling on the front cover of the programme. Steve Norris had recently retired as our manager with Steve Johnson taking over - this would be his first game in charge. On opening up the programme we find the first item to look at is a division one league table - a table that makes pretty hard reading. It tells us that our Eastbourne visitors on that day are second in the table (behind Horsham YMCA). We are also second - but second at the other end of the league table with just Worthing United behind us. Though the programme also reminds us that we had already played the away league match in Eastbourne (at the end of November) with a goal from Liam Bull giving us a 1-0 win, one of only three wins so far. We had actually played the league leaders from Horsham - at East Court - on the previous Tuesday evening. The programme’s match report for that game tells us that 15 seconds after the ref blew his whistle Horsham YMCA scored. We did equalise with a penalty from Mannie Neville and Simon Funnell was to score for us later in the game to pull us back to 3-2 but two late goals gave Horsham YMCA a 5-2 Tuesday evening win. So did we ease our season and begin to climb up the league? We again conceded an early goal - after some 10 minutes - and Eastbourne then scored a second after some 30 minutes. But 5 minutes from half-time a rather needless handball gave us a penalty which Simon Funnell converted. Into the second half with both teams looking to score but it was Eastbourne who increased their lead with 20 minutes left. An immediate response saw Marc Pelling get us back in the game - but unfortunately there were no more goals as we lost 3-2. However, by the end of the 2008/09 season we had done enough to avoid relegation.

CLUB NOTICE Supporter Behaviour In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match. Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the fixture against Three Bridges earlier this season foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.

Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA. We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead. As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour.

www.egtfc.co.uk

EastGrinsteadTownFC

Harrison Parker puts us in front against Sittingbourne

Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.

Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.

TODAY’s GUEsTs

LANCING LANCING - THE LAST FEW YEARS In the 2017/18 season, first team manager Jon Sharman, assisted by Nigel Geary and Malcolm Saunders, led the Lancers to 10th place in the Southern Combination Premier League. At the end of the season, chairman Jon Rea resigned from his role, in addition to Sharman and Geary. For the 2018/19 season, Steve Taylor was elected chairman and was joined by Daniel Fuller-Smith as secretary, whilst Barry Sutton was promoted to the role of vice-chairman. With four new teams – Ladies, two Under-18 squads and a Veterans side – joining the existing First Team and Under-23s, the club gained FA Charter Standard Community status in February 2019. Unfortunately Ash Bailey was forced to retire from his post as manager in September for family commitments, and was replaced by Mark Pulling who led the team to 13th in the final SCFL Premier Division table. During the season, the club launched a new mental health initiative, named the ‘You’re Not In This Alone’ campaign, through offering free entry to supporters with mental health issues, raising over £400 for Mind Lancing, supporting the Time to Talk Day in February 2019 and raising over £1,000 for CALM – The Campaign Against Living Miserably. In addition, Lancing supported the Fairtrade Foundation through the purchasing of Fairtrade-certified footballs for the new Ladies squad. The club came runners-up in the Active Sussex ‘Club of the Year’ category in November 2018. In February 2019 the club was saddened to hear about the passing of long-serving committee member, Michael Clark, who managed the 100 Club, manned the turnstile and supported the club in the later years of his life. In the 2019/20 season, the club introduced a

12

www.egtfc.co.uk

new Disability team, and appointed a new management team consisting of Naim Rouane, David Altendorff and Kane Louis for the season. The first team had an excellent campaign, the best in the club’s history, however the season was brought to a premature end following the Covid-19 outbreak. The Lancers were top of the league looking to be promoted but with the season voided by the FA they were left to compete in the SCFL for another season. Ahead of the 2020/21 season, Kane Louis and James Rhodes were appointed Joint Managers of the first team following the departure of Rouane and Altendorff. James and Kane kept the existing backroom staff of Matt Evans, Mark Stuart, Lloyd Osland and Georgina Hill. Following a second curtailed season due to Covid-19, and thanks to FA restructuring, Lancing were promoted to the Pitching In Isthmian League South East Division after finishing top on points per game in the SCFL Premier Division over the course of two seasons. This movement from Step 5 to Step 4 in the English pyramid marked a huge achievement for the club, in what was appropriately also their 80th anniversary. Altendorff returned to the manager's role this season after former Brighton and Crawley player Dean Cox had a spell in charge last season.
