Good afternoon and a warm welcome to everyone who has made the trip up from Lancing. I'm not sure quite how many times our clubs have met over the years but if it's not more than a hundred I'd be surprised. A good win last Saturday at Littlehampton erased the memory of a very poor display - certainly in the first half - against Eastbourne United in the Sussex Senior Cup a few days earlier. Maybe we shouldn't have been that surprised how good United were. They had beaten Lancing in the second round and last Saturday they lost 1-0 at home to Steyning, who on Wednesday knocked Brighton U21s out with a 3-1 win. Maybe the standard, certainly at the top end, of Step 5 is not as bad as a lot of people thought it was. Anyway, as I type this it's a lovely sunny Autumn morning but more rain is due to sweep in on Saturday, a pretty regular occurance in recent weeks. Let's hope we can get the game played and tuck away three more points. Come on the Wasps! Front cover: Matte Pierson comes through traffic to claim a cross at Littlehampton last Saturday. MANAGER’S NOTES We welcome everyone back for today's home game against Lancing. They have had a really good start to the season under their new management team and new-look squad. A couple of familiar faces in their squad will be making their return to East Court today and it will be interesting to see how the game pans out. We had a great result on the road last week at Littlehampton. It's always very difficult to get anything when you go down there so to come away with all three points was really positive. All in all I thought we more than warranted the three points, dominating possession in both halves so that it was only really the last 15 minutes that they caused us any problems. We had to see the game out with 10 men after Jenson dos Santos suffered a muscle pull and couldn’t move up front and we had made all our changes.

with a couple out the door and hopefully a few in the door. Ben Aubery and Kie Douglas have left the club and I wish them both well for the rest of the season. Matt Daniels is nearing a first-team return and has featured for the under-23s this week. So his return will be like a new signing and will hopefully bring instant goals. We have also had a couple of players come up from the 23s in Zack and Jasper. They are sure to feature regularly now moving forward and have both really impressed. Hopefully we can get another good run of 4-5 games unbeaten together again now which will see us quietly move up the table. As ever we thank all our fans for their support both home and away.
Good luck to us - Drew

There was a proper captain's performance on the day from goalscoring Glenn Wilson, who netted a double. I thought he was outstanding on the day and has been since the start of the season. I said to the boys in the dressing room they really do need to appreciate what a great captain they have and they should make the most of him whilst we are still lucky to have him. As they say, he is like a fine wine at the moment and seems to be getting better with age - long may that continue! We have had a busy week off the pitch, www.egtfc.co.uk

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES previous round. As a consequence, our rearranged fixture away at Ramsgate which had been scheduled for Wednesday 29th November has been postponed and has now been rescheduled to Wednesday 10 th January. Wasps are away next Saturday at Beckenham Town and then back here at East Court the following Saturday when we host Merstham. Unfortunately our Under 23s quarter final tie in the Sussex Under-23s Challenge Cup at Broadbridge Heath on Thursday was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. A new date will be announced soon, but they are scheduled to travel to Tooting & Mitcham Utd on Monday in the Suburban League and then have a home fixture here on Thursday 30 th November when they host Godalming Town. The next football here will be this coming Thursday when our Under 18s play Kingstonian in the Isthmian Youth Central League (ko 7.30pm). Thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home. Enjoy the match, Richard.

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to East Court for this afternoon’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Lancing. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all Wasps supporters, the Lancing players, management, officials and supporters as well as today’s referee Zak Demetriades and his assistants Patrick Jolliffe and Darren Eaton and observer Graeme Ions. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality. David Altendorff’s Lancing have won three of their last four matches including a 4-0 defeat of Three Bridges three weeks ago which ended their unbeaten run. The Lancers are in eighth spot in the League with 15 points from 10 matches, two more points than Wasps who are in twelfth place after the same number of games. Lancing’s last match was a 2-0 home win against Broadbridge Heath last Saturday. Today’s two teams played each other four times last season with Drew Cooney’s Wasps winning both league matches and an FA Cup Preliminary Round tie but losing out in the Sussex Senior Cup. The Lancers could well have two ex-Wasps in today’s line up in Jack Meeres and Andrew Briggs, who was one of the East Grinstead scorers last year in our 2-0 league home win. Wasps last match was an impressive 2-1 win away to Littlehampton Town with both our goals coming from captain Glenn Wilson, the opener a fierce volley from outside the box followed by an assured spot kick soon after the hosts had levelled the score. I must take this opportunity to congratulate both Horsham and Cray Valley PM on their superb FA Cup runs which ended on Tuesday and Wednesday with live televised replays at home against League One sides Barnsley and Charlton Athletic respectively in the First Round proper of the competition. Same goes for Sheppey United who were knocked out by Walsall in the same round. They all did themselves, non-league football and the Isthmian League proud. Ramsgate have gone at least one stage better. The Rams are still proudly flying the Isthmian League flag and have earned a trip to AFC Wimbledon on Monday 4 th December in the second round having beaten Woking in the

game on the previous Tuesday evening down in Shoreham (who were bottom of the league with us third from bottom). We won that match 4-2, and perhaps if we hadn’t won it, then the match report might have been tucked away somewhere else in the programme? Manager Matt Longhurst and Chairman Richard Tramontin tell us how welcome that Shoreham win was – coming after four consecutive defeats – as well as telling us how strong Cray were – just one league defeat though lots of draws to keep them off the top of the league. Michael Phillips contributes an article, surrounded by match photos, talking about “our intrepid band of fans” and how much they appreciate the work done by those involved in running the club. So could anything go wrong with the visitors from Cray? Not much to say because we were beaten 7-0. The programme for our next home match simply referred to the game as “a mauling”. If you’ve had your memory jogged by any of the above then please contact me on lestermedcalf@btinternet.com.
Phil Thompson on the cover against Peacehaven in 2006
With the help of the programmes we produced let’s look back at games played in the past on today’s date. First up we have East Grinstead v Peacehaven on Saturday 18 November 2006 in Division Two of the County League. Bruce Talbot’s notes start by telling us that our visitors had played at Lingfield on the Tuesday four days before we were playing them and maybe a few of our supporters had gone to see them. Team manager Steve Norris had now been in charge for six weeks and had taken us to the top of the league – albeit having played a couple of games more than many other teams. We had won four and drawn two of our most recent league matches and we have a match report from our most recent 3-0 win on the previous Saturday against Broadbridge Heath. Chairman Richard Tramontin’s notes could rightly be called a “View from the top” with a new buzz round the club. He was pleased to see that one or two former players had come back to the club with Adam Dart marking his return with a goal in that Broadbridge Heath win. Richard also thanks all those who had helped at our recent Fireworks display – some 3,000 coming to watch. The visitors from Peacehaven were one of the clubs chasing us. So did we take advantage of being at home and make it seven unbeaten matches? After some 25 minutes we opened the scoring with a goal from our 2023 manager Drew Cooney. Things were very tight and with some five minutes to go there was a brawl which resulted in Drew being sent off together with two Peacehaven players. But right at the end Ben Burns made it safe for us with our second goal. It was also our third game without conceding a goal. In writing pieces about games from the past the writer might be tempted, if there is a choice, to talk about matches where your team did well. So what about East Grinstead v Cray Wanderers on Saturday 18 November 2017 in the Isthmian League of course? The opening article in the programme is, somewhat unusually, a match report of our

CLUB NOTICE Supporter Behaviour In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match. Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the recent fixture against Three Bridges foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.
Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA. We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead. As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour. Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.

Delight for Glenn Wilson and our fans after his goal last week.
Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.

TODAY’s GUEsTs
LANCING LANCING - THE LAST FEW YEARS In the 2017/18 season, first team manager Jon Sharman, assisted by Nigel Geary and Malcolm Saunders, led the Lancers to 10th place in the Southern Combination Premier League. At the end of the season, chairman Jon Rea resigned from his role, in addition to Sharman and Geary. For the 2018/19 season, Steve Taylor was elected chairman and was joined by Daniel Fuller-Smith as secretary, whilst Barry Sutton was promoted to the role of vice-chairman. With four new teams – Ladies, two Under-18 squads and a Veterans side – joining the existing First Team and Under-23s, the club gained FA Charter Standard Community status in February 2019. Unfortunately Ash Bailey was forced to retire from his post as manager in September for family commitments, and was replaced by Mark Pulling who led the team to 13th in the final SCFL Premier Division table. During the season, the club launched a new mental health initiative, named the ‘You’re Not In This Alone’ campaign, through offering free entry to supporters with mental health issues, raising over £400 for Mind Lancing, supporting the Time to Talk Day in February 2019 and raising over £1,000 for CALM – The Campaign Against Living Miserably. In addition, Lancing supported the Fairtrade Foundation through the purchasing of Fairtrade-certified footballs for the new Ladies squad. The club came runners-up in the Active Sussex ‘Club of the Year’ category in November 2018. In February 2019 the club was saddened to hear about the passing of long-serving committee member, Michael Clark, who managed the 100 Club, manned the turnstile and supported the club in the later years of his life. In the 2019/20 season, the club introduced a
12

new Disability team, and appointed a new management team consisting of Naim Rouane, David Altendorff and Kane Louis for the season. The first team had an excellent campaign, the best in the club’s history, however the season was brought to a premature end following the Covid-19 outbreak. The Lancers were top of the league looking to be promoted but with the season voided by the FA they were left to compete in the SCFL for another season. Ahead of the 2020/21 season, Kane Louis and James Rhodes were appointed Joint Managers of the first team following the departure of Rouane and Altendorff. James and Kane kept the existing backroom staff of Matt Evans, Mark Stuart, Lloyd Osland and Georgina Hill. Following a second curtailed season due to Covid-19, and thanks to FA restructuring, Lancing were promoted to the Pitching In Isthmian League South East Division after finishing top on points per game in the SCFL Premier Division over the course of two seasons. This movement from Step 5 to Step 4 in the English pyramid marked a huge achievement for the club, in what was appropriately also their 80th anniversary. Altendorff returned to the manager's role this season after former Brighton and Crawley player Dean Cox had a spell in charge last season.
