there's an opportunity to put a slightly lacklustre September behind us and
to see that Beckenham, whom we came so close to knocking out, have gone on to beat both Dartford and Binfield to reach the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup. They can look forward to facing Dagenham & Redbridge, of the National League, next week.
are also due to Sevenoaks, who will be away to Ebbsfleet. It reflects well on the strength of our league.

Good afternoon and a warm welcome back to the OHOB Community Stadium for today’s game against Lancing. Although we had a good result down there in the FA Cup a few weeks back I don’t think that will have too much bearing on what happens over the next 90 minutes.
We’re already seeing this season just how competitive this division is and how you have to work hard to earn any points. Today will be no different. Our last two games against Sheppey and Burgess Hill proved that. Neither had won beforehand but two closely fought matches ended in us on the wrong end of a 1-0 defeat.
Against Sheppey we looked a bit flat for the first hour and struggled to impose ourselves in the final third. I knew their league position was false and to be honest we were fortunate to still be in the game, given the chances they created. But we pride ourselves on our organisation and even when you’re not playing that well collectively, if you can stay in a game you always have a chance. Ours came right at the end when we hit the post. Those are the fine margins I think we’ll see a lot of as the season continues and it’s up to us to be on the right side of the ledger in as many tight games as we can.
It was the same at Burgess Hill last Saturday. I felt this was a lot more even and we had some chances, especially in the first half. Again, we conceded the only goal from a set piece and couldn’t quite find that bit of quality to get an equaliser. We’re entering a busy period of the season with two successive Tuesday
night games coming up at Three Bridges and then at home to Leatherhead in the Velocity Cup. It will take a fair bit of the players and we’ll look to utilise the full squad over the next fortnight but I have every confidence the lads will rise to the challenge. After a good start to the season we have the opportunity today in front of our own supporters to get back on track.
On behalf of Ian and Sarg and the lads, thanks again for your support and make sure you get behind the boys today. Good luck to us! Drew.
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The OHOB Community Stadium for today’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Lancing.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to the travelling players, management, officials and supporters from Lancing and I trust you enjoy your brief stay and our hospitality. A special welcome as well to today’s referee Michael Scott and his assistants Simon Faires and John-Patrick Kane.
Today’s teams last met in August at Culver Road in the FA Cup Preliminary Round in which Wasps came away with an impressive 4-1 win and progressed to the 1st Round Qualifying, losing to Beckenham Town in a replay.
Our last two league matches have been tight affairs where we have come out of both on the wrong side of 1-0 scorelines - firstly at home against Sheppey United and last Saturday at Burgess Hill, with ironically, both opponents recording their first league wins of the season. We are currently 13th in the league with seven points from six matches. Our performances in those last couple of matches have been disappointedly flat and Drew will be looking for a reaction from his team this afternoon and aiming for a repeat of the FA Cup performance at Lancing.
Alex Walsh and Dale Hurley’s Lancing team are currently two places below Wasps with six points from seven matches, their last being a 1-1 draw against Cray Valley at home last Saturday which followed a 0-0 draw against Whitehawk.
Wasps make a short trip on Tuesday night to Three Bridges (ko 7.45pm) and are back here next Saturday against Ramsgate (ko 3pm). We are home again the following Tuesday (18th October) against Leatherhead in the Velocity Cup (7.30pm).
We are proud to be again hosting the annual Adam Dabell Memorial Match here on Thursday next week (13th October, ko 7pm) which sees the town’s two sixth forms, Sackville and Imberhorne, compete for the Adam Dabell Memorial Cup and Trophy. In March 2004, Adam, tragically and without any warning, collapsed and died whilst playing in a local five-a-side tournament with his friends. The match is a celebration of Adam’s life. Entry is free and we again join Adam’s family and friends in looking to promote and seek entirely voluntary contributions to CRY - Cardiac Risk in the Young.
I would like to thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to The OHOB Community Stadium and I wish you all a safe journey home.

I’m looking back quite a few years for the first programme for games played in past on today’s date - a Sussex County League division 2 match East Grinstead v Crowborough on Tuesday 8 October 1996 played of course under our floodlights.
The club notes welcoming our visitors suggest that it “certainly seems strange not to be playing host to Crowborough on Boxing Day“ –or on some other Bank Holiday.
I’ve always rather felt that Crowborough is somewhat isolated from other Sussex clubs and that we are certainly the nearest club to them. And in the recent past, after a short spell in the Isthmian League, they did spend a number of years in what was essentially the Kent League, though they have returned this season to the mainly Sussex League.
Our recent form was not that great with the recent 2-0 defeat away to Midhurst perhaps not coming as a huge surprise as our best result down there in the last 5 games was a draw in 1982 ! Though the performance was, so we are told, a big improvement on our home defeat the week before against Bexhill. The programme’s match reports don’t make good reading.
I can’t remember if I saw the match which turned out to be rather a good one - though a match report tells us that “things got a bit heated in the last 20 minutes when both sides were going hammer and tongs for the winner.”
A number of players were booked.
Jim Fenton got us in front after 20 minutes with Mark Gilham levelling things up 10 minutes later. Another 10 minutes and John Ronaldson but the visitors ahead. A quick response early in the second half saw Doug Cashman levelling things up again.
Then with 10 minutes to go Tony Wright put Crowborough in front again before Doug
Cashman again levelled things up five minutes later – and 3-3 it finished. Sounds good to me.
A few years later – and a game I remember going to see – we have a trip to the Sussex coast for Saltdean v East Grinstead on Saturday 8 October 2005 in division 2 of the County League.
An attractive red cover with the kick-off time altered to show it as midday. The club notes explain why we’re starting early – England are playing Austria that afternoon in a World Cup qualifier at Old Trafford and the match is being televised.
Those club notes welcome us, talk about Saltdean’s recent games and take a look forward to an FA Youth Cup match at home to Gravesend - but otherwise there’s not that much to read.
There is a page with three jokes on it, but they didn’t make me laugh and so I won’t repeat them. We do get a list of Saltdean’s results (which include a 3-1 win for us in a pre-season friendly) but we aren’t told who played for Saltdean or who scored their goals in their various league matches.
We do have a league table though it is three weeks old with a number of errors. We are shown as having played five games with one win, one defeat and no draws! Perhaps even worse St Francis are shown as second in the table with 13 points.
They’ve played 6 games but are shown to have no wins, no draws and no defeats!
The game provided us with just one goal which fortunately came our way with Simon Tadman scoring shortly into the second half - I think it was a header that hit the underside of the bar on its way in. (And 1-0 was also the score in England’s match with Frank Lampard scoring from a penalty. David Beckham was sent off after about an hour.)
If you’ve had your memory jogged by any of the above then please contact me on lestermedcalf@btinternet.com.
In the 2017/18 season, first team manager Jon Sharman, assisted by Nigel Geary and Malcolm Saunders, led the Lancers to 10th place in the Southern Combination Premier League. At the end of the season, chairman Jon Rea resigned from his role, in addition to Sharman and Geary.
For the 2018/19 season, Steve Taylor was elected chairman and was joined by Daniel Fuller-Smith as secretary, whilst Barry Sutton was promoted to the role of vice-chairman. With four new teams – Ladies, two Under-18 squads and a Veterans side – joining the existing First Team and Under-23s, the club gained FA Charter Standard Community status in February 2019.
Unfortunately Ash Bailey was forced to retire from his post as manager in September for family commitments, and was replaced by Mark Pulling who led the team to 13th in the final SCFL Premier Division table.
During the season, the club launched a new mental health initiative, named the ‘You’re Not In This Alone’ campaign, through offering free entry to supporters with mental health issues, raising over £400 for Mind Lancing, supporting the Time to Talk Day in February 2019 and raising over £1,000 for CALM – The Campaign Against Living Miserably.
In addition, Lancing supported the Fairtrade Foundation through the purchasing of Fairtrade-certified footballs for the new Ladies squad. The club came runners-up in the Active Sussex ‘Club of the Year’ category in November 2018.
In February 2019 the club was saddened to hear about the passing of long-serving committee member, Michael Clark, who managed the 100 Club, manned the turnstile and supported the club in the later years of his life.
In the 2019/20 season, the club introduced a
new Disability team, and appointed a new management team consisting of Naim Rouane, David Altendorff and Kane Louis for the season. The first team had an excellent campaign, the best in the club’s history, however the season was brought to a premature end following the Covid-19 outbreak. The Lancers were top of the league looking to be promoted but with the season voided by the FA they were left to compete in the SCFL for another season.
Ahead of the 2020/21 season, Kane Louis and James Rhodes were appointed Joint Managers of the first team following the departure of Rouane and Altendorff. James and Kane kept the existing backroom staff of Matt Evans, Mark Stuart, Lloyd Osland and Georgina Hill.
Following a second curtailed season due to Covid-19, and thanks to FA restructuring, Lancing were promoted to the Pitching In Isthmian League South East Division after finishing top on points per game in the SCFL Premier Division over the course of two seasons. This movement from Step 5 to Step 4 in the English pyramid marked a huge achievement for the club, in what was appropriately also their 80th anniversary.
