A warm welcome to East Court and to our visitors from the coast. Littlehampton have had a tough season but are also on their day capable of giving any team in this division a game so we're expecting it to be a tough 90 minutes.
Our ambitions for the rest of the season are pretty clear. There has been a decent gap between the bottom three and the rest for much of the season but we could certainly do with a few results to ease any concerns. We certainly need to try and bridge the six points between us and 16th place and get back into the 'pack'.
If you’re reading this we’ve managed to get the game on despite the deluges last week. We've now had ten home games called off this season (first team) and better drainage of the pitch, which is otherwise in good condition, will no doubt be investigated during the summer.
On Tuesday we take on Horndean at the start of run of midweek matches here at East Court. There's a lot to play for so make sure you give the lads your support today.

Good afternoon and welcome to today's important game against Littlehampton. Let's hope after all the recent rain the game can go ahead on a decent surface which will help both teams.
Had it not been called off, Tuesday's game with Ramsgate would have been our fifth game in six against teams either in the top three or within the playoffs. We knew it was going to be a difficult period and it has been, made worse by existing injuries and a couple more from last Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Sittingbourne.
That game was pretty much everything I knew it would be, a very scrappy affair decided on by mistakes. We fought hard from the start and created probably the better of the chances in both halves but were punished by our own individual error which we could argue wouldn’t have happened given the state of the pitch.
The fact the game went ahead puzzled most on both sides and the injury sustained by the Sittingbourne centre half pretty much summed up why the game probably shouldn’t have been played at all. I wish Michael Turner a speedy and full recovery. We lost Bobby Dunn and Cam Lawson in the muddy conditions, and they now are added to Glenn, Greeny and Cads which is a huge blow we’ll have to try and overcome.
As for the boys who did play, special mention goes to Olly Spinks on his full debut, not a game he will want to remember due to the conditions, but I thought he along with Zack at right back and Jasper at centre half were excellent.
It’s gone fairly unnoticed, but we now have six or seven players in and around the starting 11 all aged 21 and under.
The other boys worked hard but as has been the case for a few weeks now but we are not getting the rub of the green and then being punished at the other end. I said to the guys after if we show that fight and willingness to work hard, results and points will soon follow.
This is the start of a run where we have three huge matches, two of which are at home where we need to be looking at maximum points.
As ever we thank all the travelling fans who went up to Sittingbourne and look forward to seeing you all at the next few home games, where I hope you will be loud and proud - starting today.
DrewGood afternoon everyone and welcome to East Court for today’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Littlehampton Town.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our supporters, the Golds’ players, management, officials and supporters as well as this afternoon’s referee Conor Griffin and his assistants Gulam Damji and Matthew Leaning. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality.
After two back to back wins in January, Mitchell Hand and George Gaskin’s Golds have had one win and drawn two in their last seven league matches. They are currently 16th, one place and one point above Wasps who have a game in hand. We last met in November at the Sportsfield when we won 21 with both our goals coming from skipper Glenn Wilson, one from the spot. We could well do with a repeat today as we look to leapfrog back over today’s visitors.
Drew Cooney’s Wasps have recently slipped to 17th place with 24 points from 26 matches. We have picked up just five points in our last eight matches but none in our last five. Injuries to the likes of skipper Glenn Wilson, Tom Cadman and Ryan Green have not helped the cause and we suffered further setbacks last Saturday at Sittingbourne when we lost both Camron Lawson and Bobby Dunn in what was Bobby’s first match after rejoining the Wasps.
In my opinion, that match should never have been allowed to be played. Our best wishes go to Sittingbourne’s Mike Turner who suffered a triple leg break and a dislocation of the ankle in the first half when he slid in with a tackle on Bobby Dunn who thankfully didn’t get injured in that incident as he jumped up out of the way. The match was stopped, and
an ambulance took Mike Turner to hospital.
Bobby’s injury came in the second half and he had to be carried off. We also wish him and Camron speedy recoveries.
Last Tuesday’s match against Ramsgate was postponed because of heavy rain and a waterlogged pitch. The match has been rescheduled for Tuesday 26th March.
We are at home again this Tuesday when we welcome Horndean for their first ever visit to East Court. We then travel to Phoenix Sports nest Saturday.
Thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home.
Enjoythematch

I'm going to talk about a couple of games played in the past on or close to today's date with some help from the programmes we produced for the match. We start with East Grinstead v Shoreham on Saturday 9 March 2013 in division one of the Sussex County League. Division One was of course the top league, before the league decided to call its top division the premier division.
Both chairman Richard Tramontin and manager at the time Simon Funnell talk about the recent number of injuries which took seven players out of starting the last couple of games against Pagham and Lingfield. The programme has match reports for both of those games - which we lost. The defeats came after a spell of just 1 defeat in 17 games. Richard also talks about soon making applications for grants as we seek to improve the ground's facilities. If we needed any cheering up after those defeats then we could read about our reserves who had won their last two Suburban League matches and were on top of their league.
The programme also had a big full page advert telling us about Bobby Smith's testimonial match later in March when an East Grinstead team would come up against Arsenal Legends. After the match Bobby was asked if he'd like to be part of the Arsenal squad!
Onto the Shoreham game. The programme's league table shows us in eighth place with visitors Shoreham struggling in 19th place out of the 22 in the league. We had already played down in Shoreham in November and we had come home with a 6-0 win. Here at East Court Shoreham showed some improvement though we still won - this time it was 6-1! Reece Abbot scored a couple of our goals with Sam Schaaf, George Hillier-Jones, Ben Chick and Steven Major getting the rest.
Moving on a year we have East Grinstead v Selsey on Saturday 8 March 2014 in division one of course. Richard Tramontin's chairman's notes are mostly about what we are about to have done to the pitch, to our stand and to the changing rooms and clubhouse. No seating
would be available because of the work being done to add a third row of seating to the then current two rows. This would increase our seating capacity to 165.
The programme has a match report on the previous Saturday's match away to Lancing - a match which I went to watch and which had a controversial incident. With a couple of minutes to go to half-time - and with no goals having been scored - our keeper Mark Fox cleanly caught a Lancing shot. However the linesman put up his flag to tell the ref that Mark was standing behind the goal line and that the whole ball had indeed crossed the line. A huge surprise to more or less everybody and the linesman stood his ground. The goal stood. The league table shows us in fourth place with visitors Selsey ninth. We had played the away match in November and drawn 0-0.
So how did the game go in March? It wasn't a great game with defences on top. But with some 15 minutes to go we had a free-kick just outside the Selsey penalty area. Matt Geard steered the ball home to give us the lead. However, five minutes later Selsey equalised and 1-1 was how it finished - Lester Medcalf
In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match.
Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the fixture against Three Bridges earlier this season foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.
Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.
Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA.
We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead.
As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour.
Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.
Littlehampton Town Football Club was officially in 1896, but evidence suggests football was played in the town as early as 1891 and the club started in 1893.
Littlehampton Town joined the Sussex County Football League in 1928 and the club stayed in Division 1 for 67 years. The first match in the new league was against Haywards Heath and the team won 5-1. In 1949 they won the Royal Ulster Rifles (RUR) Charity Cup and the Sussex Senior Challenge Cup.
The team changed to a gold strip in 1953 and the first reference to their nickname ‘The Marigolds’ was in the Littlehampton Gazette on 13th November 1953.
Under the guidance of Terry Gill the team were successful in the late 1960s and they won the Sussex Senior Challenge Cup again in 1970.
Littlehampton Town were Division 1 runnersup eight times until they finally won the title in 1991. That year will never be forgotten.
A draw at Peacehaven & Telscombe in front of 1,400 fans meant Golds won the title on goal difference. The same year the club got through to the first round proper of The FA Cup. The highlight was a home match against Northampton Town, staged at The Sportsfield in front of 4,000 fans.
The Golds also reached the semifinal of the FA Vase, losing to Gresley Rovers over two legs. That year the team played more cup matches than league games and won the Sussex League Challenge Cup and reached the final of the Sussex Senior Cup too.
Littlehampton Town dropped to Division 2 in 1995 and Carl Stabler came back as manager and took them back up in 1997, where they were again runners-up in the division.
In 2003 they were relegated once more but made a swift return with a Division 2 league and cup double success. They fell out of the topflight again in 2008 and spent six years in Division 2.
Mark Bennett, a former player from the 1991 season, joined as manager and oversaw the Division 2 title in 2013, where they only lost four league games all season and were
finalists in the John O’Hara Cup. In 2015 they recaptured the Division 1 title for the first time in 23 years on the final day and the last year of the Sussex County Football League. With Mark Bennett’s departure, player George Gaskin took over management of the club and guided the team to a mid-table finish. A year later the team dropped out of the topflight and into Division 1. In 2018, Littlehampton Town welcomed back both Mark Bennett as manager and George Gaskin as striker to help rebuild the club and return them to former glories. With Gaskin joined at the managerial helm by Mitchell Hand, the first year back in the Southern Combination Football League Premier Division was arguably the best in the team’s 126-year history to date. The Marigolds won the title, again on the final day of the season in front of 1,000 fans. But it was also in the cups that brought them so much glory. As winners of both the League Cup and the RUR Charity Cup, a historic treble was nearly a quadruple as the team became the first from Sussex to reach Wembley to play in the FA Vase final, losing 3-0 to Newport Pagnell. Still, a fantastic achievement and the club finished a respectable 12th in their firstever season at Step 4 in the Isthmian Football League South East Division last year.
