WELCOME TO EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN

Good afternoon and welcome to our visitors from Phoenix Sports. We hope you have an enjoyable visit and we wish you a safe journey home. Welcome also to today's match officials - have a good game gents!

After a poor performance against Erith last Saturday (we have only won two home games since March by the way!) we'd hoped to get a positive result at Broadbridge Heath on Tuesday. After an even first 40 minutes we gifted them two goals and another softish third just after the break. But Drew made good use of his bench and two goals in three minutes for us seemed to have turned the tide. But we couldn't maintain the momentum and BBH got a fourth on the break in stoppage time. Some positives for us in the way we fought back from 3-0 down, but we made it very hard for ourselves by giving away some bad goals.

Let's hope for a more consistent performance today, as a glance at the table shows how important a 90 minutes it is. Remember, Lancing are the visitors on Tuesday in the Sussex Senior Cup.

COME ON YOU WASPS!

MANAGER’S NOTES

Good afternoon and welcome to everyone for today’s game against Phoenix Sports. It is a game that both teams will want to pick up maximum points from and for us it’s going to be a lot tougher task than it looks on paper.

Phoenix are under a completely new management team and will be very different from the side we beat away earlier in the season. I know Darren well and he was responsible for Beckenham’s fantastic start to the campaign so he will bring with him several new players and look to reshape the squad completely.

As for us we have had a horrible week, A 40 loss on Saturday at home to Erith was followed up with a 4-2 defeat away at Broadbridge Heath on Tuesday. Personally, I think Erith are one of the better teams we have played this season and deserved the result - they are a very well drilled unit. They all know their jobs and work extremely hard for each other and their manager Adam Woodward. It’s very difficult at this level to get an entire group to buy into that but they do so fair play to them.

Broadbridge Heath on Tuesday was more of the same from a month or so back with us causing our own problems with individual errors. Conceding two goals just before half time gave us an uphill task. When we did get back into it at 3-2 we were on top but they killed us on the counter and overall deserved the win. We are at a make or break stage for some of the squad. We had a meeting on Thursday before training and there will be more than a few players who now know

that have the weekend to show me and the rest of the management team that they actually want to be part of this team.

We are actively looking to get a few in for next week, this weekend has just come around too quickly. But if we are honest we are massively missing Matt Pierson in goal, Tom Cadman and Michael Wilson. They are all huge losses and that’s starting to show.

We are playing several lads out of position to plug holes which is fine for a game or two but no more than that. But we must crack on, and a good result today would make a big difference.

We hope you all get behind the lads and push us towards a much needed home win.

Thanks, Drew

PAST PROGRAMMES

I have a couple of programmes to share with you for games played in the past at the end of the first week in November. We’ll start with East Grinstead v Chichester on Saturday 10 November 2011 in division one of the Sussex County League. We have Michael Belli on the front cover – these days he is playing for (and captaining) Crawley Down in the County League’s senior division.

Chairman Richard Tramontin's club notes remind us that we had already played the away match against Chichester some five weeks earlier when we were in the bottom three of the league. We had won that game 4-1 with two of the goals coming from penalties awarded when the above Michael Belli had twice been fouled. And then we went on to win all three of our subsequent league matches putting us up in 11th. On the other hand, Chichester had lost all their league games since our win and were now second from bottom.

The programme had a detailed match report from our most recent league match away to Worthing United (who were in fact the bottom team in the league – without a win). We had a penalty in the first couple of minutes – with Michael Belli again involved though this time his shot was handled – and by half-time we were 3-2 up. Another four goals in the second half saw us winning 7-3.

We must have fancied our chances of beating Chichester again here at East Court, perhaps with a few goals. And that’s what happened –Sam Schaaf, Dave Gellatly, Ben Chick, Sam Cane all scored one goal each as did Michael Belli - on his own this time - with Chichester scoring none at all as against our five. Coming a little closer in time we'll now have a look at the programme for East Grinstead v Walton Casuals on Tuesday 7 November 2017 in the Isthmian League.

Bruce Talbot's club notes have a very different flavour to them – a flavour that I'm sure he had used some years before. At its simplest he was making a case for football at our level to be played from March to October – missing

out those cold, wet and wintery months. Bigger gates, grass pitches in better condition, not so much use of floodlights. I think we've all seen the case made before. However, I'm a bit surprised that Bruce makes his case given his own interest in county cricket – an interest he certainly shares with me, though he's a Sussex supporter while I'm an Essex man.

Manager Matt Longhurst tells us that we continue to have players missing through injury and through loan players returning to their parent club. And we even had a couple of players – one of whom scored most of our goals – involved in a car crash on their way home after our most recent match. Not too serious but will miss a game or two.

The programme's league table shows us third from the bottom after a couple of recent 4-0 defeats while our visitors from Walton are just above the halfway mark. Unfortunately, things continued to go against us as we lost 2-0.

If you’ve had your memory jogged by this article then I’d be happy to hear from you at lestermedcalf@btinternet.com.

PHOENIX SPORTS

PHOENIX SPORTS CLUB - A BRIEF HISTORY

Formed in 1935, Phoenix Sports Club originally started out as St. Johns Welling, later changing its name to Lakeside, before renaming to Phoenix following the Second World War.

Over the years the club has played at various locations including Danson Park until 1950, when the local council offered them a piece of waste land in Mayplace Road East, Bexleyheath. Over time it evolved into the ground that we all know now as Phoenix Sports Club.

Both football and cricket have been played at Mayplace Road East, with many members, both past and present, representing the club in both sports. However, with the growth of junior football, cricket has now moved away. After entering various leagues, including the Sidcup League, Kent Amateur League and the Dartford League, the club eventually settled in the Kent County League Division One West. In the 1986/87 season, the club entered the Spartan League and competed there for six seasons. They then returned to the Kent County League - Division One - West, winning the Challenge Cup in 1993-94.

In 1999/2000 we won the league, gaining promotion to the Premier Division, however after two relegations ended up in Division Two West, finally returning to the first division in 2004/05, and then back to the Premier Division in 2007/08.

After three seasons in the Premier Division, the first team became founder members of the Kent Invicta League at Step 6 of the National League System (Step 10 of the English Football League System) – the highest level of football the club had ever played at. Unfortunately, the team management both resigned for personal reasons at the end of season 2011-12. After an exhaustive process we appointed Steve O’Boyle and Tony Beckingham as Joint First Team Managers. Off the pitch we installed floodlights and a 108-seat stand and with further improvements around the ground we soon received an F Grade.

We had a successful first campaign under the new management structure, and after losing only two league games all season, Phoenix won the Kent Invicta League and gained promotion to the Kent League (now renamed the Southern Counties East Football League) to play at step 5 of the National League System.

We finished in sixth place in our inaugural season but had aims to do even better the next year and reached the fourth round of the FA Vase where we lost to the eventual winners North Shields.

In the League we managed to lose only one game all season and accumulated 30 clean sheets which sealed promotion to Isthmian League north division as champions. In 2017 Phoenix switched to the south division with ninth place achieved in 2019 before relegation three years later, by which time Paul Byron had taken over as manager.

O'Boyle was back in the dugout in 2022 to lead a side hungry for a quick return to Step 4. A great season saw us finish as runners up and after a dramatic play-off at VCD a last-minute penalty saw us return to the Isthmian League. He kept the club up last season before resigning. Keith McMahon was appointed at the start of this season but a few weeks ago he was replaced by Darren Anslow, who left leaders Beckenham Town to join Phoenix.

Not much positive to report last Saturday but here we see Ollie Spinks (top pic) and Omar Folkes taking the game to what was a very good Erith team. Photos: Stuart Gibson.
