Good afternoon and a warm welcome to all those who have made the trip to East Court with our visitors. Our inconsistent form continued in 2024. The 4-0 win at Erith - with four different goalscorers - was a welcome boost so it was disappointing that we failed to build on it at Burgess Hill a week ago, where we conceded some poor goals and found ourselves 3-0 down at the break. The second half was much better but the damage was done. Nonetheless, with 12 of our remaining 20 games here at home and players now returning from suspension we're optimistic about the second half of the season. Wednesday night at Ramsgate - one of our longest away trips of the season and against a side looking to bounce back after suffering only their second defeat - was always a tough ask and so it proved. Onwards and upwards then, starting today. COME ON THE WASPS!

MANAGER’S NOTES
Drew Cooney
Afternoon all and a warm welcome to today’s huge clash against Phoenix Sports. We really have had a December and start of January to forget. We always knew it was going to be a really tough period with four of our seven opponents in the top six in the league. Only two wins have come in this period with the rest of the games ending in defeat and we have conceded far too many goals for my liking. We have been plagued with absentees and injuries over this period but we make no excuses for the poor results. I told the guys on Wednesday night after the Ramsgate game that we need to pick ourselves up quickly and bounce back in today’s fixture which really is a must win game now. I’ve been here before with the club and it’s on me to turn things around and get back on track in terms of our pre-season aim of a top-half finish.

It is still achievable with everyone committed to the cause. As ever we ask for every single one of the fans to get behind me and the lads today. Thanks as always, Drew

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES Good afternoon everyone and welcome to East Court for today’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Phoenix Sports, assuming the snow covering has gone and the pitch is no longer frozen. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our supporters, the Phoenix players and supporters, Steve O’Boyle and his management team, Phoenix Charman Andrew Mortlock and his fellow committee members as well as this afternoon’s match referee Thomas Baines and his assistants Stephen Ryan and Scott Crowhurst. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality. Boyley’s Phoenix Sports have picked up of late and won three of their last five matches, with impressive wins over Sevenoaks, Ashford Utd and Chichester but suffered a 40 defeat last Saturday at home against Broadbridge Heath.
respectively! Thanks to the Grin Army who braved the weather and made the long trip to Ramsgate on Wednesday. They will be back in force today, getting behind and cheering the boys on. Thanks as always to you all and I hope you will be going home with smiles on your faces. Our next match is away to Ashford Utd next Saturday followed by the twice postponed home fixture against Lancing which has been rescheduled to Tuesday 23rd (ko7.30pm), followed by another two January home matches – Broadbridge Heath on Saturday the 27th and Sittingbourne on Tuesday 30th. Thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home. Enjoy the match Richard
They are currently in 17th place with 18 points from 21 matches, four places below Drew Cooney’s Wasps with one less point, although Phoenix have played three more matches.

Both sides will be looking for three points this afternoon. The last time we met was in the 2021/22 season when East Grinstead Town won both at home and away by a single goal – 2-1 away with goals from Omar Folkes and Miles Cornwell and Max Walsh scored the only goal of the home match. Wasps started 2024 with an impressive 4-0 win over Erith & Belvedere but subsequently lost at Burgess Hill last Saturday and at Ramsgate on Wednesday evening. The only thing that would be great to replicate here today from those last two matches, is the attendance which was 525 and 477 www.egtfc.co.uk

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST
10
www.egtfc.co.uk
Once again we had some club notes telling us that we weren’t playing Mike Oak – we were playing Steyning Town! I can confirm it was Mile Oak we played. The club notes look back at the two Christmas games that we had played – and saw the first two defeats since Steve Norris had taken over as manager. 200 people saw neighbours Lingfield winning 1-0 here at East Court followed by a 5-2 loss down at Westfield. Despite those two defeats Steve was still hopeful that we might make our way into the top two. The programme’s league table has us in sixth place with Mile Oak quite a bit lower in 13th place – there were 18 teams in the league. We had already played them away in late October and somehow we had won 3-2 in a game where Mile Oak had three penalties, only scoring from one of them. So Mile Oak were probably happy enough to take a point home from East Court in a 2-2 draw. Jez Tobin got our first goal and our 2024 manager Drew Cooney scored very late on for us to restrict Mile Oak to that one point. Lester Medcalf
Ben Burns on the cover against Mile Oak 17 years ago
I’m going back a few years for the programmes for games played in the past on today’s date. We start with East Grinstead v Mile Oak on Saturday 13 January 2001 in division 2 of the Sussex County League. On opening the programme I had a bit of a surprise. We’re told that we are playing Crawley Down - and it also tells us that it is the year 2000 and not 2001. Bruce Talbot’s notes sort of explain why it says we are playing Crawley Down. He reminds us that we were due to be playing Crawley Down at home on Boxing Day - which was on a Tuesday. It had, like the current 2023/24 season, been a wet December and we had played a home match on December 23. We did a lot of work on the pitch but when the referee arrived for the Boxing Day match he called the game off. Much to our surprise and disappointment of course. Let’s now talk a bit more about the Mile Oak game. We welcomed them to East Court with a reminder that we had beaten them in our away match in August - 2-0 with goals from Dave Gellatly and Ian Pennells. The league table shows them in seventh place with us three places, but only one point, behind them. We had only played twice in both November and December and had five games in hand. This January fixture against Mile Oak did get played and Mile Oak got off to a great start with only 20 minutes on the clock they were 20 up but five minutes later we pulled a goal back through James Hylton. And a few minutes before half-time Roger Gualtieri pulled us level. Even better in the second half with Roger scoring his second goal on the hour. And 3-2 was how it ended. This turned out to be our only game in January - and we only played twice in February as well. I’m now moving on another six years and we found ourselves again the same opponents – East Grinstead v Mile Oak on Saturday 13 January 2007. Again in division two of the County League. Our programme has moved on with a match photo on the front cover – for this game we have Ben Burns in our away kit.

CLUB NOTICE Supporter Behaviour In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match. Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the fixture against Three Bridges earlier this season foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.
Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA. We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead. As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour.

Delight for Jerson and the Grin Army after his goal at Erith.
Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.
Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.

TODAY’s GUESTS
PHOENIX SPORTS Andy Walker Experienced goalkeeper Andy won promotion in his first season with the club and recorded the least amount of goals conceded in the league with 33. He has also played at Wembley. Henry Douglas Henry has been around Phoenix for many years now. After breaking through to the first team back in 2019 he is our second longest serving player.
Gael Mulamba-Kileba Recently joining Phoenix Sports, Gael possesses some quick feet and a lot of pace and was at West Ham United when he was younger. Michael Sarpong Sarpong joined from Fisher FC and likes to drive with the football using his strength and power.
Jamie Watson Jamie came in from relegated VCD Athletic, his addition to the club brings us composure and some pace. Cameron Brodie Joining us from Chatham Town, Cameron is a strong midfielder who also played at Dartford alongside Andy Pugh and Ryan Hayes. Lewis Clark Mr. Phoenix. Joined in 2017 and bleeds green and black. A consistent performer who will do anything for the club. Ryan Hayes Skipper Ryan scored that all important penalty against VCD Athletic to send us up. A Dartford legend and the current top goal scorer at Phoenix Sports. Thomas O'Connor Thomas is quite injury prone... however, when fit, he is a major part of the Phoenix Sports team and has magic in his boots. Andy Pugh A traditional striker. Andy has had his fair share of injuries with us but has been a real difference maker when on the pitch. Kieran King Youngster who broke into the first team last season and has played in some very big games for his age.
