A warm welcome to East Court and to our visitors from the Kent coast. It was odd to look at a league table last week that didn’t have Ramsgate top but they were duly restored there on Saturday and look odds-on for promotion. Good luck to them for the rest of the season and beyond.
Our ambitions for the rest of the season are more modest. There has been a decent gap between the bottom three and the rest for much of the season but we could certainly do with a few results to ease any concerns. We certainly need to try and bridge the six points between us and 16th place and get back into the 'pack'.
If you’re reading this we’ve managed to get the game on despite the deluges last week. We'vw now had nine games called off this season (first team) and better drainage of the pitch, which is otherwise in good condition, will no doubt be investigated during the summer.
By all accounts Saturday's game shouldn't have gone ahead but it did and we have to accept it and try and bounce back tonight. No one will give us much of a chance against the Rams so what have we got to lose?

Evening all as we host the league leaders Ramsgate. This is our fifth game in six against teams either in the top three or within the playoffs. We knew it was going to be a difficult period and it has been, made worse by existing injuries and a couple more from the weekend’s 2-0 defeat to Sittingbourne.
That game was pretty much everything I knew it would be, a very scrappy affair decided on by mistakes. We fought hard from the start and created probably the better of the chances in both halves but were punished by our own individual error which we could argue wouldn’t have happened given the state of the pitch.
The fact the game went ahead puzzled most on both sides and the injury sustained by the Sittingbourne centre half pretty much summed up why the game probably shouldn’t have been played at all. I wish Michael Turner a speedy and full recovery. We lost Bobby Dunn and Cam Lawson in the muddy conditions, and they now are added to Glenn, Greeny and Cads which is a huge blow we’ll have to try and overcome.
As for the boys who did play, special mention goes to Olly Spinks on his full debut, not a game he will want to remember due to the conditions, but I thought he along with Zack at right back and Jasper at centre half were excellent. It’s gone fairly unnoticed, but we now have six or seven players in and around the starting 11 all aged 21 and under.
The other boys worked hard but as has
been the case for a few weeks now but we are not getting the rub of the green and then being punished at the other end. I said to the guys after if we show that fight and willingness to work hard, results and points will soon follow.
After tonight’s game we have three huge matches, two of which are at home where we need to be looking at maximum points.
As ever we thank all the travelling fans who went up to Sittingbourne and look forward to seeing you all at the next few home games, where I hope you will be loud and proud.
DrewGood evening everyone and welcome to East Court for tonight’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Ramsgate.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to all Wasps supporters, the Rams’ players, management, officials and supporters as well as this evening’s referee Jonathon Wilks and his assistants Ian Lane and John Pike. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality.
Ben Smith’s Ramsgate are joint favourites with Cray Valley PM to get automatic promotion this season. The Rams leapfrogged Cray Valley at the weekend with a 4 -0 victory over Ashford United while Cray Valley lost their first match of the season to Three Bridges at home after leading 4-3 at the end of 90 minutes only to concede twice in added time. The Rams are now two points clear with both having played 27 matches.
Our trip to the Southfields Stadium in January was the start of a run of four consecutive wins for the Rams, followed by two draws, then a surprise home loss to Merstham and then two consecutive wins.
Ramsgate of course had a fantastic run in the FA Cup, reaching the Second Round where they lost to AFC Wimbledon in front of a crowd of 6,893.
We have recently slipped to 17th place with 24 points from 26 matches. We have picked up just five points in our last eight games and none in our last five. Injuries to key players have not helped the cause. Drew will be keen to get them back on the pitch, including skipper Glenn Wilson and Tom Cadman, but we suffered further setbacks on Saturday when Bobby Dunn was injured in his first match after rejoining the Wasps in a match at Sittingbourne which, in my opinion, should never have been allowed to be played.
Our best wishes go to Sittingbourne’s Mike Turner who suffered a triple leg break and a dislocation of the ankle when he slid in with a tackle on Bobby Dunn who thankfully didn’t get injured in that incident as he jumped up out of the way. The match was stopped, and an ambulance took Mike to hospital. Bobby’s injury came in the second half and he had to be carried off. We wish him a speedy recovery.
Tonight is the first of three consecutive home matches. Littlehampton Town are our visitors on Saturday followed by the first ever visit by Horndean next Tuesday. We then travel to Phoenix Sports on Saturday 16th March.
Thank you all for coming along this evening and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home.
Enjoythematch

We’re going to have a look at the programmes produced for games played in the past in the month of February.
We’ll start with East Grinstead v Crowborough on Wednesday 10 February 2010 in division one of the County League - with, as normal, our midweek games starting at 7.30.
Both teams were at the wrong end of the league table. Crowborough were in bottom place, though a recent change of manager had brought a couple of wins and a draw in their last three games while our last three league matches had seen three single goal defeats. The programme has a lengthy report on our most recent game - a cup match at home to Shoreham. Our Matt Crane was sent off on the stroke of half-time when the score was 0-0 and that was also the score at the end of the 90 minutes. And guess what? It was also the score after 30 minutes of extra time. But penalties saw Shoreham winning 4-3. Goalkeeper Liam Lindsay was making his first appearance for us and kept out a Shoreham penalty in the extra-time period.
So what happened against Crowborough? The night was bitterly cold with some snow on the pitch and we didn’t look as if we wanted to be out there. Crowborough did look as if they wanted to be out there playing. They won 3-1 and overtook us - though they had played five more games than us.
More or less a year later it’s East Grinstead v Arundel on Saturday 12 February 2011, again in division one of the County League - from which you will gather that we didn’t get relegated at the end of the above 2009/10 season.
Manager Tony Beckingham recalls a 10-2 win at the end of January against Shoreham and so is rather disappointed with the recent defeats away to both Lingfield and Redhill, despite us leading at half time in both matches.
Richard Tramontin’s chairman’s notes also talk about that win and those defeats but adds something that still surprises me - that our keeper Danny Harwood had been sent off in
the match at Lingfield and apparently he was our fourth goalkeeper to be sent off since the start of the season ! Was this true?
Richard also tells us that, following damage done to our clubhouse by burst water pipes in a very cold winter, the clubhouse flooring had been re-laid. More work was still needed in the tea bar and the clubhouse kitchen.
The programme’s league table shows us in ninth place and visitors Arundel three places below. We had played them in the RUR charity cup at East Court in October and they had beaten us 1-0. Here in February goals by Richard Sinden and Liam Baitup were now to give us a 2-1 league match victory.

In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match.
Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the fixture against Three Bridges earlier this season foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.
Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.
Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA.
We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead.
As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour.
Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.
Ramsgate is one of the largest non-League clubs in Kent, and for the 2022/23 season are fielding 78 senior and youth teams, which includes three for women and ten for girls. The club continues to grow and, following the installation of the first fixed Panna Cages at an English football stadium in 2020, they replaced the pitch at Southwood with a new all-weather surface that was opened with a visit from Spurs’ Under-23s in July 2021.
The current club restarted in 1945, after the ban on football in east Kent during World War Two was lifted, and the club was originally called Ramsgate Athletic. We have played at the Southwood Stadium ever since.
Ramsgate has had senior football teams within the town since the late 1800s, and despite the paucity of newspaper coverage of in the late 19th century there are reports of Ramsgate Athletic playing at Southwood along with the principal side, Ramsgate Town, who started in about 1886 (team photos exist from 1898).
In 1919 Southwood was provided for Ramsgate Town, by then known as Ramsgate, by Henry Weigall JP and Lady Rose Weigall. In their first season they finished third in the Kent FA League and reached the Kent Senior Cup final but lost to Northfleet at Maidstone 1-0 before a crowd of 10,000.
In 1924 Ramsgate folded and Ramsgate Grenville moved to Southwood and, apart from the rise and fall of the more successful Dumpton-based Ramsgate Press Wanderers in the 1930s, Grenville became the senior Ramsgate side until another World War cancelled football.
Post-World War Two honours have been many especially in the late 1940s and through the 1950s, and again in the late 1960s and 1980s (and not forgetting the mid-2000s). Some say the ‘golden period’ was from 1954-57 when former Scottish international Jimmy Blair was player-manager, and the Rams were back-toback Kent League champions.
Club history was made when they reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time in 1955, narrowly losing 5-3 at Watford (a record
that stood for 50 years before they reached that stage again). With the demise of the Kent FA League in 1959, the Rams joined the Southern League. The club have had spells in the Southern, Kent and Isthmian Leagues since then.
Bringing their story up to date, former Wasps’ Matt Longhurst was appointed manager in January 2020. After two years in charge, four losses in a row saw Longhurst replaced by former Gillingham coach Steve Lovell in April 2022.
In May 2023 Ramsgate showed their intentions by appointing former Herne Bay boss Ben Smith as their first full-time manager on a twoyear contract.
