week makes!
were all a
dumps after two 1-0 defeats
turned it around in the last
win over Lancing last Saturday was as comfortable as the 2-0 score suggests and we followed it up on Tuesday at Three Bridges, which is happily proving to be a happy hunting ground for us these days. Although we lost a 2-0 lead, Andrew Briggs’ instinctive finish restored the lead which we protected well in the closing stages. The other big talking point were the 12 bookings!
the same evening the under-23s were winning 3-1 at Margate, a heroic effort considering the distance we had to travel. Well done to all concerned and see you back here on Tuesday for the League Cup tie against The Tanners of Leatherhead.

We welcome everyone back for today’s home fixtures against top of the league Ramsgate.
It’s been a good week after the disappointment of two back-to-back 1-0 defeats. In both games although we didn’t play well I don’t think we deserved not to pick up anything. We started the week with a convincing 20 home win against Lancing last Saturday followed by the midweek trip to local rivals Three bridges where we came away 3-2 winners.
We have set ourselves a points total for October so picking up six from nine in the first three games has been very pleasing. We know today’s opponents and next week’s away fixture at high-flying Whitehawk will be very tough. But the boys accept that if we genuinely have the ambition this year to kick on we need to be picking up points against both of these clubs. We also have a League Cup tie at home to Leatherhead on Tuesday and the opportunity to start another cup run.
We have added a couple of additions this week with the return of a familiar face in Ainsley Everett, who has come back to the club. I think he will prove to be a really good addition to the current squad. We have also seen the return to the starting line-up of Dean Perona. He has been exceptional in the past couple of games and adds size and presence in the middle of the park.
Ian, Sarg and I would like to thank all the fans for all their support over the last couple of games and look forward to seeing you all again today, getting behind the lads.
Finally, a special mention to Danny Uchechi and his family following the new arrival of their baby girl!
Goodlucktous–Drew.
Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The OHOB Community Stadium for today’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Ramsgate and we warmly welcome their players, management, officials and supporters.
A special welcome as well to today’s referee Will Briers and his assistants Harry Wood and Ryan Calver.
Drew Cooney’s Wasps have won their last two matches which has put us in eighth place in the league with 13 points from 8 matches. In a scrappy and feisty match at Three Bridges on Tuesday, they went in at the break with a 2-0 lead, but the home side drew level within eight minutes of the restart. In the 67th minute, Andrew Briggs took advantage of a slip by the host’s keeper and deftly lofted the ball into the back of the net which proved to be the winner. Briggsy scored his opener for the season on Saturday with a free kick against Lancing in a 20 win after Matt Daniel had put the Wasps into an early lead. Matt’s goal against Bridges on Tuesday was his 10th so far this season in all competitions.
Today we face the League leaders which will be a stern test. Steve Lovell’s Rams have played eight matches and are on 17 points having lost just the once which was at home to Sheppey United by 2-1 last Saturday. Their squad this afternoon will probably feature three ex Wasps, Callum Emptage, Jake McIntyre and Lee Prescott. The Rams did the double over the Wasps last season with a 2-0 win here in November in Drew’s first match in charge with Tony Beckingham following Tony Reid’s departure and then 3-0 in March in Ramsgate. Drew and the lads will be going all out to avenge those defeats. We look forward to an entertaining match.
We are back here in action on Tuesday evening (18th October) in the Velocity Cup against Leatherhead (ko 7.30pm). We then travel to Whitehawk next Saturday before hosting newly promoted Littlehampton Town the following Saturday.
Jay De Vito’s Under 18s are in League Cup action here on Thursday evening against Lewes and the following Thursday Andy Willis’ and Grant Hearn’s Under 23s host Chatham Town after picking up
their first points of the season on Tuesday at Margate, winning 3-1 with two goals from Zack Lamont and one from Harvey Burgess. Both matches kick off at 7.30pm
My thanks and a big welcome to a new volunteer, Sarah, who will be on the turnstiles this afternoon. Sarah’s husband and son Harry are keen Wasps’ supporters. We are always looking for more volunteers in various areas at the club. Volunteers are the backbone of grassroots football across the country. Why not join Sarah and our other loyal volunteers at your local community club, get active and meet new people. Areas where we could do with more support include bar, stewarding, turnstiles, media etc so if anyone wants to get involved, please speak to me or one of my colleagues.
I would like to thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to The OHOB Community Stadium and I wish you all a safe journey home.
Enjoythematch

A couple of programmes for games played in the past on today’s date – the first going back 31 years for a game against the club who were then the top non-league club in Sussex. A Sussex Floodlight Cup match East Grinstead v Crawley Town on Tuesday 15 October 1991. The match was the first leg in the competition’s second round. (In the first round of the competition we had played Haywards Heath home and away, with the away match being the very first time I had seen East Grinstead play – I remember Bobby Smith scoring.)
Our visitors had won the Cup in the previous season. We are told that Steve Norris scored Crawley’s goal in that 1-0 Cup win (v Worthing). Tonight, he was playing for us. Steve did of course play for us many many times either side of his time with Crawley. He was also a successful manager for us a few years later. We still see him now and again at matches and around the town.
We had recently had a good run with four unbeaten games – including a 2-2 draw against league leaders Midhurst in what had been “a superb advert for second division football” – but it had come to an end three days before the Crawley match when “a dismal performance from Wasps” down in Seaford saw us lose 4-0. Crawley, on the other hand, had just reached the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup.
Did we kill the giant? No, we didn’t. We came nowhere near as Crawley enjoyed the short trip back home with a 6-0 win under their belts. But there was still a second leg for us to fight back in – well we managed a goal but Crawley managed four to add to the six. (In the FA Cup Crawley eventually reached the third round proper where they lost 5-0 to Brighton.)
Rather more recent we’ll have a look at a County League Division One match between East Grinstead v Pagham on Saturday 15 October 2011 with Marc Pelling (now playing for Crawley Down) concentrating hard on the front cover.
Pagham are normally a pretty good side, and they came to East Court having won all 12 of their 12 league matches with goal-scoring machine Scott Murfin having so far contributed 13 goals. We had also had a pretty decent run with just one defeat in a run of eight cup and league games. However, this run had come to an end on the previous Saturday with a surprise 3-0 home defeat to Selsey, though it was a game where we felt the referee had much to answer for – indeed he admitted after the game that he had probably got a penalty award to Selsey wrong. And he missed a bad foul on one of our players in the build-up to another Selsey goal.
A midweek trip to play Ringmer on their slope also ended in defeat, though that was much our own fault as we missed a number of chances. Ringmer scored the only goal – or rather Dave Gellatly’s foot deflected the ball past our goalkeeper - and it just about trickled over the goal line.
The programme looks back at a couple of past games against Pagham and manages to pick out a couple that we had won. In 2003 Kris Trevor’s hat-trick (helped by our 2022 under 23 team manager Grant Hearn’s defensive work) give us a 3-0 win. A couple of years later Kris was again on the score sheet along with Matt Bradford though it took a goal from fullback Peter Benton - scoring what might have been his only goal for the club – to secure a 32 win.
But no such luck in 2011 as Pagham made it 13 out of 13 with a 3-0 win with Murfin among the scorers.
If you’re wondering why this year you can’t see Pagham in the same league as Crawley Down it’s because Pagham have been moved to a Wessex League to play teams from Hampshire and even further westwards.

Ramsgate is one of the largest non-League clubs in Kent, and for the 2022/23 season are fielding 78 senior and youth teams, which includes three for women and ten for girls. The club continues to grow and, following the installation of the first fixed Panna Cages at an English football stadium in 2020, they replaced the pitch at Southwood with a new all-weather surface that was opened with a visit from Spurs’ Under-23s in July 2021.
The current club restarted in 1945, after the ban on football in east Kent during World War Two was lifted, and the club was originally called Ramsgate Athletic. We have played at the Southwood Stadium ever since.
Ramsgate has had senior football teams within the town since the late 1800s, and despite the paucity of newspaper coverage of in the late 19th century there are reports of Ramsgate Athletic playing at Southwood along with the principal side, Ramsgate Town, who started in about 1886 (team photos exist from 1898).
In 1919 Southwood was provided for Ramsgate Town, by then known as Ramsgate, by Henry Weigall JP and Lady Rose Weigall. In their first season they finished third in the Kent FA League and reached the Kent Senior Cup final but lost to Northfleet at Maidstone 1-0 before a crowd of 10,000.
In 1924 Ramsgate folded and Ramsgate Grenville moved to Southwood and, apart from the rise and fall of the more successful
Dumpton-based Ramsgate Press Wanderers in the 1930s, Grenville became the senior Ramsgate side until another World War cancelled football.
Post-World War Two honours have been many especially in the late 1940s and through the 1950s, and again in the late 1960s and 1980s (and not forgetting the mid-2000s). Some say the ‘golden period’ was from 1954-57 when former Scottish international Jimmy Blair was player-manager, and the Rams were back-toback Kent League champions.
Club history was made when they reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time in 1955, narrowly losing 5-3 at Watford (a record that stood for 50 years before they reached
that stage again). With the demise of the Kent FA League in 1959, the Rams joined the Southern League. The club have had spells in the Southern, Kent and Isthmian Leagues since then.
Bringing their story up to date, former Wasps’ Matt Longhurst was appointed manager in January 2020. After two years in charge, four losses in a row saw Longhurst replaced by former Gillingham coach Steve Lovell in April 2022 and although they missed out on the play-offs, Lovell was seen an ideal fit and has been retained for this season and the Rams arrive today top of the table.
