WELCOME TO EAST GRINSTEAD TOWN

A warm welcome to East Court and to our visitors from the Kent coast. It was odd to look at a league table last week that didn’t have Ramsgate top but they still look odds-on for promotion. Good luck to them for the rest of the season and beyond. No one is expecting us to get a result tonight, it's a free hit really. Hopefully the players can respond, relax and show their best.

At half-time in our delayed kick-off on Saturday things looked a bit bleak with us somehow 3-0 down despite dominating the early stages and missing a re-taken (why?) penalty and Erith and Beckenham both winning. We still lost but fortunately so did the bottom two. There is still a handy eight-point cushion with Phoenix beneath us two, but with both Erith and Beckenham still to play (at home fortunately) the threat of relegation remains. We could certainly do with a few players back after injury in time for the run-in! COME ON THE WASPS!

MANAGER’S NOTES

Welcome everyone for tonight’s home fixture to high-flying Ramsgate, who are only one point off top spot after an emphatic 7-2 win over fifth-placed Lancing on Saturday.

On the other hand, we come in to tonight’s game after another heavy defeat and what I have to admit was an error-strewn performance from our boys. There were plenty of the team and our fans pointing fingers at officials and decisions after the game but in my opinion the defeat was completely selfinflicted.

We have time and time again this season completely caved in after conceding a couple of goals. This is now becoming a very bad habit that we need to rid ourselves of before the important run in. We had the chance to go 1-0 up against Burgess Hill which, I would have to say, may have been slightly against the run of play, with both sides looking a threat on the break.

But after failing to score the re-taken penalty we were punished at least three times on quick counters from our own attacking positions which, if I’m honest, is completely unacceptable at any level of football. Fair play to Burgess Hill who were clinical with the chances they created, and we weren’t. Tonight’s game will have to be about getting some minutes into lads who need them and allowing us to really see what we have squad-wise for our run-in.

The lads have been told this and they

have also been made aware that there will need to be a reaction of sorts in terms of who we can trust to get us over the line and ensure we stay up. With so much football still to be played there will be lots of twists and turns.

It’s in our own hands of course and we have some crucial games coming up, but tonight has to be about making sure we maintain our levels and make it as hard as possible for Ramsgate. My thanks to the fans for continuing to back us. Saturday was another really painful one for me personally and I will be doing all I can this week to get us back up to speed for the final run-in.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

Good evening everyone and welcome to East Court for today’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Ramsgate.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to the Rams’ players, management, officials and supporters as well as this evening’s referee Jonathon Wilks and his assistants Ian Lane and Patrick O'Reilly. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality.

Ben Smith’s Ramsgate have been joint favourites for automatic promotion with Cray Valley PM since the start of the season and the Rams are currently one point behind league leaders Cray Valley. Both teams won at the weekend, Ramsgate comprehensively beat fifth place Lancing 7-2 with Joe Taylor scoring four, Tijan Jadama two and Lee Martin one. That followed a surprise 1-0 defeat at Horndean last Tuesday.

Our trip to the Southfields Stadium in January was the start of a run of four consecutive wins for the Rams, followed by two draws, then a surprise home loss to Merstham. They then went on another run of four consecutive wins before last week’s matches.

Ramsgate of course had a fantastic run in the FA Cup this season, reaching the Second Round where they lost to AFC Wimbledon in front of a crowd of 6,893.

We have recently slipped to 17th place with 28 points from 30 matches. We bounced back after a five match run without picking up a point with an impressive 5-1 win over Littlehampton Town followed by a stale goalless draw at Phoenix Sports.

Conceding in the 90th minute last Tuesday to Hythe Town to lose 3-2 after leading 1-0 and 2-1 was deflating, when we deserved at least a point. Things looked to have started in our favour on Saturday when we thought we had taken the lead from the spot against Burgess Hill. However, the goal was disallowed for

encroachment but video and still photos show that there had been no encroachment until after the ball had been struck by Kiye Martin whose re-take was saved. That proved to be a bitter turning point and we went on to gift the opposition three firs- half goals and ended up losing 5-1.

Tonight will be a stern test and it looks like we will still be missing the likes of Glenn Wilson, Tom Cadman and Ryan Green through injury, but hopefully Bobby Dunn might feature tonight after his injury at Sittingbourne four weeks ago.

We travel to Herne Bay on Saturday and then host Erith & Belvedere here on Easter Monday (ko 3pm).

Thank you all for coming along this evening and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home.

Enjoythematch

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST

We'll have a look at a couple of games played in the past as we approached the end of March. First of them is East Grinstead v Chichester on Saturday 26 March 2011 in division one of the Sussex County League. The programme has a rather unusual front cover with no players in sight.

Richard Tramontin's notes get things under way reminding us that we had already played Chichester three times. A 1-1 draw on a bitterly cold December evening in Chichester in the Sussex Senior Cup – Liam Baitup scoring –with the replay a month later providing a 3-0 win for us with Rikki Cable, Liam Baitup and Danny Beszant scoring. We had then gone back to Chichester at the start of March for the away league match and had come home with the points with a couple of goals from Rikki Cable and, inevitably, a goal from Liam Baitup giving us a 3-1 win.

Manager Tony Beckingham looks back to “our worst 45 minutes” from our last home match against Eastbourne United though an improved second 45 had brought us a 4-1 win. Looking forward now meant that we “are entering the silly season where all the postponed matches need playing, with two games pretty much every week”. We would be playing another nine matches by the end of April. Programme editor Bruce Talbot tells us that Drew Cooney – in 2011 a player but in 2024 our manager - had made his 200th appearance in that Eastbourne game. The league table shows us in sixth with Chichester 13th. Two goals from Joel Hughes and others from Peter Cooper, Rikki Cable and Mike McKenna gave us a handsome 5-0 win. Moving on we have Dave Gellatly on the front cover for East Grinstead v Newhaven on Tuesday 25 March 2014 in division one, which we won 4-1.

Richard Tramontin's notes remind us that we had played the away game in Newhaven in September where we had lost 3-1 despite Matt Geard putting us ahead in the first half. We would of course now like to reverse that result with Newhaven having lost their last six

games.

But more significantly he told us that Rye United had withdrawn their team from the County League as their ground was no longer considered to be of the required standard. They had for many years been one of the strongest teams in the County League though the league table shows that they were four places off the bottom in the 2013/14 season. We had played them down in Rye earlier in the season with a Sam Schaaf hat-trick giving us a 3-1 win. We still had to play them at home and it was likely that we would be awarded three points.

The notes also talk about some of the other work being done to improve our facilities – for example outside toilets, new changing rooms and resurfaced car park.

Team manager Simon Funnell was disappointed at the most recent match away to Arundel – though played on Wick's groundwhere neither side managed a goal.

The table shows us in fourth with Newhaven 15th. The eight games to be played in April had its usual uneven pattern – five at home followed by three away! LESTER

CLUB NOTICE

Supporter Behaviour

In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match.

Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the fixture against Three Bridges earlier this season foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.

Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.

Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA.

We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead.

As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour.

Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.

RAMSGATE

A POTTED HISTORY OF THE RAMS

Ramsgate is one of the largest non-League clubs in Kent, and for the 2022/23 season are fielding 78 senior and youth teams, which includes three for women and ten for girls. The club continues to grow and, following the installation of the first fixed Panna Cages at an English football stadium in 2020, they replaced the pitch at Southwood with a new all-weather surface that was opened with a visit from Spurs’ Under-23s in July 2021.

The current club restarted in 1945, after the ban on football in east Kent during World War Two was lifted, and the club was originally called Ramsgate Athletic. We have played at the Southwood Stadium ever since.

Ramsgate has had senior football teams within the town since the late 1800s, and despite the paucity of newspaper coverage of in the late 19th century there are reports of Ramsgate Athletic playing at Southwood along with the principal side, Ramsgate Town, who started in about 1886 (team photos exist from 1898).

In 1919 Southwood was provided for Ramsgate Town, by then known as Ramsgate, by Henry Weigall JP and Lady Rose Weigall. In their first season they finished third in the Kent FA League and reached the Kent Senior Cup final but lost to Northfleet at Maidstone 1-0 before a crowd of 10,000.

In 1924 Ramsgate folded and Ramsgate Grenville moved to Southwood and, apart from the rise and fall of the more successful Dumpton-based Ramsgate Press Wanderers in the 1930s, Grenville became the senior Ramsgate side until another World War cancelled football.

Post-World War Two honours have been many especially in the late 1940s and through the 1950s, and again in the late 1960s and 1980s (and not forgetting the mid-2000s). Some say the ‘golden period’ was from 1954-57 when former Scottish international Jimmy Blair was player-manager, and the Rams were back-toback Kent League champions.

Club history was made when they reached the first round of the FA Cup for the first time in 1955, narrowly losing 5-3 at Watford (a record

that stood for 50 years before they reached that stage again). With the demise of the Kent FA League in 1959, the Rams joined the Southern League. The club have had spells in the Southern, Kent and Isthmian Leagues since then.

Bringing their story up to date, former Wasps’ Matt Longhurst was appointed manager in January 2020. After two years in charge, four losses in a row saw Longhurst replaced by former Gillingham coach Steve Lovell in April 2022.

In May 2023 Ramsgate showed their intentions by appointing former Herne Bay boss Ben Smith as their first full-time manager on a twoyear contract.
