Good afternoon and a warm Boxing Day welcome to all our supporters and those who have made the short journey over from Sevenoaks. I wasn't at Three Bridges last Saturday but speaking to Drew last Monday it appeared an injury-hit squad acquited themselves pretty well against free-scoring opposition. We could certainly do with some better luck on the injury front at the moment but this is the first of two home games before 2023 is ushered out and it's important we take advantage. As Richard outlines in his column, we have added to the squad in the last few days with no fewer than five new signings. With Connor Tighe back from suspension and hopefully one or two others fit again we're going to be back to something close to full strength. We look forward to seeing you all again on Saturday for the final game of 2023 against mid-table Hythe. FRONT COVER: Jerson Dos Santos in action during the recent win over Merstham. MANAGER’S NOTES We welcome everyone back for our Boxing Day home game against Sevenoaks. They have had a really good start to the season and we could have no complaints about the result when we went there back in August. They have been in the play-off picture since the start of the season and will be looking to kick on in 2024. We go into today's match with quite a few injury concerns. Our captain Glenn Wilson is still out after suffering a concussion at Shepped United a couple of weeks ago. We lost Omar Folkes when he rolled his ankle in the warm-up in the same game and we would have been without Michael Wilson and Max Walsh had we played last Tuesday against Lancing. That's a lot of experience that we could do with but as always we will not use it as an excuse.

3, which would have made the closing stages interesting, and they potentially could have been down to ten men at the same time. Anyway, it's done and we must focus on today, the first of three games in a week. May I finish by making an appeal to anyone who has the necessary training and experience and wants to join the backroom team as physio to get in touch. It's a position in our set-up we're urgently looking to fill. Finally, I'd like to wish everyone associated the club a Happy Christmas and we look forward to your support tonight and on Saturday against Hythe Town. Good luck to us - Drew.
We have been working hard to add to the squad in the last couple of weeks and I'd like to welcome Jhon Murillo-Castillo and Adonai Dacruz, who both made their debut at Three Bridges.

As many of you will have seen, we lost that game 4-2 but I was pretty pleased with the overall performance against a side who have scored a lot of goals this season. That was where the main difference between the teams was; in the rest of the pitch I felt we matched them. But our habit of conceding avoidable goals was evident again, although I didn't agree with the referee's decision to award them a penalty and when Matt Daniel got clean through late on and was brought down we missed the chance to make it 4EastGrinsteadTownFC

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES Good afternoon everyone and welcome to East Court for today’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Sevenoaks Town. I trust you all had a great Christmas Day and thanks for continuing your festivities with us here on Boxing Day. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our Wasps supporters, the Oaks players, management, officials and supporters as well as today’s referee Marcin Indyk and his assistants Paul Ransome and Harry Wood. I trust everyone enjoys their brief stay and our hospitality. So far in December, Andrew Gidley’s Oaks have drawn two, against Three Bridges and Burgess Hill, and lost away at Phoenix Sports. Thay are currently sixth in the table with 25 points from 16 matches. Oaks won the reverse fixture in August 4-1. Injuries and suspensions took their toll on Drew Cooney’s Wasps in the last couple of matches, but Connor Tighe is available after suspension as is Michael Wilson, who missed our last match at Three Bridges. Glenn Wilson will not be available as he continues his recovery from the head injury he sustained at Sheppey which needed hospital treatment. We may see one or more of our recent signings make an appearance today as we welcome Brasley Kauzeni, Camron Lawson, Tristan Noel and Oluremi Onabanjo to the club and Adam Lonsdale making the step up from our Under 18s & 23s. We are currently thirteenth in the table with 16 points from 14 matches. Congratulations to Jamie Brownlie, who has been our physio over the last few
seasons and is now involved full-time with a Premier League club. We wish him all the best, but his progression has of course meant that we will be left without a physio. We thank Matt Wheeler for stepping in but if anyone is interested in taking on the role, please do get in touch. We are here again on 30th December against Hythe Town and start 2024 with an away fixture on New Year’s Day at Erith and Belvedere. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year. Thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to East Court and I wish you all a safe journey home.

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST

on Saturday 26 December 2015, now in the Isthmian League of course. Richard Tramontin’s notes welcome our visitors hoping that they and everybody had enjoyed Christmas Day. Both teams had struggled in the last few weeks. We had lost our last 4 games having won all 4 of the games before that losing run, while Three Bridges had won their most recent match but had lost all of the 6 games before that win. It is inevitable that a number of Three Bridges players would have played for us (and vice versa) and the Three Bridges team for this 2015 match included Matt Daniel, Steve Sargent and our 2023 manager Drew Cooney. And also Allan Tait. The programme’s league table shows us in 20th place (out of the 24 teams) with Three Bridges sitting in the middle of the table. Andres Losada Tobon put us ahead and that’s how it was at half-time. Then with some 20 minutes left Jack Mahoney took full advantage of a free-kick some 20 yards out to score our second goal. Which is how it ended. Lester Medcalf
Cover for our programme against Bridges in 2015
There is no shortage of programmes in my collection for past Boxing Day matches – often of course against teams who are pretty close to us, as was certainly the case for East Grinstead v Crawley Down on Thursday 26 December 2002. However, I’m a little surprised by a comment made by Bruce Talbot in his notes welcoming our visitors where he says that he “can’t remember the last time the two sides met on Boxing Day here at East Court” though he does suggest that the weather – rain, snow or frost - had caused a number of recent Boxing Day postponements. Later in the programme we have some much stronger words following our previous home game - against Rye United - when “there were some ugly scenes at the end which I wouldn’t want repeated”. We were also disappointed with “the reaction to the result on Rye’s official website.” I don’t know if I was at the match as I can’t remember what it was all about. I do know that we had one of our players sent off – I don’t know who – and that we had a penalty awarded in injury time. Phil Thompson took it and scored, and so earned us a 1-1 draw. Back to the Boxing Day game. The programme’s league table shows us in second place with 4 wins and 1 draw in our previous 5 games – but 18 points behind the league leaders Eastbourne Town !! – with Crawley Down 11th after just 1 defeat in their last 5 games. Before I tell you a bit more about the game, I need to tell you that we had another home game just 2 days later for which we produced another programme with a full match report of the Crawley Down game as well as a summary of all the Boxing Day games. Nothing much to report for much of the first half until minute 41 when Phil Thompson missed a penalty only for Crawley Down to score twice in minutes 44 and 45. On the hour however Ben Burns put us back in the game and nearly 20 minutes later he scored again. 2-2 was how it ended and we were now 20 points behind Eastbourne! Next a look at East Grinstead v Three Bridges

CLUB NOTICE Supporter Behaviour In the last few years the club’s supporter base has grown and Drew Cooney and the players truly appreciate the vocal backing they get home and away at every match. Unfortunately, we received isolated reports of bad behaviour and foul language at home games last season. Those complaints have grown significantly this season and at the fixture against Three Bridges earlier this season foul and abusive language was directed at match officials and opposition players and objects thrown onto the field of play.
Verbal warnings by committee members are not having any effect and if we allow this anti-social behaviour to continue there is every likelihood of a sanction from the league and or the FA. We appreciate the vocal support for the team, but we also have to protect our reputation as a familyfriendly, community club proud to represent East Grinstead. As a result, any under-16 attending home games will have to be accompanied by an adult, who will be responsible for their behaviour.

Jerson dos Santos scores in the 4-1 win over Merstham,
Not only is this totally unacceptable, it is against the ground and league regulations and is forcing fair-minded supporters to stop coming to matches because their enjoyment is being spoiled by a small number.
Also, abuse of individuals and excessive foul language will not be tolerated. Offenders will be removed from the stadium and will receive a ban and, if applicable, season tickets will be rescinded with no refund offered. The club will not hesitate to call upon assistance from Sussex Police if required.

TODAY’s GUESTS
SEVENOAKS SEVENOAKS – THE ISTHMIAN YEARS Since achieving promotion to the Isthmian League, Town have switched to the FA Trophy. In their first ever match in the competition in 2018 they beat former Conference side Grays Athletic 4-2 before losing 2-1 away to Dorking Wanderers, who went on to win the Isthmian Premier Division, in the first qualifying round. In the FA Cup, Town’s best performance came in 2016-17 when they took Chesham to a replay in the second qualifying round and although they’ve yet to meet Football League opposition, one of their most memorable ties came in 2008-09 when they held Folkestone Invicta to a 4-4 draw at Greatness Park in the preliminary round. After a decade during which their highest league position was sixth in 2009-10, Town appointed the former Dartford and Tonbridge player Micky Collins as manager for the 201415 season. Having previously won the Kent League title with Erith & Belvedere, Collins oversaw four seasons of progress, which saw the club rise from 16th to eighth, fifth and third in 2016-17, a season which also saw then win the Premier Division Cup. In 2017-18, having installed a 3G pitch, Collins led them to win the Southern Counties East League title and promotion to Step 4 football for the first time in the club's history and a tenth-place finish in the South-East division. Two Covid interrupted campaigns followed before a poor run of results ending with the departure of Collins after seven and a half seasons in charge in 2021. Harry Hudson was appointed two weeks later, and the team's fortunes were transformed from relegation candidates to mid-table finishers, completed with a 2-1 final day win at champions Hastings United. A seventh successive victory clinched 13th place, winning 26 points out of a possible 30, putting them top of the form table, with Hudson named Manager of the Month for April. The 2022/23 season saw the club record their best ever runs in the Emirates FA Cup and Isuzu FA Trophy. The FA Cup highlight was the 1-0 win in the

third qualifying round at National League South Bath City, before going out to eventual champions Ebbsfleet United - pushing them all the way, before losing 2-0. The Trophy exit a week earlier followed a 1-0 defeat at Lewes. Eighth place was also the best finish as a Step 4 club in the league. The 140th anniversary season also provided some other impressive statistics. A total of 1,288 players represented the club – 1,174 junior players and 114 seniors supported by more than 200 volunteers.
