Good afternoon and a warm welcome to our league game against Sheppey United, for what I believe is the first meeting between the clubs. Since our last home match we've been knocked out of both national competitions. I thought we could have beaten Beckenham here a fortnight ago, and those two great chances we missed late in the second half at 2-2 proved costly in the replay.

Then on Tuesday we had to go to Norfolk to face Wroxham with a few key players missing. Quite how we ended up making that long trek in what is supposed to be a regionalised stage of the Trophy is a question only the FA can answer. By all accounts we played better than the score suggested.

then due to play Wroxham last Saturday but due to the death of her Majesty the Queen the game was rightly postponed. Unfortunately for us, and very harshly in my opinion, we were forced to play the FA Trophy game away on Tuesday

The Beckenham home fixture was really frustrating for myself and the lads because we didn’t get the job done. The midweek replay came round quick, and we had several injuries to players for the return fixture and we had to be mindful of the scheduled Saturday fixture away to IWroxham.gotafairbit

The eight-hour round trip didn’t start well with us giving away a penalty after only five minutes. It was an “off” night all round for the lads but I can only thank them for their efforts in actually getting to the game and missing the best part of two days off work!

I have 100% faith in all of them and trust them all wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, on the night we just did not turn up as we did in the first game. Fair play to Beckenham, they have had the perfect start to their campaign and with Louie up top they have without doubt the best striker in the Isthmian

The lads and myself are really looking forward to being back in league action today and playing in front of our fantastic fans before the short trip away to Three Bridges on Tuesday. We look forward to getting some more points on the board and continuing what’s been a fantastic start to the Thanksseason.again

We welcome everyone back to the OHOB Community Stadium for today’s league game against SheppeyUnited.

Its nice to be back in league action today. We have had a tough couple of weeks in the FA competitions against both Beckenham (FA Cup) and Wroxham (FA Trophy).

of criticism for the line-up in the replay with Beckenham which I think was fairly short-sighted and slightly disrespectful to the lads that started that game. I have been very clear to the 20 lads we have in this squad that we are a squad and everyone in this squad will get an opportunity to play whether its league or cup ties.

That cup exit followed a previous Tuesday night defeat in an FA Cup replay against Beckenham Town when we did enough to deserve a win in the initial First Round Qualifying tie on the TodaySaturday.it’s back to league action against newly promoted Sheppey United who will probably have ex Wasp, Danny Leonard, in their side. Wasps are currently sixth in the table after four matches with seven points following wins over Chatham Town and Haywards Heath, a draw against Ashford Utd and a defeat away to Cray Valley PM.

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The OHOB Community Stadium for today’s Isthmian League South East Division match against Sheppey United.

We had a depleted squad because obviously a number of players were unable to get time off work, and manager, Drew Cooney, played 90 minutes, his first full match for nearly a year. It didn’t start well after conceding a penalty after just six minutes and we ended on the wrong end of a 4-1 scoreline.

Jack Midson’s Sheppey have only played three league matches so far – they drew their opener at home with Chichester, then lost away to Beckenham Town and lost 1-0 at home to Sittingbourne on August Bank Holiday in front of a crowd of 1,004. They too have had three cup ties since their last league match – they lost away to Lewes 8-0 in an FA Cup First Qualifying Round replay after the initial match finished 2-2, and on Tuesday evening lost in a penalty shootout against Herford Town in the FA Trophy after player / manager Jack Midson had scored in the 80th minute to level the score at 3-3 at full time. Wasps make a short trip on Tuesday night to Three Bridges (ko 7.45pm) and the subsequent scheduled match is on Saturday 1st October, away to Burgess Hill.

I would like to thank you all for coming along this afternoon and whatever the outcome of the match, I trust everyone enjoys their visit to The OHOB Community Stadium and I wish you all a safe journey home.

All at East Grinstead Town Football Club are deeply saddened by the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Royal Family will be in the thoughts and prayers of our supporters, volunteers, players, coaches and staff at this sad time. Our squad will be wearing black armbands today as a sign of respect and there will be a minute’s silence before the Asmatch.our FA Trophy match last Saturday was postponed as a mark of respect along with all other football, we had to endure a 400 mile round trip to Wroxham on Tuesday evening in the First Qualifying Round of the Isuzu FA Trophy. The coach left the club at 1pm and we returned at 1.35am.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to the travelling players, management, officials and supporters from Sheppey on what for most will be their first ever visit to East Court. I trust you enjoy your brief stay and our hospitality. A special welcome as well to today’s referee Fabio Roque and his assistants Daniel Head and Gary Baker.

Those first couple of pages include a list of Selsey’s results to date (though no info as to who played and who scored for them) and then a detailed match report of their game on the previous Saturday when they had a two-hour trip to play Westfield (the other side of AndHastings).thatlong journey perhaps contributed to a number of late cry-offs leading to a few late promotions from their reserve team. However a Selsey goal after 20 minutes proved to be the only goal in the match and so meant a better two-hour trip home. However just before half-time one of the Selsey players had been tripped and in his fall had broken a shoulder – which required a hospital trip.

CONTINUED ON PAGE 11

I assume I went to the match – I certainly remember going to Selsey two or three times –though I couldn’t remember much about the match. Our next programme tells me that “Wasps plumbed the depth with this dismal performance” and that “apart from the first seven minutes we were comfortably second best”. We lost 2-0.

A bright front cover shows the stand at Selsey’s ground but, after the first couple of pages, there’s not a great deal to read with 12 of the 20 pages taken up with adverts.

A couple of programmes for games played in the past on 17 September. First up is an away match for one of our County League longest trips – Selsey v East Grinstead on 17 September 2005 in division two.

There’s no league table – which ought to be an important part of any programme - but we do have the teams for the match. Ben Burns appeared to be in goal for us – until I realised that the teams were, rather strangely, listed in alphabetical order.

EastGrinsteadTownFC @egtfcwaspswww.egtfc.co.uk10

FROMPROGRAMMESTHEPAST

I can’t remember too much about the match but goals from Tom Lyons, Marcus Perona and Ben Chick together with a rare Drew Cooney goal gave us a 4-1 win.

But there was more to happen after the match as Tony Beckingham resigned as manager. Fortunately a good night’s sleep and conversations with a few people lead to a change of mind and Tony was back in charge again. (Incidentally it had been 19 years since we had beaten Three Bridges at home. Coming up to date we have yet to lose to Three Bridges in any game – home or away – in the Isthmian League.)

If you have had your memories jogged by this piece then I’d be happy to hear from you at lestermedcalf@btinternet.com.

Back to the visitors from Chichester. The league table for this early stage of the season shows us with three wins and four defeats in eighth place with Chichester just three places off the bottom with one win and three defeats. Not quite sure why they had played three games fewer than us. Indeed, all the clubs below Chichester had played just three league matches, while Rye at the top had played nine league matches. Very odd.

Next up we have a photo of Marc Pelling on the front cover of the programme for East Grinstead v Chichester on 17 September 2011. We were back in the top division of the County ChairmanLeague.Richard

Tony Beckingham both have lots to say about a midweek home defeat by Three Bridges –and we have a full report of the match as well. We had dominated the first half, should have scored a few but only managed one. The second half, on the other hand, was dominated by Three Bridges. They equalised, we somehow stopped them scoring again .... well we did until the 95th minute when they scored the winning goal.

2016 – Present: The Return of Kent League AFootballsixth-place finish in the SCEFL Premier Division was a great achievement in the clubs return to Step 5 of the Non-League pyramid.

2016One. was a remarkable season for the club winning the Kent Senior Trophy, beating Ashford United on penalties at Maidstone United’s Gallagher Stadium in front of a crowd of 870, whilst Holm Park’s ground regeneration saw 715 fans flock to the stadium for a home match against Glebe.

In June 2013 the club merged with Sheerness East FC to become Sheppey & Sheerness United FC competing in the Kent County League Premier Division with the club playing their home games a Holm Park formerly Canning Town Gasworks and then Sheerness Steel Sports Ground. The season saw the club win the Kent FA Intermediate Challenge Shield and finish runners up in the league and were promoted to the Kent Invicta League.

SHEPPEY UNITED

Initially this did not appear to present too many problems as Sheppey romped away with the Kent League title, whilst ground-sharing with Faversham Town, losing only two out of 40 games. Ultimately, however, as the club spent most of the 1990s trying in vain to find a new home on the island, years of playing away from Sheppey began to take its toll, as the club moved from Faversham to Canterbury and then to Sittingbourne. Attendances fell sharply as supporters increasingly became disenchanted with traveling off the island for ‘home’ games, and the club could no longer afford the rents involved.

In March 2001 the club resigned from the Kent League and their record was expunged. The senior team was disbanded until being reformed in 2003, when they joined Division Two East of the Kent County League. They finished second in their first season and were promoted to Division One East. The club was renamed AFC Sheppey in 2007 but was disbanded and reformed under their original name prior to the 2010–11 season.
